We got a room at the Hyatt Resort and Spa to see the fireworks on New Year's Eve and took a chance on this place located across the street even though we already had some trepidations about typical bar foods in Waikiki. We should've listened to our inner food voice. Nearly every dish we ordered was overly salty, except for the onion soup which went in the opposite direction and tasted thin and watered down, with very little flavor. The dining area was hot and stuffy, even though we were seated outside on the lanai in late December. The building sits behind another structure that seems to block the trade winds, so there was almost no airflow. Service was friendly but slow. The one real standout of the night was the guitar player/singer, who was great and added a lively atmosphere. We sat right next to him and thought we would get blown out but he was a pro and knew how to keep it lively without drowning out the conversations. Unfortunately good live music can't quite make up for uncomfortable seating and inconsistent food and service.

Omg we came back for the superb service and great cocktails! We again had the Pinacolada with Malibu and Bacardi. So glad we saw our server from last time, Lynn, while Sarah was super friendly! If you want a local dive bar with friendly staff with great cocktails, and live music, this is the place. When visiting Waikiki, I highly recommend!

Food: B ****. My fiancé says it's okay. He had to order two rounds of shrimp because the 3 shrimp that came with his order made him sartorially laugh. My man is a large man and for a man that was starving, that was a small portion. The fries were nicely seasoned and my grilled cheese cane with cheddar and provolone - delicious! Service: B **** Our server had a couple weeks off and she was "getting back in the swing of things." She offered me having the grilled cheese sandwich the normal way or doing it the special way they do it with the cheese on the outside. I ordered it the special way and she brought it out the normal way. She said, "they made it the normal way instead." That was kind of funny because on the menu it just says Grilled Cheese sandwich and she is the one that offered the unique making of the sandwich but just left it in front of me stating it was made not the way we decided on together. Ambiance: C***. It's kind of boring per my boo however I say for people liking that island simple reggae cafe, this fits the bill. It's outdoor dining with very good interesting views. Dietitian Dorothy's tip: order a side salad to complement the heavy food here to make your 5 fruits and veggies per day!

Outdoor patio! The music was BUMPIN as we were walking by... so of course, we stopped by for some drinks and good vibes. I got the Frozen Piña Colada, which they can also make non-alcoholic! It was really sweet, but creamy. & they offer different flavors, like Lava Flow and Mango. Bathroom is a little sketchy, but did the job.

Went for HH on a Weds and got seated right away at 5:30pm. We got: 1) pina colada - 4/5. basic & good 2) margarita - 3/5. also basic 3) calamari - 3/5. didn't care for the breading 4) arancini - 3/5. just ok 5) poke crostini - 3/5. just ok 6) sliders - 3/5. bun was too thick Overall, it was just ok. Nothing exciting. Was close to the Hyatt so decided to try it out. Live music started at 6pm so not a great place to have a conversation.

Everything was fantastic! Live music. No wait as we walked in. Asked the hostess to give us the coolest spot. She let me walk around til I found it. Thank you!!! We ordered our food within 10 min after sitting. Drinks came out quickly too. Ordered the kahuku shrimp plate. 1 scoop of rice, green salad tossed in a light Asian dressing and 11 big, crunchy, garlicky shrimp. There was some kind of butter-garlic suace under the shrimp. Absolutely delicious! Not too salty. Super savory. A little squirt of lemon helped even things out. The bonus to an already fabulous dining experience...our waitress gave us a 15% Kama'aina discount!

The food here is extremely delicious! Tuesday they have a "any taco + smoothie for $16" I got the breakfast tacos. They were amazing. It was savory but still felt healthy. To drink I got the King Cure smoothie. Also amazing! The service is pretty fast and there nice indoor/outdoor seating!

    Loco Moco
    Ashley C.

We were told we HAD to try the loco moco. DID NOT disappoint. The patty was moist, the gravy was rich, rice sticky, egg perfectly cooked. Accompanied by traditional macaroni salad, it was the best of two I've tried so far on my trip. There was also some salad Short walk from the beach with it still in view from 2nd floor. Huge plus, especially since we were still damp from surfing.

    Mai tai!!

