I came on a weeknight and was seated immediately. It was pretty quiet and only had less than five tables around 7pm. We had the baked seafood rice and vegetable curry. I see most reviews are complaining about the slow service but maybe since it wasn't busy I only waited 15 minutes or so for my baked rice. The curry came out even before that! Since this is a hk cafe I already expected that I won't get any service and would have to flag waiters down. I didn't mind this at all as I'm used to this style of service. It was interesting because I see there were at least four waiters but only the younger girl was working hard. The other ladies were chit chatting a lot behind the bar. Oh well. The baked seafood rice was delicious. Creamy white sauce over so much seafood. Shrimp scallop squid fish mushroom etc. Yum! The curry also has A LOT OF vegetables. It's crazy how many times my friends and I constantly rely on leisure for pretty great food in the early mornings or late nights. Even though sometimes their service might fall apart due to slow serving or constant lagging of communications between us and each staff.. everything seemed to be okay until new years eve. A few friends and I went there for lunch and we were done eating and waiting on our bill, we decided to pay by card and was intending to tip them by cash. But when one of the servers came over to pick up our bill and signed receipt she looked at it and started to lecture us in Chinese, quote one quote saying: "You're not tipping? You can't do that! We gave you water and tea." I was very shocked and didn't know how to react. My friend explained that we intended to pay by cash and she continue to say "Yes okay but yesterday you guys came in with around 10+ people and didn't bother to pay tip. THAT IS NOT OKAY" and I finally had time to process everything and told her "We didn't come in yesterday.." and she was like "Whatever, in the end it's not okay to not give tip cause we served you and gave you water and tea." I WAS SO HEATED. LIKE WHAT?! The most you did was probably pouring everything and brought it to our table, by demanding us to tip you and implying that we are THOSE teenagers without tipping you is NOT OKAY. Just because we are younger patron doesn't mean I will come here to eat and not tip or pay my bill. By you just implying and assuming all these unnecessary comments and lecture us is not how I intend my visit to a constant familiar restaurant. This place is much nicer than I thought when my friend said that this was a HK cafe. It had a similar style to the T4 next door and wasn't too surprised that they were owned by the same person (they're doing pretty well on expansion for their businesses). There's a nice modern feel and super clean, the tables don't feel sticky at all! The only time that this place isn't filled with people is around 3-4pm, but all the other times, there's at least a small wait. As for the service...it's definitely dependent on how the servers feeling that day, which isn't exactly the nicest for the customer; there have been times where I've been helped immediately and others where I have to ask a few times for a fork/ or just get plain ignored) The first time I came here, it was for desserts. I had the hot sesame and almond soup with a tang yuan in it (glutinous ball). It wasn't too sweet, perfect to get the individual flavors, or mix it together which actually works super well. The tang yuan was nice and not too chewy, I just wish there was more than one in it. The egg puffs were really nice too and the small portion was more than enough for me; I love the crunch on the outside and soft fluffy inside of it (that varies a bit from time to time though, so it's a lucky draw haha). Last time I came here, I tried the baked seafood with rice, baked vegetable with spaghetti and baked spaghetti with rock cod and spinach. The portion size of the dishes were huge, it lasted the 3 of us a lunch and a dinner. Dishes were super duper hot and I guess it's the design of the dish that keeps the heat in because it was still hot when we were packing the food to go. I really liked the baked vegetable dish but for the other too, it was a bit too creamy for me. At least it was easy to scrape the cheese part off and some of the sauce. The rice in the baked seafood dish was perfect egg rice, not too salty but still enough to pair well with the toppings. Because from the time you wait for a table, order and actually get your food, 2 hours will pass by. 15-20 minutes will pass in between your dishes, so if you came in a large party, expect to be there for a while. Actually, I doubt you can fit anymore than 4 people at a table, so this place isn't good for large parties at all. I can understand if a restaurant is flooded with