This was my first time at this particular location and to say it was packed is an understatement! We visited on a Friday night likely approaching the 8 o'clock hour. The line was out the door! I've been a raving fan of Magnolia Bakery's cupcakes for years so I usually visit a location each time I'm in NYC. I was bummed because they were out of cupcakes. I was informed the banana pudding is outrageous so I purchased a small pudding and a slice of carrot cake to go. That pudding was hands down the BEST banana pudding I've ever eaten in my life and it blows the cupcakes away (keep in mind the cupcakes are scrumptious). My grandson and I enjoyed the pudding and I brought the cake back to the hotel. I ended up eating the carrot cake for breakfast two days later because I didn't want to waste it as we were flying home. The clerks at the front of the shop weren't the friendliest but the cashier was super friendly and my experience in its entirety was very good. Magnolias Bakery is wonderful - but as everyone has their own flavor profiles, you won't find everything to your liking. No one's perfect. We all have different ideas of what a cupcake should and shouldn't taste like. Some might like more butter and fluff for their icing, I on the other hand prefer more milk, cream, sugar - even some cream cheese. Magnolia Bakery is not a one size fits all. They have many different flavor profiles. I have only tried this specific location, which seems to only do buttercream cupcakes, and while I am not the hugest fan of buttercream, I was delighted. It wasn't the heaviest. Sure, it's buttercream, you will taste the butter. Some people like this, I don't. Do I wish it was lighter on the butter and a bit more punchy and creamy and a bit less buttery? Yes. I'm not a huge fan of the slick feeling on my tongue. If I'm mistaken I believe there is also now vanilla icing cupcakes and marshmallow cream frosting. A huge step up, but ultimately neither are wrong. The buttercream and the cupcake itself, is still very quite good. It's soft, airy, I do wish it was more moist, but I believe I may have gotten one that wasn't so fresh. Either way, still a very good cupcake. But... don't let the cupcakes make you skip it!! Their blueberry jamboree squares and their banana bread pudding... are spectacular. So good, I went in, and walked out having eaten most of what I bought (the pudding and jamboree square). Now, as for their lemon bar! Wonderful flavor. So punchy, but might be overwhelming for some. I'd definitely add much more of the shortbread on them to even out the tartness. I'd even add graham crackers and oatmeal to the crust. Or truthfully, more milk and butter. I'll tell you what though, they are NOT forgettable. Would be so good with some whipped cream and crumble. Overall, not perfect, but not worth scathing. They've definitely been working on their recipes from what I can tell, but their baseline is more than acceptable. I do believe they're worth the hype. If it's too sweet for you, I can understand, but don't knock it till you try their Blueberry Jamboree. It was great!! And while their buttercream cupcakes might need a little work, I can't say that I disliked them. The buttercream *was* dreamingly fluffy and airy. It is definitely a texture I won't pass up on the next time. But most importantly, their customer service is typically very good. I would visit this location just to check it out again because I can't with the one at Grand Central, but after so many different experiences with Magnolia I think I prefer to stick to my west side location or the one in Rockefeller. Magnolia's Banana Pudding is one of the better ones I've tried, but still not enough to convert me to a Banana Pudding lover. The banana cream was whipped to a very rich, but light, creamy texture. The queue loops around the deep room, populated by steady stream of customers. Upbeat contemporary music blends with the echoes from Bloomingdales. Many staff members eagerly attend to patrons, while others masterfully hand-frosting cupcakes and prep other baked items. Bakery items are curated across the long display counter, while pudding is prepacked into takeout tubs and kept chilled within a minifridge. My partner and I arrived midday to a 5-minute line, and we opted to split a medium Banana Pudding and a Chocolate Buttercream Chocolate Cupcake. The pudding consisted of 3 simple ingredients: chewy but not soggy vanilla wafers, dense and smooth vanilla pudding, and chunks of banana.
