Leopold's is a really special place, and if you enjoy Austrian/German cuisine, you should definitely visit. We've come here twice so far, and each time we've had a wonderful experience. The food is exceptional--the best Austrian/German in the Bay Area! The star of the show is the Wiener schnitzel--absolutely incredible! All of the entrees and appetizers we've tried have been delicious, especially the käsespätzle and bratwurst. They have a decent selection of German beers as well. Their desserts are sub-par, and I wouldn't recommend ordering these--but I'm optimistic that they will improve over time. Despite the less than satisfactory desserts, I still give them 5 stars because everything else is amazing, including the atmosphere! We just finished a fantastic meal at Leopold's. It was my first visit but it won't be my last. Allice provides us with excellent service. We decided to stick with the draft beer. I ordered the pale ale and J ordered the doppelbock. They offer a 2 liter boot, but I passed on that and ordered a pint. Beer was We started with 2 pretzels, note they are not on the menu, and they run out fairly early. We ordered: Jaeger Schnitzel- it was tender and cooked to perfection, served with spaetzle. Goulash- the flavor was good, but the beef was pretty tough. Short Ribs- these were tender and delicious with red cabbage and mashed potatoes. Cheesy Spaetzle- what do you think? Words cannot communicate the profound comfort and joy of Leopold's! I'd been awaiting their reopening for literally years and was not disappointed. The pork trotters were maybe my favorite bite of food this year. This place is fantastic! Came here for someone's birthday celebration and was extremely pleased with the service provided for the party of about 15. Food was so good. We got the schnitzel and the braised beef short rib which came out quickly and blazing hot. Holy delicious!! We also ordered a few of the big boots (it's a must) and they have a variety of different beers. We came on a Saturday and it was pretty busy, but the staff did an outstanding job accommodating us. While I have not been to Germany myself and cannot account first hand on the niceness of Germans, most of my friends have warned about their less than nice demeanor. But not here! I was worried we wouldn't get seating since Yelp said the place closes at 10pm and it was too late for me to book a reservation. Low and behold upon arrival they were setting up a table just for us. The German gods have spoken. This restaurant has great atmosphere in general. The walls are lined with animal head decor and the waitresses are dressed in proper German attire. Every staff member that I encountered here had a smile on their face and they seemed genuinely happy to be there. We ordered the sausage and potatoes appetizer and the Beef Goulash entree to split. The housemade sausage was really tasty and sort of had a taste of curry to me. The sauerkraut was on point and the potatoes were good but I prefer mine less mushy. The Beef Goulash was also delicious but quite hearty! This is definitely the type of dish you'd have on a bitter cold winter's night. The meat was savory and fell apart beautifully. It was served with some fried pasta looking things and a sprinkling of fried onions. I think I would have preferred the stew over mashed potatoes. The beer selection here is also great! You can never go wrong with beer and lots of it! I can't wait to come back here to try their other dishes. This place has a very unique ambiance - the walls are lined with deer heads and portraits of Austrian kings (or at least that's who my boyfriend told me they were.) All the chairs and tables are wooden and there's constant cheery music in the background. I definitely felt like I had been transported to Europe. The potato pancake had an interesting herb-y taste and my favorite part was the braised greens. Braised short rib hash ($17.95) - a poached egg nested on a stew of beef short ribs and potatoes. The poached egg tasted a little acidic (which I understand is part of the recipe sometimes, but not my favorite.) The short ribs were very tender and in such abundance that I couldn't finish the dish alone. All in all, a great place for meat-lovers, probably. Pretty bad service. We ordered one potato pancake and once we finished we ordered one more. The waitress rang it up and 5 minutes later dropped the old used plate and fork at our table. The table we sat at was shoved in the corner between the bar a the dinning area. It wasn't a table but a large wooden block with small wooden stools. The staff also seem confused and moved us to a different table when we first arrived. I would go back just to get the pancake but my friends said they won't return because of the service. read more

