Luigi's is a nice family owned and run business. Good value for your money and very good pizza. Additionally, if you want your pie a little different, say extra thin or extra thick or extra sauce etc... All you have to do is ask and they will accommodate. I've been reading the negative reviews and I don't see where they are coming from. Fried mozzarella at any authentic Italian cuisine is not mozzarella sticks, it is a ball of fried cheese. As for my experience, I have always had great cuisine here. Tonight I had the pasta carbonara and it was stunning. It was so rich, filling, and flavorful that I wanted to eat it all but could only manage half after the appetizers (which the soup did not taste canned at all and was great). The pizza my mother, who went with me, had has excellent sauce and crust, the red sauce on any dish there is to die for. The only gripe and reason why there are 4 stars is that the pizza is just a bit greasy. Otherwise, I highly recommend this. They must be doing something right to have been open since 1956 read more

Picked up a pizza here (artichoke hearts and mushrooms), and it was pretty good. Good price, but the crust left a bit to be desired. The ingredients were fresh and delicious, and it was nice and hot when I got there, but the crust drags it down a bit. Still, looked like a nice place to eat, busy but not too crowded. read more

We have been three times and really like the place. The decor and menu are "old school" but the food is well prepared and tasty. In particular, the soup and pizza are excellent. We love the pasta sauce so much that we order extra portions to add liberally to our other food items. My wife is also a fan of the tuna salad. read more

I was really excited to go here for lunch but left disappointed by the service I received. Waited about ten minutes for my waitress to come back to my table , already gotten my food delivered by someone else, I asked for a refill on my drink was told they do not offer refills on sodas understand that but I didn't order a soda. So is water also not refilled? I just asked the waitress for my check and a to go box I would just finish my food at home. I understand if she was busy but she stood by her other table and carried on a conversation with them and that's no excuse to not give good customer service to all your tables. Will not be going back nor would I recommend this place to anyone. read more

I remember now why we have not come back in over a decade. No appetizer plates. Spongy, thick and greasy calamari, tomato sauce that is sickly sweet and nowhere near the Italian sauce I grew up with, a sticky table and to boot, a double shot of wet service dog smell to round out the dank. While I understand service dogs are and should be allowed, there should be rules for dogs with heavy smells and behaviors that are a disturbance to other patrons. We left without even ordering dinner. Highly disappointed. read more

We go to this place all of the time. It is a family owned joint that is run by generations of the same family. Most Italian eateries with a menu this size tend to struggle with consistency... not Luigi's. Everything is very good, and they've got a killer prime rib. Piccata sauce a bit "soupy" and the pizza was not thin crust NH style, with frozen strips of eggplant. Having gotten these relatively minor complaints out of the way we found Luigi's to be an excellent local dining spot for couples as well as for families.. In 2010, a Friend through another friend had told us about Luigi's. Living in Rhode Island we thought it was just another Italian restaurant. We were more than pleasantly surprised to find what a great find this place is. We went on a Thursday night about 6:30, was fairly busy and we were seated promptly. Wait staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about the entire menu (which is kinda extensive). They start out by placing at your table butter and a fresh loaf of in house made Italian bread that was nice and warm and very addictive. Eat too much of the bread and you wont have room for your entire. We started with a bowl of minestrone and an order of fried calamari. The calamari was light on the breading, not rubbery and fried to a golden brown. The minestrone was loaded with pasta and veg and was so thick you can stand a spoon up in the middle of the bowl. For entrees, my Friend had Shrimp Fri Diablo and I had Veal Luigi. Pasta on both dishes were served Al Dente, the portions were large and they were absolutely delicious. Price back then were very reasonable and even though they have increased some, still very reasonable. I do try to get here to eat about every 3/4 months. I have to say amazing service! We went there last minute Friday night just before a show, and where limited on our time. We told management and our waitress that we were in a rush. Even with the restaurant being packed they accommodated our request with extremely quick service. The food was amazing I hadn't been there in many years and I can't wait to go back. My husband & I went to Luigis the first time for our anniversary. The restaurant was crowded but it did not take too long to get a table. We started with the fried mozzarella & the mussels which were a special appetizer. Both were delicious and quite filling. We then had our dinners which were also quite delicious. We were so full we could barely breathe. The atmosphere was quaint but the service could be improved upon (it took a long time for our server to acknowledge us after we were seated). After that,the service improved. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for anyone visiting the ocean that is looking for a nice place with delicious food. read more

