I first wrote this review 9 years ago. For several years; this was my favorite Chinese restaurant. So much so that even after I moved over an hour away; I would always come here to eat a few times a year when I was in town as a special treat. The business doesn't have the same owners as before (might even be on their 3rd since?), so this is probably why there have been changes. One of the main reasons I liked this one is that they would make me fried rice without egg without a problem. The past few times; they gave me a hard time about this and were very reluctant. I understood why they couldn't give me a lunch special without egg because this would mean making a fresh batch for such a small portion. This could be costly for them, so I understand. I explained that I love their rice so much without egg and I come from so far away for it that I will gladly purchase a large portion. The gal seemed annoyed still, but agreed. She ended up bringing me back a lunch special with chow mein. I did not order this. Since they didn't want to make the rice without egg in a small portion; I ordered a large order of chicken and a large order of fried rice. I have no idea why she brought me a lunch special-- maybe because others at the table got them? She was apologetic about giving me a lunch portion, then brought me a small bowl of rice without egg to go with it. It had nothing in it and didn't taste anywhere near as good as the fried rice I'm accustomed to getting there. We had to go back and forth so much about getting fried rice without the egg that she forgot to ask me if I wanted veggie, pork, etc. in it and I forgot to offer this info. Anyway, the whole ordering experience was a cluster... even more than the time before. Which is why I'm updating my review. The food isn't quite as good as it used to be in my opinion as well aside from the rice. The egg rolls even came out burned this last time. Anyway, it is okay Chinese food, so you may like it, but sadly; I'm not going back ever again. :( read more

Years ago this place was really good. Tonight this place was a ghost town. No one was in the restaurant but us. Ordered a clay pot with tofu and seafood and meat. It was so salty; practically inedible. Thurs service was poor and the atmosphere was sad. Too cold, no decor to warm the white extra y'all walls. I wish it was as good as I remembered, sadly it definitely is not. Too bad. read more

Nice, big tasty portions. But service is lacking; took too long to get our food when the place was at half capacity, and when it made it out, the starter was cold. 3 minutes later, entrees came in. Really? Can't you wait a bit when you see we just started? Still, had some left overs to go which I guess serves as a consolation as you drive away. read more

I was excited to hear that a new Chinese place opened up. I've been looking for a good Chinese restaurant close to home that I could take my parents to when they visit. I had lunch here recently with some of my co-workers. We each ordered a lunch plate and shared everything so we could try different things. Lunch seems to get pretty busy here. Service is good. The manager stops by to make sure we're happy. Here's what we ordered: + Orange Chicken - Curry Chicken + Tofu with Veggies + Salt and Pepper Fish Fillet + Beef Noodle Soup The winners from this meal were the fish fillet and the orange chicken. Also, everyone agreed that the fried rice was amazing. The curry chicken was bland and boring. I'm still not won over though. This place is very Americanized Chinese food. read more

When I went here, I ordered ginger scallion beef, sweet and sour pork, spicy eggplant, and prawn and lobster sauce from DoorDash and the food was phenomenal. Their recipe is very healthy and when I got there the food was still hot. I'm also very excited that they start opening seven days a week starting on Memorial Day. read more

We were very pleasantly surprised with the authentic Chinese food found in Folsom (yes, Folsom). My family went there for dinner after purchasing a Groupon and we didn't have high expectations. We opened the menu and we happy to see that they didn't just have dishes like sweet and sour pork or broccoli beef. We ordered three dishes for the four of us (Chinese Beef Stew, Salted/Pepper Pork and Chicken and Gai Lon (Chinese Broccoli). Went in pretty full from a great lunch and didn't expect to eat much. The food was so good that I had seconds of everything. The three dishes plus rice (which they charge for) comfortably fed our family of four (includes two young men). It wasn't inexpensive, but well worth the money. Try it out!!!! read more

First time dining here. Hubs really wanted to try this place after reading a current Sac Bee review. So off we went for Friday night dinner. We ordered lettuce wraps (appetizer), steamed butterfish in black bean sauce ( Chef Special), and Cantonese sausage with mixed vegetables (Chef special). The minced chicken, for the lettuce wraps, had too much Chinese parsley in it that overpowered the entire dish. I wanted steamed fish but the only fish that had steamed on the menu was the butterfish. I didn't know what a butterfish was and had to google it. I ordered the steamed butterfish in black bean sauce, it cost $18. The fish was presented beautifully with the head and all. But ...the butterfish was thin, lacking meat, and very bony. :( It took some effort to eat. Hubs also ordered a Coke a Cola, he was served a cup of ice and a can if soda. It cost $1.50. So no free soda refills. The staff was sooo attentive. Sweet gracious folks. The food came out hot and timely. Another bonus is that the takeout containers are paper based, that's a big plus over styrofoam. If I'm in the area, I would eat here again but would order different items. read more

