I do not go out for breakfast. I want to be very clear about this upfront so you understand the magnitude of what I am about to tell you. I do not go out for breakfast because of what I make at home. And before you roll your eyes and say oh he makes avocado toast, I need you to stop right there because this is not about avocado toast. This is about a breakfast situation I have refined over approximately four years of dedicated weekend mornings that involves three eggs scrambled low and slow in a pan with more butter than a cardiologist would recommend, a specific hot sauce I order online from a small operation in New Mexico that I will not name here because I do not need the competition for the inventory, sourdough from a local bakery that I slice thick and toast twice, and a cup of coffee made in a moka pot that takes eleven minutes and requires a level of patience I do not apply to any other area of my life. This breakfast is my masterpiece. It is the thing I make when I have nowhere to be and the morning is mine and the light is coming through the kitchen window at a good angle and the world feels manageable. It is perfect and I will not be replacing it. So when someone suggests going out for breakfast I experience a very specific internal conflict that plays out like a negotiation between two versions of myself. Version one is a reasonable adult who understands that restaurants exist and are good and that sometimes you should leave your house. Version two is a man who spent four years dialing in a scrambled egg situation and is not about to hand that experience over to a line cook he has never met. Version two usually wins. I usually stay home. I make my eggs. The moka pot hisses. Life is good. And then Luna Roja opened at 1525 Elm Street in downtown Dallas on April 2nd and somebody sent me the menu and I stared at it for a long time in my kitchen while my moka pot sat on the stove doing nothing, judging me, waiting. Luna Roja is inside the Hilton Garden Inn downtown which is a sentence that should give you pause and also does not matter at all once you are inside because the room has a floor to ceiling mural of an agave plant eclipsing a full red moon that is so visually unhinged and so completely committed to itself that you forget immediately that there is a hotel attached. Chef Omar Larson came up through Kessaku and Monarch, which are not small rooms, and is now doing modern Mexican with shareable plates and over fifty tequilas and mezcals and a monthly TacoKase experience which is exactly what it sounds like, an omakase but tacos, which is an idea so correct that I am genuinely angry nobody did it sooner. I went for breakfast. I went for breakfast and I am not going to pretend otherwise or construct a narrative where I only went for lunch. I went for the breakfast service. I walked through the door at an hour I will not specify but it was early and the light was coming through the windows at approximately the same angle as it does in my kitchen and for one brief disorienting moment I thought about my moka pot sitting at home on the stove, sad and unused, and then the tuna tostada arrived and I completely forgot I own a moka pot. The shrimp and scallop aguachile with cucumber and radish showed up and did something to me that my eggs have never done. I am not saying my eggs are bad. My eggs are excellent. I am saying that the aguachile and my eggs are operating in completely different categories of experience and comparing them would be like comparing a bike ride to Frisco to sitting on the couch. What a great place with a beautiful design. During my stay at the adjoining Hilton I took the opportunity to sample Happy Hour, Dinner and a few Breakfasts. The staff is exceptionally friendly. Anna and JT in the morning and Kat, a visiting hospitality manager in the evenings with Shane at the bar. Food is very well presented and beautifully served. 3 breakfasts for me; Huevos Ranchos, Breakfast Tacos and an Omelette. All fresh and delicious. For dinner I had the Acho Glazed Short-ribs which were fall apart tender and wonderfully sauced. Really great dish at a very nice establishment. read more

