Wish i could give these a negative star. Dropped my car off there because they are a preferred AAA service facility. They called and said the diagnostic fee was $239 to check the battery because the car wasn't starting. NTB diagnostic fee is $0. Would have taken it to NTB if i knew ahead of time the fee was so damn ridiculous. Now i have to get the car towed to NTB to get the battery changed because i refuse to give these crooks another dime. Then Mike lies and says he told me the fee before they looked at the car. Had a great experience with Mac's service center. My wife's explorer was driving rough and we were worried it was the transmission. Luckily it was still under warranty. After doing some research, we found out that Mac's would honor the warranty. Mac's found out in fact it was the the transmission and began the process with ordering a new transmission and working with the warranty company. It was a very painless process, they were very transparent with the diagnosis and scheduling when the work would be complete. Usually warranty companies are painful to deal with but Mac's took care of all the details. They did a fantastic job on our explorer. Thank you Mac's service center! read more

I had to get the state inspection done on my car ASAP as it was past due. Found Mac's Service Center through Yelp & Jim answered my call on Sat morning courteously whom advised me to bring my car in before their closing time at 2 pm. Brought my car in & it was serviced right away, which took about 40-45 minutes. When I got into my car, I was pleasantly surprised it was vacuumed clean. I no longer live in Ashland, but I saw these guys a lot while I was there since I have an older car. Everyone is very friendly and they were always realistic when giving advice by citing honest quotes/ranges and how urgent a repair or replacement would be if needed. If it will be a few days, they have loaner cars so you still have something to drive while yours is in the shop. They stand by their work too. Once I had an expensive part replaced on my car and soon after, I smelled burning oil and heard an unusual noise. I brought my car back and upon inspection, they reinstalled the part free of charge (including labor). It meant a lot to me that they were so honest. So, if you need any work/maintenance done on your car, I recommend you drive, tow, or push your car up to Mac's. read more

Took my 15 year old car in for an overdue service, and to have them finish the installation of a backup camera. They were thorough and helpful, pointing out things that will need to be repaired in the future, not trying to pressure me into work that could be postponed. The man who installed the backup camera asked me where I wanted the camera placed, and took the extra time to offer to, then hide the wires. They cleaned the car, as well. It has not run so well, or looked so good in a long time. I am a new customer, will be returning. read more

I was overdue, so I took it to Mac's rather than my friends shop on the other side of town. Not only did they drive me and my daughter to my friends house to wait while the car was being worked on, they called and picked me up when it was finished and had cleaned my car for free!? Who does this stuff anymore?! Mac's does! Also, the shop is always clean, the staff there is super friendly and their gas prices are competitive. Ok for starters if I could give Mac's 100 stars I would!! I guess you're wondering why a guy from NJ is reviewing a auto repair shop in Va. Well it was that time of year where I loaded up the family in the family truckster to head south to the sunny beaches of Florida (read my other reviews). As we entered Va we hit the usual 95 traffic (ugh) and then that's when it happened, black smoke, bad oder and crazy noises. We limped down 95 to the next off ramp and my daughter googled local places. Lucky for us Mac's was just down the street. We pulled in to the lot and walked in. We were greeted with a big smile and a friendly hello. I explained our dilemma and all the employees were more than understanding. After quickly diagnosing the problem we were told it would take 2 hours to fix. (Now remember, I'm from Jersey. In jersey a diagnoses would have taken 2 hours and we probably wouldn't have gotten our car back for days). We walked down the street to the local tea & coffee shop and had breakfast. After about an hour we returned to Mac's and chatted with Jim who is the friendliest person. The wait wasn't that long and our car was fixed in amazing time. I never got the name of the technician who fixed are car but I have to give him credit for an unbelievable job. The office at Mac's was unbelievably clean and neat. The technicians were all neatly dressed. I couldn't believe the technician just did major brake surgery on my car and didn't have a spot of grease or grime on his uniform. Another amazing aspect was the 3 year warranty that was included. You're probably thinking 'Oh you're in jersey and they're in Va." Well Mac's warranty is even good in Jersey. If I experience a problem all I have to do is call Mac's and they will provide me with a location in Jersey to honor the warranty. The employees at Mac's saved our family vacation. Just simply a magical experience at Mac's. If it were reasonable to drive 300 miles for auto service I would make Mac's my first choice for auto repair. I just picked my car up from my first visit, and I am so pleased! I set up an appointment for inspection at the end of the month, and they were very accommodating. I work in Ashland, so the shuttle was an extra nice perk. To be able to drop by car off before work, and not have to find an alternative way in was such a relief. When I picked up my car after the service was complete, I was surprised to find my car vacuumed and the interior surfaces and glass sparkling clean. The staff is courteous and polite. They did not try to push anything unneeded on me, like I have experienced at other shops, and everything was handled in a professional manner. Went to get my car inspected and told me that I needed over a grand and a half worth of repairs. I found this to be ridiculous considering one of the things was a turning signal light bulb. Ended up taking it to another inspection station, that I value and trust, and it cost me 730 including the price for the inspection. All of the repairs I "needed" were done for a fraction of the cost. Saved over 700 dollars by not going here. Don't waste your time at this place and head over Duffy's. read more

