This is a place for a special treat. This is our go to special place. And it keeps getting better and better. Do yourself a favor and go there. If this place was in SF the price would be more. And get the caviar on the slow cooked egg...... Wish I could have this for breakfast every day. And eat a light breakfast and lunch. Lovely restaurant, quiet, a little hideaway off of Sir Frances Drake Blvd. It was a super hot day and the restaurant was so inviting from the heat. We went straight for the tasting menu and wine flight. Everything was delicious - my only "complaint" is the courses came pretty quickly it felt unintentionally rushed. Service by Jimmy was superb, beautiful wines and warm atmosphere. Now that I know what the Rabbit Tortelloni tastes like I'll be going back. And the clam shot too! My husband and I celebrated his birthday at Madcap last weekend. We are foodies and were really looking forward to this meal. The good: I will start off by saying the food was delicious, innovative, and well-executed. The bad: The service was horrendous. We arrived on time for our reservation and were told the table would be ready in ~10 minutes and were escorted to the bar. We were planning on getting wine pairings and did not really want to drink anything else, but it was clear we would not be seated any time soon so we ordered some sparkling wine. 15 minutes passed and they asked us if we would like to start our meal at the bar. As it was my husband's birthday, we said we were in no rush and would prefer to start our meal when we were seated at our table (which I reserved a month in advance). We were finally seated 10 minutes later (~25 minutes after our reservation) and our first course was set on the table immediately. As soon as we finished the first course, the second course was put on the table, before the wine was served. This happened again with the third course. At this point, we had been eating for ~15 minutes and were three courses in with ~3 half empty wine glasses sitting in front of us because we could not keep up. It became very apparent they were trying to rush us along, not give us the courtesy of the ~3 hours other reviewers have mentioned it takes to get through the tasting menu. We finished our tasting menu in about an hour and looked up to realize there were many empty tables in the restaurant, so I'm not sure why they were in such a rush to get us out of there. The kicker: they charged us for the sparkling wine at the bar that we did not even want! Truly disappointed with the experience and frankly surprised this place has a Michelin star. For close to $500, you can have a much better experience at any number of restaurants in the Bay Area. read more

Really good fine dining restaurant in downtown San Anselmo! My boyfriend and I went there for a special occasion recently and we ordered 1 first course, 2 entrees and 1 dessert: 1) shima-aji, strawberries, yuzu gel, rice crackers, soy salt... it was so delicious, I honestly could have had ten plates it! Sushi-grade fish paired with a nice zesty yuzu gel. The seasonings were yum but honestly the fish was so high quality I could have eaten it with just the yuzu gel. 2) sonoma duck breast, pickled cherries, corn, morels... it was divine. The duck was tender and perfect, a little too much red wine in the marinade but delicious nonetheless. I also love corn and morels so it was a win! 3) alaskan halibut, maine lobster, english peas, coconut... this was great too and it came with lots of roasted broccoli and cauliflower, and a miso dressing to top everything off. The seafood was fresh and flavorful as well. 4) black forest cake with black sesame ice cream... oh dear. I haven't had a black forest cake in a long time and it was an amazing reuniting moment! You will love this one. I swear! So all that amazing food and yet a 4 star rating... Our service, even though the server was a really nice and sweet lady, was kind of lacking. We got the wrong beer and it erupted (thankfully my boyfriend was quick enough to take it away from my hand), and we actually ordered 2 of the first courses and only got one yet both were on the bill. They took care of us and comp'd our dessert which we appreciate. The server said she was (or someone in their crew) was having a hard evening, so we understand. Serving some of the finest food in the SF Bay Area, Madcap continues to give us creative, exquisite, and exceptional cuisine with superb service all around. We had a Monday night Memorial Day reservation and opted for the special 4 course meal. First, a delectable corn soup with chunks of salmon. Second, a delicious warm duck salad. Third, the short ribs with ravioli -- nobody does it better. And finally a dessert of strawberries in strawberry consommé with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. We try to dine at Madcap monthly and we have our favorites like the trout, the duck, the cod, and the steak. But every dish here is wonderfully tasty, intensely flavorful, and brilliantly conceived and plated. I've wanted to try Madcap for a while, and recently we finally made it up to Marin for the occasion. It was a great meal after a bit of a rocky start. I'll get the cons out of the way: Everyone in our party of 8 arrived at least 15 minutes early for our 7:30 reservation, but we ended up not being seated until almost 8:00. After driving an hour and a half (and knowing we'd have a long ride home!), we were hungry and eager to start the meal. At least they were apologetic about it. Also, this place is SMALL. There is space for 1 person to wait at the front of the restaurant, but otherwise you can wait outside or walk around the block. Also, the bathroom is a bit odd - there is a curtain in the middle separating the toilet from the sink and an extra door across from the sink, so the whole time I was in there I was wondering if I was about to get walked in on... We were seated at our table, which should have been a table for 6 and was a bit too cramped for the 8 of us. The people at the heads of the table were overlapping place settings with the people at the ends. It was also really hot in the restaurant, so we asked them to turn up the AC. On the plus side, they were quick to bring out the first bites, so once the AC kicked in a bit and we resigned ourselves to getting close with our tablemates, things were good. Pros: The food! We all had the tasting menu ($88) and a few of us had a the wine pairing. They accommodated the pescatarians in our group. Wines were very good and the food was mostly great. Highlights: Mt. Lassen Trout, shima aji, udon, rabbit tortelloni. Could do without: ricotta ravioli (seemed to lack flavor) and goat cheese almond cake (too fluffy and not a ton of flavor). Although the strawberry sorbet that came with the cake was AMAZING. Service was friendly and attentive. Overall, a good meal and good value for the money. I did expect a bit more on the atmosphere from a one Michelin star restaurant, but it's in a small building and it's in Marin, not SF. I'd come back, but probably not with a large group. read more

