My husband and I have been dining at Library II for 45 years. Recently we have been going to Happy Hour on a regular basis and consistently have had rude bartenders. Tonight a bartender left a glass on the bar and my plate accidentally bumped the glass off the edge and into a basket of chilled glasses. The reaction from the bartender was insulting and disrespectful. After apologizing, her response back was "stay on your side" then ignored and failed to service us for the remainder of our visit. Very disappointing that a few bad bartenders can taint my long term enjoyment at one of my favorite hometown establishments. Unfortunately we don't plan on going back anytime soon. read more

$25 dollars for a meh steak sandwich and an extra $3 for fries. Oh and if you want the Sizzler style salad bar, tack on another $12. While at the salad bar, another diner told me that the Pub had bought out the original owners and since then the menu has been tweaked and the prices have skyrocketed. It made sense considering the salad bar was a parred down version of the Pub and the prime rib steak sandwich was over cooked. Recommended to me by locals - wanted to try something more local to the area then Flemings steakhouse. The place looks fairly nondescript from the outside, it's easy to get to on 73 and has a very large parking lot. It was moderately busy on a Monday night, but we were able to get a reservation for 10 people without a problem an hour before. The place is very dark inside - definitely not a place you can read in! More like club lighting, but the decor is very tasteful and fits the place perfectly. There are real books all along the walls (feel free to peruse and check them out). The hostess will sit you down and explain how the place works (spoiler - you don't order at the table, but at the butcher window past the salad bar). I ordered a 16 oz prime rib, mushroom caps, and garlic mashed potatoes. While waiting for the food to come out, we went and partook in the extensive salad bar. The salad bar was great, very fresh and well-stocked with a number of different pre-made salads (potato, cole slaw, etc...) as well as make your own salads and some breads. They even had quite a bit of fresh fruit to boot. The prime rib was huge - I swear it was closer to 24 oz. than 16oz. It came bone-in and it was some of the tastiest I ever had. The horseradish and au just I got with it gave it the perfect flavor. Sauteed mushroom caps were great, as well as the garlic mashed potatoes. I couldn't finish the meal, but I tried and loved every bite. It was not a cheap mean however - something around $45 just for the prime rib. Where do we begin with this piece of trash. The first thing that I noticed when walking into this restaurant was a moldy and musky smell. Probably due to the decomposition of the thousands of books that have been here for years combined with heat, humidity, cold, and other nasty conditions. Item 2: Bad drinks, I ordered a regular margarita, low alcohol content, rather tasteless concoction. I had to put in 3 slices of lime to enhance the flavor. Item 3: Salad bar. The items tasted a bit strange, how can romaine lettuce taste strange? Onions? It was a bit bizarre. The dressings were of the industrial gallon jugs. Full of corn syrup, pure garbage. Item 4: The bread was also weird tasting, similar to frozen loaves, de-thawed and re-heated in the oven. Not good. Item 5: Extremely dark. Please turn on the lights so I don't stab myself. Item 6: The steak..... What can I say, yet another strange tasting piece of beef. It seems like this rib-eye was treated in an enzyme bath to break down the muscle fibers. It was not good. Item 7: Waitress, nice girl, but she needs to find another way to make money asap. Not attentive at all. Of course, why would she care? Item 8: They charged me a PROCESSING FEE!!! Well...it finally happened....I stopped by after work last Friday. I mainly needed a drink or two but in the back of my mind I always know I can get a great steak (or a cut of meat of some sort) there. After all, I have been going there for over 25 years. So....I decide to order Prime Rib. It looked good when I got it, but I quickly found out it was tough and chewy. After a couple bites I sent it back. So I switched it up in case it was just a bad Prime Rib night. I ordered a Rib Eye this time. Again, it looked good when I got it. Well this was even worse. Way undercooked (I wanted Medium), gristly, and even more chewy than the first one. Can you say majorly disappointed? This was only the second cut of meat I ever sent back at this location, but to send back 2 in one night was pitiful. Not impressed. The salad bar was a little off. All the vegetables too thick and difficult to cut. We ordered a 10oz filet and the veal chop special which came with rice or potato and choice of french onion or lobster bisque. The entrees were delivered before the soup. Although the meats were cooked to the doneness requested, the filet was not hot and didn't have much flavor. I didn't order a side with the filet, so I got just a hunk of meat on a plate. I gave 2 stars because our waitress was pretty good on the drink orders. Our bill was $186 for 2 entrees + salad bar and 2 drinks each without tip. Adding insult to injury, they charge a 3.5% service fee for paying with a credit card. For the price, there are a lot of fine dining restaurants I'd rather go to than the Library II. read more