I put my car in for service and I was very happy with every aspect of the service. On the way to college on Friday August 16th my daughter had a mishap in Ashland, VA and I received a frantic call from her about what to do. I immediately looked for a AAA garage in the area and Mac's came up. It was almost closing time so I called and spoke to Charles and explained the situation. Charles gave me a lot of confidence that we chose the correct garage, we had the car towed by a AAA tow truck to Mac's after closing time. I spoke to Charles on Saturday morning and he informed that they were very busy and would try and look at the car as soon as they could. I told Charles not to rush, as at this point I had no need of a quick repair since we were able to get to get my daughter to school. Charles called in the early Saturday afternoon to say that they were able to look at the car and get the needed parts on order. I emphasized to Charles that there was no rush for the repair, and that I was much more concerned that they take their time to be sure that everything was covered properly, and at that point he gave me a rough estimate which sounded fair. Tuesday morning I received a call from Charles saying that the repair was done and everything checked out. Charles and his crew exceeded what I have come to expect from a AAA garage. Charles kept me informed every step of the way, and I am thankful that we found Mac's service center! Excellent experience with Mac's! read more

I decided to use Mac's Service Center in order to get a simple oil change and check up on the car. This alone should have been around $60 with tax. However, when i show up to pick up the bill (which i was told would be $57) it was not even close. They charged me $470!!!!! I asked why the price had changed drastically and i was given a stern "we always call before doing work". Work?!?!? They had changed the air filters, fuel induction kit, and changed my AC coolant on a car with 30,000 miles!!! I am a college student, i do not have that much money to spare. Needless to say, i was very upset when i found out that the shop had done repairs without getting ANY AUTHORIZATION. read more

When I moved to Caroline County, I dreaded having to look for a new mechanic. As a 24 year old female with very limited car knowledge, as stereotypical as that is, I'm always afraid of getting taken for all I'm worth - which, quite frankly, isn't much at this point. I truly can't afford to be paying for repairs that are both unnecessary and expensive, which you often end up doing at a place like Merchant's. After doing some shopping, I came across Mac's and they had great reviews. From the first time I took my car in, I felt well taken care of and spoken to frankly, instead of being talked down to. Often, they can take pictures of what is wrong in your car and show them to you so you understand what's going on. Mac and his staff are very aware of my tight finances, and do all they can to make sure I can afford any repairs that are necessary - they often send coupons in the mail, will waive labor fees, and are very good about helping me distinguish what is absolutely necessary to keep my car on the road and what can wait until I can afford it. They've always been great and very personable, and remember who I am as soon as I call. Even though my car is just a $3000 1999 Civic, they treat it like it's as important as the most expensive hybrid they see. I truly appreciate that, because even though it's a cheap little car, it's my lifeline. They're also wonderful about either giving me a ride someplace, or letting me use a loaner car free of charge - they even offered to let me use one for something as minor as an oil change! I can't say enough good things about these guys, and would highly recommend their services as trustworthy and always top-notch to anyone. And to the reviewer who complained about it costing a fortune: yes, the services there are often more pricy than what you would get at a Merchant's Tire or your next door neighbor's shop run out of his home garage. However, I can truly say that you get what you pay for, and that they are very good about working with you - I've never had a single problem with any of the repairs they have done, and to me, the slightly higher price is absolutely worth feeling well taken care of and having 100% trust in the shop. read more

Lets face it as a consumer we have a mind of dread when it comes to car repair and I dont care if its as simple as a inspection sticker to a major overhaul. Because in opportunity or several, someone has priced gauged us on auto repair. I am happy to say that I had a very pleasant experience at this service center. Not only did they clearly explain what was wrong with my car versus the ( other service centers I took it too), they supplied me with a service car and had my car back to me the next day. Did I add that my car was cleaned inside and out. Just to do another comparison their prices were less than the dealership and right inline with other service centers without all the other benefits. Super service! I received a faulty airbag diagnosis from VW dealer, $1,200 for new airbag control module. Mac suggested they run a diagnosis. Mac's Service Center discovered the problem as a loose wire under the passenger seat. Mac's saved me $1,000. Earned my trust and demonstrated they are truly competent mechanics. They drive me home/pick me up and wash my car. They will have my continued auto service business and support as long as I drive a car. read more

