I got the crispy pork one and my nephew got the brisket one. They looked a bit on the small side when we first got them. I was worried it might not be enough for the big fella, but it ended up being the perfect size! I almost couldn't finish the last two bites and I'm an eater. Lol! We had their passion fruit drink and it was yummy! I did ask for 50% less sugar. I think I could've even done 75% less. (Trying to kick sugar to the curb.) I got a bag of espresso beans that they're carrying right now, starts with an F (threw away the bag already). A local roaster and it is very good. My espresso shots are divine! The guy there said that they change it up, I believe, every few weeks or every month. Something to note, the place is a bit small so if you want to sit and eat, come with just one or two people. I heard this was one of the best breakfast burrito's in east LA and I can see why. This place goes by Milpa Grille on the outside so I thought I was in the wrong place at first, but nope it's Macheen. I ordered two breakfast burritos: one with crispy pork belly and one with brisket. Both were solid. What makes the burrito great is its structural integrity. The flour tortilla is chewy but slightly flaky from being grilled. It's the right thickness that keeps all of its ingredients together: crispy tater tots, soft scrambled eggs, Swiss cheese, and chipotle aioli. It was the perfect size to keep me satiated and I only wish it came with more salsa. Both proteins were good and I'd come back to try the other ones. I ordered an iced vanilla latte to pair with it and for some reason it came very foamy and tasted more chocolate-y in some way? There were some notes of something that was not vanilla. It wasn't bad by any means, but surprising, since vanilla is typically pretty simple. The food came out in 10 minutes after ordering and there were plenty of tables available outdoors. I did a web search for LA's best breakfast burrito and found a Reddit message with people recommending Macheen. Looking at their menu, I couldn't decide which protein I wanted. So, rather than go with a burrito, I opted for 4 breakfast tacos each with a different protein. I chose the pork belly, birria, brisket and longaniza. I could not believe how creamy & wonderful the scrambled eggs were. Clearly the best scrambled eggs I've ever had! The proteins were all quite tasty. The longaniza added a nice bite compared to the relative softness of the rest. The pickled onions added just the right amount of acidity, flavor and crunch. The tortillas were slightly thicker than commercial varieties which added a nice toothiness to the tacos. The restaurant was a quaint little storefront with some counter spaces inside and a small area out next to the street with tables. The place looked very clean and taken care of. The employees were all very friendly and personable. There are only a few street parking spots in front of the building, but from what I saw, they're frequently rotating in and out. There are also some spots around the corner on Mott St. The next time I'm down in the area, I'll certainly return. But, it was also worth the 30-35 minute drive for food that good! read more

This place was worth the hype. I think what sets Macheen apart in the breakfast burrito category is the value, each one costing about $15 including tax. Since it is difficult for us to make a trip out there, I ended up getting multiple meat options with plan to freeze portions of them to enjoy later on a rainy day. We tried the birria and pork belly which both were excellent. The birria was juicy but not in a way that made the rest of the burrito soggy. The pork belly was moist with good flavor, reminding me of Cantonese style roast pork (燒肉). Sauce options: I would lean towards the chipotle aioli to complement these meats. But one SoCal staple combines convenience with pleasure -- the breakfast burrito. Breakfast burritos are never more than a stone's throw away across the Greater Los Angeles area, but one highly recommended spot is Macheen, a breakfast-and-lunch pop-up that operates out of the Milpa Grille in Boyle Heights. The cramped shared space sports various shades of beige, from the vinyl floors to the slatted walls. To the right, the menu is framed next to maize-related collages and other mismatched artwork. On the left, a hand-painted community fridge is pressed up against a cluttered bookshelf. Order from the table-clothed pop-up adjacent to the kitchen counter. Outside, weather-worn wood tables are arranged underneath a canopy-covered street-ery, and contemporary R&B plays from crackling speakers. I arrived at the tail end of the lunch service, and nearly all of the outdoor seats were taken. I jumped in the queue for a Birria Breakfast Burrito, and 15 minutes later I was handed a surprisingly heavy styrofoam takeout container. Although the burrito looked small within my large takeout box, it was dense and heavy. The thin-yet-sturdy flour tortilla was filled evenly with crispy tater tots, fluffy and cheesy scrambled eggs, and flavorful but chewy birria. The flavors were rounded out by rich aioli, sweet and spicy salsa roja, and gently chili-forward salsa verde, culminating in a wholly enjoyable breakfast treat. When I spotted Macheen again during their Sunday Smorgasburg pop-up, I was excited for round 2. This time, I opted for the highly recommended Crispy Pork Belly Burrito. While all of the shared ingredients were as enjoyable as remembered, the "crispy" pork would, unfortunately, more aptly be described as "chewy". The breakfast burritos run just over $13 and offer a tasty if not moderately undersized meal. Admittedly, the pork belly was underwhelming, but I still am eager to give Macheen another go -- whether for a repeat birria burrito again or to mix it up with the breakfast tacos. read more

