The atmosphere at Le Pavillon was good. Generally the staff were friendly, but the hostess and primary server were simply unpleasant and patronizing. The disingenuous sneers were the cherries on top. The cocktails were poorly made. The amuse-bouche was a delightful bite. Some of the bread was fresh, but the rest were stale. The octopus (Poulpe) was bland and tough. The duck (canard) was pungently gamey and dry -- a hard combination to achieve. The lobster (homard) was like sawing through rubber. An unfortunate waste of what could have been a perfectly fine dish. The coffee was impossibly watered down and lacked any resemblance of taste. The dessert, however, was surprisingly good after the preceding dishes. In all, if this were a diner in the middle of nowhere, the experience would have been passable. For a Michelin-starred restaurant, this was abysmal by even the poorest of standards. If you are looking to torture yourself with exceptionally poor service, lackluster dishes, and a terrible evening, Le Pavillon is the place to seek out. Otherwise, please save yourself and palate by avoiding this place. read more

What a treat! The views from the stairway entrance of the Chrysler Building were epic, our server Anthony was a delight and so was their tasting menu. Opted for the three course and added a fourth dish in to share. Got the oysters Vanderbilt which was spectacular, then had the sea scallops, the dover sole which was wonderful and the cheese selection for dessert. Our foursome had a wonderful evening. The decor and ambience are truly impressive - with views of Grand Central and the Chrysler Building really setting a wonderful scene in the large open air dining room. Our foursome enjoyed our waiter Walter's presence and recommendations. We started with a potato inspired amouse bouche which was one of the evening's highlights. Amongst the four of us we tried four first courses: caviar pasta, mussels soup, tuna and the mackerel. All were great with the mussel soup and the pasta perhaps being the best bites of the evening. The pasta was lemony - but was not overpowered - and the caviar added a nice touch. We thought the restaurant shined in the first course. It was a bit odd that our bread - which was delicious - came as the first course was being served. Seemed like a step off. We did enjoy the Parmesan olive bread very much but it was a bit late at that point as we wanted to enjoy our first courses. We also had a couple bottles of wine which the sommelier helped us select due to the 40 ish page wine list! As we dined, owner Daniel Boloud stopped by the table to say hi which was a nice touch. I've eaten at his other restaurants before and enjoyed the chance to greet him. He's certainly a hard working man! For mains we had the halibut, sole and bass. Sole was the highlight - well worth the supplemental charge. It was crunchy and packed with flavor. The halibut had a nice broth and the crunchy barley was a welcomed contrast - overall the flavor was refined and pleasing. The bass was also tasty with the lemon coulis pairing well with the first course pasta. We also enjoyed the truffle potatoes and the broccolini. I would suggest a bit more ricotta relative to broccolini might enhance the pairing. The desserts were a mixed bag. We got the cafe/chocolate, apple, and hazelnut (noissette). The apple dessert was delicious. The hazelnut tasted like a refined ferreting rocher - very delectable. We were not impressed with the cafe/chocolate dessert. There was a coffee infused gelatin that was not tasty at all - overly bitter and not sweet whatsoever that stuck out a bit like a sore thumb. In general would suggest rethinking this dessert which we also found a bit light and airy and not dense or decadent like the others. The ice cream was tasty however. We ended with a few cream puffs courtesy of the restaurant. Overall a very tasty meal. Highlights were our waiter Walter, the caviar pasta, the mussel soup and the Sole. Lowlights we're the cafe/chocolate dessert and not getting bread until the first course had arrived. I work close by and look forward to going back! read more

In all candor this was a real downer of a meal and not what one expects from a Boulad restaurant. The few positives are the space was nice, one can speak as the nice level is manageable and the service was attentive. The genuine failing was the kitchen. Both my guest and I had the halibut dish as our lunch entrees. The seafood in it was so overcooked as to be marginally edible; shrimp had the texture of rubber, the halibut was so over cooked as to be bone dry, etc. It is served in a bowl surrounded by broth which makes cutting things to be bite-sized a real challenge without having it splash on you. Both poor conception and execution. If this wasn't a business meal with an important client I would have sent it back -- I didn't want to embarrass my business associate who was from out of town.. read more

