We know a lotus is a beautiful pink flower, but what does the number 8 signify? It's not only a lucky number, but it's pronounced similar to the word "prosperity!" On Friday evening my boyfriend and I decided to have a date night in and order delivery through DoorDash. Our dinner was a bit delayed, but our Dasher mentioned it was a busy night and had other deliveries to do. I'll review our experience below. BBQ Bao~ It was a decent bao, the meat was flavorful and steamed bun was nice and soft. Curry Chicken~ I was meant to order this, no really, see my fortune cookie he-he! The curry was good and the chicken was nice and tender, next time I'm asking for some spice tho since it had no heat. Lamb with Green Onion~ My boyfriend said he loved it, he just wished it arrived hot. Steamed Rice~ The rice was nice and fluffy and made a nice compliment to our dishes! Apparently they changed owners a few years ago and since then, this place is just not the same. Food is not good at all -- it's one step above Panda Express, but nowhere close to being authentic. Food is bland. Service is just ok, but I can't comment too much on this since We bought the food to-go for a work potluck party - no one was impressed. Ordered through Door Dash. This place used to be soooo good. What happened? I place my order at 8:36pm. The deadline on DoorDash was 8:40pm. Maybe this is a reason my order seemed thrown together with end-of-day rice and bland, undercooked food? Not sure, but the restaurant doesn't close until 9pm. If I decide to give them another chance and order again (because it was so good the last time I had it), I will update my review. PROS: The food "looked" good. The portion was generous and I received a $5.00 discount from the restaurant. The tofu and bell peppers were good. CONS: The rice was hard and definitely not freshly cooked. The scallops and squid were rubbery and under cooked. The shrimp was way over cooked and tough. The curry sauce was lacking in flavor and tasted watered down. It was not spicy at all. The styrofoam containers don't work well with super saucy dishes. If you have a Dasher that carried the bag by the handle and not from the bottom, the containers tilt and you have sauce all over the bottom of the bag. read more

We occasionally order here for special occasions but this recent experience told us the food is not as good as before. The dishes are $15-18 each and portion size is a lot smaller. The beef chow fun with gravy had a good taste but hastily made as the noodles were not separately properly to coat with the gravy. The walnut shrimp was over breaded, not crispy, and all the walnuts were stuck together in a large clump. The pepper beef had burnt pieces in the sauce as off the wok was not cleaned properly between dishes. Either way do not get a sense that food quality is a priority. We also found a hair and a small piece of foil in the food. As much as it pains me to rate an Asian small business poorly- we will be trying a different restaurant in the future. read more

Ordered from here Saturday night and were so happy we did. We were starving so we ordered a bunch of appetizers-potstickers, egg rolls, and the cream cheese wontons. The potstickers were a little thick but the sauce was so good, and the meat was very flavorful with a nice hint of ginger. The egg rolls were crunchy and the cream cheese wontons were to die for (even after the time it took to get the order delivered). We ordered the house chow mein which had all the meats, kung pao chicken and orange chicken. The chow mein was a huge helping, with perfect flavor. The kung pao chicken could've been spicier but it was a lot of chicken, zucchini and bell peppers. The orange chicken was breaded perfectly with just the right amount of crunch. We had an early afternoon appointment nearby, so we decided to have lunch at Lotus 8. I really knew nothing about the place except that it was convenient. Decent lunch time crowd and I did notice a number of folks picking-up takeout orders. We were quickly seated, provided menus and our drink orders taken. Service was fantastic. Simple decor except for an elaborate chandelier in the middle of the ceiling. We wanted something relatively light so we opted for lettuce wraps and soup. As it turned out, the portions were so large ... that it was not a light meal at all. We started with Wor Wonton Soup - huge bowl. It included shrimp, pork, beef, vegetables and, of course, wonton. Very good broth. Overall, delicious. Then our second course arrived. Shrimp with Lettuce (stir-fried minced shrimp with water chestnuts) and Chicken with Lettuce (stir-fried minced chicken with water chestnuts). Both were a little bland in my opinion ....... Came in one After having an insanely stressful day. It was about 8:30 p.m., clearly very late to be whipping up any kind of dinner in my kitchen. The place was quiet there was only a couple of employees That were rolling silverware in dinner napkins. I was seated Immediately The waitress asked if I had allergies and Suggested that I have won ton soup to help open up my nasal passage. They brought it out promptly And included My drink order. We were impressed with most of the items we ordered. Consistent... Been here couple of times and the items below were equally good. Salty chicken wings: deep fried and salty and was possibly the best item. It was very quantity for 3 adults and a kid. Fried tofu with salt and pepper: very unique and cube shaped and crispy (really deep fried... but you can't tell the oil) Both the above items came with jalapeños which added a nice spice of you chose to eat them. String beans: assumed that this would be dry, but had bit of gravy. It was decent, my veggie friend really liked it. Salted fish fred rice with Minced chicken: this was the item I wanted to go there and wasn't disappointed (note that they do not use anchioves, just slightly thicker, bigger salty fish chunks than usual) Tofu fried rice: this was the only item that disappointed. This restaurant in it's hay day was being reviewed by the Sacramento Bee and was even recommended to people from China who are visiting California and looking for authentic Chinese. Those days are LONG long gone. This restaurant has had multiple ownership changes, staff changes and they used to have incredible cooks but everything has changed for the worst. I ordered a huge ensemble of food for my boyfriends birthday, which included house special chow mein, clay pot fish and eggplant, peking pork chops, Chinese sausage fried rice, lemongrass beef and cumin lamb. The eggplant and fish was a grey, sloppy mess and was unedible. We threw this away. The chow mein was a clump of unflavored noodles and had ZERO flavor. Plus, we asked for no bean sprouts and the dish was doused in bean sprouts. We also threw this away. They lowered the quality of the meat in general, and the peking pork chops are a different cut, different sauce, with a soggy batter. This was unfortunately the best dish we had, despite those changes. The lamb was bland and the beef dish was near bland, nothing compared to its former, caramelized and delicious glory. I highly regret ordering food here and I would only recommend this restaurant for people who don't care about the quality of real Chinese, and prefer little seasoning on their food. Well, there's a tale of two restaurants that I'd like to embark upon explaining - service and quality of the food. Let's start with the service - when my daughter and I walked into the quaint, nicely decorated Lotus 8, we were asked, "Take out or dine in?" Not a "hello" or a "welcome!" Once we said we would dine in, she said "sit over there" and pointed to a table with a chair pulled out, two paper placemats that weren't centered and had some obvious leftovers from the prior diner. So, we sat at a non-bused table for 5 minutes and they finally got the menus to us. The server came and as she was wiping down the table, she asked us how we were doing, I said "great" and I asked her - she said "Tired." I said, I'm sorry to hear that and she walked off. So, let's get to the food - I ordered Sesame Chicken and it literally was the best I've ever had - incredibly crunchy, bursting with flavor - so good. The fried rice was equally delicious - they nailed it. My daughter ordered egg drop soup and chicken chow mein, she also really liked it and the portions were huge. Overall, the service was terrible and they were not friendly - but if you are getting it to go, it would be 5 stars. read more