Luna Roja has a fun, lively atmosphere with a casual modern-Mexican vibe that works well for dinner and drinks downtown. The space feels energetic without being overly fancy, making it a good spot for a laid-back night out with friends. We started with the queso and street corn for appetizers. The street corn was definitely my favorite -- flavorful, creamy, and easily the standout starter. For the main course, I ordered the carne asada. The flavors were really good, but the steak itself was a little chewy. Dessert was the highlight of the meal. We had the churro doughnut balls and the tres leches, and both were excellent. If you have a sweet tooth, definitely save room for dessert here. Overall, a great downtown Dallas spot with good flavors, fun vibes, and desserts that stood out more than the mains. My wife and daughter took me to Luna Roja for Father's Day this past weekend and it was a great experience. The restaurant was decorated nicely and very clean and organized. The service we received from Mia was amazing and very professional. She knew the menu from front to back and gave us great recommendations for all 3 courses. We started with a crispy pork belly and shrimp appetizer that was second to none. The other appetizer was a shrimp, scallop and radish salad. This was another home run dish. For dinner I had the seafood enchiladas and it was also. Can't say enough about about the whole experience. The manager was stopping by for quick conversations and making sure we were taken care of. My friend and I went to Luna Roja for brunch this weekend. The ambience was very warm and sophisticated. We had excellent service from our server Johnathon. Johnathon was very attentive and when we explained that we would be splitting two entrées, he let the kitchen know of our plan and asked them to equally split the entrées between two plates so that we wouldn't have to separate it at the table. This was kind and made diving right into brunch that much easier. The chilequiles were delicious. Luna Roja's salsas were tasty and added the right flavors to each dish. The Tres Leches French toast was a delicious sweet breakfast treat. The margarita and mimosa we had were amazing. I would definitely come back! Complementary valet was a great perk! read more

Made the mistake of ordering the scallops. Three quarter sized scallops that were cooked till they were rubber and smelled very fishy. $38 for three miserable scallops, corn purée that was like glue, and no redeeming qualities. Had the pancakes for breakfast and those were fine. Go literally anywhere else for dinner. When the manager was told about the scallops no attempt at service recovery was made. I went to Luna Roja on a Tuesday afternoon at about 12:30pm and sat at the bar. I'm not sure there was anyone else in the place. (One other customer that came to the bar was never seen or acknowledged, so he later had to get up and find a server to get a menu.) I ordered the "Taqueria Smash Burger" (I know, I know, burger at a Mexican place, but that's what sounded good.) Now, I understand that some trendy burger places will trick up their burgers and put a giant medium-cooked patty in the middle of a bunch of oddball toppings. But that is not what I expected when I ordered a "smash burger." The sandwich was a bit thicker than I expected upon arrival, but okay, different interpretation, I guess. Once I bit into the burger, I quickly realized that one of the two "smash" patties was severely undercooked - we're talking red center. The chef (or line cook?) must have forgotten the smash part. Now, if this is my punishment for ordering a burger at a Mexican spot, my response is: If they can't execute a burger, how will the rest of the menu be? My second response is: If you can't execute a burger, don't put it on the menu. I took off the second patty and ate the rest of the burger. The fries were decent. I did let the server know and asked her to give a heads up to the kitchen and manager. She gave me 10% discount on the $19 burger. I was excited for a new Mexican place downtown, and I root for new restaurants in this economy, but it will be an uphill battle for Luna Roja with a lunch menu touting $15-$18 three-taco plates and $14 guacamole. read more

Service was practically nonexistent. Sure it's Cinco De Mayo, which we allowed for a bit of slow service. However, the management was too busy flirting with chicas at the bar while we sat with empty glasses at our table. Honestly, this place was not that busy to experience such horrible service. Management should be extremely embarrassed. If we noticed their behavior, certainly others did as well. Several tables experienced the same treatment. Perhaps don't focus on your DJ and chicas and pay more attention to your paying customers. Not impressed at all. read more

We made a reservation for (2) at 6:15, and we arrived at 6:10PM and were promptly seated. Will was our server for the evening, and he hit all the service points - great job, Will. The ambiance of the restaurant was festive as I would expect on Cinco De Mayo. The other patrons sitting around me were enjoying themselves, not a sour look in the place. The chips provided were warm, crisp, and sturdy. I did not get the guacamole, but I believe the chip could handle the task. The salsa was excellent. It did not stand a chance between the two of us. The appetizer, Chicharron was generous and full of flavor. The fried pork belly and shrimp chicharron had a great crispy exterior with a tender interior, and the aioli dipping sauce was a great compliment. We had the tacos & taquitos, short rib, pork belly, and sweet potato (taquitos). The presentation was clean and balanced. The short rib taco was perfect.