Amazing service and views of Grand Central, very tall ceilings, even for NY standards, with an artistic chandelier over the main bar. Great cocktails and nice selection of reds and whites. Tasting menu consists of 3 or 6 courses / person. For us, 3 was plenty as we brought home a few containers. Buckwheat mafaldine (ribbon pasta) in lemon sauce and caviar is heaven. Foie gras is wonderful accompanied by cornbread and the best glazed orange date of all time. Roasted dover sole encrusted in wheat flour with moscatel (white, vinegar) sauce delightful and a play on a large fish stick. Veal shank decadent. The dessert options include a Fromage plate, winding down the night with what you would normally have as a starter - it worked. The milk chocolate mousse has a layer of praline crust with hazelnut chocolate sculpted over the mousse. High marks for taste and presentation. Chef Boulud graciously stepped out and said hello capping an unforgettable dining experience. read more

before getting right into this review, i would like to mention what a wonderful lunch my wife and i had at your lovely restaurant. i also want to specifically commend our server Harold. he was very friendly, attentive, professional and informative throughout our visit there and he did it so effortlessly. i also want to commend Renata our host and of course commend the bus attendants and chefs/cooks/bartender for all their hard work and attention to detail. finally, a big toast to the designer of your restaurant. it looks so warm and welcoming with all the greenery and beautiful tableware, silverware and glassware. and now for our review of our 3-course lunches: first course SUNCHOKE VELOUTE + FOIE GRAS PARFAIT this dish had a wonderful soft feel to it with a taste and texture of the classic vichysoisse but with a slightly different twist. and the foie gras was magnificent with the prune gelatin texture on top. this combination was perfect and using toasted brioche instead of just bread was even better then i would have thought of myself. [NOTE: for this course my wife ordered a RUM ANANAS cocktail which was so so refreshing and perfectly balanced in sweetness and alcohol strength. kudos to the bartender!] WOOD FIRE OCTOPUS this dish had a bit more oomph to it with an amazing taste especially of the lentils. my only slight disappointment with this dish was how the octopus was presented pre-sliced. from the images i've seen before, the octopus tentacle is usually presented whole which i was expecting but did not get. but of course it did not take anything away from the taste and texture of the octopus. it tasted very fresh to me. [NOTE: prior to this course i ordered the MEPHISTO CLASSIQUE ABSINTHE VERTE which was also perfectly presented by Harold our server with water poured over a sugar cube to balance out the bitterness of the absinthe. my favorite apertif] second course WILD MUSHROOM GIRELLA PASTA this dish definitely put the fungus at the center of the table. the mushroom tastes just exploded in our mouths and the pasta was perfectly cooked for being so wide and presented perfectly to our eyes. and the sauce well... what can you say - divine! [NOTE: unfortunately my wife doesn't drink wine so she stuck with her ANANAS drink] POUCHED HALIBUT for this dish i must say i'm a bit biased because bouillabaisse is one of my favorite classic french dishes so i ordered this with it in mind and it did not disappoint. the dish was also beautifully presented by the server's assistant via a pour-over of the bouillabaisse broth over the seafood on the dish which had just the right balance of fennel and pastis to my palate. i must also note this dish was very filling as Le Pavillon is quite generous with the serving of halibut which my hungry stomach appreciated. [NOTE: i ordered a glass of the Luis Pato 2019 white wine which Harold suggested that went perfectly with this dish - to me at least] third course MELON VACHERIN this desert was lovely and very light and cool with the merengue at the bottom and not overly sweet which my wife appreciated. CHOCOLATE NOISETTE this desert was lovely too and very classic noisette tasting to me. i would have preferred a millefeuille for desert but that was not an option for lunch sadly. but kudos to the pastry chef (ogata-san) for some very creative desert selections. finally, would like to point out one wonderful part of our meal that other patrons should be aware of. during the initial bread service of our meal, i noticed that signature triangular butter peak that i have seen in france before. and without mistake, Harold confirmed to my wife and I what we thought, that it was in fact a Bordier butter which is quite rare to find in the US. so i had to break my low carb diet for this moment of rarity and enjoy as much as possible. for this BIG KUDOS to Monsieur Boulud for some major CIA tactics to access this gem of a butter into his restaurant from abroad. team LP, great job and keep up the great work until we meet again! A bit of a letdown when it comes to top end, splurgy spots. Great ambience. My 2 main issues are, the vegetarian tasting menu is subpar. There were so many servers hovering around, it still took us more than 40 mins after we were seated, to get our drinks and bread basket. Meal didn't start arriving till 1H seated. The Chef doesn't know what to do with veg dishes. Some restos have cauliflower steaks so here is a repeat, although nicely done. Eggplant dish with really hard chewy skin was a disaster lacking taste and texture. Mushroom pasta was better but the polenta and balsamic tomatoes on the side were neither a match nor well done. Canapés - their onion tart isn't even a stitch on the onion torta at Ci Siamo. They should just ditch it instead of being an inferior copy cap of this now iconic dish at Ci Siamo. Drinks took forever to come. Nothing I ate today was memorable. Squash canape and cauliflower steak were the best of the lot, followed by Avocado salad. Disappointed by a spot with this type of credentials, most folks won't visit 2nd time. I predict short lived tenure for this Chef here. Something else in less than 2.5 years. Oh, their signature cocktails are so meh too, we switched to scotch. Sugar and random ingredients in cocktails. And yeah, go to Ci Siamo if you can, it's really epic! read more