We held our class reunion here after the owner reached out and shared that he could do a fabulous menu - and it ended up being the perfect spot! We weren't a super big party, and its intimate setting was just right for our gathering. The staff was super friendly, took our drink orders and let us mingle for awhile. I was told they were known for their mai tais so I tried one.... And then had to have another. So good and unique!! Definitely a must try with their lilikoi foam! And the food was so good. Even tho it was prepared and sat in warmers for awhile (cause most people were late and were just so friendly catching up lol) it was all still so yummy!! My favorite was the crispy and tasty garlic shrimp, and I can't wait to order it again and eat it fresh. The fried noodles had lots of local favorite toppings of fish cake and spam, the lomi salmon had the most unexpected but made me think, why doesn't everyone do this addition of slightly salty limu, the slider was flavorful with mustard and pickle to spice up the burger, the kalua pig was slightly more exciting and delicious than normal too, possibly a slightly more BBQ flavor? I loved the warm ginger chicken over rice - the owner is part Chinese and I appreciated how it kept the essence of the local favorite with the ginger sauce, but was warm and over white rice. Finally we got cute mini lau lau, and the pork was super meat and well seasoned. Everything was so good that I ate waaay more than I intended to in the reunion outfit lol. It's a lil harder to get to than most places and ended up parking at the zoo... But it is also more fun!! There was live music, super chill vibe - it's definitely worth figuring out parking to get to pretend we're tourists and enjoy this local spot that's snuck away in Waikiki. Can't wait to return!!

Happy Hour 3-6. Patio with an ocean view. This place is a vibe.

This place is great! Great music! Great Service! Great Food! We stumbled upon this place as we were looking for another restaurant altogether, but got hot and wanted to chill. Saw it down the street and decided what the heck, let's go there. So happy we did! Sitting one story above street level with a fabulous cool breeze flowing through the place we sipped on some great Pina Coladas. Friendly wait staff asking about our stay, where we've been and really engaging with us. Every one was so kind and made sure we had what we needed. The sliders were really good and had a nice pineapple bacon jam to complement the patty. The crispy Korean Fried Chicken was so light, airy and yummy. My wife had the poke crustini and raved about fresh and tasty they were. Great spot and so happy we chose to stop by. Highly recommend!!

Had a late dinner here. The ambiance is very nice. Had the poke and the kailua pork sandwich. All very good.

We were attracted by the live music. The place was half empty but it still took ages for us to be seated. We ordered two drinks and an appetizer. We drank our drinks and waited for our appetizer for so long that the singer stopped playing. We asked the waiter for an update on our appetizer and he said "Sorry, I didn't order it." We went somewhere else instead. Also, my fresh squeezed juice was itty bitty and tasted like water.

Pulled pork sandwich and fresh Marlin
    Scott J.

I had the fresh Marlin. It was cooked excellent loved the macadamia nut pesto. My wife had the pulled pork sandwich which was tasty but the bun was just a bit dry. The ambiance was great reminded me of the beach cafes we eat in back home in CA. Live music was great and not to loud. Service from Genesis was excellent she was professional and very attentive. This place is a great little hidden nugget! We will be back!

Have you had to wait to get a seat? Any suggestions if I want to walk-in or should I make a table reservation? Thanks!

We do not take reservations, so it's easy to find a table quickly. We have 15 tables and 10 seats at the bar, so it should never take too long to find an open seat.

The restaurant is quite busy during weekday lunch, but the tables cleared pretty quickly. And we just can't go here anymore unless changes are made! We used to prefer them over Zippy's, but now they are less than 7-Eleven quality, while charging higher-end prices for the neighborhood. We have given them many chances, hoping it was just a fluke, but we have repeatedly been disappointed. Their chicken has become chewy and fatty, their rice is mediocre, and condiments such as mayonnaise are stripped down to the bare minimum quantity. Chile is poured so lightly that it is practically a minuscule amount. And their prices have continued to rise. I don't know if greedy people took over the restaurant who just don't care anymore, or what is going on. I remember when I used to take people here, and they would be impressed with the quality and quantity--plates just heaping with good cuts of meat, noodles, and rice. Those days are no more. As they say in Japan, the price performance is poor. Furthermore, their staff is rude. I can only imagine it was an owner working this day because it was a face I haven't seen that often. An older gentleman who appeared to be of Okinawan descent, working the cashier register, accosted us because I was privately discussing with my family about splitting different items with them. We were all ordering something, so he wasn't losing any money, but he told us about how prices are double in Waikīkī. First of all, it is rude to interrupt your customers that way. Secondly, we don't go to Waikīkī or care about Waikīkī. What happened to serving the locals? Third, Waikīkī has an assortment of restaurants, prices, and qualities, and they shouldn't be how you base your services. Lastly, I guarantee I could find a better deal in Waikīkī if I wanted to. Next time you're in the area, just go get a $6 bento or a $5 burrito from 7-Eleven next door. I assure you, the price performance and experience will be better. If Rainbow Drive-In is in the business of comparing themselves to other things, let's compare them to 7-Eleven and at least try to be better than them, right? I can get mochiko chicken from 7-Eleven for $6.99 that is similar in portion size and better quality. Meanwhile, they are serving their fatty, dry chicken for $16.75. Highway robbery! And they are not fancy, with their dirty picnic tables and plastic cutlery. They are just a step above a food truck, if that. Save yourself from the hype. They have gone downhill like a landslide. Go elsewhere.

