I've been eating at Little Red Barn Steakhouse since I was knee-high to a grasshopper whenever my family made the trip to San Antonio. The building has grown over the years, but it still feels like the same Little Red Barn I remember; a place where good steaks, good folks, and good memories all come together. I was greeted by a smiling waitress dressed in a cowgirl outfit topped with a white cowboy hat, which fit the place about as well as boots at a rodeo. She handed me a menu big enough to cover a wagon wheel and took my tea order. Before she could even get back with my drink, another server swung by with a crisp, chilled salad and asked what dressing I'd like. Around here, service isn't a one-person job, everybody seems to pitch in. After looking over the menu, I settled on the 20-ounce porterhouse with a baked potato loaded with all the fixin's. While I waited, I took in the dining room. The walls are covered with ranch brands and names from all over Texas, reminding you this place is proud of its roots. Around me were families celebrating birthdays, grandparents visiting with grandkids, and couples enjoying supper together. The long picnic-style tables are made for passing plates and making memories, and that's exactly what folks were doing. When my steak hit the table, it arrived still sizzling on a silver platter beside that loaded baked potato. One bite told me everything I needed to know. The porterhouse was tender, juicy, and packed with beefy flavor. Truth be told, it didn't need a drop of steak sauce, though bottles of A.1. and Heinz 57 are there if that's your thing. The waitress checked on me throughout the meal despite leaving an entire pitcher of sweet tea within arm's reach, making sure I never wanted for anything. Little Red Barn isn't trying to compete with those high-dollar steakhouses where the steaks cost as much as a truck payment. Instead, it sticks to what Texans appreciate: generous portions, honest prices, friendly service, and steaks that'll have you scraping the plate clean. Saddest thing ever to see an iconic SA steak house go by the wayside and their signature handcut steaks are now less than 1/4 inch. My husband & I are older (Boomers) and live on the NE side, but this was our go to place for a decent cut T-Bone or Ribeye since our childhood. Often on our family's special occasions we would drive to S Hackberry for what used to be some of the best pan fried T-Bones & Ribeyes. Last time we went, we thought it was just an off day. For this Father's Day, we went and imagine our surprise to now see the steaks so thin that even a medium rare looks well done! Once I got home, it measured to 1/4". So sad!!! read more

