So let's just get this out of the way - I am the whitest half Asian you will ever meet! This applies especially to cuisine. Well, my girlfriend was craving Thai so she talked me into coming here. We were greeted immediately when we walked in and seated right away. There weren't very many customers as we were having a very late lunch at 4pm. Our server, Tanner, was absolutely one of THE BEST servers I have ever had! He was friendly, attentive, respectful...I could not have asked for a better server! We ordered Thai iced tea, shrimp Thai fried rice, french fries, calamari, and broccoli and chicken. Everything but the calamari was absolutely delicious to me! The calamari batter was good, I just think the calamari itself was a bit undercooked. No worries, I still ate some of it. The portions are plentiful but even so, we were apparently so hungry there was barely anything left to take home! The restaurant itself was a lot nicer than I had anticipated. Best vegetarian Summer Veggie and Tofu Rolls on the island. Always super fresh ingredients and tightly packed with only a little bit of noodle filler. The packing actually gives them a pleasant interior crunch which I have not found anywhere else yet. Also amazing veggie Spring Rolls with carrot, radish and I think peanuts which are very unique and flavorful fillings. They are slightly longer than average to make them extra crispy which makes them extra yummy to me. I pretty much live on these items. For other vegetarian options, appreciate their Massaman (Peanut curry) and it's spicier cousin Penang (Peanut Red curry) which I usually get without bell peppers as their flavor can overwhelm the curry taste. All the currys are good though because they use full fat coconut milk unlike some other cheaper restaurants which water them down. For meat options, the Tom Yum soup is the best flu fighter with it's citrus richness. Tom Kha is also a comforting mix of coconut milk and mushroom. Unfortunately I believe the Tom Kha base is fish based and the Tom Kha is chicken based, so not vegetarian friendly. Chicken Satays have a nice spiced coconut milk marinade with good quality chicken. Everything here is very fresh and vibrant which comes at a premium but once you eat here, you will think most other Thai restaurants are lifeless in flavor. read more

We picked up three dinners this evening. The food was good. The wait, though,was much too long. They said it would be about 20 minutes. We waited about 35 minutes out in the parking lot. When we got home, we saw the was no rice with the food. You would think that a $16 cardboard container of curry would have some rice with it. Or at least let us know it is not included. read more

My mother and I are very frequent to going to Maile's Thai. We had Dined in Sunday night and service was absolutely horrible. The lady helping us had no class. Food was good but we both left very disappointed. Our waters was not filled once. We never gotten asked if we would liked dessert. No one came to check on us while eating. As it was not busy at all inside so there was no excuse for anything. Asked for take out boxes multiple times to 2 different people. You should really retrain your employees if you want to have local customers continue to come back to your restaurant. read more

Gotta feed my Thai food craving once a while and this place does it for me. Tonight my $40 order included: GREEN CURRY w/chicken: Thanks Chad O. for recommending this dish! (I usually order the Panang curry but I think I've just developed a peanut allergy so Panang makes me hamajang.) The chicken was tender and there was plenty of it. I ordered "mild" but there was plenty of heat....enough to make my nose start running, which is usually "medium" in my book. I'd order again! YELLOW CURRY w/beef: Even though I asked for "medium" on this dish, it wasn't as spicy as the green curry. The carrots and potatoes were cooked enough to be soft without being mushy. I think I'm a new fan of this yellow curry. PAD THAI: I asked for this dish without peanuts but they threw them on there anyway (minus a star).. I couldn't resist ordering their "signature Thai dish" but now I am regretting it because I have some serious allergy issues going on right now. Bottom line, if you have a peanut allergy, you probably shouldn't be eating Thai food in the first place. Other than that, this is solid Hawaii Thai food. read more

I love Thai food, even if I don't stray far from the usual which consists of tom yum, pad Thai, and panang curry. Still I love it and I love to try new places. My friend recommended this restaurant because of their consistency. Some other Thai places can be hit or miss, but she promises Maile's is consistently good. I started off with the Thai iced coffee. I seriously have never had a better iced coffee. It was sweet and refreshing (and probably really fattening). :) All the dishes were good, but I especially liked their tom yum (spicy lemon grass soup). For dessert I ordered their tapioca, which is served hot and enough for at least 3 people. I really liked it, but I loved it after I took it home and ate it chilled. The restaurant is spacious and has a nice ambiance, but is still casual. The service was decent. Hawaii Kai is lucky to have such a delicious Thai restaurant! read more