Our table didn't participate in the tasting menu but everything we ordered was delicious: lobster shot, trout, rabbit tortelloni, black cod and short ribs, caramel pot de creme and okinawa sugar mousse. One of my favorite places by far. Great for a special date night and well, anytime you're willing to splurge just a tiny bit to have something of equal quality and half the price of one of the finer places in the city such as Gary Danko, Quince or La Foilie. Those restaurants are all great eats but madcap rivals them with a French laundry master chef and the comfort of a family run business with an incredible focus on local produce. Keep up the great work and I look forward to see you at the market Ron! read more

After dining at many of these Michelin restaurants and leaving with letdowns, it's so nice to finally enjoy Chef Siegel's food again. We first dined at his restaurant Masa in SF and was blown away. We followed him to Ritz Carlton then Mina. I'm glad he's finally opened his own and it's exceeding expectations. The $88 tasting menu rivals the $150+ at Commis or Birdsong. If you are a fan of Chef Siegel, you won't be disappointed. I'll definitely come back to dine again even if it takes us an hour to get there. read more

We have visited Madcap several times. Everything is so well-prepared it's never necessary to add salt or pepper. And we like our food well-seasoned! A chicken dish I enjoyed recently was a delicious work of art. Vibrant colors, textures and flavors were so extraordinary, I whipped out my iphone to capture the dish's beauty. Another memorable meal was Chef Ron's rendition of a toothsome steak with mouthwatering vegetables. And then, there's the charred octopus, which I'd never tasted before. I've ordered it three times in a row and am hungering for more! Not to be missed is the rabbit tortellini, served in a handcrafted bowl with a paddle like spoon. One reviewer mentioned sopping up the awesome broth with Brickmaiden Bread. I tried it and it was simply unreal. There's a big difference between having dinner out - and making dinner out an experience. From the warm welcome, the decor, the service, the inventive cooking, the wide variety of options, it's no wonder that a well-deserved Michelin star was awarded to Madcap. We wanted to come here before they got more hype and prices got out of hand. A friend's friend had worked under the chef at prior places before and highly recommended this place. I'll admit, the drive up to San Anselmo from the peninsula can be pretty rough, especially if you're going through SF, but for a later reservation on a Saturday night, we ended up getting here in a little over an hour. We had an 8:45pm reservation, which I didn't think was that late, but we were definitely the last ones in the dining room. That said, we never felt rushed at all, and it felt almost like private dining. Our server's name was Jack, and he was great - very approachable, knowledgeable, good sense of humor, was very careful about not interrupting our conversations. We opted for the tasting menu ($88/person) since it included basically everything we wanted off the a la carte menu. They had pretty reasonable wine prices, and we were lucky the sommelier was there that night. That said, our server, Jack, also knew quite a bit about the wines and how to pair them. They had a mix of local and international wines. We ended up with a Burgundy and then an Unti Grenache blend (I like Unti a lot - located in Healdsburg). 1. Saffron mussel shot with white miso: super intense, umami flavors, served warm, great way to start 2. Uni panna cotta with shima aji collar and vanilla oil. The panna cotta itself is very subtle, and the shima aji adds a lot to it (slightly acidic, savory, different texture). I wished there were more shima aji 3. Rabbit liver terrine: layers of rabbit liver mousse with hibiscus gel and almond cake at the bottom - they looked just like petit fours. It was a good combination of flavors and textures (2 per person) 4. Celery root soup with candy cap mushroom and pine nut crumble: LOVED this. It was a super creamy soup with no cream in it - just super smooth strained celery root. The candy cap mushrooms have a maple aroma when baked and dried, and the crumble with the pine nuts added great texture 5. Bread with salted butter 6. Shima aji with satsuma, rice crackers, oboro kombu. The oboro kombu looks like shredded paper, and the fresh seaweed was described to be almost like a fruit roll up texture, which was totally on point. I thought the most interesting part was the pink purée of Japanese pickled plum - it's intense but really goes well with the orange segments and the fish. The rice crackers were pretty amazing, too - way more refined than the Chinese restaurant or grocery store stuff. 7. Rabbit tortelloni: pretty big sized tortelloni, tender filling. The highlight for me was the rabbit braising liquid. There was also a miso mushroom puree underneath and then a parmesan spuma. The pasta texture itself was great 8. Seared scallop: a HUGE scallop, served with salsify and radish, and a baby beet puree, topped with dashi. This dish was on the saltier side, but I like salt. Also, I can't remember the last time I saw a scallop this big. Jack brought us a glass of an Unti Vermentino that went great with this dish 9. Dry aged ribeye with nantes carrot risotto, chicories, a beautiful piece of a king trumpet mushroom, and a red wine reduction. For me, the mushroom was actually the highlight. 10. Almond cake with truffle ice cream: yes, truffle ice cream - subtle (not overly truffled like many things are), very unique. Also, I really like almond cake Portions for each course were quite generous (but not overly big). There was a $20 butter poached lobster add-on option, but it somehow got lost in the order - it was supposed to be with the pasta, but then they made us a different pasta off the menu at our request, so I don't blame them for leaving off the lobster. The chef personally apologized in the end when we left. In the end, I we were so full / satisfied even without the lobster. It is a bit far to come out here (not bad from SF), but the food was on point, service was great, and it was an amazingly good value. read more