Ascended the stairs and was surprised to see the atrium dining space .., very cool bar and saw lone diner eating her lunch there, and 2 celebs having lunch a few seats away. Very welcoming hosts and BOULUD style unpretentious friendly servers. Chose the 2 course but was difficult to resist the beautiful dessert menu just couldn't dedicate the time to 3 courses. Dining partner chose the yellowfin tuna and I chose the grilled avocado with farro and goddess dressing topped with kale chip. Ample portions for both as an app and very delectable avocado but dining partner was underwhelmed with tuna all. It's the main course that was a total disappointment. Girelle pasta with mushrooms was a salty mushy mess that made it inedible and my hazelnut crusted flounder with mushrooms was nicely prepared but the sauce was so oversalted too! Someone in the kitchen needs to lighten their hand! Dining partner and I shared to taste each other's plates, and we both agreed that this salt level of these dishes was overwhelming the beautifully plated food. Loved the ambiance and long pause between courses but hoping they can find the culprit sprinkling that salt! read more

I wanted to check this restaurant out for a while as I had high expectations from Daniel. Overall I was left feeling very meh and have had far more enjoyable experiences for literally half the price. I suppose it was the experience itself that left a lot to be desired. The staff was fantastic and the food was delicious. But the ambiance was really not enjoyable for me. We were seated next to a large column in the center of the "low ceiling" part of the restaurant. The restaurant itself is in a massive 5-ish storey area and when I entered I was very impressed by the high ceilings, trees, and openness of the space. But then we sat in the main area with 8ft high ceiling and overly bright lighting. It felt stuffy and very moderately snooty. I felt a bit like I was in a high class 90s restaurant (thats not a compliment). It's just not an atmosphereI enjoyed. The place would have been much better had they not added this false ceiling ruining the immenseness of the restaurant. Overall I left feeling somewhat disappointed which is more a reflection of the price point for something which did not wow me. I've spent half the money for double the experience at other places. We had to wait for at least 3 minutes until they finished chatting to greet us. The waiter was not attentive. We have to look and wait for him to show up every time. Waiting for at least 15 minutes to take our order. He didn't look that happy when I asked to pack my leftover to go. Be fair, he was not rude. He just doing his job with no passion. Update from my August 2 review I was impressed when the GM responded to my review a day after my post and encouraged me to contact her. I replied on the same day to give my contact info but have not heard back. Since it has been more than a month since I emailed her with nil a response, I now doubt the sincerity of the GM's outreach and wonder if the prompt response to my review was merely window dressing. At any rate, my out of town friends had dinner there 2 weeks ago to celebrate a milestone birthday. I struggled whether to give 3 or 4 stars. The building was beautiful, which followed into the interior. You check in on the first floor and they walk up two flights of stairs (elevator available) and come out into the bar, with the maître d' on your left. I went on Saturday night so the bar area was crowded. After waiting to my reservation time, we were promptly sat. The inside of the dining room was beautiful, with great amounts of greenery. The table was spacious for the amount of guests we had. Once we were sat we were immediately asked about our drink orders...half