The 3 stars are for the food not for the service. This location is undergoing a remodel and when we first pulled up we thought the building had been partially destroyed by inclement weather but we knew they were open for business because the parking lot was full. They have a sign in the entryway explaining the remodeling project. Well on to the experience. Luby's is a cafeteria style restaurant with a huge dining area with several TV's along one wall. They have booths and tables. The customer service from the line servers and cashier was really good. They were friendly and smiling. The food was really good too. Me and my daughter both selected the Cheesesteak. It has bacon on top and it's wonderful. My daughter selected cabbage and fried okra for her sides and she really liked it for sure because she cleaned her plate. For my sides I selected sweet potatoes and spinach. The sweet potatoes have marshmallow creme and pecans and it tasted really good. The spinach wasn't really seasoned but I still enjoyed it. My daughter had water to drink and I had iced tea. No one ever came by our table even once to offer a refill on our drinks. Since I was full I wanted to take the rest of my meal to go. We waited and waited and I made a point of looking directly at a server who walked by with a water pitcher. She ignored me. While my daughter was in the restroom I decided I would just go grab a to go container since our table was receiving absolutely no attention anyway. As I was walking back to our table, Ed ( I read his name tag) came and tossed a napkin into my plate right on top of my food. When I approached I said, excuse me, no one ever came by our table so I went to get a to go box because I wanted that. He immediately started arguing with me that I shouldn't have left the table. He argued further to tell me that he had been by the table twice. He hadn't. My daughter walked up to hear Ed basically yelling at me. We were both stunned and so was the couple at the very next table who was watching and listening. My daughter went to talk to Leo (read his name tag too) and asked if he was a manager. He said he would talk to Ed about the way I was treated and he had the service line replace my Cheesesteak. I do like the food at Lubys. I don't care much for Ed though. Oh Luby's! Look I'm sure there are going to be a bunch of haters but come on, it's Luby's! I've never cared much for cafeteria style food anyways and I always felt like it was pretty boring. And I still don't understand why seniors love it either. The food at Luby's in general is your very average, home-cooked style cafeteria. My coworker seemed to feel that it's a great deal. But I strongly disagree. I don't usually feel like spending 13-14 bucks on tilapia or chicken fried steak with sides and a soda unless it's really good food. This last time, feeling frugal, I went for the pork chop special with a baked potato. The pork chop was nearly rock hard while the potato was decent. I got out there only spending about 8 bucks so it wasn't all lost but it could have been much better. Look, in the end, it's still Luby's. Got the vegetable plate... with over 20 plus vegetables to choose from, you can't go wrong.. I chose eggplant parm, cabbage,, green beans and fried okra... It's Texas, you know the southern vegetables have to be good, and they were. .. The eggplant was lightly fried and topped with a delicious marinara sauce and cheese. The cabbage sautéed with bacon & onion, black eyed peas were seasoned just right and hey fried okra... always a winner... Top it off with tea and you've got a great meal! I grew up going to this chain cafeteria in Houston. Recently I started going to this location. I gotta say (much to my surprise) that I am really impressed. The food is very good. Their fried fish is superb. Not greasy and flavorful. Chicken dishes are wonderful. Veggies never disappoint. And having been raised and lived in Texas all my life, their veggies are seriously as good as mom and grandma. Pea salad is great. Rolls warm and not dry. Service great. Price perfect. And make sure you signup for their emails. You'll get discounts on LuAnn and once a week you get a BOGO on a regular dinner! So why not 5 stars? This is one of the last Luby's locations in the Dallas area, and they know how to get it right! The food presentation is beautiful as you travel down the serving line, and the food is full of flavor! The overall establishment is just wrapping up on a much needed facelit, which is great, because before then, the dinning room was lacking that modern touch! The servers working the floor are friendly and don't mind refilling your drink, or bringing you a to-go container, but the line servers appear a little overwhelmed at times. It's not a surprise to me that this Luby's continues to drop in ratings. As stated