Risky Bizness Sandwich was the best sandwich I had there. Meaty with the pastrami , sour punches with the pepperoncinis, savory with the avocado. The Dutch Crunch was a great bread but i thought there was going to be more "crutch" The Cesar salad was a bit sub par compared to the sandwich. Nothing special. Solid sandwiches and salads. Highly recommend the tuna melt on Dutch crunch. Their salads are also good too, so don't forget those. I usually get the Greek or Caesar with chicken. However, I think this location is in desperate need of a renovation. It is very hot inside the store, which makes the time waiting for a sandwich uncomfortable. A 10-minute wait feels like 30. It's also hard to communicate your order with the fan going and the constant telephone ringing. I'm happy they're busy, but I'm hot and I just want to get out of there with my sandwich. For that reason, I will only go here before or after the lunch rush. Or I'll just go to the Taraval location instead. That location has none of these issues. It's also pretty clear there is not enough room for the staff to properly crank out the overwhelming number of orders this location receives. I wouldn't even bother keeping the dine-in space at this point. I beg you, Mr. Lou, please expand the food prep area, hire more staff, and provide seats outside for waiting. Ps. Avoid the coffee. Lou's is home to my favorite lunch sandwiches. I've tried the Hot Pastrami, Crab Melt and Risky Business and they are all amazing on a Dutch crunch roll. My favorite is the Crab Melt. LOVE THEIR SANDWICHES. If you haven't heard of this place or planning on eating here, DO IT! This place is a pretty well known sandwich shop in the neighborhood by the locals. You will always almost see this place with people because it's that good! The place is tiny and cozy but they have everything you need when it comes to pairing things with sandwiches. Chips? Beverages? Tea? Soda? Anyways, they got so much sandwich options you definitely just have to try each and everything so you can find your favorite (I got two or three). Now, you may be wondering, why the 4 stars though? We'll, here's the thing, their customer service kind of is meh. Like "meh" and not "horrible" because I'm a regular and I always order so I know what to expect/ I can tolerate. If you're getting stuff here for the first time, just expect to receive a not so good customer service whether you're ordering through a phone or in person. There's always a little bit of language barrier, I think, that plays into part of this as well so just be patient and try to help them help you. My suggestion, order ahead and go pick it up. Go straight inside (even when there's a line) and excuse yourself from the person in the front of the line and tel the cashier, you're picking up your order, grab whatever you want to add and then thank them and leave. Simple. No need to chit chat as they won't do that and don't even try asking for suggestions and/or "what their favorite stuff" is because trust me, they'll just look at you LOL. I know they should prioritize customer service but they are a small pop and shop spot trying to get by as much customers as possible (and with the line they always get? Yikes) with so little staff, so best with them and understand them as much as possible. The only thing I miss about working in the financial district was the Ami-cado sandwich at Lou's. I stopped by their Richmond location for the first time and was thrilled that the quality and prices are exactly the same. I really don't think you can go wrong with any sandwich here, and if you are picky they have a build your own sandwich option. To me what makes Lou's unique is the jalapeño spread, which I always add extra of to all my sandwiches. It adds a bit of heat, but so much great flavor that balances some of the heavier meats like pastrami. Order ahead via phone or online for quick smooth pick up if you can, otherwise it can be a pretty long wait depending on how busy it is, but it is so worth it. read more

I still remember my first visits to Lou's many years ago. The prices were good, but it was really the portions and quality of the sandwiches that stood out and made me say "wow." My recent visit also made me say "wow," but for the wrong reason. I ordered a breakfast sandwich with ham and bacon and was disappointed to find just one paper thin slice of each meat. I could barely taste the flavor from the meat! I understand that inflation has driven prices up, but reducing the portion of meat to this extent significantly alters the sandwich's flavor profile. How much more would it cost to add an extra slice of ham? Sadly, I won't be coming back. For a sandwich that's severely lacking in flavor, it's simply not worth the price you're paying. read more

I came here after a failed run through Golden Gate Park. This was a great lunch option in the area. I had seen this place mentioned before but had never gone out of my way to try it. I'll be the first to admit that I usually think of sandwiches as being a pretty mediocre class of food. I almost never find myself craving one but i'm so glad I came to Lou's. It's one of the few standout sandwiches in my life. I built my own sandwich on dutch crunch with chicken breast and roast beef with the special Lou's sauce. I also got mine toasted. The bread is everything a dutch crunch roll should aspire to be. It was perfectly crisped and crunchy. I'm also happy with the price point compared to some of the other more expensive sandwich places in the city like Deli Board. Overall this might be my favorite sandwich in the city. read more

