Sandwiches were great, I wish I remembered or had taken pictures to show and tell. Just passing through and didn't want the usual fare with two kids choosing. We arrived at just the right time as all tables were reserved or full within minutes of walking in(just something to keep in mind if you are around lunch time). One of the BEST meals we've had on our drive down from Portland! I had the Santa Fe chicken sandwich and hubs had the meatball sub! Both were awesome! The wait staff was lovely and attentive! We stopped here for lunch on our way to Arcata based primarily on the high ratings. It was 93 degrees when we pulled into Willits so a heavy sandwich didn't sound too appealing to me. I noticed that they had a corn dog on their menu, so I decided to order one because I figured it would tide me over until we reached our destination. I also ordered a small salad. I was excited to eat the corn dog, becasue as an adult how often do we have the opportunity to eat one? Perhaps once a year at the fair? And, I'll admit, I love corn dogs. Well, sadly this is probably the absolute worst corn dog I've ever eaten. It was simply a frozen corn dog that they microved and put on a plate. The corn batter around the hot dog was soggy, not the crispy fried goodness of the ones you buy at a fair. I was pretty disappointed. And to top of my experience, upon paying I asked the cashier if they had anything sweet. I figured I could have a sweet treat to make up for my disapointing lunch. The cashier said, yes, that they have chocolate chip cookies. I agreed to purchase two, but as she was pulling them out of a cookie jar, I noticed that they were suspiciously uniform and perfectly shaped. This indicated to me that they were not homemade and I asked the cashier such. She said, no, that they were not homemade but that people liked them. At this point she had already bagged them and I was too embarassed to not buy them. After getting into the car and taking a bite, my suspicions were confirmed. They were chocolate chip cookies either from Costco or Safeway, or some other mega store that sells them in large quantities. So I had a microwave corn dog and a Costco chocolate cookie for lunch. Not exactly the quaint, small town, local restaurant I envisioned having lunch at. It sounds like many of their reviews are based on their sandwiches. If it had not been 93 degrees, and too hot for me to eat a heavy meal, maybe I would have had a better food experience. We found this great sandwich shop! It was a spur of the moment decision to have one of the best Cordon Bleu sandwiches along with a Reuben hotdog. The portions were awesome, the help was spectacular and prices were reasonable. On our way back to Texas, we plan on stoppin' and grabbin' another bite. See y'all soon! read more

Awesome atmosphere in this cafe!! My family and I ordered 4 meals and it took a bit of time to get to us but it was DEFINITELY worth the wait!!! It has a very homey vibe but the food was incredible!! Everything was fresh and delicious. I got a grilled cheese and it came with real cheese as opposed to processed fake cheese. Although I am vegetarian, my family loved the meat and said it was delicious. Super cheap as well!!! Definitely recommend!!! read more

Either way, the Loose Caboose sits tucked away from the main drag of Willits. I stopped by this cozy little restaurant with some locals (my sis & her hubby) for a bite. I went with a sandwich whose innards escape me, but I do remember liking it. It was washed down with a bottle of ale (many of which to choose from here). I just moved to Willits and due to the outstanding reviews on Yelp, I had to visit this place. I am literally mid-sandwich as I write this review. Let me begin with the service. The customer service was some of the best I've ever had the pleasure of receiving. The woman who took my order asked if this was the first time I'd been here and when I said yes, made a point of introducing herself (wont mention her name since it's such a small place and this is the internet). Each employee made a point to smile as they walked by me and they refilled my soda when I got my take out order without my having to request it. I texted my fiancée while I was waiting and told him that I had never been to a restaurant where the overall feel of the place was genuinely happy, but that's how it was here. I ordered the Santa Fe Chicken Sandwich. This sandwich was probably big enough for me to eat for lunch and dinner, but it was so tasty it didn't make it that long. (Yes, I stopped writing this review for a moment because the sandwich easily persuaded my full attention. The sandwich is finished!). Sometimes when I order a toasted sandwich, it ends up cutting my mouth because the bread gets too hard. Not here, it really is done perfectly. A great place that, lucky for me, is in my new hometown. Unfortunately, having discovered it will undoubtedly earn me some extra workout time, but it is very much worth it! read more

