So even though I had already had pizza two weekends in a row, I couldn't resist getting some Lou Malnati's during my recent visit to Arizona, or as my bf calls it, the "illuminati"... apparently a secret society of pizza!?! Third time I've been here. This place lacks serious service. The entire restaurant was being run by one waiter and an incompetent manager at lunch. Literally took 15 minutes for someone to approach my table to bring a menu and ask if I wanted something. On top of it, I guess I'm just not a fan of their pizza. I prefer New York style. My husband was craving Chicago deep dish pizza so we came with my in laws on Friday night to get some pizza. We had a reservation for 6:30 and were seated right away!! We ordered the malnati salad, calamari, and deep dish Chicago classic. The calamari was pretty good - nothing to write home about but was crisp! I was surprised at how much I liked the malnati salad. The crispy salami bits were delicious and added a crunchy salty bite that paired perfectly with the sweet and acidic vinaigrette. The Chicago classic deep dish was heavy - I could only eat one slice! We were going to come for happy hour at 5:30 however our plans changed so we showed up at 2:30 for a late lunch. We ordered the large Buffa-Lou wings, well done. It still seems really expensive $19.35 for 12 wings. They do give you a monster amount of sauce (2 ceramic containers with probably more than 4 ounces in each) of either ranch or Gorgonzola to go with it. Good thing we ordered them well done because they would've been flabby otherwise as they were really not as crispy as we had hoped. They did taste good. The place was pretty empty and they didn't have enough servers to clear off the tables so it was kind of gross sitting there with several uncleared tables near us. That's what happens between lunch and dinner so we probably can't really complain too much... it just gives you a weird feeling that's all. The place does have an odor that reminds me of restaurants that have carpeting. Not sure why since it doesn't have any carpeting in it. The ladies bathroom sink had two clogged drains and I let the server know so I'm sure they've cleaned it by now. I've been to this location twice. Both times the pizza was adequate, but seems the tiniest bit off from having back home. Can't put my finger in if it's the taste, thinner deep dish crust, but something's a little off. That said it's still a great Chicago deep dish. The service both times has always been top notch, with friendly and attentive bar staff. The restaurant overall is a very Arizona take as no Lou's back home resemble the AZ ambiance and overall feel. The Scottsdale location is very modern as compared to a more traditional vibe like the original Phoenix Lou's location in Camelback Center. The pizza at that location was also spot on as far as taste, crust, cheese, and ingredients. The drinks are a bit on the expensive side for domestic beer and Malört ($10). I ordered new years eve. I ordered at 4:30 and waited until 5:40 for my order. I spoke up multiple times about this. One of the kitchen managers said the pizza has been sitting since 4:56. I have been sitting in the lobby since 4:30 When I opened the pizza box it was a little burnt from sitting, hardly and sauce & cheese with hard crust. I ordered extra sauce & cheese. I was surprised to see that Lou Malnati's Pizzeria has under a 4.0 rating at this location in Scottsdale because it's a heavyweight pizza joint! I've traveled to Chicago quite a few times, and the city is known for it's deep dish Chicago-style pizza. Lou Malnati's is one of the top 3 pizza joints in Chi-town along with Pequad's and Giordano's. So I was so happy to see that they have a location here in town. I stopped by for takeout on a Sunday afternoon. Ambiance (4.5/5): This pizza joint is a spacious bar and restaurant. There are plenty of TVs so you can watch the game. It's clean. And comfortable. Even though I ordered takeout, I did get a nice view of Lou Malnati's while I was waiting for my food. Service (N/A): Since I placed my order online, and I just picked it up, service wasn't a big part of my experience. With that bing said, the members of the staff I ran into were friendly. The takeout area is separate from the main restaurant, so keep this in mind. I went to the wrong area at first. Lou Malnati's also offers frozen pizza if you'd like to put a couple of pies in your freezer. Drinks (N/A): I didn't order any beverages during my visit, but they do have a full bar. Quality delivery not an option. I like Lou's, but the quality has tappered off over the years. We usually do a pick up or dine in, tonight because of time: decided on delivery. They do not have dedicated drivers and use DoorDash. So while I have preferred status with DD due to my credit card, does not apply here. So $6 delivery fee + tip. The tip did not register online, so had to give the driver cash. In hindsight, should have been a $0 tip. The driver did not have an insulated bag, probable tilted the boxes as he was putting them into his filthy car. How did I know that? Well I came out to give him the $ tip and pizzas. See pics below. I'm less than 3 miles from the store. The order was picked up by the driver at 6:23 and delivered to my house after 7pm. The drive should have taken about 10-12 min at most. Not 40 minutes! I tried Lou Malnati's pizza for the first time last night and unfortunately I have to say I was not impressed. I stood at the front counter for 5 to 8 minutes before someone came up to take my order. I was less than impressed with the pizza selections but I ordered a thin crust pepperoni in a medium. Ever since going to college in the Cambridge area of Massachusetts and discovering Uno's back then I fell in love with the Chicago style deep dish pizza. Oh man, that steak and cheese pizza was amazing... Uno's might still be around but the pizzas I have fond memories of have long since gone. Being in Arizona and having dinner at The Americano right next door to this place a friend of mine said we should just detour from the group to head here instead. Well, we didn't do it that night, but a couple of days later I ordered a pizza from here for takeout. My choice was the Deep Dish Malnati Chicago Classic with pepperoni added. It was ready pretty much exactly on time and the only mistake I made getting it home was putting it in the passenger seat. That ever so slight tilt did slide the topping a little but thankfully not enough to destroy it! The pizza was very good. Good enough to bring back some of those memories of what I loved about the Chicago style deep dish of years ago. I would have never paid attention to this place being here if it wasn't for that off-hand comment from a friend as we went to dinner. I need to thank him for that! Have ordered delivery twice in the last 2 months and was an absolute mess. First round, the order never came and we had to drive to store to get our pizza. Tried again last night and the order was picked up, but the driver had other stops so it sat in his car for 1 hour before it got to us. Pizza was soggy and toppings moved around. Nice to have a Chicago staple like Lou Malnati's in the area. During my experiences dining here, the location has been kept clean and orderly, and the staff have been friendly and helpful. Whether dining on my own or in a larger group, they're always happy to accommodate and provide excellence service. I gave a 4 star instead of 5 because the food hasn't been very consistent. Though it tastes just like it does when I dine at the locations in Chicago, I've gotten pizza that has been cold in the center on more than one occasion. Lou Malnati's is a great pizza and I've been going there for more years then I can remember. I actually started going to Lou's back where I grew up in Chicago. When Lou's opened there first place here in Arizona, I was thrilled. Unfortunately as many restaurants have had to do, prices have increased and I do understand that although Lou's has gone over the top with their pricing to the point of nowhere near close to "value for the buck". Let's face it, pizza is one of those few items that was affordable in taking your family of 4 or more out to dinner. This is no longer the case eating at Lou's. I have since in the Phoenix area found Chicago style pizza as good for a much more reasonable price. If they ever figure it out and adjust the menu pricing that suggests better value in being competitive, I'll go back. My wife and I have been to Malnati's many times over several years at various locations. We had dinner this evening at Malnati's in Scottsdale and were very very disappointed. The butter crust was very thin and extremely hard. The cheese and sauce was very limited. It's the worst Malnati's pizza we have ever had.
