My friends' engagement party was hosted here where we took up the space of an entire room. We had our own bar in the area with bartenders serving up their house and well drinks. As for the food, we had a buffet style of rice, beans, enchiladas, and carne asada/pollo tacos. Since this was a special event, all I can comment on is how great the waiters and waitresses were about serving our party from making sure the tables were cleaned out to keeping the food coming. 9pm and trying to find a Mexican restaurant that's open is not easy in the Placentia area (most close by 8 or 9pm), so found Matador which closes at 10pm. First time, and it was confusing at first as the staff was staging it to turn into a nightclub, so had to ask a few staff before getting directed to a booth across the main bar and confirming they are still serving food. I wish I had gotten the name of the waitress as she was fabulous, 5 stars for service! She checked in on us frequent, got all our requests, and the food came quickly. We tried the regular margarita, and then I got the Pineapple King which I loved! And my boyfriend also got the pomegranate margaritas which he liked. *Definitely recommend any of their specialty margaritas because they do special infusions in house. As for the food, it was OK and not as good as authentic Mexican food that we expected, this is why I gave it 4 stars. We really was excited to get the albondigas soup, and it wasn't as good as other places but it wasn't awful. The meatballs to me was a bit hard and the soup was tasty but not taste like a typical albondigas soup. My boyfriend ordered the Steak a la Plancha. The steak with the sauce was delicious, and great pairing with the plantains and beans. I got the blacked mahi mahi, and instead of rice they let me substitute it for some sautéed squash and bell peppers. It's served with green and red sauce which was quite spicy. I didn't like my dish as much as I thought the fish was over cooked so it was a bit dry. By 10pm, disco lights came on, DJ music and music videos on the TVs. We stayed a bit as it was interesting to people watch and the music was pretty good. All in all, we got some dinner. After realizing none of us wanted to cook, my family and I came here for their brunch. They were able to seat us right away due to the weather which worked for us since there was 8 of us! We had Hailey as a server and I know we will always request her when we come back. She was so attentive and made sure we were all satisfied and happy with our meals. Kids' meals are the BEST deal anywhere- $5 with two sides and a drink. One of my daughter's sides was a cup of Albondigas soup! My son had the pepper jack hash browns, which were delish. I had the Chilaquiles breakfast. I'm a Chilaquiles guy, and I can tell you that these were the BEST I've ever had anywhere. Asked for Tapatio, but didn't need it. Great chile flavor, maybe Pasillas, I don't know? Wife's Not Your Traditional Carnitas was also the BEST ever- large chunks perfectly roasted in a blood orange Mexican coke glaze. The Mojo Pork Mofongo ($15) from the dinner menu looked really good, but we didn't try it. Since our brunch dishes were a reasonable $11 each, the Bottomless Mimosas were a fair deal for $15 per person, so $26 for champagne brunch, except the food is awesome! I thought it was beautiful. You walk into this majestic scene of Spanish style decor. It has beautiful outdoor area. I'm sure it serves a big party. We came on a whim. I was so excited to visit this place. We had a horrible waiter so much so We had a complain to the manager. We don't complain about anything but we felt we were treated poorly. The drinks were amazing but I was not too crazy about the food. I do not like chipotle and they did not have mayonnaise to replace. Will I go back? Yes, but I think only for drinks. Chips and salsa were yummy and I ended up getting the bottomless mimosas since it was $14 and I figured that'd be two drinks, so I could at least drink that much. I ordered the Susan's lunch bowl which was chicken, beans, avocado and some veggies, and my friend got the carne asada tacos. Once again, trying to be healthy left me a bit disappointed. My bowl was just okay, nothing too exciting, not super flavorful. My friend gave me a few pieces of his meat and it was really tasty. We had a chance to sample different items on the menu, and everything was so good. We've been fans ever since! The chips and salsa are great here. The salsa has a smoky flavor that makes it delicious. We've tried the Burrito Bowl and Fajitas, both of which were good. My absolute favorite dish here is the Drunken Shrimp. The sautéed shrimp in a garlic butter sauce is served with yellow squash, zucchini, and cilantro lime rice. It's just heavenly. I'm totally addicted! The staff is friendly and helpful here. They always bring out the chips and salsa right away. The drinks come out shortly after. Although the patio was a really great spot for my aunt's birthday, the restaurant is a bit small and can get pretty crowded and noisy. I really like the food here at Matador Cantina.
