Cheesy jalapeño grits with bacon and an over easy egg
Sarah M.

Stopped in here for brunch this past Sunday with my husband because we had been wanting to try it out for a while and had mixed feelings. We were greeted right away and looked over the menu a bit before ordering. My husband ordered the country breakfast with chicken (definitely the way to go) and I ordered the cheesy jalapeño grits with bacon. We each got a cup for water and I ordered a coffee, excited because I saw ahead of going that it was self-serve (like at Cafe Patachou where I can get as many coffees as I like without having to wait for our server to come check on us first). However, the self serve coffee excitement was short-lived after seeing that they only offered half and half as creamer (I'm lactose intolerant) and the two coffee carafes were not labeled for what was inside (decaf? medium roast? you'll never know!) and then one was completely empty and never refilled during our visit. The water station also was not ever refilled during our visit, so we were not able to get refills after filling up our cups the first time. It took a couple of tries to find a table we could sit at because you seat yourself, but several had not been cleaned after other guests left and had food and drinks spilled on them. There were definitely enough staff members there to be able to clean them in between customers, so we weren't sure why they were left that way. We ended up sitting in the middle of the room towards the front, across from the clown art wall, which made for interesting conversation as we looked through everything. When the food came out I was impressed with the portions, but I had no flavor whatsoever to my cheesy jalepeno grits. The egg and bacon were good, but not enough to make it a good dish and I would not order it again. And I love savory breakfast and grits in general, so it was a real bummer. My husband's dish was worth the visit though. It was a huge portion size and we honestly would just split it if we came back and ordered it. It was so savory, seasoned perfectly, and juicy. One of the best breakfast dishes I have tried recently! I really debated between 3-4 stars for this, but my dish was a flop, the lack of cleanliness for the seating area, the lackluster self-serve coffee station, and not refilling the beverages ultimately scored a 3 star review for me. I would come back and try something else though, or split the country chicken breakfast because it was really good. Hopefully next time the beverages won't be empty!

Country breakfast

Im 55. I really shouldnt be eating this kind of food anymore but every now and then you have to treat yourself and be naughty. This is a good spot to do that. I got the country breakfast which was fried chicken and gravy with biscuit and eggs. Heavy. Rich. Delicious on a cold winter day. Wouldnt recommend when its 90 degrees out in Summer =) Self serve drip coffee means you never run dry. People are nice and friendly. Its a hip little spot near the top end of Mass Ave. I probably wont be a regular for health reasons but I liked it !

Biscuits and sausage gravy needed

Love handle is delish! Service is fast casual - order at the counter then find a seat. There are standard offerings as well as some great specials. The biscuits and sausage gravy needed more sausage, but everything else exceeded expectations. This may be my current favorite chicken sandwich in the city! The chicken was perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside with a spicy mayo, cheese, and pickled jalepenos. Can't wait to come back and try the dinner menu!

We weren't greeted when we walked in but was greeted when placing our order. With it being my first time here, I was somewhat confused. The menu is on the wall. You place your order at the counter then they will bring out your food once you find a table. The potatoes weren't really good. The food was hot and it didn't take too long to cook. There was an old western movie playing on the projector.

This is such a cute place. Very nostalgic. There are tons of pictures on the wall along with VHS tapes that gave a cool feel. This is located right on Mass Ave so parking can be tricky. There is street parking and there is a garage about a block away. When you walk in, to order you have to go to the front register. The menu is on the wall to the left and it changes weekly, from my understanding. Coffee and water is self serve but they have other drinks in a fridge. I got the spicy chicken sandwich and it was sooo delicious. The chicken piece was huge and i love the jalapenos and spicy sauce. The fries were perfectly crispy, yet soft. All condiments are at the tables and you get a number once you place your order and they will bring it to you. Tables are first come, first serve. The portions are extremely plentiful and I will be back for more.

Cozy breakfast/brunch spot located in the Mass Ave area of Indianapolis (near or technically in the downtown area?). The service style here is fast casual where you order at the counter and they bring you your order when it's ready. The menu has a pretty good variety and seems to focus on comfort foods. I'm a tourist, but I don't think I would be wrong if I said that the focus is Midwest comfort classics. I ordered the biscuits and gravy with coffee. I love that you get to pick your mug that they have sitting next to the counter to fill your coffee with. The biscuits and gravy were decadent and delicious. Eating here reminds me of having breakfast at one of my best friend's house back in high school. I mean his house was decorated very similarly. And his mom would make us waffle. I'm a big fan of this place, especially since it won't break the bank and you're in and out pretty quickly all the while getting delicious food.

