What a lovely dining experience following an early movie at @AMCtheaters at the District. We chose to sit in the bar at a high top. White linens kicked it up a notch offering a nifty treat. Our bartender and sever Steve was very engaging! He was Fun, friendly, certainly helpful and poured a mean cocktail. The hubs and I split a small Caesar salad- def plenty for 2. I felt it needed a bit more dressing, but better lightly dressed than over dressed. overall very tasty. Then we split a Neapolitan thin crust sausage pizza. Oooy, gooey, yummy goodness. Again, enough to split and still took 3 pieces home. Nothing like good pizza made with fresh ingredients. Added Parmesan sprinkled on top. Really good! Leave room for a spumoni bomba. Heard on Yelp if you don't make a reservation before coming it'll be hard to get attention from the staff, so we made one. Luckily for us, we got seated right away on a Saturday evening at 7pm. So far, we've seen people come in at the same time as us and have not been seated for 15+ minutes. Brought bread relatively quickly and it's not anything special, but texture is soft/warm! My partner and I opted for: 1. Melanzane Alla Parmigiana (eggplant parm) = 9.5/10 2. Fettuccine Alfredo + black truffles = 9.8/10 The fettuccini was the best alfredo either us of have ever had. The noodles were perfectly cooked and freshly made, and the sauce was the perfect mixture of cream and oil. 100% would recommend adding the black truffle shavings, it really boosted the meal over the top. The eggplant parm... girl... when I gasped after my first bite...speechless. This is usually my go-to item at any italian store, and I have to say this is the best one I've had. The sauce was extremely savory and the dish itself tasted like it had meat because of the amount of flavor. Luna Rossa was a place that was pretty decent for an Italian Restaurant, but nothing over the top or insanely remarkable. Ordered two dishes: Capellini con calamari ($33) and Risotto ai Funghi Porcini ($31). Kind of expensive for what it was, but at least the portion sizes were decent and I had enough to take home for an extra meal. Capellini: The biggest (but not major) issue I had with this was that the ratio of sauce to pasta was somewhat lacking. When the dish was served it looked very presentable and the angel hair pasta looked like it was well incorporated into the sauce, but then after mixing it a bit I realized that almost everything immediately not visible under the first layer of sauce was all pasta, making it less incorporated towards the end. Everything else was great though, good portions of calamari, the sauce itself was great, everything tasted fresh and simple but well executed. Risotto: The better of the two dishes in my opinion. Has a lot of mushroom flavor, the rice was not overcooked and mushy, which tends to be a problem with risotto due to the cream and such. I don't do too well with heavy, creamy food so I wasn't able to get through a lot of it but for people who enjoy it and enjoy mushrooms, it definitely delivers as advertised. Restaurant ambiance is nice, they go for a more homestyle decorated restaurant and it's cute/works well. The biggest plus I had was that the walls are not very echoey, so it makes the restaurant not too loud, a usual quip I have with Italian restaurants in general. I could actually talk at a normal voice and hear the people around me at the table, and opened up for more comfortable conversation and a better experience in general. One negative I had was the singular hostess working the front was in charge of handling reservations, putting people on the waitlist, handling calls for takeout, guiding people to their seats, and even giving water to us. I definitely don't blame her, but as a result of having one person do all the guiding work there was a noticeable delay in the whole experience (coming into the restaurant up until the food comes to your table). Overall, I would recommend Luna Rossa as a good spot for casual conversation and a relaxed and comforting dining experience. read more

I hosted a birthday party for my son at the District today and took the kids, parents and friends and family to Luna Rosa for lunch (20+). The food was delicious, the service was amazing, the ambiance is perfect. This is a legit Italian owned and operated restaurant. They were absolutely lovely, and patient with our wild group of boys. Updating our review after almost a decade later! My husband and I had one of our first dates here at Luna Rossa almost ten years ago and decided to come back for our anniversary. Overall the food was excellent. Everything came out very quickly and was piping hot with great portions. We ordered the chicken piccata and the Bolognese pasta (sub linguine instead of rigatoni). The chicken was tender and well flavored with really unique, crispy potatoes. The pasta was hearty, warm, and had the perfect al dente bite to it. Service was wonderful and they were super attentive. They seemed a bit surprised when I asked for the check a bit earlier (definitely didn't mean to offend them!) since they seem to have a routine of not rushing folks and making sure that their guests have plenty of time to enjoy their beautiful and classy interior. Sat down and when we asked about the special, we were told the waiter said he would check and then he came back and said you can't order those. Said something about menus weren't ready and specials not available until 3 pm so we couldn't order that. Lunch special that only applies after 3 pm? Note food in the specials listed are their normal items on the menu so seems like an excuse to get customers to pay full price who walked in because of the advertising of participating in OC Restaurant week. So I'd avoid and choose a place that at least isn't trying to scam you. Shame because you throw away any chance of a repeat customer as well as other potential customers. read more