I've heard of and had this spot on my list of places to go to for a while because of their breakfast items. Specifically, I wanted to try their breakfast burrito and tacos. This place is a small, chill café that also doubles up as a few other places (collectively a restaurant and a coffee place with different names). When you walk in your greeted with friendly people and service, you order at the counter and wait for your food. I ended up getting a birria (braised beef) breakfast burrito and a pork belly breakfast taco. After the first bite, I knew that the entire burrito experience was going to be amazing lol. So much flavor bursting from that braised beef. The taco was not only aesthetically pleasing, but the flavors and textures were all great. This place really does have great breakfast items. Definitely a spot that should be in your rotation. The neighborhood was pretty busy, but I was able to find street parking nearby. read more

Overall, it was a great breakfast burrito. Birria and Longaniza Sausage Tacos were both delicious and decadent. The colors and presentation of the tacos were quite lovely. It was beautiful to look at and delicious to eat. The Longaniza Sausage was a bit difficult to eat as it is a soft sausage and the taco fell apart quite easily. It was very good nevertheless. The winner was Birria. The Birria was most delicious thing that I ate at Macheen. I would definitely eat everything again, but I really would love to go back and try other things on the menu. I really want to take my family here to share this delicious food with them. I'm curious about making how good the breakfast burrito would be with Birria as the protein. The staff is beyond considerate (unprompted, remade a coffee for my friend because they felt the next batch was "more balanced"), the menu is imaginative and well executed, and the soundscape keeps things cozy (the kitchen sounds, the soft music, the patrons and sociable workers). Macheen is bomb. There's no sign on the building outside saying Macheen which threw me off at first but it is in Milpa Kitchen! You may see a standing sign that advertises breakfast burritos and if so you're at the right spot :) I had to do a double take lol. Going in the menu is on the wall. I came to try the breakfast burritos so I got the birria breakfast burrito. It was hot and ready! Came out literally in less than 5 minutes, I was shook. It also hit the spot! Solid breakfast burrito that is super filling, tortilla is definitely the highlight, fresh and soft! I also got the iced cafe de olla with cold foam upon recommendation and while a little on the sweet side, it's delicious! Definitely nice if you're looking for a little treat with your coffee this morning. Overall parking is plentiful, but metered. You can try to snag free parking in the neighborhood as well but it would probably be a bit harder, though not impossible. read more

So, Macheen is Milpa Grille and Milpa Grille is Macheen? Either way, I left a review years ago about Milpa Grille. I guess they have a new chef/cook cuz the last few times I ordered take out, the burrito was filled with grease. I ordered the Birria burrito and esquite and the burrito was just spice l, burnt meat, and grease and the esquite wasn't even cooked well or separated properly. But, I gave it another chance since everyone has a bad day. My recent order was the beef brisket burrito, pork taco, and esquite. The grease from that brisket was so bad, it covered the tortilla and I had to wipe it down with a napkin. All I tasted was meat grease and greasy eggs, nasty. The pork taco was good, but not as crisp as it used to be, but edible. The esquite was perfectly made this time and I was happy for that since this is a favorite of mine. However, that greasy brisket had my stomach hurting until the next night. I couldn't eat anything the next day due to an upset stomach. Definitely a new cook in the kitchen or someone who no longer cares. The quality is not the same and once causes me to get sick, I don't go back ever. Milpa Grille/Macheen, it was a good run. I wish you well and best of luck in the future. Change your chef or talk to him/her/they about the downfalls of a greasy wet burrito. Check. 2) Delicious protein? Check. That pork belly is divine - it melts in your mouth and the outside edges have a delectable crisp. 3) Well-cooked eggs with cheese that doesn't overpower the rest of the ingredients? Check. 4) Delicious salsa or sauce? Yes, the chipotle aioli is rich, creamy, and has a bit of a kick. Perfect. 5) Potatoes that have flavor and have a texture that compliments the rest of the burrito (either something crispy like hash browns or rich semi-mashed Spanish potatoes? Ehhh... the tater tots in this burrito go soft really quickly and I feel like they need to be fried extra crispy to be good. Otherwise I'm not sure why you would want them in there. Don't get me wrong, I really love tater tots! But only if they're crispy and these... are not. Still, Macheen makes one of my favorite breakfast burritos ever because the rest of it is just THAT good. Seating is available at Milpa Grille but it often gets taken up quickly and it takes time for them to make your food (10 min or so, but they can get backed up from other orders) so I suggest calling up ahead of time for pick up. read more

My favorite breakfast burrito in LA. Many are great, the ones here are amazing. There are details here and there that elevate it to the next level. Usually get the birria and pork belly burritos which are delicious. Combined with crispy tater tots and creamy eggs inside, they have a good mix of textures and flavors. Recently tried the birria and brisket breakfast tacos too... same delicious meat and eggs, but the in-house flour tortillas they come on are the best I've ever had! I dont know how they do it but they are sooo good. All the drinks I've tried have been great too (berry jamaica, lavender horchata espresso are some examples). This place was amazing! I had heard about it from the top LA restaurants list and was itching to try. The breakfast burrito with brussels was INCREDIBLE. The tortilla was very light. The Brussels were grilled perfectly and so flavorful, and the eggs and tots inside were made to the ideal consistency. Slightly runny eggs coated in velvety cheese, paired with crispy potato's and protein of your choice (I chose pork belly). And of course wrapped in a fresh chewy stretchy tortilla. As others mentioned, the burrito isn't huge but will probably fill you up nicely. The burrito is the perfect size and I would not recommend sharing! The first thing I noticed was the cheesy fluffy eggs- cooked to perfection.
