Hadn't eaten here in a very long time. Food used to be excellent. Ordered online for pickup: one Mongolian Beef & one Garlic Bok Choy. Our order was ready on time for pick up. Although everything was fresh, it was completely lacking in flavor and didn't taste AT ALL Chinese. The beef was high quality and tender, but dull, tasteless and veggies were soggy and limp. Bok choy's stems were so tough we couldn't chew them and had ZERO hint of the garlic as advertised. Very disappointing because this used to be my favorite dish. I ended up doing a complete make-over of both dishes at home. Added garlic, ginger, soy, etc., to Bok choy, and cut stems off and simmered them separately to tenderize. To make a long story short, for all the work I had to put into RE-making the food, I should've just made it from scratch myself. I cook FAR better Chinese food than this at home, and I'm not even Chinese! Besides being DULL, it is not good value for the price. We didn't even get rice. Certainly not what Ly Luck it used to be. I love this place! For the price, you cannot get more traditional Chinese than this place! Ly Luck caters to a lot of people, but this place is definitely a "diamond in the rough." (Pun intended since this place is located in the Diamond District of Oakland). I have been eating here since I was knee-high to a duck. Over 10 years. Probably even 15. This place has been a main staple and my family's go-to restaurant. When it's too warm, or too cold, or we're too lazy to cook: "Ly Luck". There does not need to be a verb. Just those two words incite action and almost no complaint. Very, very budget friendly. The owners are very, very friendly. We usually come here for large groups/parties because for very little money, you can feed an army. One of the best things they came out with many years ago is the 3 items for $19.99. Comes with rice and soup, and if you go on Sundays, they have the donhua (tofu flower) dessert. It is much better than just cold cut oranges, trust me! Awesome chinese food here. Don't just order fried rice, chow mein, egg rolls, and sweet and sour orange chicken. There are plenty of better dishes that are usually undiscovered. The salt and pepper pork for example, is bomb. The spinach dish is great too. Combine that with steamed fish (either trout or catfish) and you're good to go to have a filling meal for up to 4 people with some white rice. ^typical chinese meal. 3 dishes for 17 bucks is the deal here. Comes with complimentary soup and dessert. That is a DEAL man. It can be slow here in terms of service and food because there is only a couple waitresses and probably one chef in the back. Stopped by recently for a dinner with the family. Very busy on a Saturday night. Interesting mix in the crowd - parties big and small with a number of ethnicities. Fits the neighborhood. My family has owned a home in the area for almost 40 years and we have seen some good times and some less good (like a number of other neighborhoods in Oakland). Food was solid. Some dishes were very good, some were just ok like the way overcooked crispy skin​ chicken. Service was good considering how busy they were - the young waiter was pretty attentive. The price was very good. One reason I am sure why they were so busy. The reason it only gets 3 stars is we were seated right by the restroom entrance. Every time anyone went in or out, we good a great sniff of bathroom cleaner. Not the most appetizing scent and down a star. Probably 2-1/2 stars overall, but feeling generous on the holiday so rounding up. read more

Review update: Sadly this restaurant gets a rating update. I've experienced better. We went to this restaurant because we have been coming here on non-Chinese New Year days to eat. My mom called 2-3 weeks in advance to reserve a table and WE WERE SAT BY THE KITCHEN. I won't ignore the fact that that they could have moved their to-go table to a different location and moved our table there to give us more space on a night they knew they were going to be busy. We had a table of 12 people, and were told that because we didn't place our order over the phone, that was the table we got. The food was decent. $173 -- 1 crab, 1 lobster, fried rice, fish, steamed chicken with garlic, squab, soup, spareribs, mushrooms with bok choy, and lettuce wrap with meat and hoisin sauce. For a $173 dinner, my family expected more, better service, and better treatment. Our water glasses were empty throughout dinner, when we were right in front of the kitchen. Came here in my search for yee won ton in the 510. Drove up FV from Alameda into the Glenview district. Nice little neighborhood. Street parking place right in front. Came about 2pm on a weekday, place was still pretty crowded but plenty of tables available. Good menu with a a good selection of $5.50-$6.00 lunch specials, But we came for HTYFWT so we both ordered our coveted Hung Tao Yee Foo Won Ton. Bowl comes out, looks good. Egg, meat, veggies, just like its supposed to be. Won tons nice and crispy, good flavor. Score! Nice service. $6 HTYFWT. Will be back whenever the YWT cravings hit. I'm rarely in this area but when I am I usually go to Ly Luck with my family for lunch. Never a problem getting a table and the food comes out pretty fast. Service is fine also. I had the chicken chow fun (gravy style) and the chasu chow mein during my last visit. Both dishes were tasty and tasted pretty typical for an average Chinese restaurant. Overall, prices here was cheap (they have a 3 for $18 menu) and also offer lunch specials on the weekdays. Parking can be tough on this street but it seems people order to go from here alot also. The atmosphere here is pretty out dated (I used to come here as a kid and I swear nothing looks different!) but otherwise the food is still OK. They also have a small party room. This neighborhood restaurant is rock solid with home-style dishes. I especially like that dishes such as the won ton soup or sliced rock cod are loaded with choy sum. Other comfort foods are their house spareribs, mu shu (though prefer tofu), and dry fried green beans with minced pork. As for service, I've always found their service to be brisk and efficient, even during COVID. This is a simple, neighborhood place. 