Bro J and TT arrived on Friday and we headed to La Choza without reservations. When we learned of the one hour wait, we got back in the car and headed for Café Castro. Hmmmmm, closed since last year, so Yelp helped us find Los Amigos, a little off the path beaten by the tourists. It is well rated without having 200 reviews which I always find promising. From the outside, it is deceiving. It is not all lit up and is not on a main street where a lot of people would drive by and just say, "Hey, there is a place, let's try it". Yet they were full with a 15 minute wait, which tells me they have a loyal local clientele. The salsa would not be a reason to go here, it is pretty much sweet, tomato puree, but then I never go somewhere for chips and salsa, so that was a throwaway. On the other hand, Bro J's carne adovada was remarkable, nearly the best of the trip so far out of 3-4 places. This is about the richest carne adovada can be without being too much so. Absolutely delicious with tender, moist well cooked pork. This put Maria's in perspective. Get your red chile fix here. I ordered a big bowl of pork and green chile stew. It is a brothy style, with largish chunks of pork and potato. It did not have a ton of green chile, but it was really good, a homemade style. I dressed it with a squeeze of lime and a dash of salt and it was perfect. TT had her usual chilles rellenos. The red chile she had on top that was extremely rich, like the adobo on the carne. Bro J's side of posole stayed with the rich red theme. This is not soup. It had large chunks of very good pork and not so much corn. The style is redder, richer and thicker than typical. Very good. On the slight downside, the frijoles are pintos, served whole (which is good) but I thought they needed a little salt and somehow they were a little sweet. The rice was the plastic pellet kind, like Maria's and pretty tasteless. So far we are 0 for 3 on rice this trip. In summary, this is a great, home style place. You will enjoy excellent carne adovada or pork and green chile stew. Our service was excellent and the prices are reasonable. You can expect to wait a little but it is worth it. read more

A local favorite!! Diverse menu. Whatever you are in the mood for. From the Lunch & Dinner menu: Tacos are always great. But my go-to is the Enchiladas with Blue Corn Tortillas. Generously stuffed with ground beef or shredded chicken, but I like just cheese and onions. Recently tried the Patty Melt. Super tasty with grilled onions on rye toast, get the curly fries. I asked all members of our party for a rating and we all said 3. We had to wait for quite a while to order. Asked for more chips, didn't come till after our food came out. Son ordered a beef burrite. It was just plain ground beef inside a tortilla. No chile sauce. He put his side of rice and beans inside of it, to make it edible. Three enchilladas are very tiny, rice is okay, nothing special and the pinto beans are just cooked pinto beans. Service is so slow, the food quite bland, we all agree we wouldn't go back. I hope it was just a bad day for them. They could do so much better than pulling chips out of a bag. The waitresses need to care about their job. read more

Outstanding place. I know this place is owned by the same people as the Pantry and Flying Tortilla, and I'd probably not come here for breakfast (I enjoy the ambience of the other two restaurants), this place is perfect for a quick lunch or dinner. The green chile is outstanding here and I had it on my cheese enchs. Superb. The rice could use some work, though, as do most of the restaurants here in Santa Fe. My partner had menudo and she said it's one of the best she's tasted in Santa Fe. She grew up eating menudo so that's pretty meaningful. The sopapillas were fantastic too- perfectly fried and soft. We were seated quickly and almost immediately were asked for our drink order (yay! I've been driving since 8am. A drink sounded great). I asked the waitress if the margaritas were gluten free and she gave me an awful look, said I don't know, I don't drink. I asked if she would check with the bartender and she went away. Apparently she handed us off to another waitress who asked if we were ready to order. When I said "not yet for food" she hurried off without a chance for me to ask her about a drink. When she finally returned, I asked her the same question and she also couldn't answer. No one could tell me what was in their drinks, so I had to stick with water. :( She came back shortly to take our food order and was generally short and rushed. When I tried to ask questions (Im intolerant to both gluten & dairy) my options were limited so I ordered chicken tacos. Our entire order came out in less than 5 minutes. My daughters sausage patty (Bart for dinner) was overlooked to hockey puck status. My son loved his smiley face pancake. My husband enjoyed his stuff soppapilla. My 3 tacos were ok but very plain since I couldn't have the dairy toppings. The chicken ended up being very dry. She was back out quickly with our check. I truly felt rushed the whole time like they wanted our table for someone else. I saw them rushing other guests the same way. Some may appreciate the speedy service but I really don't like being rushed during my meal and the food came out too fast to have been cooked fresh. In every new place it's important to identify a good Mex takeout place near our home. Last night we decided it was time to embark on our journey so I picked up two items from here: Quesadilla- $8 Tamale Plate $8.50 - Pork tamales with green chile. When I called I explained that I wanted something that wouldn't be soggy by the time I got it home and they kindly offered to put the sauces on the side. I also explained that I don't eat meat and they suggested the quesa. (OH NO, I thought, cheese is always the suggestion when I say I'm veg. ) Happy to report that they know what they're doing with their quesas! The quesadilla was AWESOME- real government cheese, mildly spicy roasted chiles (the kind that creep up on you) and lots of sour cream, tomatoes, and guac. Total bargain for $8. Hubby reports that his tamales were very tasty, spiced just right, and filling with sides of pinto beans and rice. I asked if he'd go back and he said YES definitely, especially if they make good Margs. When I went to pick up our food I was pleasantly surprised at how cosy the inside of this unassuming restaurant was and look forward to dining here soon. I tried this restaurant out with my husband because we were told that had really good food. I have no problem with this food, it was the service. Our waitress took our order rushed us through our order. And then never delivered all of our food to us. And then never came back to ask us how anything was or even give us refills. Another young lady gave us refills and also packaged up a piece of cake for us to go because our waitress never ever came back. I understand people have bad days so I still give them four stars due to the fact that their food was very good. read more

