My husband and I visited NYC back in January 2025. Once we stopped at this Levain location and tried their cookies, we came back a few more times during our trip. The cookies are THAT good! We even took some in our carry-on back to California. This small, cozy shop is located in a quiet area of the Upper West Side (maybe a 10-15 min walk from Central Park). Service here is friendly and warm (just like their cookies). The girls working the counter were all really nice and they gave us recommendations for cookies to try. Someone suggested the chocolate-PB cookie and I am so glad I tried it. The toffee coffee (a seasonal flavor), coconut caramel, and the OG chocolate chip with walnuts were all really good too. Customer service is exceptional. I was surprised one of the girls working the counter recognized us after we came back. If I go back to NYC, this is a must-stop for sure! read more

Would like to add, that I've been eating blueberry muffins, scones, and the brioches for breakfast 3-4 times a week for the past several years. Gotten addicted to the cinnamon brioche. Yummm. However, the past 2 Sundays when I've gone to the 74th street location both the cinnamon and chocolate brioches have been pretty disappointing. They've been flat and heavy, short, and lacking cinnamon. When this happened for the second Sunday in a row I phoned them and learned that they have a new baker who's not yet gotten the swing of the brioches. The manager kindly offered me a $20 credit that I can use at either the 74th street or the Amsterdam Ave store (thankfully, because the brioches on Amsterdam were as delicious as always in the intervening week). I do hope that the baker at 74th Street gets the swing of it soon. Your brioches are so wonderful, your customer service is always lovely; I hate the idea that you might you let someone's baking misrepresent the quality that defines you. read more

My sister wanted to stop in here for a cookie during our adventures, and I am easily influenced, particularly where dessert is concerned, so I went ahead and got on too. The cookies were pretty big, and if you buy them in the bakery, they're warm and the chocolate is gooey. I really loved the big chunks of walnuts. The real magic, however, is that the chips were still almost gooey the next day, when I finished the cookie at the airport. These cookies are massive -- I split one with my friend. We got the Double Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookie, and it was so warm and gooey on the inside with the chocolate chips still melting. It was honestly like a brownie on the inside with how fluffy and cake-like the texture was. Our cookie was quickly gone, and it took a lot of willpower to not get another. I make the dupes of these when I bring a dessert to a friend's house or to a party. They are always a hit because they're unlike most cookies in their size and taste. So I was excited to visit the actual bakery where the real ones are made. It's a tiny little shop that's below street level, so the line serpents its way from the underground to the sidewalk. Only 5 people are allowed in at a time since that's all it can fit. The staff is super friendly and helpful and don't rush you, even thought they know there's a long line. They have all their cookies lined up, but also have other bakery treats that I didn't know about. One of those is a baguette with butter and jam. They also have loaf cakes and pastries. They also make delicious coffees and hot chocolate. I ordered the hot chocolate and it reminded me of the African style hot chocolate from Angelina's in Paris. I have known about Levain for many years and first discovered my love for it at a location in D.C. right before my hometown of Los Angeles opened its own location. Fortunately I have the ability to obtain these delicious cookies whenever I'd like but I wanted to visit the original shop that started the fame of these cookies. If you've never tried these cookies before, just know they are to die for. They are very rich, dense and sometimes it's hard to finish even just one cookie in one sitting but they are oh so good. While I've tried many of their cookies - my favorite is the classic chocolate chip walnut. Levain is also currently offering their holiday flavor which is a dark chocolate peppermint and even offer GF and vegan options for those with dietary needs. Besides the cookies, I was surprised how absolutely tiny this shop was but it gave it a very cute, humble feel. If you wanted to eat here, you could eat at the window counter but you will be standing or there is one bench outside. Given the fame, I was surprised it wasn't busy but that may just be because it was a rainy day when I came. I think it was a great experience to visiting the shop that started it all, but I would highly recommend Levain no matter what location you visit. I will first say that I was apprehensive to go here. Their signature cookie has walnuts in it which is a fundamental falacy to ruin a good cookie with nuts, but my wife had been influenced so I was going to try it no matter what. The store did look really good, and I can see why they are successful. It was very clean and the line moved quickly. We visited the NoHo NY location for our first experience at Levain. These cookies are some of the BEST I've ever had.