Waffle, Egg, and Brisket with self-serve Tinker coffee

Elevated brunch food combined with a basic greasy spoon diner. I wasn't quite sure what to make of this place at first. You order at the register, there's a big old-school menu board on the wall awkwardly off to the side, you can't get your eggs poached, and the only coffee available is self-serve drip coffee. But don't let that basic diner vibe fool you. The decor is kitschy vintage thrift store. The food is definitely better than what you get at a basic diner. I had the waffle, eggs, and brisket. The scrambled eggs were okay, the waffle was good, and the slices of brisket were superb. (And this is coming from a Texan who loves his brisket.) The coffee is from local roaster, Tinker Coffee. Overall, I recommend this place and would eat here again.

Great little brunch spot with mimosa and movies on Saturday mornings. Revisited for Mother's Day and they expanded their hours and menu! They have an evening menu on Friday & Saturday that includes some interesting selections like Poutine. They still play old classic movies like "Mrs. Doubtfire". They have expanded their selection of beverages. I can't wait to try them again in the evenings.

Country breakfast with chicken enough

This is a great breakfast/brunch spot on Mass Ave! It has been around for a while but I just got around to trying it, and regret not going sooner! Went for a breakfast and could not recommend the country breakfast with chicken enough! Excited to go back to this laid back spot to have some more of the menu!

Came here on a Sunday morning and they seemed like they were still recovering from the Saturday rush after pride. We just ordered the pork belly breakfast sandwich and side of fries. We sat there as others got their order. It's a place where you order first then sit and they bring it to you. The people next to us came after us and got their food. After around 26 mins from ordering we went to ask and they seemed to have just forgotten about us. Once they realized they were very nice and apologized for the delay our food came out immediately after, and it tasted really good! A few bites into the fries and I found a hair. I went up and they offered to remake it but I just wanted to leave at this point. They were very friendly and the ambulance is modern with a little hipster. I think they deserve a second chance but just a really bad first experience, they refunded partially which I appreciated!

Waffle, meat, & egg (fried chicken)

Came in for a Saturday brunch with a couple of friends. When we arrived at 10am, there were only two other tables taken, but the place quickly filled up. When you first walk in, it is a little hard to find the menu, as it's hidden behind a drink cooler. I ordered the Waffle, Meat, and Egg, with fried chicken for my meat, and a coffee. The coffee bar is self serve, with refills on the actual coffee at the counter. On the coffee bar, there is also self serve water. The food came out rather quickly. The waffle and egg were what you would expect. The fried chicken was the stand out with a great crispy flavor. I thought the menu said this was served with hot honey, but I got like a chili butter sauce? I don't know, it was just okay and I opted for syrup.

Straight from my picky husband's mouth "one of the best breakfast spots I've tried in Indy." We loved this place. I love the funky food combinations that you don't typically get elsewhere and the constant rotating menu. This had been on my "to try" list forever and I'm so happy I finally had the opportunity to go. You order at the counter and they bring your food to your table, service was pretty fast. Such a cute spot, warm, cozy, nostalgic, and so much to look at.

Singular lump of overcooked "scrambled" egg.

This place has a fun kitschy "crappy diner" vibe and we've wanted to check it out for a while now. We were so disappointed. Scrambled eggs were cooked on a used pan (assuming due to black bits throughout), overdone, and not even scrambled. "Toast" was cooked on one side only. Waffle was served with pepper jelly (?!) in the butter- bizarre and not advertised. Either this was an off day or they really lean into the crappy diner thing. None of this would have been quite so irritating if we hadn't been charged nearly $80 for three shitty meals. For $80, we'd rather go somewhere nice.

Blonde-ish hair in my food (mine is bright red, so not mine) and beyond well done fries. Not for me.

Hours posted online are rarely followed. Shame because I love the food but it is inconvenient for customers traveling for a comfort food.