customers and there are only 2 waiters to serve you, but if both waiters are gossiping behind the counter, unacceptable. I don't mean to be passive aggressive, I'm just highly unsatisfied with this restaurant. The food was decent but even the customers who are leaving are telling us not to order baked dishes because of how long it takes. Came in around 5PM. Only a few table occupied. Gave me a menu and 20 minutes later, they finally. Ame back to take my order. This is the second and last time I go to this place. Same service as the first time. Thought it might have been a fluke since it was busier the first time. Nope! Same this time. Other tables came in 30-40 minutes after me are done and gone and I'm still trying to get the check. Servers are all Chinese, so am I, and they just blew me off because I didn't order in Chinese. Been waiting for someone to take my credit card so I can pay but that's like pulling teeth here. Bottom line, food is good, not great, not even very good. Place looks clean. But the insides of the tea pot is filthy. They do a surface clean. Service here sucks unless you're fluent in Cantonese. A Black woman came in about 10 minutes after me. We are both still here and waiting for service. There is none here. You're better off at Macdonald's. At least they'll serve you. If you're not fluent in Cantonese, pass this place up. This is the best Hong Kong style Cafe in the bay area, period. We've been coming here ever since they opened. They have wide variety of choices, such as steak, baked pork chop rice, lamb chop, ox tail, various fried rice, spaghetti, noodle soup, some pot rice, just to make a few. We've tried at least couple dozens different dishes here and we love every one of them. The waitresses are always friendly and courteous. Service could be slow at times when they are busy. So I won't recommend going there if you are in a rush. Especially some dishes could take over twenty minutes to be ready. This place is unbeatable for the quality of food and the price you pay. It was our first time coming to this restaurant its not to far from my boyfriends house and we have walked by it a couple times so we decided to give it a try. Walked in a no one greeted us we had to wave down a waitress even then she just pointed at a table it wasn't busy in there! Once we sat down she just gave us a menu and walked off and later brought us some water. She seemed like she was agitated took our order super quick and left again! I was so confused when they first moved in. Spaghetti? At a Chinese restaurant? Whatever, it tasted good! I wasn't sure if it was authentic or what. Then my friend from Hong Kong explained how the British Colonial period had brought tons of cultural influence to Hong Kong, and contributed to what it is today, and apparently this is a very authentic HK café! I have to say most Americans wouldn't appreciate the Hong Kong cafe style food that's served here but you would think there's enough chinese folks that yelp to negate it? I always stop by Leisure Cafe in the evenings around 11pm so I've never had to deal with a terrible wait for food or bad service like the other reviews here. In the couple of times that I've been here, I've actually encountered relatively good service and a minimal wait time for food. The server I always get (man with glasses on weekend nights, usually the only server there LOL dunno his name) is always really responsive and polite. I really like how it's one of the only late-night HK cafes in San Leandro, and that I don't have to drive all the way to Shooting Star in Oakland CT for some late night grub! They have a pretty wide selection of dishes including ramen (instant lol), baked rice/spaghetti, curry, toast, and dessert. The interior is also very cute and modern and they have TVs with the games/news on. The booths are roomy and comfy, similar to Shooting Star. Things I've tried: - Baked Portuguese chicken over rice: yummy creamy sauce over chicken chunks and veggies. Quite a generous portion. Enough to serve two. And its only like $8.... Thumbs up! - Mango "dumpling"- AKA mochi with fresh mango in it. Hella bomb. but like $3.50 for 3 pcs :( -Mango sago- Tons of mango puree and pieces, but a little overwhelming for me. My family and I love this place because they have so many options available! We love their honey spare ribs, curry beef chow fun, beef stone pot rice, Hong Kong milk tea, honey lemon tea, and all the yummy varieties of desserts they offer! Nice cafe. Very busy, Saturday around noon. The photo album menu was a nice touch. Made it easier to order. Curry fun was a big portion served hot in a big white high rimed dish. Didn't try it, but looked great. The Vietnamese spicy beef was also hot is a very big bowl of soup. Tasted