My supervisor brought us here because it's her favorite comfort food spot, and we were celebrating so we were ready to feast. We ordered the Housemade Salumi Platter (for two) $14.50, Käsespätzle $19.75 (add bacon +$4), Wiener Schnitzel $23.75, Braised Beef Short Rib $25.95, Choucroute Garni Platter $28.75, and a side of mashed potatoes $7.25. My favorite dish was the Mac & Cheese. It's an Austrian "Mac & Cheese" with crisp onions & green salad. It was perfectly made - so warm and cheesy but not too gooey or overloaded. The bacon was worth the additional cost because it made this dish even better. One bite into this mac & cheese and you'll know you've made a good choice in ordering this because you'll smile happily and say "mmm.." haha, or at least that was my reaction. All of the dishes that we ordered were delicious and the portions were big and hearty. The meat just slid right off the bone so tenderly and the mashed potatoes were soft and creamy, especially with that gruyère cheese, ugghhh. And can we talk about the fried onions on some of these dishes? Those need to be on every dish! This is a very fun German/Austrian restaurant to eat with a group. At Leopold's, you'll find a rowdy Austrian "Gasthaus" that offers the hugest boots of beer you'll find in the city, along with surprisingly well-executed dishes of food! Coming in for dinner is always a good time, and though the restaurant is a bit loud, the atmosphere is festive and the service is so kind and friendly! For dinner, I ordered the grilled trout--the fish was boned, wrapped in pancetta, stuffed with herbs, and served over a bed of kale stir-fry with sliced potatoes! I wasn't expecting much from this dish, but the bold, herbal flavors were so delicious, and the crispy skin contrasted nicely with the tender flesh and the crunch of the vegetables. I also tried the braised beef short rib, which came with braised red cabbage and gruyere mashed potatoes. Though the short rib came out a little dry, the mashed potatoes were to die for--they were unbelievably creamy and had such a deep, savory flavor that was hard to resist! I'd definitely recommend Leopold's if you're into some great beer, fresh flavors, and quick and friendly service. Wow. So good - and I'm talking about everything. The food, the drinks, the service, the decor - everything. A group of 6 of us walked in on Sunday after the Patriots game, looking for more beer and a nice, warm meal. They were pretty busy, so we hung out in the bar until our table was ready. The bartender was great while we waited and we thought it would be fun to get a few beer boots to share. And it was, so much fun. We moved to our table (after sitting at a bar with no food for a few hours) and pretty much ordered 2 of all the servers favorite dishes. What an experience. Everything tasted so amazing and we truly enjoyed ourselves. I wish I had taken more photos, but we ordered: Mac and cheese or "Käsespätzle" Chicken soup Braised Beef Short rib Paprika Beef Goulash The mac and cheese was out of this world. I recognize that Leopold's is a Bavarian restaurant and we probably should have ordered a sausage menu item, but damn do they make a good baked mac and cheese. Last year I came to Leopold's for the first time, with some friends. The food was wonderful, the place had a fun energy, the staff was energetic, and the beer was, well, a revelation! At the table, I was the only person who hadn't yet been to German, and I was fascinated to hear all about it from my friends. Oh,...and the food at Leopold's, .... did I mention that it is wonderful?! Fast Forward a couple of months. We were in Munich for Oktoberfest 2018....like ya' do ... and it was a flashback, for me, to Leopold's. Now whenever we come to Leopold's I feel like I'm back in Germany. I always start with a Big Boot of Hefeweizen! We all have beer and share some of their homemade sausages as an appetizer. We compete for their sauerkraut and potatoes that come along with it. As for me, I love love love their Weiner Schnitzel. It's like being back in Germany again. My partner gets the Goulash, and says it's just like his Oma used to make. I can see the memories rush across his face as he eats it. There are more traditional German/Austrian foods than you can imagine, so you'll leave Leopold's planning to come back for more. It's the kind of place you'll be telling your friends about, believe me. It makes me want to go back to Austria and Germany again soon. Had nice, relaxing brunch. The Fiaker goulash was good. Kid subbed hash browns for caraway potatoes and the hash browns were divine. The caraway potatoes were great too. Pretzel