When were new to the area we went to Luigi's several times. We did not know that there were many, many better Italian restaurants nearby. It is hard to believe that this place gets the crowd it does. I think it is because they have huge quantities of much less than average Italian food. If you like a lot of dough and not a good pizza, order one here. Pasta dishes are also less than average. We gave this restaurant More than a weeks notice and kept them updated with the exact number of people attending. When asked ahead of time what we would be ordering, we told them that Most would be ordering appetizers and pizza but we couldn't speak for everyone. With that being said, here's our experience. No one was there to greet members of our party and direct them upstairs to the private banquet room. When we walked into the room, there were tables set along with a self serve water station. There were no menus available to look at during our wait. We arrived on time and were not greeted by a server for 25 minutes. When she finally made an appearance, we were asked what was going on. This caught me off guard because Usually a server will introduce themselves to the party and attempt to get us beverages and/or menus. This was not the case. When we asked for menus, we were told that only pizza and appetizers were available, before the server rolled her eyes and stormed off. I'm sorry for thinking this, but wouldn't we still need menus to order pizza and apps or should we have known the options before arrival? Even if menu options were limited, wouldn't it be nice to still have someone take a drink order? The staff then complained to other members of our party, letting us know that the chef is too overwhelmed and can't handle a party of our size all ordering different meals and this is why our options are limited to apps and pizza only. My mom had to go ask for menus and try to clarify what was happening and when she asked about pricing, the server just rolled her eyes once again and told her to "just go, we'll figure it out" and shooed her away. About six menus were delivered, by my mother, for 33 people to share. At this point I had personally been there for over 50 minutes before the server came back for the second time to take our drink and food order all at once. The server was rude, short tempered and had to have my mom hold her hand (figure of speech) while taking orders so she could attempt to stay organized. We were given one big basket of bread to pass around the four tables and had to get our own plates. My mom was passing out bread, trying to keep everyone happy. In the mean time, my cousin was taking orders and going downstairs to the bar because no one was checking on us or taking drink orders. When soft drinks and appetizers were finally arriving, my mom still had to help the server because she couldn't remember where anything went or who ordered what. Pizza stands were delivered to the tables, by my mom, and were some of the dirtiest things I've ever seen. I couldn't believe that a restaurant would put a dirty, sticky pizza stand out for customers to use. This was my breaking point. I brought the dirty stands downstairs and asked to speak with management. I explained that I wasn't happy having dirty items handed to us to use, the server was rude, my mother was working rather than enjoying our gathering, no one was checking on us, we were bussing our own tables, and that I was beyond disappointed with my first (and probably last) visit. This was by far one of the most unorganized establishments I've ever been to. The woman who was standing there couldn't wait to speak and kept interrupting me. At no point did the owner/manager take responsibility for anything. Instead, I was told that two servers were assigned to our party and he thought that my mom was being too aggressive (with helping) and that's why we were all upset. He also told us that they have awards and have been open for 60 years, so basically my opinion of them didn't matter. I responded by telling him "Yes, we do have two servers, one that works here and my mother." We never saw more than one server and the server we did have had tables downstairs she was waiting on as well. As much as I know that the lack of staff was the employers fault, the server did not even try to keep us informed. I have worked in restaurants as a server, bartender, host and kitchen expediter for over 15 years and know that this is not easy work, but I also know that being honest with your guests is key. When the bills were ready, I asked my mom to Not deliver them because no one was happy and asked her to speak with management again. 15% was taken off the bill and even though the gesture was nice, it did not make up for the behavior. A simple apology would have worked wonders but these people were too proud for that. Then there's the food, the apps were swimming in sauce, calamari was chewy and the pizza was just bad. It tasted like frozen pizza. My three year old wouldn't eat it and I couldn't get down more than a half of slice. Overall, one of the worst experiences I've ever had and most of my family felt the same way. read more