The sandwich is about as long as my humerus, and I ate the whole dang thing in one sitting. New York Gourmet Deli is not to be confused with NY Gourmet Deli, also in Indy. New York Gourmet Deli is located on East 21st Street on the near east side; NY Gourmet Deli is on Ruckle Street, near The Children's Museum. Are they owned by the same people? I don't know, but someone needs to change their name so I'm less confused. Anyway, New York Gourmet Deli, on the east side, is great and located in an unassuming parking lot full of potholes. It looks like a liquor store from the outside, but step inside and you'll see the large deli counter where you order sandwiches, burgers, fries and other foods. The joint is also a convenience store, of sorts, with a wall full of refrigerated beverages, aisles of chips, candy, and lots of Mexican snacks. There's also a little corner of the store with goods like laundry detergent and other necessities. The hustle here is unmatched. The fellows behind the counter were flying all over the kitchen to fulfill the orders. I visited around noon on a weekday, which seemed to be a busy time because there were lots of people from all walks of life here, either waiting to order or waiting for their orders. The guys behind the counter were unflappable and took orders and made sandwiches at a speedy pace. Even if there's a line, you won't wait long for your food.

Service was very good with only a slight wait due to a small line. You order, they start making your order and you pay. A few minutes later the have everything ready and bagged up. I got a chopped cheese, it does reminded me of a sloppy Joe, and my only complaint was I wanted more lettuce and tomato. Richelle got the east coast roast beef and cheddar. She loved it and it had plenty of lettuce and tomato. Fries are good, and the give them a sprinkle of seasoning too. Plenty of cans of pop to choose, but would like to see a few diet pop options added. We will definitely come back, and I ask for plenty of toppings.

I've struggled with how to rate and review Goose the Market for a long time…read more I've struggled mightily. It's an Indianapolis icon in many ways. It's beloved. And listen, it's not the most wheelchair friendly place in the world. If you're a wheelchair user, you're in all likelihood not going to the cellar unless you're extraordinary with you're chair or you crawl. I remember attending a Yelp event here, and I just wrestled with these issues so much. It's not inaccessible - you can get in the door, though even the parking is a bit wonky and the curb-cuts a bit worn. This is an older building in an older neighborhood. So yeah, if you're a wheelchair user plan ahead. I am a wheelchair user. And I suppose I should knock off my usual 1-star for accessibility issues. But, I just can't do it. I, instead, choose to go 5-stars with my narrative disclaimer that there are accessibility issues here. But, my word. This is a great place and every single experience I've had with Goose the Market, including last night's Italian Film Festival, has been stellar whether I'm in their location or at an event they are catering. What is Goose the Market? First off, nearly everyone considers it one of the best - Indianapolis Monthly, Eater, Yelp, etc. Goose the Market offers a daily menu of sandwiches, soups, gelato, and small plates. It offers raw beef, pork, poultry, game, seafood, in-house made sausage/smoked meats, and more. It offers charcuterie - both in-house and from other producers. It offers farmstead cheeses, fresh produce, artisan breads, preserves, sauces, pickles, pasta, crackers, flours/grains, and a lot more. There's the cellar - Enoteca bar with Italian style wine by the glass and small plates (and it has all-ages seating). Goose the Market offers a wine of the month club, gift cards, catering, classes, daily specials, and more. What can I say? There are those places that are worth the effort. As a lifelong person with a disability, I long ago realized the world would never be perfectly accessible. It's never going to happen. I'll continue to work toward a more accessible world, though I'll also honor that there are those places where I feel welcome anyway. I feel welcome at Goose the Market, though I can't quite get the full experience. The service is exceptional, the products quite awesome, the environment warm and friendly, and there's simply no doubt it's one of Indy's treasures. So yeah, five stars. With a disclaimer that those with mobility impairments may need to plan ahead or have a companion along. Who wants to be my companion?

Bacon making class: overall I am glad I did the class, but think there are some things that could change. The information provided at the beginning of the class didn't flow the best, and used a lot of terms I didn't understand- knowing your audience is important. We were told we would get 1.5lbs bacon, and .5lbs bacon bits. When picking up the bacon, we only got the bacon, and none of the bits. This needs to be updated on the class description. Sandwiches: we tried a goose, and a batalli. The goose was good- nothing spectacular. I was a fan of the batalli- nice amount of mayo, appropriate spice, and good amount of meat/cheese. Would definitely get the batalli next time. Overall, I enjoy the sandwiches, think the sandwich class could be improved.