We went to Los amigos on a recommendation for breakfast. We will not return. I'm not a coffee drinker but others in our party were, it was unfit to drink, all had to use more sugar and milk to mask the taste. I tried the corned beef and eggs, absolutely no flavor, the meat, the eggs, the potatoes, even the onions lacked any flavor what so ever, and don't like onions for breakfast. My wife tried the huevos rancheros, I didn't try it but I did try the chilie, I could taste the oven roasted of the chilie, but not much more then that, the chilie was brown and tasted of too much flour. The waitress's were polite, they smiled and nodded, but you could see they didn't have a clue what was being said. Fortunately, my brother's Spanish was a h--ll of a lot better then thier English. From the parking lot, there were 3-doors. The first was an obvious non-entrance with boxes piled by the door, the second was not so easy to tell and since it was locked, I kept trying. On the third try, I finally got in. Nice comfortable restaurant, though not fancy (vinyl table clothes and banquet stacking chairs). Tastefully decorated and friendly and attentive service. Big food and good prices. I got the veggie sausage burrito and it was good and filling! Will surely go again. read more

Kind of disappointed after seeing it had a 4.4 star rating. The service was friendly and fast but the food... it tastes like canned red sauce smothered all over the enchiladas so that is all you tasted. The rice taste like the Rice A Roni boxed rice and I was looking g forward to NM margarita and they only have wine based. I don't think I will come back. Sorry but it's an honest opinion read more

Just no. The food is good. The white folding tables in the back are no bueno. The $5.50 kid meal is a complete joke. This was breakfast by the way. It was the French toast which consisted of two pinche small slices of cheapo bread and one sad piece of bacon. That was really sad. My kids needed another adult meal to feel satisfied. Coffee is not good. Please if you're going to serve breakfast, dish out some money for decent coffee please!!! Cut to...next time I will go to PC's, or flying tortilla. read more

Some other reviews and sources have listed los Amigos as a place with some spicy food. Neither the salsa, the green chile, or the green chile quesadilla had much heat to them at all. Tapatio flavored Doritos are packing more heat than these. With that said, the flavor balance is excellent. The green chile flavor was great, the guacamole was some of the best I've had, and the quesadilla was buttery deliciousness. Unfortunately though, the tipping point between 3 and 4 was charging me $1.60 for getting a side of jalapenos without giving me any warning. A buck-fifty to chop up a ten cent pepper? Thanks, guys. She says: Green chile was really something else -- highly recommended -- forget adding beans or beef to it; just enjoy it in its full rich, warm glory. The quesadilla tasted a little too buttery for my taste; not my favorite, and I don't recommend. Service was mixed. One of the servers was very attentive and kind; the other was also pretty nice but seemed to forget a couple of questions we asked -- and possibly our existence -- within a few minutes of our arrival. This is one of our go-to places for workday lunches. Anyplace 2 people can get a hearty meal, served fast, for around $20 total in Santa Fe is a victory in my book. I smile every time I get the check. We've been eating there since it was Castro's, and when it became Los Amigos the quality improved drastically. Notable dishes: The Mexican Platter and the Fajitas. The tacos used to be greasy and awesome, but now they're not greasy, and mediocre. Sign of the times I guess. Don't take the 3-stars as a negative review. We had a late lunch here last week and enjoyed it very much. We both had the combination plate, me with green chile and my husband had the red. What I especially liked is that the chile is somehow cooked with the food or sauce as opposed to smothering and covering up the plate. Definite heat while eating but did not cause any "reminders" later. Very good salsa, and the staff kept it coming along with chips. Especially good guacamole. Attentive service. We have been trying new places looking for new favorite Mexican food restaurants, and we will come back to this one. read more