Luigi's is one of my favorite restaurants, only to my dismay that it is now far from my home. The experience is always fantastic, and the homemade bread is to die for. Be sure to try the fried calamari and one of my personal custom favorites- a toasted grilled chicken grinder with lettuce, tomato, american cheese, and mayo. uhhh so excellente!! I live in New Jersey, but with some friends and family living in CT, I always make it a point to stop in Luigi's whenever I'm in the area. I love the friendly staff and homey atmosphere. What really draws me to Luigi's though is the unique dishes. I've been going to Italian restaurants my entire life and I've never seen fried-dough or fried-mozzarella on any other menu. The fried-mozz is not to be mistaken for mozzarella sticks, and it shouldn't be since it is explained on the menu. Very authentic. And the minestrone is always on point. I see people here commenting that the soup tastes canned. I know homemade soup when I taste it, and Luigi's soup is most definitely homemade. 10/10 read more

I would not ever suggest going there. The pizza tastes likes its frozen. I think Red Baron frozen pizza tastes better than theirs. We ordered the "fried mozzarella" when it arrived it was swimming in sauce that tasted like Ragu. It did not taste nor even come remotely close to a "mozzarella block" like they claimed it to be. It was awful. Several people in my party have had stomach issues since eating there last night. The wait staff was terrible. We had to go to the bar ourselves to get our own drinks. The waitress did not know if she was coming or going. When we spoke to management about our experience they told us that "they've been opened 60 years and had won awards" If I could give them less than 1 star I would. I do not understand why anyone would ever go there and how they have won any awards with their poor service and the WORST food that I have ever had. There's a very simple reason why the parking lot is always at it's capacity. Luigi's is a great place. This place is family run, and it shows. We go here mainly for their specialty pizzas. Clams casino one of the best around. Service always friendly and very efficient. Very reasonably priced meals, pizza and drinks. This is an Old Saybrook original. Grew up going to Luigi's as one of our favorite restaurants. Always a great place to celebrate the end of a sports season with the team, or before prom meals. Haven't been in about 30 yrs. and thought to give it a try. So glad we did! Because it was a Saturday night we called and they recommended reservations, and upon arrival our table was ready and we were immediately seated, our table set and menus already waiting for us. Our server brought us hot bread and butter as soon as we were seated, and we weren't rushed to make our selections. The food is as good as I remember. My husband had a meatball/sausage pizza and he said it was amazing. He said the "gravy" they use was the best. Half came home with us. I follow a GF diet, and they have both GF pasta and pizza (though the crust is frozen, which is typical w/GF pizza). I ordered the Chicken Piccata and it was one of the best I have ever had. The chicken was very tender. They even asked if I would like my piccata sauce plain or they could use corn starch as the thickener instead of flour. I have never been asked that before, and it just showed the extra care they use in serving any special needs. The GF pasta was cooked to perfection. The side salad served itself was large and beautiful, including lettuce, carrots, cucumber, cabbage and tomato. Don't know why I waited so long to enjoy this wonderful restaurant again, but it is now going to be our "go to" for Italian. No need to go to New Haven for a great Italian meal. the spinach is frozen! never refilled water glass; canned vodka sauce not bad but regular red sauce flavorless: pasta good texture & taste but do specify anything but regular red sauce. Salad: put together possibly in am: in a time if fresh garden or farmers market vegetables the salad had one thin slice each of hot house tomato & cucumber. didn't have pizza but appears that is all the 'regulars' order. beware! coffee good taste but weak. tiramasou excellent but very wet. read more