I was very nervous about coming to a new auto mechanic but everyone was super courteous and helpful. The owners came out and spoke with me and went over everything in detail. Their customer service was superb and you can tell that they cared. I have had very few experiences where I will take the time to write an review this was the exception. I feel that they deserve recognition for the extra mile that they give. Not only did my car come back fixed, but they had cleaned the inside and washed the outside. No one does that any where that I know off. They were willing to work with my husband and I and took the time to explain what was going on. Mac's tries to appear like a great place to take your car with its throwback to "great service" (their words, not mine); they also offer the convenience of scheduling appointments online, etc. The convenience stops there. Their staff is not kind-they are often rude and short when trying to discuss what's going on with your car, and they tried to scare me-as a single woman-into replacing my timing belt and water pump right there on the spot for $1,000 when I took my car to get inspected over the summer. They were very forceful trying to get me to agree to the repairs on the spot; telling me that I shouldn't even drive my car off the lot. I declined having the work done, after worrying that they were trying to take advantage of me. I took my car to another garage and had them look at my timing belt and was told that not only can I wait about 15,000 miles before needing to replace it, but, with parts and labor, it would cost between $350-400. I would highly discourage anyone from going to Mac's. Don't be lured in by their convenient location in Ashland, their online services, or the "coupons" they send out via email to save on their already way overpriced services. It doesn't make up for the rude, unkind staff and the way they rip people off. read more

I won't detail the repairs except to tell you they were as professional as it gets, and I didn't have to take out a second mortgage on my home to pay for them. I am writing this review after a recent experience I had with this service center. My daughter recently graduated from college and is driving a 2005 Toyota Prius. It was my car since 2005 and I've had virtually minor issues with it. My daughter called me last week and told me the dashboard had several warning lights come on no the car was acting odd. I told her to take it to the local dealer in Richmond for an assessment. BIG MISTAKE. Their assessment was that the main battery needed to be replaced for a cost of $3000. I felt unconfortable since I lived 2.5 hours away and was concerned they might be trying to take advantage of my daughter. Without going into details, the service at the dealer was poor at best. We came across Mac's online and read several positive reviews. After speaking with Mac several times I had a gut feeling he was an honest business owner. He assessed her car and informed us the main battery was still in good shape but suggested doing several preventative maintenance services on the car. We did. When she picked the car up it ran fine until she got it home. The lights came back on and Mac's actually drove to my daughter's apartment on a Sunday afternoon to meet us. (I just happened to be visiting.) He checked it out and stood behind his work. Because the dealer cleared the codes, there was an issue with the battery sensor. Mac gave my daughter a free loaner car and worked on her car again (free of charge) correcting the issue. He detailed the car top to bottom and restored her headlight covers back to what they looked like brand new. He also topped off her A/C unit due to a very slow leak. All I can say is that Mac runs an honest business and Stivers to establish a long term relationship with his customers. It is refreshing to know there are still honest hardworking people in the world. Thanks Mac for helping my daughter. I go to Randolph-Macon College and I took my car there to have a state inspection done. It was rejected for the left lower ball joint and also recommended that I have my right cv axle replaced. The bill was almost 800 dollars so I drove it home to the mechanic I normally use to get a second opinion. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the ball joint that they rejected my car for and the right cv axle did need to be replaced but cost me a fourth of what they were asking. Do NOT go to Mac's they are not honest and will try to rip you off. read more

I would stay clear of these guys, I went for a state inspection and got taken. They replaced my wipers with inferior quality blades, replaced a bulb that worked and suggested repairs that were not needed. I know the bulb was good because on my Mercedes the lights are all tested when the car is turned on and the dash tells which light is malfunctioning. They said valve cover gaskets the said needed to be replaced was an incorrect diagnoses it was a breather valve above the engine that was leaking. The valve cover gaskets were replaced just recently and I knew they were not the problem. Lesson don't take your car to these guys and don't wait until the last day of the month for state inspection. read more

I agree with my daughter Olivia V. she was ripped off by them telling her the ball joint was bad and rejecting her car. Also they indicated the CV joint boot was bad and needed replacing for a total cost of around to $800.00. When you go on line and look at parts the ball joint if bad cost around $45.00 and the CV Joint is around $117.00. She called the State Trooper who looked at the ball joint and said it was like new. The trooper is going to see Mac. I would never use Mac and highly do not recommend him to anyone. read more

A couple of weeks ago my girlfriends and I were driving from Chicago to the Outer Banks. Just out of Richmond we encountered car trouble with the car not responding at all. All our dreams of the beach were quickly fading away. We called the Nissan dealership which was actually not very helpful As it was about 6 and they were ready to close. We googled the closest service station and found Macs about 11 miles away. We called, spoke with Jim who assured us they would wait. We put the car in low and grim knuckles on the steering wheel we slowly headed down the road, overjoyed when we made it. Jim and Mac jumped into action. Within the hour we were back on the road with the car running better than ever. And, Jim called the next day to make sure we made it. The great service and caring attitude was incredible. Thanks to the two of them we had our toes in the sand that very night. What could have been a disaster became a story we repeat, amazed at the kindness of Macs service station.