The staff was super nice about it and was able to accommodate us, with only a small request that we be out by 8pm since there was another big party with a reservation coming in. Absolutely reasonable. They sat us right away at three large tables, which gave us plenty of space for food and didn't force us to sit super close together. Menus, waters, plates, napkins, and forks were all brought out immediately, and our waiter was quick to take our order. We started with the prix fixe menu for 8-10 guests and were going to add other items à la carte, but a handful of our group accidentally went to the other Side Street location (make sure your group is all on the same page), so what we ordered ended up being more than enough. We left stuffed and with 5 boxes of food still. Edamame was nice and steamy, and large enough to easily pop the beans out with your mouth. Wish there was a bit more salt though. The farmer's salad had everything going on from citrusy to salty to crispy. Avocado had a little bit of oxidation but the capers, dressing and potato curls provided plenty of reasons to overlook it. The fried rice came in a hefty portion, with sizable pieces of bacon and sausage. The chicken I didn't realize was boneless based on the shape of the deep fry, but it was nice to freely bite into it without worrying about hitting anything with my teeth. Probably a bit too much on fried bits but still good. Pork chops had a better meat to crisp ratio in my opinion, as well as juiciness. They even came with ketchup on the side, which I love as a pairing but don't see much of at restaurants. My favorite meat item was definitely the sizzling boneless kalbi. The presentation on the sizzling plate with a side of kimchi was spectacular, and the meat was full of flavor. We also ordered yakisoba, which wasn't part of the prix fixe. Tasted good but nothing past standard expectations. We let the waiter know we had a 30th birthday at the table, and they brought a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream with a candle, and did a decent job getting the whole room to participate in the singing. It could also be the type of crowd this place attracts, since it seemed that everyone was so friendly and approachable. Thanks to the quick and consistent service, we were out in a little over an hour with no complaints.

Signs clearly direct you to which window you can order food from and another for food pickup/dessert only ordering. We opted for combo plate (kalua pork and chicken long rice) w/ a side of poi. Both the kalua pork and chicken long rice were tasty but wished we had ordered rice instead so that i could mop up the delicious fat from the kalua pork! Loved the haupia pudding but wished they would give you a bit more. For dessert we ordered the tahitian sweet lady which was delicious! Wasn't a fan of the salmon lomi as it was pretty fishy for me. As we waited for our food, we noticed a dessert chilling on the ledge and joked with my wife that it was likely ours. Sure enough after 10 mins, the ice cream guy asked the cashier whose it was and at that time was our number called. Sadly, the ice cream had already started to melt. Wished they wouldn't have prepared the dessert until after our food was ready. Would definitely head back for their plate lunches and to try the sweet lady of waiahole dessert.

Amazing food. Ho'io salad is a must. Fresh poi is tops. You can't go wrong at Waiahole Poi Factory.

The owner was very friendly and took the time to recommend dishes for us, including the laulau and lechon kawali. We also ordered the BBQ short ribs. Overall, it was a good experience trying Hawaiian food, but it's just not really our type of cuisine. The laulau was quite dry, and the preparation felt more like meat that had been boiled or cooked in liquid, which isn't something I usually enjoy. The lechon kawali had a crispy pork belly texture, topped with something similar to a salsa, but it didn't suit our taste either. Unfortunately, the cabbage served with it also had some black spots, which was off-putting. The BBQ short ribs were the highlight of the meal and the dish we enjoyed the most. We appreciate the experience and the hospitality, but the flavors just didn't quite match our personal preferences.

Either the owner or the manager seemed like a one man show. He was the server, bus boy, and chef. Husband got the pipikalua short ribs/he enjoyed. Sisters got the pork lau lau which came with sweet potato, rice or poi, lomi lomi salmon (more onion and tomato than salmon). i got the chicken lau lau, again stuffed with chicken, not enough taro leaves. Only six tables in the entire restaurant. The gentleman that was serving us I believe was also the bus boy, cook, server and cashier! Place is a hole in the wall with missing ceiling tiles and exposed panels above our table (gross!!). Sis loves this dive so we keep coming back!