for app was delicious. Looked forward to the wiener schnitzel with great anticipation and it was oh so close! But it was the one disappointment -- the fry was light and crispy, and I appreciate having a pork loin schnitzel (chicken doesn't qualify). But the one thing is that it was WAY TOO buttery. I couldn't taste anything but butter. It came with a great, light potato and cucumber salad. I tried lightening the schnitzel with the provided lingonberry sauce but that also somehow tasted of butter. Only the mustard provided with the pretzel helped offset the butteriness. Looking for a replacement for Suppenkuche's wiener schnitzel and this comes the closest except for the over butteriness. So for now, the best schnitzel in SF is at Radhaus. read more

I've been wondering about Leopold's ever since early last year when it took over the prime corner space occupied for years by Antico Trattoria whose panna cotta I still miss. However, there was always something quite frat-house about the gregarious vibe of the place clearly reinforced by their five-liter steins of Bavarian draught beer. Just doesn't skew toward my kind of demographic if you know what I mean. But the strong reviews made me curious even if German food is not my favorite. Jamie W. and I finally found an excuse to come here by having dinner with our friend Maggie who lives nearby. It required careful coordination for us to meet up since a line already started to form about twenty minutes before its opening at 5:30PM. Sure enough, a group of skinny twenty-somethings had already congregated on the bench with their smartphones in tow. Once the front door opened, we got seated right away only to find ourselves surrounded by a rowdy party of unattractive, unshaven self-proclaimed "dudes" who kept ordering one boot of beer after another. It was challenging trying to figure out what dishes would be sensitive to our flexitarian diets, so we gave up and ordered what sounded good. The menu is described by owners Albert and Klaus Rainer as Alpine cuisine, the gut-expanding grub you would find after skiing the slopes in Austria or southern Germany. In that spirit, Jamie went for the house special, the $14.25 Paprika Beef Goulash with Butter Spätzle. It was awfully good comfort food - tender chunks of beef bathing in a thick stock complemented by eggy-puffy mini-dumplings (see photo). Delicious. Mine was the surprisingly tender $16.25 Roast Chicken Breast "Jäger Art", a healthy-size serving laid on top of a bed of red cabbage, accompanied by an herbed dumpling that tasted like turkey stuffing, all ladled with a sauce of mushrooms, pearl onions and pancetta bits (see photo). In a particularly self-indulgent mood, I also ordered a $6.25 bowl of the Soup of the Day, a Corn Chowder that was excessively buttery (see photo). For her part, Maggie wisely opted for two appetizers instead of gorging on an entree like the two of us - the refreshing $7.25 Watercress, Fennel and Arugula Salad which included apple slices, asiago cheese, almonds and celery bits (see photo) and the very German $10.25 Cured Salmon with Potato Pancake (see photo). All the food was quite satisfying. In fact, it took our combined iron will to bypass the Apfelstrudel which we saw being devoured swiftly at a neighboring table by a pair of dingos dressed like German tourists. The place was decked out like a Bavarian beer hall in a Swiss chalet. The friendly waitresses wear dirndl dresses like grown-up Heidis looking for edelweiss, including one that was quite chesty much like Colonel Klink's secretary on "Hogan's Heroes". What prevents Leopold's from evoking a true Alpine gasthaus was the escalating noise level from the rowdy packs of twenty-somethings who think nothing of screaming at each other as they become more and more inebriated. Where's Triumph the Insult Comic Dog when you need him? FOOD - 4 stars...Alpine cuisine means calorific comfort food...tasty but at what price? It amazingly delicious. And I was most excited about the Choucroute Garni Platter. It comes with pork ribs, smoked pork loin and bratwurst SO FREAKEN YUMMY! My favorite was their bratwurst. Never bring a group of 10 people because they don't take reservations! We had to wait an hour and a half plus for seats! Sad to say that the hostess in her traditional German outfit did not give us anything complimentary - especially when we were waiting outside in the cold for that long of a time! This is a good way to sample a few things if you like your meat and sauerkraut. I also ordered the salmon for contrast. (I guess this was my version of surf and turf.) I liked the dish, but found myself wishing there was more salmon. The fries were tasty. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Dessert wise, I liked the torte as I'm a huge fan of berries and cream. But my absolute favorite thing here was the boot! Yes, I drank two liters of beer in one sitting. Since I knew I'd be consuming a lot of volume, I went with he pilsner as it seemed like their lightest option. I'd never had beer in a boot, so this was really fun. Do be careful with the boot as they will charge you $50 if you break it. Super fun spot for beer and comfort food. Maybe next time, I'll try that 5L boot. It is rather tempting. read more