If you're a fan of the Chinese cuisine, then most of you have a baseline in which you judge Chinese food by depending on your previous experiences. For me, there's one or two dishes that help me judge the quality of a Chinese food restaurant and the staff here at Lotus 8 never fail to impress. Let's check it out. The Place (4 out of 5) - Situated minutes away from the infamous Folsom Dam and just down the street from the Folsom Outlets, Lotus 8 is situated in a quaint shopping center that is surrounded by local coffee shops, sandwich shops, and a few other miscellaneous establishments. If it's your first time visiting, the place can be easily missed; however, thankfully, it can't be confused with any other shopping area since it's the only one in that particular location. When you first look at Lotus 8, it seems like it could be a fairly small building. When you walk in, though, it's an entirely different story. There is PLENTY of space to accommodate all sorts of sizes of parties. In addition to that, there are a few parking spots outside that are specifically marked as being strictly for Lotus 8 customers. The place has high ceilings which make the space feel much bigger than it already is and it's incredibly clean. Perfect environment to be in when enjoying Chinese food. The Service (4.5 out of 5) - Everyone I've encountered here is very welcoming and friendly. Some people have this stigma of Chinese restaurants being incredibly harsh and mean-spirited; however, the staff here, which I think may also be the owners, are very easy to talk to and down to Earth. The multiple times I've been here, I've ordered something pretty specific and they made it a point to remember that and always have a smile on their face when they realize it's a regular that has come back. Pretty amazing feeling. In addition, it seems like the wait staff is fairly thin with the hostess often also serving as the waitress, and Back of the House often times taking care of hostess duties. While it may seem like it's a cluster, it's definitely a methodical chaos. I can only imagine that more staff is present during dinner service or busier days. All that said, no complaints about service whatsoever. It's always a joy walking in and ordering up some Chinese food from Lotus 8. The Food (4.5 out of 5) - Now comes the part that compelled me to write this review. Whenever visiting a Chinese restaurant, I always judge how good it is based on whether or not they can execute a simple dish while also making sure it tastes great....that dish is, Salt & Pepper Chicken. Most Chinese restaurants have Salt & Pepper staples that involve pork chops, prawns, or fish; however, the ability for a restaurant to cook Salt & Pepper Chicken means a lot to me. Lotus 8's Salt & Pepper Chicken is definitely legit and perfectly executed. The batter is perfectly fried, the taste is simple yet refined with the slight kick from the peppers and the bite of the saltiness throughout the tender pieces of chicken. The ratio of batter to chicken is exactly how it should be. In addition to Salt & Pepper Chicken, another dish I judge a Chinese restaurant by is their quality of their fried rice. Most people wouldn't think much of it, but the fried rice I order from Lotus 8 is special in that, I ask for extra egg, no veggies, and for them to add a Chinese delicacy that offers a savory component only found in Chinese/Asian dishes and that is...Chinese Sausage. The rice is always perfectly cooked; soft and well seasoned, the egg offering that additional balance and texture of a savory profile, and last but not least, the sweetness of the Chinese Sausage. There are no words to describe how it tastes, just that, if you've never had it before, give it a shot, you'll either like it or you won't. Overall (4.5 out of 5) - I'm usually a very critical person when it comes to choosing Chinese restaurants; however, Lotus 8 is one that I wouldn't mind coming back to again, and again, and again...which I kind of already have. For me, it's one of the best Chinese restaurants in the Foothills and is a place I try to make it a point to visit whenever I'm in the Folsom area. I love their string bean with chicken and steamed rice. It's perfect. Beans are done just right - not too crunchy raw, not too mushy. It feels fresh and well cooked at the same time. The chicken is soft and proper amount of moist with a mild appetizing flavor. The spiciness is good. Aroma from the rice is mouth watering. A hint of sweetness. But not too much. It's a perfectly balanced meal. Both taste-wise and nutrition-wise. Haven't tried other dishes yet. But i have a feeling those will taste great as well. Ambience is good. Serving time is fast. I have tried a few of the other standard dishes and they have been good also. Customer service is friendly but lags big time when a rush hits. We ordered for pick up nearly $60 worth of food that included 2 of the most expensive items on the menu. It was a big sloppy mess. And those came without rice. Idk if they are supposed to bc u would think they would or maybe ask us if we want to add it or maybe mention it on the menu. They put pork in a dish even though it's not on the menu. They just tossed a bunch of odds and ends in the pot which turned out to be the same meats they added to our other dish. I dont trust them with the quality either. This place used to be really good. Now it's really bad. I ordered the fried prawns, potstickers, and the teriaki chicken lunch item. All of it was worse than what you would get at the grocery store. All of the items tasted like they were made with the cheapest ingredients. The freshness was gone and there was hardly any flavor. The potstickers had a doughy texture and tasted like flour. The sauce that came with them tasted like artificial sweetener. The teriaki chicken was rubbery and didn't even taste like teriyaki. I threw it away. That's the truth. read more