I grew up going to the Library for a delicious steak dinner. Went there last evening for dinner and the last time I was there was right before Covid hit . Needless to say, the ambience was perfect. Nicely dimmed lighting , decorated for Christmas, while the fire place had an ever going fire. Our waitress was please by and attentive throughout our dinner. I got the 10 oz filet medium, with mushrooms and onions on the side , with a loaded baked potato. The steak was a prime cut of meat , cooked to perfection , with a side of auj jui. The steak was so delicious that I couldn't stop thinking about it the day after. I'll be back in the spring and plan on continuing to eat at the library when I want a perfect steak dinner. If I could give 0 stars I would. Horrible service. Food was poorly cooked. Josh our server was not of sound mind and body. He was totally checked out and his co-workers were scrambling to pick up the slack. Took 45 minutes to get drinks. Steaks were delivered to the table, but had to wait 15 minutes to get our potatoes and other sides ordered. Asked for utensils multiple times and never received them. Had to go get them off another table. Steaks and potatoes were over done and under seasoned. Water served at the table was undrinkable tasted like dirt. Asked three times to speak to the manager, never came to the table. Entertainment was the engaging conversation with people at neighboring tables sharing their dismay at how bad their experiences were too. We played the game of who came in first, when were you served and was it right or good? After asking 4 people for the check and waiting 45 minutes, walked up to the register and ask to speak to the manager so we could pay and leave. Manager passes us off on the bartender and bolts, never apologizes for the circus. Expect A LOT more out of service and quality of food for the prices! We used to really enjoy going here. Absolutely terrible experience. I planned on getting a filet which came with a baked potato or rice. I asked if I could substitute with creamed spinach which was the same price on the menu. They didn't even offer for an up charge. Not only did the manager say no and had no explanation but then as we were leaving, the a man named Dave (who may have been the owner) tried to approach me as if to intimidate me by saying "is there a problem here?". This place is pretty good actually. Service was very good, food is consistently decent to good and really the only opportunity is just that you feel like you are time warping back to the 80's with the dark and dusty dining room with old furniture and books around. I guess it kind of is what it is. Ordering your choice of steak or entree from a little window and then hitting the fantastic fresh salad bar with lots of choices to build your own custom salad. The cheese and bread selection is abundant, and you get to hack your own hunks of bread and cheese with a little knife. The steaks come out cooked pretty close to requested temperature. I guess there is no fryer because there is a noticeable absence of French fries (at a steak place???) or any other fried foods. I think there are probably better steak places for the price you are paying here but you would have to head into the city. This place is a fixture in the South Jersey area, but I just feel like when the current older generation fades out there may not be a place for this restaurant anymore unless they update, change and become more relevant. read more

The food was really good here. They have an open salad bar there for you with many varieties that you can choose from. I ordered the prime rib and it was a huge portion. Ordered it medium rare and came out perfect and delicious! And also ordered the sweet potato on the side and that was really good as well. Only things I didnt really like about this place and got me a bit confused was the ordering system that they have there. You have to go up to the window to order from a blackboard they have there and the window was right next to the salad bar. I was there for my sister's birthday and it was a big group of us up there making it hard for other customers to get through and grab stuff from the bar. I just don't get why they do that when they have servers there to take your order. Another thing is that the place is really dark. Definitely will not be returning. Ordered the salmon and crab cake special for $48. When we got our order the crab cakes were missing. Wanted to tell the waiter that for some reason never came to our table because she was too busy kissing up to the table next to us. She kept asking the table next to us how their food was and if everything was ok at least 20 times but never once stopped by ours the whole night. The ordering is a bit strange as you have to walk up to the butcher who takes your order. Maybe if the waiter took the orders he wouldn't have missed our crab cakes. I'm all over the street on this one. Stopped in for dinner knowing it was on the pricey side having seen the $$$ on Yelp, so the amount of the check did not bother me too much and the food was good. The place very comfortable and wait staff up to par, however there were a few things that really detracted from the experience. The positive first. Their salad bar is to die for. They have it all, and I'll list some of my favorites that you don't normally see like anchovy, beets, hard boiled eggs, hot peppers, plenty of fresh lettuce of several varieties and a premixed light Cesar salad with extra dressing right there. Additionally there are various types of fresh hard crusted breads with plenty of butter if your so inclined. Also, some nice light cheeses to munch on. I think the salad bar is a menu item if your not into eating a full meal. I'm sure it's on the menu so take a look. Ordered a petite filet for my wife and a really nice cut of prime rib for me. Both were cooked perfectly. I should have noticed, but did not, that the dinner only consisted of the meat. Potatoes or vegetables were extra. Didn't miss them that much because of salad bar. I like my wine, and as long as I have some bread and a salad and I'm OK with dinner coming out a little on the slow side. What I do not care for, is just