We are local and finally decided to try Mae's based on all the hoopla. Granted, we went on a busy day (Saturday morning), but what better way to experience the local scene. Yes, we expected to wait because they do not accept reservations for a table of 2. A 15 minute wait was not unreasonable, however, 15 turned into 35 and a few couples were seated before us. From the time we gave our names to the time we finally had food, it was an hour. The coffee was the absolute worst I've ever had - the waitress must have known how awful it was because we weren't offered a second cup. The food was just "meh" for both of us (eggs benedict and Julie's Omelet). For $40 including tip - yes, 20% tip for this horror show - we'll never go back. read more

It was Father's Day and we luckily made a reservation and our server immediately told us there was a long kitchen wait and we put our order in right away. I loved this open communication. My only complaint is that both times we have visited they have either ran out of some ingredients or whole dishes on the menu and the wait was long for the food even when it was not Father's Day. Overall we enjoyed all of our meals here, great portions, decent prices and great service. I absolutely love their pastry counter as well as their cinnamon swirl bread. This was my first visit to Mae's. I met a friend for Sunday brunch. They were quite busy, but we were greeted immediately and were seated within a few minutes. They have a nice selection of adult beverages for brunch. I enjoyed a seasonal mule. I also had a seasonal benedict with hash. It was delicious. Very flavorful and just the right amount of hollandaise. We saw many amazing dishes coming out of the kitchen, and we look forward to trying other offerings soon. I went to Mae's Cafe with my best friend on our short weekend get away in Maine. BY FAR the best food and restaurant experience we've had on our trip. A lovely setting inside and outside, with a spacious, covered porch area where we ate and enjoyed the gorgeous weather. Our waitress, Donna, was simply the best! She was so friendly and attentive, even though we later found she was having a bad day! I got their special Crab Cake Eggs Benedict, with an extra side of sweet potatoes. The asparagus that came with it (for extra $) was perfectly cooked. And the combo of the crab cake, English muffin, poached egg and hollandaise sauce was a wonderful delight to my taste buds! My best friend got their BLTE (blt+fried egg) with their house fries, which are wonderfully crisp but well cooked potato chunks. The sandwich was unusually spiced but in a delicious way! And very fresh tasting ingredients all around. After we finished our meal, we grabbed a couple of baked goods from their bakery case... their lemon blueberry brownie was an usual delight! So yummy! The only downside... the vanilla latte and mocha latte my best friend and I got were definitely not their strong suit. But then again, I can definitely be a coffee snob. I make my own lattes at home, if that tells you anything. The lackluster lattes definitely didn't spoil our very delightful experience at Mae's Cafe & Bakery. Maes used to have truly good brunch, but I went today for the first time in a year or so and was unpleasantly surprised. After being seated I was surprised to see that brunches were between $16-18, which seemed very expensive. I ordered an $18 Breakfast Burrito with home fries, while my wife got a $17 omelette. Both were bland and tasteless, even the pico de gallo had no taste. The home fries were dry and tasteless. The omellete was like scrambled eggs that had never been turned--hard, dry, and tasteless. Overall this was a good breakfast but a bit of a mixed bag with much to like and other parts that left us not as pleased. The homemade corned beef hash was fantastic... not at all like traditional hash but absolutely awesome with huge chunks of meat and home fries. The toast was thick and tasty. My daughters loved the cinnamon swirl, but my wheat toast was served cold with the butter sitting on it like school paste. The service was decent considering how young the whole waitstaff was but nothing special. My heart really goes out to restaurants doing there best to make it during this time of staffing shortages. Front counter was a little disorganized and we waited 25 minutes, even with open tables. Once we were seated, service was spot on. Food was very good. I had the Crab Benedict. Perfect eggs. The large slice of tomato tasted like it had been refrigerated. My guess is someone new in the kitchen didn't know, NEVER REFRIGERATE TOMATOES! I feel for the owner, line of people waiting, empty tables and no one to serve them. So frustrating. read more

My wife wanted to try eating here. The waitress, Whitney, was really friendly and attentive, but that was the best part of the visit. Almost everything on the menu includes feta or some other strong goat cheese. I'm not a fan of strong cheeses and find that most places that use it on everything are trying too hard to be something they aren't. I finally decided on something and was then told they were out and I'd have to make another selection. I finally settled on the biscuits and gravy. Not only was it $13-14 for two small biscuits and some scrambled eggs, the biscuits were burned. I don't mean over-toasted, I mean burned. The gravy was ok, but had some sort of squishy sausage cubes that could not be identified. You'd think a place with the word Bakery in their name could bake a biscuit that was edible. I wanted a soda and asked for with Coke or Pepsi, whatever they had. I was told they don't have either and instead offered a Mexican soda. My wife tried to clarify if it was a Mexican Coke. We were told it was a Mexican soda, but was made locally. What is that? Quality Mexican anything is not a strong suit of anyone in Maine. I ordered water. My wife got some kind of salad with apples in it and I had the burned biscuits. The bill came and it was $30. Overpriced, over-cooked, over-hyped and completely underwhelming. We had our son's graduation lunch in their upstairs space and it was a perfect place to celebrate! 25 guests had plenty of room to mingle and visit. My review here is for the take & bake double crusted blueberry pie. I have eaten LOTS of blueberry pie & this one was THE BEST. First off, it was HUGE & WEIGHTY. Taller than any other blueberry pie I have ever seen anywhere. The only pies I have ever seen that look this tall are those crazy high stacked apple pies. If you showed me this pie & asked me to guess it's flavor, I'd say apple - only because of the extremely portly shape. It was filled with what must have been A THOUSAND tiny Maine blueberries. No overly corntarch-thickened fruit muck that some pies have to hold the fruit together, just slightly thickened juice. Not overly sweet, lots of blueberry flavor, freshened with a perfect amount of lemon zest (& juice?). The top crust was encrusted with large sugar crystals, so it was shiny & beautiful coming out of the oven - and each bite was crunchy & fruity. The CRUST was not exactly flaky - which imo is a good thing. I do not like a flaky crust. I loved THIS crust - not as rich as other crusts I've had, also a good thing because imo the fruit filling should be showcased. This pie was great hot out of the oven, and cold the next day (and room temp in the middle of the night). The crust wasn't fatty gross when it was cold, like flaky crusts are. Seriously, this was THE BEST BLUEBERRY PIE IN THE WORLD! Obviously, highly recommend : ) read more
