Found this place on Yelp while staying in the Financial district. It was popular on a weekend morning but glad I could get a few pastries! The Parisian flan was in between cheesecake, crème brûlée, and flan with its vanilla bean filling with a flaky crust. The croissant with pumpkin had a smooth filling and a fall cozy vibe. The quiche had a flaky and crisp crust and filling of egg and goat cheese with chunks of butter squash perfection. Definitely recommend for any pastry lovers, wish I could have tried more! The plain croissant had an attractive blonde tone and a nice softness to it. Inside, the layers were the ideal buttery and flaky honeycomb. The saison was our favorite--ingredients included cherry and tarragon. It was fresh in flavor and had cherry bits in it. I found the canele to be decent but not memorable. The exterior was crunchy while the interior was moist and spongey. We both devoured each pastry and savored each bite. San Francisco has an abundance of noteworthy bakeries and Maison Nico is one of them. Find them downtown, a bit hidden off Montgomery Street. Parking can be found on the street or in garages nearby. Their pastries are beautiful to look at and consume, service is swift, and all in all a memorable experience. Located at 710 Montgomery Street near the Embarcadero, Delaroque's Pâté en Croûte visible from a doorway where diners are forced to wait for indecisive guests and servers lacking a sense of urgency, it is once inside that one can peruse a full selection including imported Jams and Wines plus everything from Viennoiserie to Choux. Opting to sit outside, all items carefully plated but the server never once cracking a smile, Nico's Canele strikes a good balance of crunch to Custard while the Financier is moist with toasty notes provided by Hazelnuts. I had heard that they won 2023 best croissant in SF, so I wanted to try and see for myself. I have to say, really great croissants! It was super crispy and flaky, and the flavors were fantastic. I got the ham and cheese croissant, the huckleberry and chestnut croissant, and a pain au chocolat. The ham and cheese croissant really nice and different from your normal ham and cheese croissant, as I think they added onions and black pepper. I asked them to reheat the ham and cheese for me and they did, which I appreciated. The huckleberry and chestnut was also great-it wasn't too sweet and I enjoyed the berry flavor paired with the chestnut filling. The pain au chocolat was also good, but I liked the other two croissants more. We also ordered two lattes, but there wasn't much coffee flavor. We waited in line maybe 15-20 minutes to order. The only drawback is that there isn't much seating inside, so we had to wait a while for seats. I saw quite a few people order their quiche-will have to try that the next time! I ordered their highly popular plain croissant, ham & cheese croissant, brown butter chocolate chip cookie and a cappuccino. We dined inside where it felt like being in a cafe in Paris. Everything was authentic in here with its lavish decor, fast and focused employees, the colorful pastry case with freshly baked goods, etc. I felt like I was in Paris. The croissant was buttery, light flakey, and a thick moist inside. This croissant is delicious and definitely worth the trip. We're huge fans of their ham & cheese croissant. The flavors inside are so good!! The melted Gruyère with ham and mushrooms does it for me. I can't wait to have this again. The brown butter cookie is tasty with a nice light crisp to it. It was buttery and had just enough chocolate. I had to purchase a baguette to go with their in-house made pâté. The Pâté had bits of pork belly, duck liver, grand marnier and port. For some reason, the turkey(?) in the croissant tasted and smelled a bit acidic/sour/off. Not sure if that was because of the reheating process or if it was intended to be that way. The business actually was still setting up for the beautiful store in the heart of the Financial District as they debuted at the Saturday farmer's market. I've been buying various pastries at their weekly stand on the south driveway of the Ferry Building Saturday mornings. My friend tried their assorted pastry box on Neon and really enjoyed it. She enjoyed the caneles and, knowing that they have a stand on Saturdays at the Ferry Building, asked me to get more on the ensuing week. Sadly, these are not available at the market. As a result, I found an open Friday morning to walk here and get this and another item that they don't offer at the Ferry Building. I was impressed by the setup and the attractive counter display. I picked up my grandma (who is French, so she's basically an expert) to grab some croissants on a Sunday morning. The store front is very cute and they have this signature pink that definitely caught my eye. We ordered the Ham & Cheese Croissant, Smoked Salmon Croissant Sandwich (avoid if you don't like the taste of goat cheese), Seasonal Croissant (seasonal berries and almond paste), and also tried their espresso drinks. I was surprised that the total was almost $50, but what do you expect eating out in SF. Everything was really tasty, but i think we all agreed that we prefer Arsicault (it hits different). Still giving it 4 stars because it is still very very good!! Line was not too long and service was quick at around 9:30am on a Sunday. I was a bit uncomfortable because it was my first time and I felt pressured to order right away, but overall they were nice! I got the chocolate croissant (pain au chocolat), Choux de Saison (pear and cardamom cream), brandy apple tart, plain croissant, chocolate chip cookie and an iced latte. My honest take: the apple tart was ethereal. The best apple tart anywhere, perfectly diced apples bursting with flavor, the rich cream that balanced the acidity of the apples and the delicate buttery crust. The choux de Saison was also delicious with the pear and hint of cardamom flavor. The chocolate croissant however was good, not outstanding for me. I would give it a 4/5. The other croissant shop that starts with an A (rsicault) in my opinion is better for the croissant. But I will go again tomorrow and get the brioche and a cronut. Love it when you walk down a quiet city street and encounter a tiny place that happens to produce world class foods. We first discovered them at the Embarcadero farmer's market when we tried their Parisian Flan Slice w/ Tahitian vanilla and instantly fell in bakery love. Wonderful light flaky crust that is not overly buttery and the delicate velvety filling with subtle vanilla flavors. Like obsessed lovers, we looked them up on Yelp then proceeded to stalk them at their brick & mortar location on Montgomery St. There we indulged in their Lemon Tart , Smoked salmon avocado goat cheese croissant and Chocolate Croissant. The Lemon Tart, a study in restraint with distinctive real lemon flavors but doesn't make your lips pucker and the filling velvety with just a hint of sweetness. Once your teeth pierce through the filling, they will meet a multi layered delicate crust that easily surrenders to your chomp. Similarly the Smoked Salmon and Chocolate Croissant won our hearts with their airy flaky crust. Not sure what type of smoked salmon but it was soo fresh and pliable that the salmon melted like butter in our mouths.