starting my salad and wine and having the main course dropped in front of me. Maybe my fault since you order the dinner from the kitchen just off the main seating area. A slow night because of the NFL playoffs, which the Eagles lost, so their was no back up in the kitchen. So I ate my salad with my prime rib making me feel rushed. An easy to solve problem if you know the system by getting your salad first and then putting in your order. Let me know how that works. Not against kids in a restaurant, but there were two children of some relation to the workers or owners (an assumption) one of whom was helping the hostess. However, the other just ran back and forth on the tile floor (in front of the salad bar) dragging his feet and making it distracting and uncomfortable. Been here on a few different occasions and they have no clue how to cook a steak to match a customers liking. On every visit, my steak went back because it was not cooked properly. Along with improper cooking, they do not season the meat; nothing, no salt, pepper, or any seasoning. For money I spent for those filets, I was disappointed with each visit. What made the one visit the worst; you pick your meat at the window and the filet I received was NOT what was cut in front of me. No competition for the poorly cooked meals or messed up order. Big Fan! I love this place. My family and I will usually go here for my birthday dinner (almost every year for at least 15 years!) and everything has always been so delicious. The salad bar has every possible cold side you could want (salad, cheese, bread, fruit, etc), but the hot sides are also awesome; they're served separately family style so there's usually enough to share. Sautéed mushrooms are a favorite. The steak is prepared perfectly: melt-in-your-mouth tenderness and amazing flavor. The lobster-- OH, the lobster-- is so delicious. Even the clarified butter is decadent: they use a little white wine to enhance the flavor. I have to say I'm genuinely surprised by some of these negative reviews because after nearly two decades of my family coming here to celebrate special occasions, the quality remains consistent at Library II; just sit back and savor every bite! read more

I'm a vegetarian. I'm reviewing a steak house. And I'm giving it 5 stars. One of the most annoying things one hears as a vegetarian is "oh, but they have a salad bar for you." 99% of the time, being reduced to eat from the salad bar alone is really awful. The Library is the exception. Our group of friends goes here once or twice a year. The rest of the group gets their enormous steaks or whatever other meat product they eat, a few side dishes, and also starts out with the salad bar. I honestly don't know how they do it, because with just eating from the salad bar, I'm completely full. Everything in the salad bar is fresh and clean. There is a huge variety of your normal salad things, some things you wouldn't normally have on a salad, some side salads, fruits, cheeses, and a variety of breads and whipped butter. I usually get the salad bar and order a baked potato, and also pick off of whatever vegetable side-dish my husband gets with his huge dead cow. The service here is always good. We are always greeted at our table right away, drinks are delivered promptly, and the main course is usually delivered at just the right time interval after salads. The Library has a great martini menu, especially during the holidays, and I usually indulge in one. Desserts are also top notch. Most recently I had the carrot cake, which was great, but everything I've had there has been good - the peanut butter pie, cheese cake, crème brûlée.... all good. I always look forward to our group's trips to The Library. It's a little pricey (at least for those eating meat), but everyone is always pleased with their meals, and so you get what you are paying for. Not very friendly either. Went to get salad was like a buffet and it was trashed by the group in front of us. Guy coughed all over food, gave up getting salad. Finally after dust seemed forever we got meal and it was very good but very little. We saw the beef shrank down so small and the mushrooms were too much as if was to make up for the tiny beef. I have never had a bad meal here. First, the salad bar is to die for. I have come here once or twice and opted just for the salad as my family has eaten the steak. The salad bar offers everything under the sun. It also offers different kinds of fresh breads, bagels, and cheeses. It is simply wonderful. The steak is also to die for. If you are unfamiliar with this kind of steak restaurant, you order at their window and actually speak to workers in the kitchen. They then will weight, cut, and cook your desired meat for you. They are so knowledgeable if you are unsure how and what to order. If you have a question for them, ask. They cook anything you ask for to perfection. I usually enjoy the filet mignon or the New York sirloin but everything that I have tried has been simply delicious. My father usually gets the ribeye and loves it as well. Management is also very friendly. When we first started to go to the Library II, my father had once ordered the end cut and was a little disappointed in it being that it usually comes well done or more. Management came over and had an awesome conversation about the meats in the kitchen and even came out with a second choice of meat for him to try (the ribeye). Which he loved and usually gets. In my opinion, the only thing that sets this apart from any other steakhouse is the salad bar, which is quite long and exhaustive. Plan to wait in a slow-moving line to get your salad. Speaking of waiting in line, you also get to do that to "pick out"/order my steak or seafood wasn't really worth it (and can technically be done in many other steak houses).