Nothing beats a good, hearty sandwich, and Lou's Ami-Cado Sandwich is one of the best I have ever had!! First of all, great sandwich for the price and the ingredients that are packed into it. Love each part of the sandwich and it was so well-executed, like the bread (the sweet roll) was seriously delicious. There was a bit of a line when we got there, which was expected. The wait is going to be longer than your typical sandwich shop but it is well worth it. They are pretty strict about how many people are in their shop at once (rightfully so), but the ordering process was pretty streamlined overall. I've also tried their Ami Cado, but it has a bit too much pastrami for my liking. They also have a lot of other various sandwiches. I've been by twice and pleased both times The price point is reasonable $10 for a nicely sized sandwich, you could totally eat half for lunch and save the rest for later. Add chips and drink you'll spend about $15. Not wallet friendly for daily eating but neither is bread for the belly on a daily basis. First visit - I got the Italian no changes. Ordering sandwiches were easy on a Friday afternoon around 2pm. We were starving and craving a good sandwich spot. We called in and the sandwiches were ready in 15 mins. It's a pretty small spot and they don't have any seats inside or outside -- totally fine for us since we were headed home to inhale the sandwiches anyway. There was plexiglass surrounding the cashier area and payment was easy to do with Apple Pay; so all good in that department. There's also an assortment of chips and drinks that you can choose from before paying. You have to pick up your own bag of chips, though. So if you're the type to do the little "indecisive dance" where you grab the Kettle BBQ, then the salt and vinegar, then put it back, then get the cheddar, then put it back... everyone can see you. My husband got the Risky Business and I got the Hot Pastrami. We both really enjoyed the sammies. It wasn't as large of a sandwich as I thought it was going to be (a good thing). It definitely wasn't one of those sandos where you have to hard press the sandwich to the table just to get a good bite in. It was very filling though! I hate half of the Hot Pastrami, a bag of chips, and a coconut water -- I was good! I totally would come back to try the Lou's Special Sauce. Why didn't I do more research on Yelp before ordering?! If you want a yummy and big sandwich that is consistently ready in 15 minutes during the peak time with very kind staff that gives you warm interaction, go to Yellow Submarine on Irving. At Lou's Cafe, the service was the absolute worst. Ended up waiting for 50 minutes while the estimated pick up time on an app kept on updating 10 more minutes then another 10 minutes then another. Very rude staff literally walking away as I asked for an updated wait time after 30 minutes and yelled at me with really angry face every time I tried to get her attention. Another staff later told us, looking annoyed, "well you guys came at the peak time" when we complained about it after finally getting the sandwiches - she was bossed around by the woman behind the cashier who kept on yelling at me so maybe she was scared of admitting the fault. No acknowledgment or apology about the wait time. We thought that DoorDash messed up the estimated time but they told us that the store updates the pick up time if there's a delay. The store recorded to DoorDash that they gave us the food only after 15 minutes wait, which is a lie. A whole bunch of customers who came after us picked up their sandwiches before us, so being busy during the peak hour is not even a valid reason why it took so long. My guess is that they missed our order but blamed it on the peak time busyness. We will not go back to Lou's cafe and stick to Yellow Submarine. read more

Whoever answers the phone needs honestly should try out a different responsibility because manning the phone is not her strong suit. Sat on the phone with her for almost 5 minutes while she was talking to another customer in the store. Then when she finally could speak with me she was incoherent. The upside was that she got the order right and it was ready when I got there. Lou's sandwiches are a decent size and the flavors are decent as well. The establishment has street parking out front that wasn't hard to find. The interior was clean-ish but the outside is kinda off putting. Overall more like a 3.7 star rating for me read more

Haven't been to SF proper in awhile, but we came today to take the daughter to the park. This was somewhat close by and we decided to give it a shot. It's pretty good when it comes to sandwiches, but there is a long wait, and in the end the question is if it's worth the wait. I would say yes and no. The sandwiches are good without a doubt, but it would say it's a tiny notch down below Ike's and Ike's never has a wait this long. At the end of the day it's worth it if you can wait and believe this to be the best sandwich spot or if you live close by. I would recommend calling ahead and ordering but expect that the phone line might be busy or they won't be able to answer because of how many people they get a day in person. Sometimes I get forgotten over the phone or hung up on, but that's okay I usually call back and they answer. The place is quite small and can get quite cramped.
