I came in last week after watching Dave Portnoy's review and had a unfortunate experience which I won't discuss but will review everything else. First, the pizza is very thin and crispy.. think like a cracker... it is not my preference in a pizza, but that didn't stop me from enjoying it. Good flavor! Also the pizza is small, a whole pie can feed maybe two ppl or one really hungry person. They also have a house made root beer and cream soda which are really good. The service? Very fast, servers greeted us immediately after 5pm on a Friday and we were seated right away. Food came shortly after. Handling an uncomfortable situation? The owner was a really great guy and handled it like a professional! As a self-proclaimed pizza snob accustomed to New Haven- style pizza I left Lazzara's completely underwhelmed. I appreciated the square shaped serving style but found the crust to be far to thin for my liking with a poor sauce to cheese ratio. My party, also completely dissatisfied, agreed it resembled a thin crust Ellio's pizza (and we would all have preferred a frozen pizza over this). Considering this is one of the most popular pizzerias in the city with rave reviews, Lazzara's further proved how pizza is it's own love language... and it is definitely not my type. That being said, the seating area is cozy. Drink menu is basic, so basic they ran out of Coors light. I haven't been to Lazarra's in quite a while but I was happy to see that they were still serving delicious pizza. It might have been 10 years since I've been. Back in the day, it was packed and it was hard to get in. It's so incredibly sad to see the impact of Covid on this institution. The pizza was as how I remembered...saucey, flavorful and a delicious crust, served in a rectangular tray, which has probably been around since the restaurant opened. I gobbled down my pizza and enjoyed it so thoroughly. It's different from other pizza you'll get in NYC but soooo good. You could say it's a foodie's pizza. The Penn Station area used to be a bit of a food desert but there was always Lazarra's. We also had a salad which was very tasty but the star was the pizza. Lazarra's is a gem and an original. I typically don't write reviews unless there is something significant to mention, but our experience at Lazzara's tonight was the worst food experience, or rather the worst experience in general, that we've had in our entire trip to New York. We came here tonight based on barstools rating and we were highly disappointed overall. We arrived 30 minutes prior to closing (which we hate doing and rarely do) and another family was also waiting to be seated. We were seated at the same time as them, but waiter was clearly upset about seating us so we advised him we will be quick (we already knew what we wanted). He was quick to get our order and my fiancé asked how large half a pizza was. He said it was only 3 small slices and wouldn't be enough for 2 people, and we could only dine in if we ordered a whole pizza. Our waiter was in such a rush that I didn't dare ask for the wine list and just asked for water to avoid making him more upset. Our pizza arrived quickly but I found the sauce to be too sweet and not consistent with the barstool rating. However, my fiancé enjoyed it. We saw the staff cleaning up and preparing to shut down the restaurant so we hurried to finish eating. Our waiter never came back to our table until my fiancé waved and asked for the check, which he dropped off at our table with an attitude. We both said thank you anyways with no response. The name on the receipt says Marco but I'm not sure if this was our server or not. As we got up to leave, the other waiter on the floor acknowledged us and said thank you, which we honestly appreciated so much. It was the first time we didn't feel ignored or unwelcomed since the moment we walked in. Overall, the pizza was okay but the customer service was an F (except for the last moment with the other server), and I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

First got a half Hawaiian which was basically perfect - not burned, good char, not too floppy, great taste. The pineapple could have been fresh and bigger but other than that great. Then I got a Lazzara Salad and that was also amazing - everything fresh, loved the sundried tomatoes, great dressing. Then I got a half margarita and flavor great but this time it was a bit floppy not sure why so not as good as the Hawaiian but the flavor was still great. Would give 5 stars but two annoying things - asked for water and they handed me a bottle they wanted me to buy without asking and they charge a fee if paying by card so take cash. read more

I guess I expected more but then again, Dave Portnoy really has no clue and leans to Bar Pies as being favorite. The staff here seems numb and can't even speak to the Portnoy visit. The pizza (Margarita) arrived and was good but got a bit pasty as cooled. Also had a half of the Lazzara's Special and we could barely find sundried tomatoes. We watched the video of Portnoy at our seats and 9.3? Hmmmm. Maybe 7 and eat up. quick. I also watch pies being pulled from a cabinet and being went to kitchen which confused me a bit. One of the most unique and delicious pizzas I've ever had. We got the classic cheese, the pizza sauce was unbelievable. The sweetness played very nicely with the cheese (and red pepper flakes if you know what's good for you) and a perfectly crispy crust. So good. Lazzara's is by far the best pizza in NYC. My wife and I visiting NYC for a show and had dinner at Lazzara's last night. The pizza is amazing and the best we ever had. We had the primavera pizza, tossed salad, roasted peppers with mozzarella and tomato, tiramisu and espresso. Wow everything was great including the wait staff. Big shout out to Toko for all the great recommendations and service. They also have some great drinks and you should try the vodka and lemonade it was my wife's favorite. Can't find anything good to say about this place... we wanted good pizza and my son uses barstool for pizza reviews, and they rated over 9, which is crazy good. Well, this place was a let down on all levels. For starters, there were 3 of us and ordering 1 pie was "not allowed". We had to order 1.5 pizzas, which was way too much. On to the pizza itself. It's a square pie and extremely thin. None of that is bad, but the lack of cheese to sauce (ratio) was not good. Then the sauce is far too sweet, and the salt and grease levels took the pizza to an unacceptable level. We each ate one piece and gave the remaining to the homeless folks outside. Avoid this place and don't buy into any of the hype. There are far too many great pizza places in NY to settle for substandard. read more

We came here solely because of the Barstool 9.3 pizza review, and we were very excited to try it out to see what all the hype was about. We were seated promptly, and my only complaint was that the waitresses seemed like they were in a rush. We had barely sat down to look at the menu and they were already asking if we were ready. I ordered a plate of penne alla vodka which was absolutely amazing. We also got 1 and a half regular pizza pies and I've never tasted anything like it. I was trying to find one redeeming quality of this place to prevent a one star but despite trying hard I could not. This place was hyped up but there is no reason. The place is small and tucked away up some stairs so you might miss it. The service was not good at all. We ordered a large cheese pizza and the consensus was clear that it tasted almost exactly like a frozen pizza you would buy and heat up for a cheap dinner, yet this place was charging more pizza per slice than so many others in the city. The crust and cheese were eh but the sauce was not it, maybe some people would like it but I guarantee the majority would simply pass on it. The message sent from this place was clear, you might be better off getting a dollar slice. I will never go back to this place and with the extensive amount of good pizza in NYC, I would say skip this place and find something you would enjoy. read more