This place for the most part is the typical Americanized Chinese food-joint. The only difference is that they have a good few dishes that aren't so Americanized and I was excited to see that at a place in Folsom. I ordered the beef stew soup noodles w/ egg noodles. I was worried at first as to what kind of "egg noodles" they were gonna give me. I have seen "egg noodles" in these type of places and they're the real Americanized type greasy noodles and I'm not a fan of that...but they gave me the ones I want, the HK style, nice, chewy and skinny noodle. I was happy about that. The beef stew meat (different than what Americans think of "beef stew" meat) was really flavorful and tender. I wish they used a different kind of veggie other than bok choy (choy sum or gai lan would be much better), but all in all, I thought the taste of the broth was decent. Service was really good. I had lunch by myself, yet they were still really attentive and opened the door for me when I left. Definitely gonna come back here whenever I'm in Folsom. Unfortunately, greed seems to have prompted this restaurant to accept far more orders than it can feasibly fulfill. I placed an order for my girlfriend, an ER nurse who has been working massive amounts of overtime, and for my brother. The order was placed at 5:30PM with an estimated 62 minutes until delivery. This is not only the best Chinese food in the Sac region in my opinion, it is probably the best Chinese food I have ever had in my 52 years. I gladly make the drive from Sacramento to Folsom to pick up dinner to go from this restaurant on a regular basis. My wife and I are big fans of the mushroom chicken, honey shrimp with walnuts, and the sweet-and-sour chicken. The quality and flavor is consistently good. Nice people, too. read more

A lot of people had said good things about Lotus8 restaurant, so we went there a few months ago, the food was good and there was a very nice lady serving us. We decided to go back today. They have hired a new employee who looked very familiar. I thought that is the person serving us before. However, I soon learned she is very rude and disrespectful and she does NOT like kids at all. My wife asked her twice for a high chair she ignored her and when I asked she said its on the corner you go and get it. I ordered an eggplant clay pot that we had before at this place, she brought me a different food with eggplant in it. There was whole bunch of eggplants swimming in water with fish and the food was served on a plate not a clay pot (as it was the last time). We asked her nicely that this is not the food that we ordered, our food was suppose to be in a clay pot with beef a red sause. She stared yelling at us and insisting that this is the only option you have! I toled her a few times we wanted with beef and not fish, in a clay pot. I asked for a manager, who never came to our table. The rude servant called me a liar and took the food away with attitude which almost spilled. There was no I am sorry, or let me fix the food, nothing. When we walked out we remembered why the waitress looked familiar, she got fired from her last job in another restaurant in Folsom at E Natoma St called Sunny Garden, because of her unprofessional attitude and her customer service was really bad, so Sunny Garden lost lots of their customers because of her. First time trying this place and I have to say it was a huge disappointment. The 8 Piece Cream Cheese Wonton were burnt. Oddly they are truly cream cheese only. I can't be upset about that part as that is what is advertised. The fact that four out of the 8 are severely burnt was not acceptable. I also ordered the sizzling rice soup which was pretty good in spite of the over cooked seafood. I debated whether to do two stars or three. The food was terrible and ended up in the garbage. The War Won Ton soup had a terrible smell that made it not edible. It was also the most unappetizing soup we had ever seen. Our order of Foil Wrapped Chicken was substituted with Pot Stickers, which had we been asked I would have declined. They, too were not good. Happy they are open and do delivery during Covid but the food wasn't that great. I placed an order for a family of 5 and the food was actually delivered pretty fast, however the duck we ordered was 90% all fat and bone.. hardly any meat on it so we didn't even bother trying to eat it, the fried rice (the like only thing I like to eat) was forgotten and not delivered, the Chinese broccoli with Oyster sauce was missing the oyster sauce (and I even left a comment to add extra oyster sauce) and my milk tea had so much ice by the time it came it taste like water.. so we basically got to eat our house chow Meir noodles and potstickers (which aren't normal style potstickers, my kids liked them but I didn't) When I called to tell them they forgot my house fried rice the man on the phone didn't really understand me and just kept saying okay tell him next time, I guess so I could get it free next time.. no thanks. I hate to write a 3-stars review for a family business. But the issues with the takeout order really needs to be improved and hence the 3 stars, plus my takeout experience was off putting. I ordered the salt and pepper fish and they gave me a salt and pepper shrimp instead without even calling me to notify me the changes. I also ordered the fish and eggplant clay pot, but there was no eggplants in the dish at all. The braised vegetables tasted bland and it's more like a regular bland stir fried vegetables. I also ordered the mapo tofu with no pork but they made it with pork. I suggest everyone to double check their order whether it's from pick up or Door Dash delivery just to make sure you get the right food items you ordered. Because they don't call you and let you know if they are gonna replace your dish with something else and you may get overcharged. I would give 3 to 4 stars of their foods based on what you order. I can definitely taste the MSG, so if you are sensitive to MSG, then this place is not for you. read more
