I have gone to this supermarket for their "buy one get one free" deals several times. Finally, I can't help but complain about their "business strategy" - they never put up the prices for BOGO items. When you purchase them at the cash register, you will find out that the deal end up to be the item's regular price! The so-called BOGO deal is to get you to buy two! E.g. 6oz of raspberries cost $3 (regular price). For the BOGO deal, 6oz of raspberries cost $6, you buy 2 boxes so each box costs $3. Another note on their staff - they don't usually understand the customer's request. They respond with something that is totally different! read more

Don't come here too often as Sprouts, Safeway, Trader Joe, Smart & Final, and Target closer to my house. So there has to be something special on sale for me to hop in my car and drive 2.2 miles to this place. Lived in the area from 1979 to 1988, before moving to the Las Palmas Park area. Lucky's was here back then, but recently years they've completely remodeled the store. Gone are the small, crowded aisles, dim lighting and dusty floors. Large aisles, bright lighting, sparking clean floors. They even have windows in the walls to lighten things up. Came here during the senior hours Tuesday and Thursday 6am-9am, so that us geezers don't have to risk their lives with the crowds during the coronavirus pandemic. Right outside the only entrance and exit is a store employee, wearing a mask, and gloves, sanitizing the shopping cart handles with spray and paper towel. Santa Clara county ordinance requires all customers to wear masks, 6 feet social distancing, with no outside bags permitted. Today I get 4 ears of corn for 88 cents -yeah the husks look raggedy, but the corn inside the husk looks and tastes great several days from now after being refrigerated. Just like humans, you can't tell by looks -why do you think my wife married me in 2003? It wasn't for looks! Stock up on previous day unsold stock, with price of 6 ounce Driscoll blackberries reduced from $3.99 to 99 cents. Get three of those, but should have bought double that, as they lasted several days in the fridge. Get 4 pounds of cherries at $1.99 a pound with residential only mailed coupon, the lowest price of any major supermarket chain so far this season. And these are high quality dark ripened cherries. Yelp friend Kaliko was telling me that in Honolulu, Costco was selling red cherries at $8.99 for 2 pounds. One of the few advantages to living in CA compared to Hawaii! Finally, get the last salmon fillet at $5.99 a pound. Only problem is that you have to buy the full fillet, and that's 3.61 pounds. Apparently they don't restock new fish until about midday, after senior hours. You know what the wife and I are going to be eating the next 3 nights for dinner! Hoarders are still cleaning out the shelves of toilet paper, paper towels, and hand sanitizer, as none left, three months into the pandemic. Try to leave out the second entrance, which is closed. This is contrary to CDC guidelines, where people are supposed to enter one entrance and exit through a second entrance, so as to maintain social distancing and not to pass each other during the pandemic. I guess it is for security purposes, where the person cleaning the cart handles also doubles as tackling shoplifters to the ground, as this is the sketchy part of town. read more

First time visiting this Lucky California store and I have to say, this one seems to be on the smaller size. It felt really cramped shopping here, likely because everything seemed to close to one another, due to the small store size and space. Also, the place in the front where they store the shopping carts definitely could use an upgrade. I liked that they had hand baskets here for customers to use. They only had 1 register open here and the line was long. They also had self check outs, but nobody seemed interested in using them, so there was along line in the one line open... This lucky is located in a plaza with tons of places to eat like cafes, Starbucks and a Pizza hut on Mathilda. The parking lot is pretty big so that shouldn't be a problem finding a spot to drive in. I like this Lucky because it has a lot of the newer health foods and the veggies and fruits seem to be pretty fresh. Not a problem. The floral department is pretty good to pick some fresh flowers too overall, no complaints. This has been my place to pick up flowers and a few items to make smoothies on busy days because I like a lighter and textured smoothie sometimes. YEAH! The cashiers here seem to be really nice and the self check out seems to be open and operating on the weekends. Great. The bakery section in this grocery store is really sweet they've got eclairs and tiramisu and dulce de leche. I go easy on the really sugary stuff now a days but when I'm in the mood the cake here never fails! It's so legit. Overall a great place to shop no complaints. I go to this Lucky location multiple times and I have to say that I have seen multiple incidents where the customer service is very embarrassing. The first incident I went here was when I saw the store manager get in a shouting match with a customer and kicked him out of the store. It was so unprofessional to witness and the customer service was just awful, especially from a manager! The customer just wanted assistance about a product and he became so rude in his tone. My second incident was today where I was doing the self-checkout and I had trouble with finding the Soup item in the search. I requested for assistance and the clerk who came over said "it's the code on the cup". I said "we already tried that". She responds "well you did it wrong" and walks away! So now feeling like idiots we keep trying and it's the same result, we don't see the soup item showing up. We call her over again and tell her it is not showing up, so she rudely walks over and does it herself and clicks on an icon for "muffins". And then walks away. The customer service is absolutely horrible here and I hope it changes. read more