I was driving up from Sacramento to the Mendocino Coast and was looking for place to get lunch on the way. Thank goodness for Yelp and thank you fellow Yelpers. I wouldn't have found this place, or even looked for it, had it not been for the nice reviews it got. It's tucked off the main drag, but it's only a detour of a couple of blocks off of the Highway 20/101 route. And it's well worth the detour. Others, including the locals, seemed to agree. We arrived at noon on Monday and within twenty minutes the small inside dining area was full and the patio was filling up. They were even saving tables for called-in reservations. (Reservations for a soup and sandwich stop?!) The sandwiches are large and filling. On the recommendation of the waitress, I had the Chicken Santa Fe and my wife had the Extreme Veggie. Both came on nicely toasted rolls - crunchy on the outside, but still soft. Bread is such an overlooked, but important part of any sandwich, isn't it? Both sandwiches were very tasty. I know, because I ate mine and then finished what remained of the other. I'm not usually one to get a veggie sandwich, but I must admit that this one would have satisfied me. I related when Liz Lemon used the memory of a sandwich she ate once as a way to make-out with Jack's nemesis in the elevator. Over the weekend we were passing through Willits on our way from Sacramento to Westport. We were looking for a place to eat lunch that wasn't a chain and either had take-out available or outdoor seating because we had our dog with us and it was too hot to leave her in the car. Loose Caboose Cafe ended up being perfect for us. We found parking nearby in a public lot and walked about a block. I had the dog with me and my husband was going to check the menu for a take-out order. When the server asked if he was with me (the woman with the dog standing outside), he confirmed that he was, the server invited us to sit on the patio. As we walked in there was already a dog with his people enjoying lunch. When the server took our drink order she even offered to bring water for Molly, our dog. Apparently it is common for dogs to visit because they had dog dishes available. My husband and I each had a sandwich. My husband had a lemonade and I had water. Our bill including tip ended up being $26. Based on the one dollar sign listed above I expected it to be a bit cheaper, but the meal was well worth the money. If you are not ordering a beverage you can get a meal is under $10, but I think if you plan on ordering a beverage you should plan in the neighborhood of $12 plus a tip. Service seemed a bit slow for lunch, but servers were great. My only suggestion is that chips or a small side be added with sandwiches. read more

I had heard about this little space and everyone who knew of it simply raved about it. Since I also own a "La Loose Caboose" (but a real caboose) I had to go try it. The verbal reviews shared with me were right on. The atmosphere was quaint and very appropriate, the staff was super friendly and oh boy was our lunch terrific! I had the Santa Fe chicken sandwich and went in very hungry and came out very satisfied. This was a delicious blend of chicken, guacamole, bacon, and spreads on good bread. The price was fair ($6.95, I believe) as the ingredients weren't just the cheapest thing the restaurant supply had, but good stuff. I had a moment to chat with the owner who had been at the helm of this establishment for 21 years. She was in the back helping make the food and that kind of involvement is what makes this place succeed. My timing was good getting into the Loose Caboose because I beat the swell of locals and tourists for lunch who occupied every seat in the house. You can always tell a good place because the servers called many of the guests by name, showing that locals knew a good thing when they ate it. If you find your way to Willits and want to get side tracked into something good that also represents local charm, don't miss this train. read more

Stopped by again for amazing food! After reading other reviews we decided to try sandwiches that seemed the most popular and ordered the turkey depot with bacon and the Santa fe chicken. We split both sandwiches, and I'm glad we did because both were great! The bacon was really good quality and really does take the turkey depot to another level. The Santa fe is a hit as long as you like avocado, which we do. The flavors of the sandwich mixed with the cheddar cheese is amazing. If it weren't for the friendly people who work there I would of given it one star. It's small and cramped. No air/circulation. The menu is very limited. It's got a lot of stuff on it but it's very similar(ish) in options. I ordered a turkey melt and was just awful. My wife and child didn't like their meals either. Parking is VERY limited in their lot, they don't take cards, and the service is slow. That's all pretty important to know before you decide to stop here. The place is adorable, and the food is pretty good. I had the chicken pesto sandwich and my girlfriend had the locomotive chef salad. No complaints on any of the food - it was well-prepared and as good as (if not a little bit better) you would expect for the price. Some locals were in the restaurant while we were there, with the adults drinking and talking VERY loudly at one table, right next to us, while their children were at another table, screaming and crying. I don't hold that against the restaurant, but it was unfortunate. Make sure you save room for dessert and stop by the general store next door for some ice cream. read more

Cozy little sandwich shop! I couldn't decide between the veggie and extreme veggie sandwich so asked the waitress to surprise me. She made the sandwich how she would order it. It was AWESOME. There aren't a ton of places to try in Willits but Loose Caboose is pretty good. Sandwiches are very tasty- great selection, good ingredients and the bread is perfect sandwich bread. They also have a good selection of reasonably priced bottled beers. Sit outside on a nice day. read more

They seem to have rearranged their table placement and it is an incredibly tight squeeze now. Recently, I was seated in the center of the room and the gentleman sitting behind me was so close that our chairs were touching, he was a really animated talker and every time he moved his arms it shoved my ribs into my table, it was actually painful. We had to move the table about a foot, which only caused the same issue for the person sitting across from me and the woman behind him, and blocking an already small aisle. The booths are just as bad, I'm not a large woman, but I'm not a toothpick, and it is a really tight fit just to get into a booth. read more

We decided to eat lunch in Willits and many of the yelp emtries had two dollar signs and we were looking for a reasonable place to eat. We stopped by this restaurant and we were the only ones in the restaurant. I guess we were early because soon after we arrived, all of the tables were filled. The menu seemed reasonably priced, which was about $9 - $10 per sandwich and was delicious. They don't serve fries and I kinda missed them but it was definitely worth the visit. read more