When you walk in you are given a salad as soon as you are seated. They offer a choice of several salad dressings that are homemade daily. The Green Goddess is incredibly delicious and garlicky. It's been on the menu since they opened in 1963. Then they present a huge menu poster at each table. The menu is very simple. All entries come with salad, homemade rolls, choice of potato and drink. The ribeye was fork tender and cooked perfectly. The chicken fried steak was crispy and came with a choice of 3 different gravies. The restaurant had some kind of historical marker. Service was great. The steak , not so awesome. What I was able to eat was good. Ordered 12oz t-bone. If you remove the bone and All the fat and gristle, not much meat left to eat. Do they weigh the fat and gristle and charge me for it? Huge disappointment, went there to celebrate. More than likely won't go back. I'm 50 and have been coming here since I was a kid. My husband has never liked it but indulges me now and then. This time he ordered a Tbone and it came out thin and with no fillet to speak of. Very pitiful! Once the manager finally arrived he came back and said the cooks said that's how they always cut it. He admitted he had no idea how it was supposed to be cut. How does the manager of a steakhouse not know the basics of cuts of steaks? They continued to stand by their cut and it is clearly wrong. My husband KNOWS his cuts of beef and this was an absolute joke. Thanks for reinforcing why he never wants to come here. I only get the chicken fried steak. I would not recommend any "real" cuts of steak here. And I'm still bitter that there are no crackers at the table any more. I never enjoy my salad like I used to. I read all the negative reviews on here and the response is always "this was not up to our standards", yet these things keep happening. Please do better! Really wasn't sure what to expect going to the oldest steakhouse in San Antonio, I was not disappointed! Love seeing your family run restaurant with such a warm and comforting, feeling as you walk in the door. Stamps of all the ranches they get their beef from surrounding the walls. My server was phenomenal! Walked me through the menu, explaining it was my first time here. Definitely as old-school steakhouse as you're gonna get. The meal was very good. The salad and green goddess salad dressing tasted like it was homemade and came in a large pitcher for using as much or as little as preferred. The rolls were a delight and the individually portioned West Creek spread kicked it up a notch. The sirloin and green beans were excellent. The dessert (see photo) was just ok/meh. Service was great. There were only a handful of dinners in the large eating area which is Texas Ranch themed. The parking lot was also large and had security. Parking is free! We came here on 01/04/2026 for a family birthday celebration. First off great service super nice and very attentive to everyone in the party. It was my first time ever trying this place so I was very excited I ordered the tenders with fries and gravy for my kiddos, and I got the steak and shrimp plate. I don't like undercooked meat so when I asked for well done it was cooked to perfection. The vibe was very welcoming and I felt so at home. One thing that was a little let down was the women's restroom, one of the stalls was very dirty with someone else's "duty" and it was a very unpleasant thing to see as you walk in and not to the mention the smell. I've been coming here since I was a kid and tonight's experience was horrible. The food was awful. My wife ordered the chicken fried chicken and it tasted like fish. The breading was awful and the chicken was bland and overcooked. I had the chopped steak with gravy that looked like it was scraped off the back of the fryer. It was also undercooked. I asked for medium well and got medium rare. Disgusting. Our waitress was absolutely horrible. Sat behind a partition most of the time and rarely came by to check on us. We were a larger party so they of course charge 20% which explains the crappy service. If I could give this negative stars, I would. This used to be a good place but it's really gone downhill these last few years. Skip it! Too many other places that are way better at a more reasonable price. read more

Everything! The salad is fresh and the ranch dressing is good. We decided against the Culinaria menu because it was so much food. We split the chicken fried steak. This needs a lot of help. The meat and the breading had an odd taste. The brown gravy was a gloopy sauce. Even the baked potato, with all the extras was lackluster. The restaurant is stuck in time: picnic tables and country music in the background. The waitresses are in cowboy attire. The service is fast and courteous. One of my favorites back in the day and about 15 years since my last visit. An iconic landmark. Not much has changed cattle brands & menu items on the walls. As well as servers in western themed attire, salads delivered as you're seated and salad dressing on the tables. Meeting a bunch from back in the day. A little chaotic - 20+ people will do that. Absolutely terrible. If I could give it zero stars, I would. We went because everyone kept saying this was the place in San Antonio to take our new airman for a great steak. What a joke. $32 for a steak worse than what you'd get at a basic chain restaurant for half the price. Ribeyes were paper-thin, bland, and one was so tough my son couldn't even eat it. Came here during restaurant week: They had a special for rib eye steak, baked potato, salad, and dessert for $35. We went around 5pm during the week and it was not busy. Our server was nice, and food came out fast. My steak was cooked well done when I had requested medium. Rib eye was a thin cut, so I'm not sure if that's one of the reasons why it was overcooked. The bread and butter they serve is delicious. The bread is so soft and fluffy. Cheesecake was larger than expected. Lots of space for large parties. read more

We went on a Saturday night and this place was, PACKED. We surprisingly didn't wait too long (believe it was under 40 ish minutes). The tables are picnic tables and sit a good amount of people around them comfortably. A family member with me got the country fried steak, which they reported was pretty good. Another got the steak sandwich, which is a Philly cheese steak, which they enjoyed. I got the chop steak which was subpar, and if I go back, will be getting something else. I'm STILL talking about them. Seriously. The salad?? They literally leave the ranch dressing container at your table. And it's HOMEMADE. So so good! I had the steak and shrimp, which was perfectly portioned for lunch. My companion had the country fried steak, which had a nice white gravy. If you love steak fries, you won't be disappointed.
