Don't get the sloppy Luke. What is this? Chili on a bun with bbq sauce? Utterly ridiculous...

#5. Homemade Italian Beef French Fries
    Drake M.

Went here with recommendations, as I was in the area. The first thing I noticed was a brightly colored building. I ordered an Italian Beef, dipped with hot giardiniera combo. I received my food quickly, and as I unwrapped my beef it was loaded with peppers. It looked and smell awesome. After a couple of bites the meat ate dry and it had a flavor that I couldn't put my finger on. I was thinking about asking for more juice to pour over the Italian Beef. The hot peppers had no zing to them. I don't mind frozen fries but they just need a moment longer in the fryer and more salt.

Luke's on Harlem - best Breaded Steak Sandwich in Chicago!

If you're craving a true Chicago staple, Luke's on Harlem delivers! Their Breaded Steak Sandwich is unbelievable--crispy, juicy, and packed with bold Italian flavors. It's the kind of sandwich you can't stop thinking about after you leave.

This is one of those places I have driven paste thousands of times but have never been to. Today we gave Luke's on Harlem a try. I have frequented Luke's Italian Beef in downtown Chicago but today I found out they are not directly related. Luke's on Harlem (the original from 1973) has your standard Chicago fast-food menu: Italian Beef, Italian Sausage, hot dog,  hamburger, pizza by the slice,  etc.... my lunch partners got the Italian Beef, and the other friend got the Italian Sausage. What caught my eye was the Breaded Steak Sandwich; I'm a fan of the famous Ricobene's but the Luke's version is about half the price. I asked cashier/ order taker: he acknowledged "the Southside original" but said theirs is smaller, better suited for a single person. He is right about that the Ricobene's, it is a three or even four-meal sandwich; it is absolutely HUGE. The Luke's on Harlem version is still a large sandwich, and I could not finish half of it. It was mighty tasty too, it comes on French bread in a tomato sauce,  I got it with cheese (an upcharge). The French bread stood up to the tomato sauce and steak nicely,  it is a hearty meal that will satisfy and under $10.00. The staff was helpful and friendly, it was like we were immediately local customers that have been coming in for years. The also had bespoke Chicago art on the walls, my favorite was the hotdog with the Chicago skyline, also a Chicago flag with the letters 'b-e-e-f' on each of the stars. We are coming back to try the Sloppy Luke (their take on the Sloppy Joe).

    Dipped Italian beef with peppers

First time trying this place today. I was shocked that they had a drive-through it made my day. The staff was very friendly and quick. They even gave me a sample of Italian ice! The food bomb. I got a chopped salad where they use grilled chicken & not chewy cold chicken. I got a beef dipped with hot peppers and spicy mozerrella sticks sticks just for 31 bucks. I will def be coming back can't recommend this place any more they are already winning! Thank you guys!!

    Italian beef & cheese fries

We went because there's a local You Tuber that said their breaded steak sandwich was better than Ricobene's so we had to try it. Short answer...he's wrong. It's good but a little lacking in flavor. We also had a beef sandwich which was ok. I asked for wet or dipped (they didn't ask) & it was still pretty dry. They may have touched the bread to the gravy because it was greasy (so they didn't stir it first). Cheese fries were decent. Thin fries with lots of cheese. Inside was a typical Chicago beef place, service was quick, employees were friendly.

Great selection of local favorites. This place is a combination hot dog, pizza, hamburger, and Italian beef stand. Inside is plenty of room to sit and eat there. Brightly lit and colorful dinning room. Of course they have a drive thru and you can order ahead. Service is very quick. This is a great neighborhood stand.

Greetings my Foodzies, we had just come from a Cubs win and as a celebration we decided to stop at Luke's on Harlem at 3133 n Harlem Ave. and indulge in a couple Ribeye charcoal steak sandwiche. I had it with everything (lettuce, tomato and onions) she had hers plain. The steak was thin and small; didn't even cover the bread. There was no charcoal or any seasoning flavor that I could detect. The onions weren't grilled enough for me and the fries were mushy right from a bag. I used to get their double cheeseburger with everything and it was delicious. I don't know what's changed but we weren't happy with it. I give this restaurant 2 stars. Well as always let me know what you think. Ciao Ciao for now.

All bread no beef asked for hot peppers and got a very minimal amount. Definitely better options in the area.

They push the Mediterranean Bread, and honestly, you should let them. It's enormous, blistered, fragrant, and arrives like a hot air balloon made of carbs. More importantly, it gives you something genuinely delicious to tear into while you wait for the pizza pot pies to emerge from whatever subterranean chamber they're baked in. It's both a starter and a survival tool. A reservation is non‑negotiable unless you enjoy contemplating your own mortality in a weekend crowd. The wait times can stretch so long you could starve to death before your name is called -- and the regulars will nod knowingly as they step around your skeleton. Plan ahead. The salads are comically oversized, the kind of portions that make you wonder if they're meant for a family of four or a single very determined marathon runner. But let's be honest: no one is here for lettuce. We're all here for the pizza pot pie, that molten, bread‑wrapped, cheese‑laden dome of joy that defies every attempt at categorization. It's not deep dish, it's not thin crust -- it's its own thing entirely, and that's the point. This is the place you bring out‑of‑town guests when you want to show them something uniquely Chicago without defaulting to the usual deep‑dish suspects. But it's also the place you come back to on your own, because once you've had that pizza pot pie, it lives rent‑free in your brain until you return.

He recommended some great items on the menu, checked in at just the right times without ever hovering, and somehow managed to get our food out incredibly quickly. I got there and there was about 15 people in front of me in line. The hostess was really nice and because I was there by myself, she called up to the bar to see if there was any seats at the bar so I didn't have to wait. I found out that Chicago style pizza takes about 45 minutes to cook, but I was willing to wait. After about an hour I asked where the pizza was, and they said "we lost it". Although I was disappointed that I had waited so long , they were accommodating and apologetic, and took ownership, which I really respected and appreciated. They said they could get me another pizza quicker than 45 minutes, so in total I waited about an hour and a half. They asked me if there's any appetizers I wanted for free or drinks and because I didn't wanna fill up before my pizza and I had already had a salad , I declined. The pizza came out and it was absolutely delicious. Was it worth the wait? Because I didn't have anything else that evening for a while that I needed to do, it was worth it. If I had been in a rush, it would've been a different story. The hostess, the bartender/waiter and the manager were all very nice and attentive. I had a great time at the bar socializing with people from different parts of the country. I would definitely recommend Giordano's.