a hint of sweetness and was just the right amount of spiciness. But when compared to the photo in the menu, I realized it was missing the brown mushrooms, but it was still a filling meal without those mushrooms. Heard the desserts were the thing to get, so we got some. The iced durian with seeds, I think they were those jellied palm seeds. And also the iced coconut with durian and the sweet black rice. To be honest, I come here pretty often. If you're looking for DELICIOUS Hong Kong style cafe food....this is probably the best I've had in the Bay Area. But don't order the French toast (no peanut butter in the middle) and pineapple bun (tooo hard and not fresh). It's a disappointment!!! The only reason this place get 3 stars from me is because their service is pretty bad. We ordered pork chop baked rice with white sauce, which takes about 30mins to come out. I've only been to typical Chinese restaurants that serve traditional fried rice, chow mein, egg rolls, orange chicken, etc. But this place is not your typical Chinese restaurant. They have pastas (linguine, spaghetti, fettuccine,), ramen, curries, several rice dishes, and more! The majority of the rice dishes come with some type of meat and the sauce from the meat makes a great gravy for your rice. I want to recommend any of the items that I tried: Kimchi Seafood fried rice, vegetable Thai curry, the chicken with gravy over rice, salt and pepper spare ribs, salt and pepper tofu, and the mango shake! Everything was so yum! We shared between 4 people and had a ton leftover. The only thing that wasn't amazing about this place was the service. It could be that they seem to be short staffed and are extremely busy. But it took forever to call someone over to ask for something. After our food came out it's like they just forgot about us to move on to others that didn't have their food yet, so it also took forever to get the check. But honestly, it wouldn't stop me from going back (the food is that good). I come here quite a lot with my family. And my experience with here is overall very good. The max is only around two waitress in here some I would say their English really isn't that good. I never had the problem but sometimes I would see customers trying to get their attention however not succeeding the first or second time. But the waitress are friendly and the service is good. They have good food. Their style is like Chinese American food, not like the panada express one with sour and sweet whatever. They milk tea is pretty good here. No matter served hot or cold. It's the same price and I like that about it. Some other cafes charges more for cold drinks compared to hot. Today is the first time my family tried their steaks. It's not the same as American steak. It was more like the steak you would have in Hong Kong. It was really really soft and tender. It could almost melt in your mouth in a way. (Just personal opinion) It tasted really good. And their fried rice and such are worth the price since the portion is really big. Their chicken wing are also really good but it's really salty sometimes. Should give it a try. The food is honestly pretty decent, especially their baked items such as the baked minced meat spaghetti and the baked pork chop. I liked both, and it was sizzling when the server brought the plate. The unfortunate part is like all the other reviewers said, their service is not great. Probably because they have a lot of regulars, they give them more attention. Also, some of the staff do not speak English, so it makes ordering and paying a little difficult if you don't speak Cantonese. Had dinner here yesterday for a party of 3.. 15% tips is automatically added to the bill without you knowing. I normally will give 15-18% tips anyway, but felt like this policy should be stated ahead of time. Some restaurants will do that when you have a party of six or more. We saw this place one night as we were getting milk tea and vowed to try it out one day, and not long after that we found ourselves here on a Saturday for lunch. It's a casual sit down place with TVs and serves mainly HK style Chinese food. My wife's go to dish at most HK style places is the baked pork chop rice, so she ordered that and I got the Portuguese baked chicken. The pork chop rice was a little disappointing to both of us. The sauce was a little too tangy for us, almost sour. Maybe some people like it that way, but there are many other places in the area that I like the baked pork chop rice better at. I thought my Portuguese baked chicken was decent, so at least I was relatively content. They give you good portions here, so bonus points for that, but honestly we probably won't be back due to what we feel are better options in the area for this kind of food. read more