PRO'S: Ginger and scallion beef- Big tender pieces of beef with lots of ginger flavor Malaysia chow fun- The absolute winner! Curry sauce flavoring this chow fun noodle dish and the curry flavor was awesome! The char su pork was moist and thick Pork fried rice- has a lot of flavor for putting the saucy other dishes over the top and was a huge quantity! CON'S: Potstickers- were made with eggroll wrappers and not wonton wrappers so it was a little doughy Kung pao chicken-delicious sauce, lots of peppers and peanuts...the chicken was breast meat and had gotten tough...I'd still buy it again just for the flavor and tell them to put less chicken and more veggies. I've been on the hunt for a new favorite Chinese food restaurant and stumbled upon Lotus 8. I was thrilled reading the good reviews and excited to try it. I placed an order for pickup and ordered the following: X2 Sesame chicken combos: sesame chicken, rice, and chow main X1 Broccoli beef X1 Cream cheese wontons X 1 Egg flower soup I go in, pick up my order, and drive home. When I got home and opened up my order I'm stunned to see that the rice is missing from BOTH my sesame chicken combos. I go to take a bite of my cream cheese wontons and there is crab and scallions in it. Yuck! Not what I ordered. Luckily, I'm not allergic to crab. I call the restaurant explaining all this and get offered an a la carte rice if I drive back and pick it up. Unfortunately I live a bit far from the restaurant but I decide to go in and take my food back to ask if they'd make it. I arrive at the restaurant and ask them to please remake my food. The gentleman there said that he's "going to lose money" remaking my food. He remade the food. The sesame chicken was okay. Very sweet, kind of mushy. The rest was kind of bland. I found myself having to add seasoning to it to make it enjoyable. I bite into my "cream cheese wonton" and it's a wonton with mozzarella cheese in it. Now, it's a lot better, with small cuts of chicken, shrimp, mushrooms and squids. Tasted lot better. Fujian fried rice have sauce on top of it. They have good ones in Bay Area. When sent back they fried the original ones so they were salty mush inside a crispy fried outside. No sauce. Definitely wouldn't go back. Service was okay so they get 2 stars not one. read more

Saw and ad in the local paper that they are to open April 18, 2013. It said they are Asian food with a twist. Sounds good. I could not find a webpage. Went for lunch at noon and the place was full. We had to wait for a table and the hostess seemed scattered but sat us at the last empty table which was a round for 8. There were 4 servers running back and forth to the kitchen but they also seemed scattered. The menu has about 12-14 lunch items most for $8 and a few costing more than that. They boast a 4 course lunch but the bagged lettuce with very sparse dressing didn't really do it for us... and it wasted soooo much time for the servers to bring out. We did not get the dessert at the end because we couldn't wait any longer because the food took so long to receive. And I believe we were supposed to have an eggroll with the meal but did not get one... not positive about that though. And not sure how this was a four course meal...? My friend got her food about 8 minutes sooner than mine... always frustrating. I finally got mine and it was not exactly what I ordered but I ate it anyway and it was VERY GOOD. I had the Ma Po toful (see pic I posted on Yelp) which was supposed to also have pork but somehow they did not add the pork it was just tofu. But damn it was good. I would order it again even without the pork. I had it with fried rice and it was very fresh tasting and not greasy at all. My friend's meal was the chinese chicken salad... ummm same bagged lettuce with sparse amount of very good chicken, a slice of tomato and NO dressing so she had to ask for some. It also comes with either fried rice or chowmein. She got the chowmein and said it was really good but the salad was a waste. I am sure they are working the kinks out of a new restaurant and menu. Got delivery via Doordash. Review is of the food quality and style, not temp and presentation as this is impacted by the delivery service. I ordered potstickers appetizer and a dinner plate of cashew chicken, steamed rice, egg roll, and chow mein. The potstickers were made from a thick, heavy dough that was fried. It was more like a fried pork bun than a potsticker. The chow mein was fst noodles that were oily and not flavorful, likely due to just being tossed in sauce instead of cooked together. The cashew chicken has such large pieces of veggies in it (mushrooms, onions, squash) that they 1) were not fully cooked and 2) made it difficult to eat and get all the flavors of the chicken and cashews. Cashews were raw and not toasted for flavor or crunch. The chicken, dark meat bits, were overpowered by the large veggies. I love Chinese food that I can nosh on the next day. This one?
