I'm the type of individual that tries to give the small business a chance before going to a chain franchise for food. Had one person suggest IHOP day before. Nothing against chain. But with the current situation with COVID, some these small business eating locations are having a challenge to have people eat there. Rather give this location a chance. Have a not so good meal? I have been coming to this cafe for years now and it is my go-to breakfast/brunch place for friends or family from out of town. It has not once let me down. The portions are huge and satisfying, the flavors divine, the staff is friendly, and the service is fast. The only downside is that on weekends the lines can get a bit long, but Saturdays are better than Sundays, and it's better to go later in the day than earlier (for example, we went around 1:30 pm this past Saturday and there was barely a wait). I would also say that for parties of 4 or more, you might want to call ahead -- the cafe is small and I've only seen parties of 6 at the most for brunch. They can certainly accommodate larger groups, but would definitely need advance notice. My boyfriend's favorite is the Hungry Man, which comes with two eggs cooked however you want, ham, bacon, sausages, home fries, toast, and a side of pancakes or french toast (my boyfriend gets the banana pancakes, which are made with real mashed bananas, fluffy, and amazing). I have gotten pretty much everything on the menu, but the corned beef hash, the lobster benedict, and the crunchy french toast are standouts. The lobster benedict in particular is a steal - I've never seen that much fresh lobster for $12! The lunch food is also fantastic - the cuban and the burger are both amazing. This is not a fancy brunch place, nor does it pretend to be. If you're looking for fantastic breakfast/brunch food with great portions, however, this place is the BEST. read more

I wish someone would post on this page before I went in so here it is. They stopped serving breakfast items after 3 PM and whatever you do,DO NOT order the steak tips!!!!!! Unless you are a huge fan of Lays salt and vinegar,you probably will like steak tips version of it. They were extremely vinegarly, like someone dropped the whole bottle in the marinade bucket. The place was literally empty on the weekend at 7 PM ,maybe because of Covid as well. I didn't think they were even open since I was the only car in the lot and one of 3 tables in there. Service was impeccable!!!! I was there for an hour and not a single table came in after me,none, which is good for me the less people the better. I will go back though before 3 pm to try thier breakfast and hopefully I will be able to enjoy the meal. read more

Boston is quickly becoming my absolute favorite place to visit for business. For whatever reason, the clients I visit there seem to be kindred spirits of mine as far as mentality, so I was naturally pretty excited when they picked me up and informed me they were taking me to a "local joint" for breakfast. The Mad Hatter is so small if you blink you will miss it, but the parking lot was sure jam packed at 8 AM when we stopped in for breakfast. We literally had to wait there for several minutes until somebody left before we could pull in. The inside is about as rustic and old school Boston as you can possibly imagine, with an Irish theme that is about as subtle as being kicked in the nuts with a steel toed boot. The place is unapologetic in it's execution of the old school, and it would not surprise me in the least if my experience here would of been identical if it had taken place in 1985. There were 2 servers covering the probably 25 or so tables jammed into this tiny location, and they worked the room with military precision. They also both spoke in a very heavy Gaelic/Boston accent that was somewhat similar to how Brad Pitt's character sounded in the movie "Snatch". Not gonna lie, I found the accent on these girls insanely hot. Menu here is fairly vast, especially for such a small joint, but the "Irish breakfast", ordered by everyone but me, is featured prominently on page one and is clearly an area of emphasis. It looked about like an "English breakfast" best I could tell, though I am sure there are subtle differences. I decided instead to go with the corned beef hash with eggs, as it is a personal fav of mine. Ordering hash is about like ordering meatloaf when you are out and about as it is a total dice roll. However, I am happy to report the hash here was fantastic. They seared the outside prior to serving so it had a bit of crispiness to it and the flavor was out of this world. I devoured it in short order. I will undoubtedly be back in Boston as some point in the near future and will with 100% certainty return to this place for breakfast. Went here for a brunch buffet. There was a mountain of bacon in the serving tray, daring me to take as much as possible. The eggs were scrambled perfectly and were not too dry. The prime rib was the way I like it. When I asked for a larger slice the carver helped me out with a thick slab of meat. The salmon lox and cocktail shrimps are a nice touch as well. Coffee and juice was included in my buffet price. Bloody Mary had good spice but still very drinkable, no stupid garish bullshit. I found out about this restaurant from a friend about a year ago and I wish I found out sooner. The service has always been A+ and food has never failed me. The portions here are more than enough to satisfy a hungry appetite. I most recently has a meat lovers omelette and when it came out, it was loaded with all types of meat. Usually when you get an omelette from anywhere else, the ratio seems to be more egg than the other Ingredients. I have always been a fan of mad hatter. Their breakfast is by far the best in town. I am a fan of their bacon egg and cheese sandwiches and usually order them for takeout. But now they have dinner?! Just went out to their new location with my fiance and it was pretty good. I was too excited for breakfast so instead of getting dinner, I got an omelette with cheese and bacon (came with toast and home fries). We also had an app of potato pancakes that were filled with scallions and cheese! They actually didnt let me leave room for dinner! Absolutely delicious! I cant wait to go back and try their dinner options, there was a good amount to choose from. The place looks great and the staff was very friendly per usual. I've been to this place several times with different people. Each time there was no disappointment with food or service. I enjoy their cornbeef hash the best. have also tried their lobster egg benedict and it was pretty good too. the veggie omelet is also very tasty and big portion. some have complained that it's not really an omelet since it's it's not covered but it's almost scrambled eggs with veggies which is kinda true. wished they either add more egg to cover it or perhaps less veggies? will definitely come back to try other items. read more