Ho hum, just another family friendly New Mexican restaurant with great food and great prices. One of the few places in town that offers a free basket of chips and salsa. The salsa was spicy, addictive and delicious. The patty melt was really, really good. Served with homemade onion rings, the perfectly cooked, tenderized patty was served on gorgeous marbled rye bread. Also the platter of sizzling fajitas is seriously impressive for $16. I love this place anytime but especially for breakfast. Their Buenos Dias is a perfect start to the day. The one egg is usually enough but some may be extra hungry that the two egg is the way to go. Couple it with a side of bacon and you're good to go. The dish consists of potatoes on the bottom covered with chile and cheese and then it is topped with the egg(s). The chile is sooo good! For other times of the day almost anything is good. A real treat is the Navajo Taco. It's pretty big but worth a try. If you're not in the mood for chile I have tried the patty melt and really enjoyed it. (Of course I had to have it with green chile one time and it was terrific.) Great friendly staff and just a chill, laid back place. The restaurant is neat and clean and just down home. I believe it is a sister restaurant to the Pantry so the feel is much like the Pantry. read more

The food is excellent and this is/was our favorite Mexican restaurant. Had a friend visiting from another state and of course, took them here. The service was awful. We waited forever to place our order. Then waited a long time to receive it. When we were through, no one brought our bill, even though they were standing talking. The service was very nice and friendly. The prices aren't bad but when the food is bad then the value doesn't mean anything. I'm surprised this place got so many good reviews. Unfortunately my food wasn't good. I've had better hospital food. It reminded me of school cafeteria food. First my very nice waitress brought me chips and salsa. The chips were generic bag chips that were a bit stale. The salsa had the texture of apple sauce and pretty boring. I had the tacos. Taco Bell tacos are better. The taco shells were prepackaged, generic, cheap and seemed stale to me. The chicken in the tacos tasted like canned chicken. The beans and rice were not good. Just don't understand why there aren't more reviews on the place. Food is great, and reasonably priced. We always have the burrito Christmas, either chicken or carne adovado. You can get two different sizes in the burrito, so if you aren't a big eater, try the smaller size. Great pinto beans and rice accompany the burrito. These are not refried beans, bur whole. You ask nice, they might put some of the red or green on the beans. The rice has a very good flavor, not too spicey, but compliments the burrito. Also get a sopapilla. These are the biggest I've seen, flaky, hot, tasty, and waiting for all the honey. You can get by here for under $10 person. They have a liquor license, so if you want a margarita, it's available. Nice small place, but ample seating, a small patio on the back, but it is right on Rodeo even though there is a fence. read more

The food is good but the nightly service is terrible. The owner needs to understand that the staff is rude to customers at night. The night manager is cold and aloof and doesn't seem to care about anything. If I were the owner, I would pay better attention to the service and the way customers are treated. I have to admit that I ate here once before and wasn't too impressed, but I was talked into going here again today and I'm now a fan. First off, Los Amigos has better service than when they first opened, so that is good. Second, they have free wireless, so I could connect to the internet after asking for the WiFi key. Third, the food serving I got was massive! I ordered the breakfast sandwich; eggs, potatoes, green chile, and bacon enfolded in a tortilla. I was expecting about half the food that I received, and it was impressive. I'm looking at the leftovers now. What a great deal! Another plus is that Los Amigos serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner at all hours of the day! I'm a huge breakfast fan, and I'm constantly griping when a local restaurant doesn't serve breakfast after 11:00... Since I rarely am awake before noon, this has caused problems with me in the past. I also like the daily specials that they had posted. I'm going to go back there often! read more
