Pretty busy local diner. Luckily we ordered our food to go. Staff was friendly and my food was waiting for me after just 10 minutes. 3 breakfast sandwiches with crispy hash browns. Mine was ham, over easy egg, and cheddar cheese on an english muffin. The egg was perfectly cooked and the ham off the bone was so tender and flavorful without being too salty. My daughter's sandwich had tasty sausage in it, but she was surprised that they used links instead of a patty. The hubby ordered a bacon egg and cheese sandwich on white. Bacon was crispy (not chewy) and delicious. Ask for the house made salsa - it's got a nice kick! Overall a very good first impression. Looking forward to dining in next time. This was a very short drive from our hotel and other Yelpers gave it a thumbs up, so naturally my co-coworker and I HAD to try it! It has a down-home, village feel to it, even though it's close to the busiest airport in the Midwest! Like an ideal mate, the menu has a nice variety of options without being overbearing. I went with the warm turkey sandwich, which came with mashed potatoes and cranberry sauced, served open-faced. The sauce was nothing special, but the other elements of the plate were great and I would recommend them. It also included a cup of split pea and ham soup, which was ALMOST as good as my mom's. So that's really saying something! Service was also good, and the parking lot made getting in and out very convenient. But in the year 2020, I can't give five stars to any establishment that doesn't accept credit cards. You can spout all of the reasons you want, it's just inconvenient for those of us that don't carry cash and I can't bestow that honor upon a place that isn't accommodating in that regard. But still, empty your cup holders and couch cushions and get on down to Mac's! read more

A fantastic little diner that feels like home. Eggs Benedict had impressive hollandaise sauce that was not lemony or metallic tasting. Instead, it was buttery and delightful on top of the perfectly poached eggs. Hash browns were browned well. Delightful. We watched the cooks make our food. They were a well-oiled machine. The cooks even pat grease off bacon so they would continue to crisp. Also, it is not too often you go into a business (especially in Chicago/NWI) and are greeted with genuine kindness. This is the quintessential American diner! Don't be fooled by the exterior. There's a reason they say never judge a book by its cover. Once you step through the front door, you are immediately greeted with a hearty "Hello and welcome!" I'm assuming the big, bellowing, booming voice belongs to Mac himself, but not 100% sure. Seating is one long counter with swivel stools, which offers prime viewing of the grill and cooks working their magic and one bank of booths. The place is utterly charming and equally spotless, shiny and clean. No diner grease in this gem! Equally as welcoming was our waitress. Can't say enough about the service. And the food lived up to and exceeded all expectations. I am a sucker for crispy breakfast potatoes/ hash browns and they know EXACTLY how to get these wafer thin potatoes perfectly browned and crispy. Not a speck of soggy grease. Went with the egg sandwich on a bagel with their in-house sliced bone-in ham (I'm drooling as I'm writing this!) and a slice of American cheese! Split a short stack of pecan French toast with my friend (a wonderful recommendation from our waitress). It was busy when we went but we got a table right away. Our server was very sweet and made sure we we're good. All of them were smiling and gave us an awesome treatment. If I was on death row I'd be requesting my Mac's breakfast (eggs over easy, hashbrowns and bacon extra well done, homemade salsa and big Icy Coke) as my last meal. Went there over weekend and it was our first time . When you go there bring your appetite and cash they don't take credit card. It's old school and love it. The service is over the top. Our waitress was not that fake "how are things ?" She really cared and recommended several things on the menu. I got the corn beef hash skillet and eggs over easy. The eggs were just a bit over but still good. Big portions and coffee just kept coming . The manager checked on us several times making sure everything was good and didn't need anything. This Diner made me feel nostalgic for the one back in my home town in PA. Very friendly/folksy service. We came into Chicago super early on a red eye and Mac's was open and gave us one heck of a a breakfast. We tried several of the recommended dishes and as the dad, I "taxed" everyone's plate. My son's French toast yummy. My daughters pancakes were "old school" and delicious. I hate eggs and yet my wife's Eggs Benedict (I was feeling adventurous) did not turn me off. I usually get more enjoyment from taking off others plates, so I honestly don't remember what I ordered but I know I left feeling good about everything I tried. My brother lives in Chicago and I'd go back to this place. Seriously people... In a world full of boring, cookie cutter chains like Denny's and IHOP,we need more diners like Mac's.