Meh. I had waited a long time for this. Having been to splendid restaurants in Marin (Insalata's, Left Bank, Pico's, Marche aux fleurs etc), I was intrigued with the prospect of trying what would surely be the next level in cuisine. What I learned was what I suspected: That there are diminishing returns on how great food can get. There is a point in which price does not reflect value. We arrived and were warmly greeted and shown a booth by the door. When I asked about the empty booth in the back, I was told it was reserved for a couple on their 20th anniversary. I mentioned it was my son's 18th and the host laughed and said maybe we'd get the better booth for his 21st. And we're off... We ordered the tasting menu. Our server had a lovely demeanor yet seemed to be in a rush. As she brought out each course she would quickly name the dish and would then turn and go. Twice I asked her to repeat trying to savor the words and combination of ingredients she was describing. This is a tasting menu after all. My intention was for it to be savored - every bite, every word. It felt a bit overwhelming to hear a list of exotic ingredient combinations spewed out at lightning speed and then the server would just disappear. The 8 courses themselves were a mixed bag. It started with a calm shot. A warm frothy creamy shot of clam juice. Tastes just like it sounds. Not for everyone. There was a cod that was served to perfection, moist and melt in your mouth. Followed by a salmon that was dry and overcooked. A cold corn soup that honestly tasted like the box corn soup I get at Trader Joes - with a few roe sprinkled in and a flavorful green on top. The Rib eye steak was the highlight. This is where all the flavors came together. An eggplant puree was the perfect pairing with the meat. Dessert was lovely but not that next level as I had come expecting. A glass of wine was 19 dollars. Hmmmmm. Bread was served with a delicious sweet cream butter - however, I am gluten free and it would have been nice to have a gluten free bread available as an option. In conclusion, to pay upwards of 250.00 - 300.00 for two, was a disappointment. I was expecting a next level culinary experience. Unfortunately the price didn't reflect anything more in the cuisine than the restaurants I frequent. And they are 1/2 the price. I was hoping for it to be more. read more

Went there for my 70th birthday. The food was creative, excellent, portions acceptable and service attentive. We live an hour away but I would go back for a special occassion. The only glitch was that some people don't read their request of limiting time at their table so that other reservations are not delayed. We waited 30 mins beyond our reservation time. read more

We were there two hours tonight before we saw our entree's. Basically 30 minutes between our 2 and 3 course meals. Madcap lacks front room management. When I peeked in the kitchen I saw Ron working feverishly while his kitchen staff was doing a lot of standing around watching. Ron you are a great chef but you need some help. Our experience at Madcap last night was wonderful! The outdoor seating is really magical as we got to watch the sunset over San Anselmo, and they brought out heaters when it got chilly. The service was impeccable - the same buttoned up and friendly but accessible service we expect from them. We did the chefs tasting menu and it was insanely good. Fresh basked rolls, oyster shooter (umami bomb!), Aji sashimi, this incredible egg dish with salmon roe and crispy bread, my favorite salmon with Asian flavors, corn tortelloni, and duck breast topped off by passion fruit chocolate cake. Everything was memorable and perfect. I'd say the atmosphere was even more lively than their inside seating, and I hope they keep the outside program going forever!! From a covid perspective, it felt super safe- they were very cautious and the patrons were all very respectful. We'll definitely be back soon. read more

Offered a lobster addition to the fixed menu but then we learned they "ran out" oddly, as we sat at 5:45p just 15 minutes after they opened (and the place was no where near full at that time). Dishes are hit-and-miss. Long delay between some plates. Wine paring is not interesting and not worth the extra price. Steak "finale" was not very tender and none of us finished that serving.