I felt compelled to leave a review after my last visit; we hosted a 25 person dinner here as a farewell party for a friend, and the staff at Leopold's handled it with excellence. Service was attentive, smooth, and friendly. Managing a party of that size is no joke. People trickled in at different times, but everyone was welcomed and attended to. Even though we were a huge party, everyone still got their beer and entrees on time. Leopold's didn't miss a beat - true professionals. I've passed this place a dozen times just thinking it would be a classic American brunch place, but was pleasantly surprised when my parents took me here for a Das Boot: 2L of beer displayed in a Cinderella style glass boot. I'd have to say!, if you are visiting good old San Francisco. This should be a definite place to stop. Me and my wife find ourselves looking on yelp whenever it is we choose to travel. Just because it is very useful when it comes to making a decision on where to dine, or where to find attractions. We just happen to come across this place while we were looking. And the reviews sounded good. Especially the amount of reviews. FYI, you can make reservations. Best to do so. Because this place got packed once we sat down. The food was cooked to perfection. The mixture of ingredients, spot on to myself and my wife. The desert was just as the entrée. Cooked to where your grandmother would even approve. The staff was excellent. Especially since there was only two individuals taking and delivering the orders. Kudos to the two of them. I was amazed by the amount of people dining, and for them to keep up with the orders. So to make a long story short. I'd definitely recommend this place to stop by and dine. I know I will be returning whenever it is I visit again. read more

It was our first time dining at Leopold's last night. Do we know what German/Austrian food suppose to taste like? No we don't. But do we recognize good yummy food when we eat it? Hell to the yes we do! We started off with the House Made Sausage (5/5). I'm not a fan of sauerkraut and mustard in general but I loved them in this dish. The mustard was so light and mild tasting. It went really went well with the sausage. The potatoes and the sauerkraut was cooked perfectly also. I would definitely order this dish again. My entree was the Jagerchnitzel (5/5). I must say I've always had a real fascination with chicken fried steak (sorry if I offend anyone with my comparison) but this dish reminded me of a really good chicken fried steak. It was perfectly battered and fried. The mushroom sauce added another layer of flavor. It was really yummy. My wife ordered the Braised Beef Short Rib (5/5). The beef was super tender. It was slow cooked to perfection. The mashed potatoes was creamy. I didn't mind the cooked red cabbage either. All in all we had an excellent meal here. All portions were huge. We ate half of our orders and took the other half to go for next day lunch (which we just ate prior to me writing this review). Everything was tasty reheated. We are happy! Service was excellent. 5 stars to our waitress and the gentleman who greeted us at the door. They're very friendly and attentive. We highly recommend Leopold's! Came here for a friends birthday brunch and it was great! We love the boots of mimosas

This would be one of the perfect restaurants in SF if it werent for the Bro code drinking groups that are pervasive here. But hey where there's good beer there's generally also over drinkers. That doesn't however take away from the fact that it's a lively atmosphere, some lovely servers, and quality Austrian food that even my token Austrian friend approves of many times a week when they lived down the way. House made sausagesm duck crepinette, cured salmon, charcutirie plate, goulash, Käsespätzle, Schnitzel, Choucroute, Trout have all hit the spot the few times I've gon here. I also discovered the smoked beer that goes so well with the salty meat heavy menu. I've been to the western most part of Austria, and I can see how one can be homesick for this growing up there. The drinking groups however are still decidedly American. 4.3 stars read more