It was a quiet weekend at The District in Tustin. The place is decorated with modern Italian design with checkered tablecloths and neatly placed silverware. There was a bunch of people who enjoyed sitting outside because the weather was pleasant. Although we wanted to eat outside, we wouldn't and ended up eating inside. They had a lot of guests who sad outside and couldn't clean it up right away. The servers placed the tables to make it a party of six for my friends and I. We received complimentary bread which was tasty and fitting with the olive oil that was prepped at the table. We wouldn't get enough of the bread and surely, it is deserving of seconds. There was American music from the 70s which was an interesting taste to this restaurant. The dish I ordered was spaghetti pomodrini. I was surprised to see how cheap it was because the portion was very large. I personally couldn't finish the dish myself, but I did find it a bit saltier than I had hoped. I think there should be more basil in this dish, but the spaghetti was chewy and delicious. Oh I wish I had room to try their dessert. The tortellacci I had was super yummy but sadly not filling, even though it was very rich in flavor and mouthfeel. That broth-like white sauce was so chuggable that I wish I could replicate the recipe at home. Allow me to sound a lil pompous to express my first-world problem: I haven't had a satisfying Italian meal since my visit to Italy earlier this year (I know, I know...I'm rolling my eyes at myself after typing that...) ... but that all changed for me last night. The reason for the missing star is simply because the carbonara was too greasy for my taste. Not to mention, the pricing is a bit high. But other than that, I very much loved the soppressata pizza. This is the closest to the pizza I had when I was in Rome. The crust was thin and fluffy and flavorful. It wasn't overloaded with toppings, just the stretchy layer of cheese and thin slices of the cured meat with a lil kick to it. Def coming back for more pizza and skipping the pasta. Service was kind and considerate with some veteran employees that felt like they've been working here for a long time. They definitely suited up to fit the atmosphere of the place to keep that high end atmosphere. Now, in regards to the food. I honestly couldn't decide what to get, but I figured if I'm going to judge this place I should go with the Carbonara instead of trying something unique. So I got that and it looked impressive when it got to me. A good amount of black pepper and nicely chopped cuts of the guanciale. The sauce, which I feel is the best part of carbonara, was disappointing. There wasn't enough cheese and way too much oil or something. It's like there wasn't enough time to mix everything to make the sauce or there was just too much fat/oil since I could see a puddle of it at the bottom of the bowl. If I ever return, definitely will try another dish and hope that is more promising. For the price I paid for that meal, does not seem worth it. Wine was good though. This place had some ok food and some things that were really outdated, flavor-wise. We had the restaurant week prix fixe and picked the caesar salad and the meatball starters. My wife had the lobster ravioli and I had the rigatoni. The meatball was ok, but reminded me of a giant version of the meatballs you get in spaghetti-Os with meatballs. Those taste good too, but this is just the reference for the overall texture and sauce. I liked the Caesar salad, it was pretty big and was well mixed with the dressing. The lobster ravioli was a little mushy in the middle and the rigatoni was in the OK realm, just not really anything special at all. Same with the panna cotta, ok but really just basic. Takeout seems to be more manageable and timely. The Alfredo sauce was nutty, mild, creamy and well seasoned. The noodles were fine too. If I had eaten the food right away, I think I would have enjoyed it more. The kid's size serving is plenty. It is a great option. Similarly, I found the tiramisu good too. Not overly sweet. Well balanced in texture and flavors. It looked pretty on the day of, but I ate mine the next day. Not as pretty on Day 2 but still tasty! I had dinner here the other night and it twas okay. It was rather empty for a Thursday night, however, service was very slow because there were only maybe 2 servers during dinner service. I ordered the rigatoni con salsiccia ($29) which comes with tube pasta sautéed with Italian sausage, mushrooms, and onions in a tomato sauce. I liked that the pasta was al dente, but the flavors were a little lacking. This tasted like something I could make at home and perhaps even better with a little more salt. It tasted like a hurried Tuesday night meal with whatever ingredients you have on hand in the fridge. My friend and I also shared the salamino piccante ($23). The pizza is topped with San Marzano tomato sauce, Grande mozzarella cheese, and imported Italian spicy soppressata. The cheese was terrific - it had a nice cheese pull and tasted overly cheesy. The soppressata, on the hand, was a little odd because each slice of our pizza was adorned with a slice of salami - it looked like a charcuterie slice of pizza. Fantastic little Italian restaurant located right in front of the favorite movie theater in the District of Tustin, CA, is a must go to place for a delicious pizza and any types of lovely Pasta dish fresh from Italy. They have a true Napoli style brick oven baked pizzas and true to form the chewy dough is ridiculously good. The Margherita pizza with extra cheese for $1 more is to die for. I also recommend the spaghetti with meatballs, which comes out with real tomato sauce that will not give you heartburn. I am very sensitive to the marinara sauce and usually can tell if it's made from scratch or from a mass produced grocery brand. This place has handmade tomato marinara that tastes light and clean. The double IPA beer served in cold mugs are $11.50 a pint. It's expensive but good. I definitely recommend happy hour for that one.