1 star for access - Open on the days you really need food, like Thanksgiving Day when you don't have energy to cook lunch for yourself. Drive down the street to your preferred Chinese place and they are closed. You are feeling barfy because you need food. Now. And LY LUCK IS OPEN! Praise the Lord!!! Bonus 1 point here because the host (Jim) is such a good guy. I heard/saw him help an older lady figure out Uber/Lyft (dunno which one), explained how it works, set I up, then hailed her a ride. And, he was also helping another customer get super-thoughtful take-out handled. Got a huge soup-thermos and layered keep-warm containers sorted out. Jim, you are a STAND-UP GUY. With the Covid pandemic, I have not been there in over 2 years, but decided to try it again. I started going here in 2009 and never stopped going until the pandemic hit. It is closed for indoor dining and is open for takeout only from 11AM-8PM daily and closed every Tuesday. The menu has been revised, but I chose three dishes and was NOT disappointed. The food portions were very generous and the taste was excellent. It passed the hardest food critic in my household, namely my 94 year old mother, who generally only eats Chinese food. This was always my favorite Chinese restaurant...so I thought I'd swing by and pick up food to eat before my four hour online class. My bad. I go there and order a $14.00 dish of salt n pepper shrimp & scallops, beef fried rice and chicken wings. All of it was horrible. In fact, I'm too scared to eat the chicken wings because they look like they been in a fight or maybe its pigeon. The shrimp and scallops was just awful. Not fried or crisp but BAY scallops coated in soggy corn starch, like literally two spoonfuls of bay scallops and four shrimp. The fried rice was old. I'm done with Ly Luck. The portions are huge, and the prices are low, but the meals I've had there were simply not good. Anything that's battered and fried is especially bad (sweet and sour pork and orange sauce chicken, for example). A dish that was billed as "sliced cod with crab meat" consisted almost entirely of a thick coat of breading around tiny pieces of cod. It was all served in a mystery gluey white sauce. If there was any crab meat in that mess, I couldn't find it. Another time I had chow mein that was supposed to contain chicken, beef, and pork. The small and tasteless pieces of meat were in a mountain of slimy noodles. I left most of it over. This place seems to be quite popular, but other than the low prices, the appeal of this restaurant eludes me. read more

I have to give it up for Ly Luck Restaurant. The food is pretty darn affordable. They have a special menu where you can order 3 dishes for $17.25. That is a good deal for a small family. Fortunately for me I have a big family! There were 7 of us today and we said heck. Lets order 6 of these dishes! $34.50 for a dinner that fed 7 of us! That's pretty much where all of the praise for the restaurant ends. The service wasn't too efficient. The food also took a while to come out. Overall the decor was just okay. I should have read previous reviews more carefully before ordering, for example the "shrimp and scallop with vegetable" which contained exactly 3 small shrimps and four miniature bay scallops (almost couldn't find these). The steamed spare rib in black bean sauce was mostly bones and a few tough pieces of meat. It's not the best Chinese restaurant in the East Bay, but its location was convenient (close to the family base) and their prices were very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. A whole Christmas holiday meal for my 8 member family costed us less than $90. We ate well, too. My favorite dish was the double order of Chinese-style lobster. With the Economy the way it is Ly Luck keeps us alive. We should owe our life to this place. Ly Luck has now become by favorite Chinese restaurant in Oakland. ....heck, it is my favorite Chinese restuarant in the Bay Area., I will go one step further, Ly Luck is just my favorite Chinese restaurant period. They serve Chinese food much like you would find only in Chinatown. What do I mean by that? I have noticed that many places outside of Chinatown sort of Americanize their menus. Everything is a modification of a basic garlic sauce. .. you have to try their dry fried Chow Fun, the key here is they charr the incredients with a blistering hot wok so you get the deep wok smokiness flavor. the portions are huge, I eat a lot, but I cannot finish an order of Chow Fun here. The staff is ultra friendly, put it this way, about 3 weeks ago, we were having temperatures in the 90-100s. I came in at around 3pm when the place was empty, visably sweating and hot. The owner saw me and imediately turned on the AC. I got to thinking, I only spent about $9 for my lunch, but it must have cost them $10 to run the AC for the time I was there. UPDATE: 10/08/2009 So as usual, again , as time goes on, my love of a certain place, this time LyLuck begins to fade. .....I decided to get all introspective and ask myself, why does this happen? Is it "ME"? Is this a sign of a bigger committment physcologicalation type thing? Let's look at the evidence. LyLuck has gotten extremely popular in the past year. they have openned a second "banquet" type room which seems to have large parties in almost every day, not just weekends. So in the past 2 months, I must have wasted over $60 on food which I took a few bites and was just underwhelmed and ended up throwing away. So what is happening here?? I think I solved it and good news for me, It is not ME, it is them! They have increased their menu with a Pink specials menu where you can order 3 dishes for $17.25, they also have a Pre-set menu, ...this in addition to their main/generic/standard Chinese menu.........So my love and 5 Star review of Ly Luck back in the day was during their Standard Yellow Menu days, the menu which had all the boring Chinese Standard dishes.....this is where LyLuck really excelled and for the most part still excells. I began trying stuff off their Pink menu and this is pretty much were my disappointment has come in and hence the now 4 Star rating. ....there are just some dishes on the extended menu which don't work. believe me, I have ordered them.......I doubt you have or cared to, but if you checked my prior reviews you would see that I don't care for Deep fried food and in particular Deep Fried Chinese. I just left the restaurant without no tip for the " waitress " the guy who took our order looked upset and was rude ... he provided us with a high chair for the baby and was very unstable we requested a different one and the chair was even worst! !!!!! My kids know how to behave in a restaurant so that was not even the problem... he was super nice to other tables except us... maybe because we are Hispanic and not white?? We ask to have our food in boxes normally they will do it.... I know that I became I was a regular customer from this place. ... this time they left the boxes and disappeared. ... we did it ourselves no problem... but they had a nasty attitude and I am very disappointed since this place used to make me feel welcome and pleasant now was the opposite....
