I've always had great macarons from here, but for the first time I decided to get a custom cake made here. Liz was wonderful in helping us pick the cake, and really knew a lot about the flavors when we went in to do the cake testing. I decided on getting the mango buttercream, & I really loved it! It didn't taste dry or old like custom cakes usually do, & it looked beautiful. It was a little pricey but honestly I didn't mind because it was done so well. The macarons are soft and not too sweet. The filling used in the macarons also does not overwhelm you. I have to admire how much puffiness the bakers are able to achieve in their cookie. For anyone who has tried to make these, getting your macarons to puff this big without cracking is incredibly difficult. We have ordered from Layer Cake many times, and the results are often hit-and-miss. When you come in and get a fresh croissant or scone, the pastries are fantastic. When you order ahead, sometimes you get something that tastes like it has been in the fridge for weeks. Recently, I ordered a cake for a certain date about a week ahead, and when I called three or four days before I was supposed to pick it up to make a small change, they told me it was already made (and even said I could come pick it up!) Not surprisingly, the cake ended up being dry and hard. Then, this past weekend I ordered cupcakes and I wanted one set for our small family party on Saturday, and a larger set for a bigger party on Sunday, so I made two separate orders, hoping that Sunday's would be fresh from Sunday (not leftover from Saturday or whenever). When I came on Saturday to pick up the cupcakes for Saturday, they handed me both orders! Of course the cupcakes for Sunday were rather dry, and definitely not worth the price I paid. For the prices they charge, they really need to put an emphasis on freshness. In the future, I would only come here for the daily made stuff and skip anything pre-ordered. The good: coffee is good, baked goods are great! My daughter loves the strawberry macarons. The bad: The service has gone downhill. Today, I ordered an espresso ($2 on the menu). The clerk charged me $2.95. When I asked about the high rate of tax, she responded that there was no tax, but that the espresso costs $2.95. When I pointed out to her that the menu said $2 and suggested that someone needed to fix the menu, she looked at me, shrugged, said 'yeah, I guess so,' and then turned around to do something else. This isn't the first time they've up-charged me (I ordered an iced coffee and got upcharged to an iced cold-brew), and when I've pointed out their mistake, they always blow me off. I like this place. I come here every now and then to get a hit of macaroons. They are pretty good, but also a little pricey. Some of the flavors are a little funky... for example the Green Tea doesn't really taste anything like tea, but for the most part the texture is pretty good. We've also picked up a Red Velvet birthday cake from Layers before, and while a little heavy, it was really enjoyable and a good change from the Asian bakeries we usually frequent. One thing I really love are the chocolate dipped coconut macaroons. They're shaped like little pyramids and again the texture was great and I loved the flavor. The staff has also been very friendly to me, so no complaints there. The only downsides is that they close a little early on Sundays and it is a tad pricey, but since I live down the street, I would still consider this my favorite local bakery. read more

I have eaten here now for the 3rd time and each time has been different. I had a croissant egg sandwich and my friend had the banana French toast. The croissant was so flaky and fresh and the omelette was ok. Nothing super special. My friends French toast was overall good. It was priced ok, could have been a bit cheaper. At least his food came with fruit, which I feel like mine should have as well. If I'm looking for a breakfast place I consider the layer cake, but it's not my go-to, and I think there is potential here it's just not the perfect place get but it works for now if I don't want to go to a chain restaurant and want something more intimate. read more

Service: We stopped inside and there were two people behind the counter and a handful making macarons in the back. No one greeted us and it took about 3-5 minutes for anyone acknowledge us. Dessert: We only ordered two since we recently ate. We ordered the Green Tea and Coffee. Both were good but I liked the coffee much more. It actually tasted like coffee and was more flavorful. This is one of my favorite cafes, and my mom's also! I love their cakes because they're not too dry and not too sweet and you can tell they bake them fresh. They were more than cute, they were beautiful!!! The designs were simple but at the same time not too simple! The cookies and other treats were all in little jars and everything was very well organized and presented. We got the green tea cake since her sister has an obsession with green tea and I got the small red velvet muffin and aileen v. got the macaroon. We had them write Happy Birthday Banannie on it and the lady who seems to be the owner had gorgeous had writing for the cake! The cake was only $25 which we thought was a good deal too!! The cake was alright, but I can't help but notice how pretty the cake was. It wasn't as moist as I would have liked it to be. But the red velvet was really moist and really delicious and the macaroon was one of the most delicious macaroon's I've had in a loong time!! Yes! I am definitely a fan! First of all, they totally saved me, when I needed to get a Birthday Cake for my friend. The cake tasted great, they did a really good job decorating it too :) That cake was just SO good! Their macaroons are ok, a little too sweet and not light enough, and the cupcake frosting is too buttery, but some people like that. If I had to come back for only one thing though, that would be their White Orchard Tea. Probably one of the best teas that I've had. Who would want to go buy a cupcake with smushed icing? It was perfectly fine until she put it in a box that wasn't appropriately fit for a cupcake. I asked her for a box that would fit better, so she gave me the same one but a little bigger which still smeared the icing. For a bakery, you should have the appropriate box for a cupcake whether I buy 1 or a dozen. A front desk person with smile or better attitude would really help you out as well. read more

I had a serious craving for coffee and I didn't want to go to starbucks or coffee bean since I drove all the way out to Irvine... so we ended up here. I was only expecting to get a good cup of organic coffee [which I must say is quite tasty & I'm a coffee fanatic!] but I ended up dishing out $30! Their hazelnut macaron is AMAZING! I ended up purchasing every flavor for my bestfriend but only tried out the green tea & hazelnut. It was a little hard to detect the green tea flavor so I didn't enjoy it as much as the hazelnut. I also got the... almond mocha ... pecan?! I really don't remember but it was the nuttiest cake on display because I have a thing for texture. I completely ignored the fact that the lady said the cake is best at room temperature so the icing was still hard and I wasn't digging it too much. I brought it home and my mom said it was one of the best slices of cake she has ever had? Weird... whatever. I'm a fan because... a good portion of their pastries are gluten free! This is one of my favorite bakeries in Irvine and there aren't many in the area. I love their French Macaroons - they are simply heavenly! My favorite flavors are pistachio and rose. :) My sister bought me a box of these amazing cookies for my birthday and I had to resist from eating them all up at once. The first time I came here, i thought their macarons were AMAZING. They "were". the problem is the quality is inconsistent. i've been back several times now and sometimes its 5 star worthy and others its 1 star. LCB is one of my favorite places. I have been here on multiple occasions. I've always had amazing cookies, cakes from here. Especially their french toasts and cookies are to die for and all of the options are delicious. Last time I came for brunch and I really enjoyed Berry French Toast. Berries were so fresh and french toast was a perfect portion of deliciousness and so soft, baked well. I had toast with latte. Latte was also amazing.