before, I love cafeteria food and very much have always enjoyed Luby's, but enough is enough; I don't believe that anyone ever reads the comments anyway and no management employee cares what is written about the food and the service. I traveled to this location about 5:50 tonight and waited in line (a good sign) for over 40 minutes. I ordered a small chop steak (which turned out to be undercooked, RED INSIDE), which I trashed, soggy pinto beans, way over cooked and blah green beans. I was very hungry and was looking forward to a delicious meal; boy was I disappointed. I want to point out that the major reason I have a problem with this Luby's is the rude employees (minus the checkout lades who are always smiling and happy), but the bitch ladies behind the counter are just horrible; never a greeting, never a smile, never a kind question such as "what would you like tonight, sir?" Is it worth my drive? I'm not sure and it's most doubtful + when I get a raw chop steak, I must question myself and I should understand why people don't eat here regularly and if they do, they never return. I am not going to spend $14.00 just to be downsized loud and without any concern for me, must stop. I had Thanksgiving dinner here Thursday and it was terrible. The cashier who you pay before you get any service or taste your food called me out in front of everyone in the line and said your not giving a tip. Then said no tip really loud. I thought it was extremely rude being she said it so loud and asking for a tip before you even taste your food or get service is inappropriate. By the way the food was cold. There's an advertisement on the wall when you're about to get your tray that's enticing. $29.95 cheese enchiladas serves 6? With two sides. I think great! The cashier without even letting me finish my first sentence directed me to the line...not to go line but the EAT HERE line. So I reluctantly went and knew I was going to be redirected to the TO Go line..but I had to show her after explaining to the entree server I called in an order....then she tried sending me back again.but did not go and had to raise my voice for her to hear me and try to listen. She felt embarrassed and I proceeded to the TO GO/PICK UP section. Not more than 15 feet away. No one assisted me. Cricket....cricket.... looked around and almost all of the employees were eating. One even came to the counter to get something but no eye contact. That would mean she'd have to help me... Manager came handed me tall styrofoam cup and apologized offering a free drink while I wait. I had my first Luby's experience at this location. The food is surprisingly good! A lot of yummy options like bbq chicken, salmon, chicken friend steak and Mac and cheese. The portions are really big as well! The staff is really nice and friendly. I had the bbq chicken, fried okra, and jalapeño Mac and cheese! The only reason I gave it three stars is because this location is not very clean. My steak knife was dirty and almost all the tables were dirty, also the floor is sticky. We were happy to there was a soup and salad option but disappointed by the results. The salad was the best part of the deal, very fresh greens, lots of toppings including broccoli, cucumber, egg; the list was extensive with about four dressings to choose from. For the soup you get a choice of two depending on the day. Ours was a Seafood Gumbo and Chicken and Rice. Neither option was very warm, the chicken and rice was bland and came with surprise chicken gristle and the gumbo was spicy and should have named that way "spicy chicken gumbo". We were told it came with "bread" so two of the three in our party selected cheese bread and the third a muffin. When we got to the cashier we were told only a selection of two of the breads were options and the cheese bread was not one of them. No sorry, no we will remind folks on the line of this, nothing, just pay and move along. The cheese bread was dry and not worth the 59 cents. I want my $1.18 back. read more

Tonight the spousal unit and I had to go to Walmart and conveniently located just one block north is Lubys. The sign outside was beckoning us with big letters saying "Luann plates $5.99 Monday to Friday". How could we not go in? It was also Tuesday which is "senior citizens" discount day! SCORE! Well, unfortunately for us, the discount for "over 55" types is from 3:00 to 5:30. FIVE THIRTY??? Are they kidding me? But the $5.99 Luann was still calling my name. The line was short since we got there relatively early from our Walmart shopping adventure (that's another story altogether) so I am going to take you on a short tour of the serving line at Lubys because I had time to check it out! The salad bar looked ok and they even had that green jello/cream cheese stuff that always seems to show up on the table at Thanksgiving and