The Mad Hatter cafe is my regular spot for breakfast when I have a rare day off. Don't be fooled by what may at first glance appear to be an average size menu, because they balance it with a healthy dose of delicious daily specials and fresh smoothies. Not to mention I suspect they'll accommodate any reasonable request. The food has been consistently fresh and delicious on each of my many visits, and the waitstaff courteous and attentive. On my last visit I had the shaved steak omelet (special). When I was had finished cleaning my plate, I let out a heavy sigh knowing that it would probably be quite some time before I could get back here to consume another. I suspect the gentlemen manning the (open) kitchen to be the owner of this establishment from the obvious care he takes in crafting each plate. The only downside to the Mad Hatter Cafe is the small size of its dining room and often full parking lot. If you don't mind waiting for a table to open up (there's a small waiting area outside) you're taste buds will quite grateful that you did. Now I see what all the fuss is about. I had the strawberry pancakes, which were phenomenal. It's a generous order at four pancakes, and they are fluffy and light and crisp. Just wonderful. We were also very happy with the homemade corned beef hash, which actually tastes like corned beef. The service deserves special mention as well. They were quick with the coffee refills which I always appreciate. I was very pleasantly surprised that they offer a variety of flavored iced coffees. Love this place! My husband, children, and I really liked the food here, especially me. We ordered a bunch of things to try: Crab Cake Benedict, Lobster Benedict, Mad Hatter Delight (corned beef hash inside a pastry with a yummy sauce on top of it...my favorite), bread pudding, and the crunchy French toast. They were all so delicious. They give good portions too. We had leftovers, and we can eat. Definitely ask what their specials are for the day because their specials vary. We brought the food home and it was still good. I imagine it would have been even better if we ate the food there. Maybe next time...definitely coming back and recommending this place to our friends and family. read more

My first brunch at sub urban Boston was not the best. Food - I had the quiche with coleslaw. Quiche had a good crusty texture, but the coleslaw was extremely dry. No big deal though because they have a perfect little coffee window, so we got our caffeine on while we waited. There are only about 15 or so tables in the place so I would imagine you should always anticipate a bit of a wait. TOTALLY WORTH IT THOUGH. I would have tried everything in the menu if I could, but we decided on the French toast, home made corned beef hash with scrambled eggs and home made soda bread, and the breakfast burger. Mad Hatter, more like Sad Chatter. I'll start by saying that I'm pretty lenient when it comes to cutting servers a break, and usually won't give a bad review just based off of service issues, especially if the food reflects redeeming quality. However, our young server was an absolute space cadet. I'm sure she will be successful in some other career one day, but service is not her forte. We never got any silverware, so when she handed us our coffee, sugar, and milk - we had nothing to stir. She forgot our orange juices too; so we sat there waiting for her to pass by again to ask for spoons and juice but she never came back. We had to ask another server to find her. Then when it was time to refill the coffees she took our cups with the spoons in them and we, again, had nothing to stir with. By now, we had been waiting so long my boyfriend took two cigarette breaks and a bathroom break. We finally decided to ask someone how much longer on our food; turns out our waitress "went on break" and we had a new server? I'm guessing our order never went in because they asked us what we ordered and we still sat waiting for another 25 minutes. When the food came the plates came 3 min apart so I was picking from my boyfriends plate while waiting. The new waitress never asked if there was anything else we needed, or how everything was (pretty standard server follow up questions, especially when you're taking over for another waitress). If she had asked we would've let her know that literally everything was cooked wrong and tasted terrible. This was the most disappointing part of our experience. I can forget how crappy the service is if I'm chewing on a juicy hunk of bacon and/or savoring a flavorful bite of breakfast eggs - but nope! The bacon was so hard it couldn't be chewed, the hash had a sour flavor I couldn't describe, the scrambled eggs were rubber, poached eggs were rubber and cooked solid, the toast tasted stale and freezer burnt. By now we knew we would never come back to this breakfast buzzkill again; So we found a nearby server and explained that everything was so terrible we couldn't even eat it and certainly weren't gonna pay for it. They apologized and set us free. Definitely won't be back. Legend has it the first waitress is still on a break to this day. read more

Very disappointing service. We waited 45 minutes for our food after ordering. 3 tables around us (seated after us) were served before us. When I finally flagged down the waitress she was apologetic and said the kitchen lost the ticket. Food finally arrived and was very good. Our meal was comped which made me want to try the Mad Hatter again. Two weeks later, the exact same thing happened. 45 minute wait for food. (This time I found the waitress, who told me the ticket got lost). Meal was comped. Food was good but the aggravation of waiting while others are served around me is not worth eating here. Large breakfast portions, friendly staffs, clean. There's a small parking lot on the side for a small cafe. They accept credit cards. I've been wanting to try this place for at least a year and finally had the chance a few months ago when I randomly woke up at 6 in the morning and nothing to do. My significant other and I decided to head down to Mad Hatter Cafe and luckily, there was no wait. I'm glad we did because we actually like this nice and cozy cafe for breakfast. We haven't been here during their busy time but we drove pass this place a lot after 9 and their parking situation is no fun.
