It's usually a hard decision of what and where to eat when my friend and I get together for our 1 to 2 times a month bromance (kinda like Harold and Kumar when they go to white castle) over brunch. This weekend it took a little over 2 hours to finally come to a consensus. He usually lets me choose because i'm a elite and he's not.... so he claims. Well it's quite funny that we had our first go around 7-8 years ago and he was the one that brought me here. I guess he should be the elite and I should be the lowly non-elitist! *bows down to dai-lo* Anywho, lets get this review on the road. Location/Parking: SE corner of S. Arroyo Pkwy and Pico St. Parking can be had in their decent size parking lot and you can also park along Pico St. Just look for parking restrictions. Ambiance/Decor: Kinda reminds me like a burger joint with a decent amount of tables and booths. They also have outdoor seating to take in c2o from cars and vitamin d from the sun. Service: Service can be a bit rough depending who is behind the register. Other yelpers, have complained out the "Old Man"/Owner who is a grumpy pants. Other than that, ALL IS WELL! Food comes out like speedy gonzales faaaaaaaaastttt!!! "Ándale arriba arriba" when we visit Food: I got 5 words for YOU! 1) BACON (makes the world go round!) 2) BREAKFAST 3) BURRITO 4) WITH 5) AVOCADO (costs extra) *burrito also comes with hash browns, potatoes, cheese, and egg. The burrito is a bit intimidating and mystical! For $10 and change, you get a burrito that is a lean, mean..... food coma machine! Pants will get tighter and waistline will definitely expand a bit! I heard and seen the burritos and chili cheese fries people post of Lucky Boy and they always get me salivating. I was in the area and deciding to give it a try. I ordered a breakfast burrito with bacon and sausage with extra cheese and a small order of chili cheese fries. My friend got a pastrami burger and fries. Within 2-3 my order was ready. Lucky Boy's service is down to a T. Pro Tip: You get one ranch for free. Also they give two salsas per one burrito. So I dug into the chili cheese fries first. The chili itself isn't greasy like Tommy's. But it doesn't have any flavor. It wasn't salty, or savory. Nor beefy or peppery. It was very lackluster and felt more of a texture mush thing going on. The cheese cheese even though they put a lot wasn't bringing any cheesy flavor too. I started eating them with the ranch. Their ranch is really good so it helped. I started on my B.B. I got it with extra cheese so I was expecting extra cheese gooey ness. Nope. It had a average amount of cheese. The hash browns are more of not so fried potatoes instead of the crispy hash browns. The bacon is crunchy and good. Sausage was okay. Overall flavor of the potatoes was bland. The scrambled egg was sectioned at the bottom of the burrito so I didn't get any of that until the end. And lastly the salsa. I was hoping for something spicy or tomatoey flavoring. Maybe even onion packed. It's more bland than anything else. And it's not spicy at all. One thing the breakfast burrito has going for it is that it is massive. It's the bigger than a chipotle burrito. My friends fries weren't seasoned or salted. And the pastrami wasn't that good in my opinion. The tomato was thicker than the beef patty. Lucky Boy you get a 2.2 Super fast service. Delicious ranch. Big portions. I have heard this place had some amazing breakfast burritos, and I love breakfast burritos so that got me hooked immediately. I got theirs with ham and bacon and my god, that burrito was massive. It was loaded witih so much meat and eggs and potatoes, I was already full only eating half of it. For a place that opens up late, it is the perfect late night snack if you are craving it. One of my fav spots in Pasadena. This time I ordered the 1/4 bacon cheese burger with onion rings. As always the bacon is nice and crispy and the portions are crazy. I liked the burger, only thing I wish is that it was a little juicer, it was a bit dry so I had to keep dipping it. The bag of onion rings were so big I couldn't finish it. I've been eating at Lucky Boy since 1999 (almost every week back in the day), so I can say with confidence, that the last few years have seen a serious decline in the food. My family ordered a breakfast burrito, bean and cheese burritos, and chili cheese fries. They were all a pale comparison of what we enjoyed in the past. The burritos had whole, rather dry, pinto beans instead of the wonderfully greasy refried, the chili on the fries was different, and the breakfast burrito was, in no way, the Lucky Boy burrito I used to buy extra of to freeze for later. Cheese wasn't even melted. All the ingredients were segregated, and the eggs were rubbery. We are NOT fussy eaters, so when the kids didn't finish their food (as the rest of us didn't as well) there are issues. I made myself something else at home. :( I talked to my buddies who eat there more often and they confirmed they stopped going because there are better options these days. It's sad because we have a strong connection with this wonderful place from our youth. We hope it's just covid issues. Anyway, be warned that you might not get the experience you had in the past. I was in the area and wanted to try something local and affordable. So this restaurant definitely called my name. There were so many comments talking about how great their breakfast burrito was. Even their signage claims "Home of the Famous Breakfast Burrito." Thus, I ordered a bacon breakfast burrito. The burrito is pretty huge. It was $9.07 plus tax. It came out in like 5 minutes. Pretty fast. Based off quantity, you should definitely feel more than satisfied. It can definitely fill at least 2 people. The bacon was nice and crispy. It definitely had that crunch with every bite. The amount of bacon was great as well. No complaints. In terms of flavor, it tasted like an average breakfast burrito. There was nothing spectacular about it. I've had my fair share of burritos and there was nothing else appealing to me except for its monstrous size and amount of crispy bacon. I ate it with and without the salsa. The salsa was bland. I might as well just added ketchup. If you're drunk or just hungry and on a budget, this is a decent place to come. If you want quality and taste, go elsewhere. I'm not a college student any more so I'll go try some other place next. FYI, the burrito didn't look appealing either. Salsa is terrible. Listen. The breakfast burritos are huge and priced fair. I work graveyard, and the early opening hours are appreciated! I've enjoyed the burritos here. I often order the ham breakfast burrito but today they must've forgot to add a bit of salt to the egg and practically ban any flavor in the salsa. You can literally taste the butter and I don't mind that, but without salting the egg everything tastes bland. The salsa was always better at the Walnut location (IMO) but it just might be getting worse here. It was like adding tomato sauce to my burrito today. Yuck. I wrote about a similar issue at another poplar restaurant. If you offer salsa, why would you not make it the most authentic vs tone down to meet sensitive taste buds? This is a a Pasadena institution and if we are being honest one of the 5 best breakfast burritos in the Los Angeles area. You can order a breakfast burrito any time of day you want at this sweet slice of grease diner heaven. This place is best known for their breakfast burritos but they offer much more lol classic diner goods like the bacon avocado burger, fried zucchini, pastrami sandwiches, and chili cheese fries are just some of the things that make this place great. In the AM the breakfast burrito is King, and they will come out fast and HOT! Be prepared to order quick or they will pass you up. Just a heads up, the salsa is house-made and with a kick. There is ample parking and seating with good turn over adjacent to this stand. Located on a busy street, the center island prevents a left turn into one of the entrances into the parking.