Christmas family get-togethers. I passed on the salads because I was saving myself for the main event! The selection of meat/fish items was really good. Seriously sizzling steaks, three kinds of fish including the fabulous fried cod and the baked white fish with the breadcrumbs and almond topping, chicken fried steak and fried chicken and more. They had some new items like shrimp and more expensive selections which my husband succumbed to. (I stuck faithfully to Luann). The veggies were great, fresh whipped mashed potatoes, baked sweet potato's, pintos, baked squash casserole, several green veggies and macaroni and cheese. The bread selection was small but the cornbread with jalapenos and corn was warm, crisp on the outside and moist on the inside...delish. Of course, the deserts all looked scrumptious. I generally have found that cafeteria deserts look good but are either too sweet or totally bland and I'm not much of a sweet eater. They had everything from chocolate cake and cheesecake to an awesome looking coconut meringue pie. I succumbed! I tried what I thought was a lemon meringue which turned out to be kind of a fluffy lemon cheesecake with a graham cracker crust BUT between the crust and cheesecake was a tiny little raspberry jam layer. What a surprise and it was very good. Not too sweet, great texture and extremely rich. I took one bite and saved the rest for later. Even the iced tea was good. The whole meal left me kinda shocked...IT'S LUBYS for God's sake. I must also complement the servers at the line and the guy who worked our table. The line folks were not at all bored and were actually seemed interested in what I wanted, answering questions graciously. They also have people assigned to a group of tables to fill tea glasses, offer condiments, and doggie bags at the end of the meal. Very pleasant! They also had 50's rock and roll playing on the radio which was kinda fun and I guess it was to appeal to us "oldie but goodies" crowd. Not safe rock and roll either, I heard some kick ass Little Richard low down and dirty rock and roll! I feel kinda weird writing a glowing review for a cafeteria but either they were having an exceptionally good night or I am exceptionally easily entertained. Either way, it was a good meal at a good price and kinda fun for a change of pace. I went in expecting a regular cafeteria experience, bland but filling. Let me start by saying I'm really picky about food so usually cafeteria food usually isn't my thing. I received a coupon in the mail for BOGO Luanne platter so my daughter and I decided to give it a try. The food was great I had the chicken fried steak, steamed cabbage and mashed potatoes and gravy. Ordered a turkey cooked and to be hot for a pot luck at work. Came here and the turkey was cooked but not hot. I talked the the manager and they gave me no hassle about heating the turkey up. Only thing I had to do was wait an hour. They were kind enough to give me the turkey free of charge. This is my first time here as a recommendation only. For 2 people my bill was 36.00 for that amount I could have gone to a nice restaurant and been waited on. The line server was annoyed at best when you asked for something (excuse me for asking for a veggie). The food was so salty that I could hardly eat it. The only thing good was the table staff. I've always loved Luby's, when you're feeling blue, nothing can brighten up your day better than a Luann platter. It seems like the prices have increased, but I may be mistaken. $7something for a generous main course and 2 heaping sides is pretty good, but then you tack on your drink, the required pumpkin pie, and bread it comes out to be about $30 for 2 people. I always get the macaroni and cheese, it is hands down the best mac out there ( and I know my mac and cheese) along with the fried okra and some sweet tea to wash it down. read more

I went for breakfast on Saturday and it was not good. Not at all I didn't even eat a third of the food. I had french toast which was rather hard, I could only eat the center. I had the veggie scrambled eggs which were very watery and yucky, I revived them a bit by putting them on a tortilla and dumping salsa over it. The biscuit with a fried chicken tender and smothered in honey was yucky. The sausage had a hard piece of grissle in it and the diet coke was good. I work nearby and went to Lubys to pick up lunch. The woman (Cris) at the take out table was extremely rude, and made me feel as if I were a burden to her. The food quality was good, but nothing extraordinary. I had a salad ( apx. $3) and soup ($2) for a light lunch. I had to bag the meal myself, was rudely handed plastic ware and wasn't offered any dressing with my salad. I would say this place is good for kids because kids eat free on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