the table ordered and the other half needed more time. This led to complications down the line. First course: The table's order included the wood-fired octopus, the onion tart, and the MAÏS. The onion tart was very good, and would be enjoyed by those who like a strong cheese. The wood fired octopus was cooked perfectly but suffered from poor pairing. The rest of the plate completely overpowered the octopus, suppressing its flavor. Second course: We ordered crusted sea scallops, the lobster dish, and the grilled strip loin (2 orders of the lobster dish, 2 orders of the grilled strip loin). The sea scallops were cooked perfectly but had a harsh crusting that destroyed the texture (large pieces of crusting interfered with the bite). Additionally they were paired with a pepper sauce that dominated the scallops. The lobster dishes were, well, lobster. The lobster was paired well with sides. For me lobster falls into 2 categories: bad lobster and lobster. This lobster was not bad. The grilled strip loin was cooked perfectly, paired well, and satisfying. Third course: Cheese selection was quite good, a very generous portion. The coupole cheese was just fantastic. There was a issue with the drinks. As the night went on we would order drinks and they wouldn't come. Someone else would come to the table, we would tell them, and then the drinks still didn't come. I want to say it stretched to about 15-20 mins. Then there is the water. This is NYC, which has arguably the best water supply of any major city in the world. We of course went with tap water. The water was served warm. The water was served sparingly. The water cups are too small for the level of attention provided by staff. Additionally I was always taught that you don't ask a dinner "Are you done?", but we must have been asked rhat So why 4 stars and not 3? Well they acknowledged their faults with the drink orders and tried to fix the situation. read more

For a 125 per person prix fixe,one would expect exceptional world-class food. The potato mussel soup was very good. Then the main course, scallops came. Scallops must be cooked delicately because there is a fine line between under and overcooked. These were undercooked, not only dangerous healthwise, but surprising at a place that touts itself as one of the best. To their credit, offered a replacement item, but the thrill was gone and I declined (shouldn't have). The caramel pear desert was a bit sour. Then to top it off, they charged $28 for a bottle of sparkling water. Oh, and $25 for a small glass of something like Prosecco. Finally, excellent service, just to be fair. So, all in all, extremely high prices for a decent but not extremely fantastic meal. read more

Coming out of a pandemic and social aspect, my foodie experience is lazer focused beyond the glitz. Not their first rodeo, you expect something a little more. What I don't expect at this price tag that they would have a side table right next to the staff station. Not a relaxing experience for any diners, and noted they consistently placed asians at that table. And if you know your foodie experience, you should be asked to move to another table. Believe me, there were ample of empty tables. Food were made to order (probably speared by price and supply issues). No issue with that until one key dish you ordered was never placed so do you let your other dishes sit cold or eat without the full experience? Then when it finally arrived, it missed a key ingredient. Service was good, but felt rushed. The dishes were okay, conceot is like tad worn IMHO. Suited the older crowd that have become followers. Do get rid of the net curtains, haven't seen taut seams since the 80s. With so many great restaurants, price tag didn't match experience. read more