Best Thai restaurant in Honolulu? Let's check the facts as I have experienced them: Amazing food? Yes! Great selection on the menu? Yes! Terrific service? Yes! Amazingly clean and safe environment dining in? Yes! Option for pick up and take out? Yes! Easy parking? Yes! Full bar with hospitable and entertaining bartender? Yes! Maile's Thai Bistro hits all these points, it really is that good. I'm running out of adjectives to express just how good it is. After a year of not going into restaurants, my wife and I had an anniversary so we decided we would go to Maile's which we knew was practicing safe covid requirements and then some. While other restaurants were operating at 50% occupancy, they were operating at 30% occupancy for safety. Everything was spotless. The safety measures in place made us feel very safe to eat and be without masks at the table, and it was just awesome to see a few other people in the restaurant also eating and enjoying a great meal together. The service was impeccable, and the food was incredibly flavorful and delicious, not to mention how great the plates looked in their design and presentation. This is a real testament to smaller restaurants with owners who actively are interacting with their customers and have the skill and ability to go above and beyond what would we normally would look at as a "great meal". I can't review much about the restaurant and service as I have not had the opportunity to do so..... however I do have time to do a take out order .... and it never disappoints the fat cells!!! The food is soooooo delicious- From the food that I have eaten from here .... I would recommend checking it out for yourself. I also recommend to order an array of food .... Update to my previews review. We went this past week for a dinner and what a disappointment. My favorite cashew chicken dish was mainly just onions and few pieces of chicken swimming in a sauce. The other dish we ordered was garlic tofu with veggies, which was still pretty good, but also pretty low on the tofu part. The service is still excellent, just the food was rather disappointing. And for a $40+ dinner I do expect a bit more. I hope it will change back to what it used to be, because it was my favorite neighborhood restaurant. read more

Masaman curry with chicken (mild) - Worst Thai curry that I have eaten so far in my life. The red curry paste was not even mixed/cooked well and we had raw chunks of them. My favorite Pad Thai in Hawaii. BUT, they automatically put peanuts on the plate so just be careful. A lot of other Thai restaurants now will only put the peanuts on by request so don't take it for granted, in case you're allergic or just don't like it (the diced up peanuts come with the bean sprouts as basic garnishes to the plate). To be honest, I've had a few of the other dishes like the curry dish and some other "stir fry" type dishes and I'm not as big a fan. I come here and order pad thai and maybe dessert. I stick to what I know is good now. The dessert is really good but the sticky rice is really dense--just a warning. But yummy. Only issue with the food I've had is inconsistency with the spice level. One night we went in and asked for medium and man that sucker burned me a new one. But most times the "medium" pad thai had just a little kick that makes you smile. So I don't know what to tell you. You chance it. It's normally served "mild" so there's no spice and maybe just that one night the chef was having a bad day so they wanted me to steam. But I don't know. I just order it mild now. I'm scared. They take reservations, so make a reservation! Looks can be deceiving as a small neighborhood looking restaurant, but it becomes one bustling place and you may be caught waiting if you don't book ahead. There's a long bar there that has a tv to watch. Some times they play ESPN, one night they had a church sermon broadcast (no sound though), sometimes it was news. I don't really know what the theme of the bar is, but it's there in case you want to just sit at the bar and eat or drink. Easy parking, as long as Costco isn't having a mad rush. Oh and recently (Jan-Feb 2012) there's been a 10% yelp coupon if you check in. I don't know what the timing of that is but worth checking in! read more

Something about it tasted different than other Thai restaurants. The taste was so delicious that writing this makes me want it again! The BF ordered it hot and added extra chili flakes. He was definitely sweating but loved the heat. I ordered the yellow curry and got it with chicken and tofu. Also a hit! So many delicious options here. What makes it unique is the taste. I can't exactly pin point why it tastes different but I think that the noodles were much more flavorful. The dish had a lot of texture and was overall very tasty! I'd love to return. read more