Let me start by saying how irritated I am that one employee could alter my feelings towards my neighborhood Lucky so much! I've been coming here the past 4 years and have always been able to do my grocery shopping and be treated as a valued customer. All of the staff are usually extremely friendly and have REAL conversations with the customers. I plan to get names & update this because 99% of the people here are great... but you know what they say about one bad apple ruining the batch right!! After the rude interaction with Gloria, I won't be returning here unless absolutely necessary. I'd rather take my business to Trader Joe's or Safeway a little further down Mathilda... It was an early Friday morning and she was already having a grumpy, stank, unfriendly attitude. She was gossiping with another coworker and didn't care to help out the customers at the self check out systems. An older gentleman noticed we needed help and I appreciate him acknowledging and trying to help us! Kudos!! But then, he flagged down Gloria and she came over, looking annoyed as if we inconvenienced her by interrupting her conversation!! Anyways, she was super rude to my Mom and I. How disrespectful to give attitude for no reason to anyone, especially your elders! She muttered something with attitude about sliding our card and not inserting (even though there's a chip reader) and then walked away before making sure our card scanned. All in all, extremely rude customer service by her. Maybe a customer service training course would help re-align her attitude? If you are grumpy first thing in the morning, maybe work with your Supervisor to switch your shift?! Anyways, maybe one day I can think about revising my review because I absolutely loved this Lucky's, especially since it's my neighborhood go-to. The quality of service has really gone downhill. Using the pandemic as an excuse, Lucky shuts down all the self-check kiosks early, has only one or two check stands open and subjects customers to long lines. Their "three's a crowd" ad slogan is pure baloney! Also, Lucky does not keep its shelves well-stocked. When an item is depleted, it takes a very long time for it to be back in stock. I never look forward to going to Lucky. Not sure if it's because their produce prices aren't the greatest, or the fact that I can never find an employee in the aisles, or the self-checkout machines that give me trouble more often than not, the panhandlers that frequently camp the outside of the store during the day, or the parking lot filled with crappy drivers who clearly should have their license revoked. Ok, maybe it's all of the above. Nevertheless, there are a few things that Lucky does right: * Pick 5 for $25. Lucky routinely has meat sales (check the weekly ad), where over 60 cuts of meat are just $5 if you buy any 5 of them. This can save you some green - like on a two-pack of ground turkey which is normally $7. * Occasionally really good prices on salmon, like $5/lb fresh and $3/lb frozen. * Occasionally good prices on packaged goods like bread ($2 for a 24oz loaf). * Self-serve industrial coffee grinder! * Friendly employees, who for instance said it was ok for me to use the coffee grinder to grind my own beans that I bought elsewhere. * Though the deli selection is a bit limited, they do have these monster hoagie sandwiches, the equivalent of two Subway footlongs, for something like $6. * They open at 5am and close at 1am. Heh, they might as well be open 24 hours, but 20 hours aint shabby. For produce, better value is had at Sprouts and Felipe's Market. For milk, Costco wins by a longshot. For OJ, save half a buck and get it at Trader Joe's. But for meat, seafood and friggin' huge hoagie sandwiches, Lucky doesn't do too badly. No wonder I still find myself here from time to time, despite all wishes to the contrary. read more

Since Mike C.'s been doing grocery stores lately and I haven't been to a new restaurant in the last few days and am jonesing to yelp something, here I go. 3.5 for this one solely on their peppers. Highlights: - The pepper selection. Seriously, this is the big pro for this place. Other stores I go to have maybe 1 type. These guys have a section of 2 shelves of it almost of all shapes, colors, and sizes. They have not just jalapenos, but thai peppers, serranos, habaneros, and I think I even saw scotch bonnets. - They have fresh tomatillos: I usually have to buy these in cans. - Like not having to use a they-track-your-product-spending-and-market-to-you cards ;-) - People who work there are friendly and helpful. I didn't know what a turnip looked like--hey I'm just starting to cook--and a guy explained it to me and asked what I was making, etc. The team checking me out was pleasant as well. There are a lot of cranky checkers out there so that's really nice. - It's the closest normal grocery store to where I live. Lowlights (my flip side to highlights): - Just your average grocery store - Not super pleasant environment: bit dark, not super clean-feeling or up to date. I prefer the Safeway on Bernardo if I want to go a bit farther. I'll still go here cause it's close and when I'm in need of a good pepper selection. ;-) read more

While this place is old, they certainly aren't using the higher prices on goods to fix it up. Not Lucky in general, but this location specifically seems to be a bit pricier than other markets/grocery competitors. It's a fixer upper, but pretty convenient for entry because you can turn in right off Mathilda. Although parking and exiting are a bit more difficult. You can usually find a parking spot, but the shopping center is super crowded being filled with tons of establishments and the spots are kind of small. Also, easy entry. Not so easy exit. Is this a conspiracy? When you exit, you automatically get stuck again at the super busy intersection with long light waits. Also, they do have self checkout. So in - yes. In and Out (not the burger chain), great pricing, shiny newness, or the best selection, not so much. read more