Le Pavillon has been on my to-do list for awhile. And it's not often that I walk away from a top rated restaurant and think anything other than, "Well, that was 'nice'. No reason ever to return." But Le Pavillon was memorable and will definitely warrant a return visit, the best fine dining experience I've had in NYC all year. The menu is so beautiful it was extremely hard to choose dishes. Four of us shared each course. Usually I will feel there's one overwhelming winner for each course when I dine out. Not so here. Every single dish had a very distinct flavor profile and was scrumptious. And I'm rarely thrilled by a dessert, but I'm still dreaming of their new apricot dessert. Our waitperson, Anthony, was extremely helpful and personable, without being intrusive, and really contributed to the absolutely delightful experience. The oyster and crudo were delicious. The fish dishes that followed were surprisingly all over cooked to some degree although they still had great flavor. I was excited to try the Dover sole only to find that it was tough and not tender. All in all it was a nice dining experience. Just slightly missed the mark. read more

went here for an anniversary celebration- the interior is just beautiful. absolutely gorgeous and functional structure but so classy. the service was probably the best i have gotten in a very long time- everything was timed to perfection and our servers were amazing. the food was great but their portions were smaller compared to even other high scale places I have been to- but were still filling. we did the three course including the share of the caviar (which was good but not great for the price). also got the prawn with the grilled octopus for the appetizer, lobster for entree, and the chocolate mouse for dessert (although the mango dessert is more unique and id recommend that one more). overall beautiful experience . read more

Had a wonderful dinner at Le Pavillon last night. This was my first time at a restaurant since the start of the pandemic--and I couldn't have asked for a better meal! The space is absolutely stunning. The food is incredible; we had the moules, the oursin, the sole and the halibut and every bite was delicious. Same goes for the desserts (the citron and the noisette). Also, the pommes Pont Neuf are the best potatoes I've eaten in my whole life. The wine list is fantastic and the sommelier Blake was extremely knowledgeable and a pleasure to talk with. This is a terrific addition to the NYC restaurant scene, just as you'd expect from Daniel Boulud (who was in the kitchen himself last night)! read more

Walking up the stairs to enter the dining room, the grand chandelier and Chrysler building view make a great first impression. We had: amuse bouche: - * peach and ? in turnip puree - very good roasted turnip flavor in puree appetizers: - * Onion Tart - delicious caramelized onion with richness from the tart filling and shell. sharp side salad for balance. - Octopus - tender and good octopus but the sauce and puree didn't improve the dish mains: - ** Lobster - lobster in lobster bisque with herb puree and purple potatoes. Spoonfuls of lobster with lobster bisque were wonderful. Herb puree somewhat lightens the bisque. Purple potatoes had a good sweet flavor. - Lamb Chops - Lamb chops with sides of rich polenta and finely chopped chard leaves. Good and well done but not memorable. desserts: - Hazelnut and Chocolate - chocolate cremeux (similar to mousse) over hazelnut praline. Very pretty. Tasted like a better Ferrero Rocher truffle. - * Grapefruit and Fennel - Grapefruit sorbet encased in meringue and cream. Each bite is refreshing and light and vanishes quickly. Great summer dessert. - petit fours - vanilla caramel and pistachio. The vanilla caramel was ok. The pistachio tasted like pistachio flavoring and wasn't good. Most fantastic view na GCT building, which I love and of course Chrysler building as well. terrific experience just to have a cocktail at the bar looking at the street below. Wonderful food, starting from the highest quality breads, which a are baked daily on the premises, through terrific creamy French butter, splendid wine selections and on spot recommendations from the sommelier, to quality of food and new take on French Cousine itself. Super original way of serving foie gras - with corn soup/chowder along with delicious serrano/corn bread. Torchetti pasta with the most fabulous lump crab meat - divine. The flavor of crab was spectacular. To die for halibut with shiitake. Side of Wild mushroom was absolutely stunning! Rotiserrie chicken with fresh runner beans served champagne sauce - heaven. Then dessert! We choose noisette chocolate and citron fraise with verbena. Such a delicate and extremely refreshing taste. To finish we had a French pear cider along with rich and delicious espresso - perfectly prepared. Like everything else. Truly amazing experience we had.