And I like really spicy. This has happened way too consistently. Ordered pupu spring rolls and calamari. Both horrifically bad. Spring rolls were tiny and tasteless w/ mostly over-fried wrapping. Fried calamari was chewy and tasteless like fried rubber tires. The dining room has just a handful of diners. It's just nowhere near quality Thai food. Cold beer though. I've been involved in many successful Maui and Oahu food and beverage business since the early 1980's and this restaurant exhibits all the common signs of bad management, bad food and declining sales and customers. We came in at 3pm for lunch, so you know that we are hungry. We tried the following items: Maile Appetizer sampler: Fried calamari, chicken satay skewer, fish cake and egg roll. Comes with three different types of dipping sauce: peanut, sweet and spicy, fish sauce. It was $20, good variety but small portions. Tom Yum : Lemon-grass soup with lots of shrimp. For how upper-class the east side is, there aren't very many classy restaurants around. Maile's Thai Bistro fills a void with its dim, atmospheric lighting, formal glass-top tables, and a quiet buzz of conversation mixed with with the din of distant pop music. It's an experience that is oft missed until you sit, contentedly, realizing the environment makes up half the experience. Or maybe I don't eat at nice restaurants enough, I dunno lol. The service was quick, attentive, and polite. We were immediately seated in the cutest corner table between the window and the bar, where two sides of the table had booth seating. Our server was helpful in ordering and even asked which dishes we should receive first. Unfortunately, we weren't entirely impressed with the food or the prices. The summer rolls were incredibly neat in presentation and tasted great, but the yellow chicken curry and the beef rad na we ordered were lacking in volume for $14+. Other thai restaurants have similar fare for under $10, and we didn't find either dish to be especially tasty enough to justify such a price hike. In fact, the beef rad na had an oil slick in one corner that was thicker than the sauce content itself. Hard to get excited for chow fun buried in the exxon valdez. It's a solid three stars. Maybe I would come back for a quiet sit down at the bar, but the food value just isn't there to warrant repeat meals. I'll seek out the lovely atmosphere at another venue. read more

Food was great. Price and portion are what disappoints. Between 3 people we ordered four items totaling $90. The items were quite small. With a normal appetite I would suggest atleast 2 plates per person to be completely satisfied. Thai tea was good. The papaya salad was just a bit spicy for my taste. They say unless otherwise specified all items come mild. The pad Thai was nice with most toppings (peanuts, string beans, etc) separate upon being served. I appreciated only mixing in the add ons that I like. The salt and pepper shrimp was delicious! Crunchy and flavorful. Keep in mind it comes with the skin on (which I love.) my family didn't quite appreciate it. It is served over a generous amount sautéed onions, and green peppers (veggies were very peppery.) last the yellow chicken curry. The curry was perfect. The best balance of thickness and creamy. The only place it fell short is I feel that the veggies carrots and potato were under cooked and just too crunchy. Ultimately I would eat this again if I wasn't paying for it. They could either lower their prices or be a bit more generous on the portions. read more

That's the best word to describe the food here, I don't usually like to leave bad reviews but this is a must because when the food is so bad to ruin your day you have to warn other people before they try this place. It started by letting us standing there for a while even though the place was empty, we ordered the food and the waitress didn't even bother to ask us how spicy we wanted our dishes so just sent everything bland. Ok so I was never to big on Thai food. I liked my Pad Thai and that was it for me. But today my boyfriend took me here and oh my goodness I loved it ! I tried a chicken curry, calamari, their vegetable tempura and a "Thai loco loco. It was all amazing to be very honest and the fact that you can pick your protein when you order an entree is awesome. The drinks were fabulous too and I will say even though I am not a Bloody Mary fan my bf highly recommends it and says it's his favorite. Good Thai food is only cheap in Thailand! This is the best Thai cuisine on Kalanianaole and I often order food an hour in advance and pick it up on the way to Sandy beach or makapuu. Celebrated husband's birthday with a large take-out order of Shrimp Tom Yum soup that is our all-time favorite and best in Hawaii ! Their shrimp summer rolls were very fresh and plump -- unlike many other restaurants that are rubbery and hardly any filling inside. Spring rolls were also yummy crispy and garlic ong Choi (another one of our favorites ) was delightful; with pork yellow curry and Rad Na wide noodles with broccoli and veggies- Also delicious too! I've tried their Pad Thai and Panang Curry before and they were ok. Decided to give the restaurant another try and ordered the Spicy Basil Noodles (PAD KI MAO) instead, and it was great! One suggestion is that they add MORE BASIL to the dish... for a dish called "Basil Noodles," it didn't come with as much as I was expecting to really get that flavor in every bite. The best part of our dining experience was the great service from our waiter, Spencer. He was helpful, attentive, and accommodated our requests. Great young man! read more
