I don't know why this place only has 3 stars. This restaurant is good, and the closing down of it's competitor Mitsui up the street was an obvious boost to their business.. The prices are reasonable, good place to take kids or colleagues, and just a general good place to eat with good food. If you're looking for pretentious "I know my fish" type sushi bars... this might not be your place, but if you're a fan of the California roll and its close relatives, this is your sushi bar. Unfortunately, after coming here almost once a week with coworkers for about a year, I really can't say I recommend it anymore. Here's why: 1. It's overpriced. $13.95 for a two-item bento lunch combo? With drinks and tax and tip it's getting into $20 lunch territory and the quality here is nowhere near that level. 2. The quality of the fish is inconsistent and has gone down overall. The last sashimi I had here was not at all fresh. The tuna was metallic and the salmon slimy and off color and downright nasty. 3. They changed their Katsu Sauce. Now it is a light brown hoisin-tasting disaster. So this place is officially off my lunch rotation. O Fine Japanese in Quail Hill has replaced it. We didn't expect this "sizzling mussels" appetizer to be a full meal for two. The mussels were grilled perfectly and the stir fried mixed vegetables were delicious. Another appetizer we enjoyed was the spicy garlic emanate. I was satisfied after these two appetizers that I boxed the chicken teriyaki home. Excellent customer service. ok quality, a bit overpriced, and thin sashimi slices. I ordered a Chirashi take-out on a Friday night because I was in a hurry. My first judge of sushi is the quality of their tuna. This one looked like a lower quality Maguro that was light pink, almost artificial and too perfect and consistent in color. The texture of seemed mushy. I prefer tuna to be a deeper red color instead of the fake consistent pink color. Also, the cuts of sashimi were thin compared to others I've experienced. I would not mind too much about this if it was super fresh tasting, but it wasn't. Last, it was probably on the pricier side for what I'm use to seeing for Chirashi dinners considering the cuts, and I don't consider this place to be high end. Was visiting my friend who lives in Irvine and I wanted sushi so I looked for a place on yelp. I found a suitable restaurant to go to, but kept browsing to see if there was another one I liked better and I found this place and immediately decided to go here instead once I saw the pictures and how much more generous they are with the cuts of fish. I judge a sushi place mostly based on the thickness of their cuts of fish because I've been spoiled living next to a sushi place in my hometown that gives super thick cuts of fish. So my friend and I went and tried it out and we loved it- my friend especially! He kept saying how good the food was. I think this is his fav sushi spot now. They have full roll and half roll options. The half rolls are good if you want to try several different rolls or if you're not that hungry. They give you complimentary edamame to start off with. Our rolls were delicious and service was great! I also like how they stay open a bit later than other places. Nothing to critique really other than the prices are a little more expensive than most other places. read more

I've eaten here a few times and the sushi isn't bad. It's not great but good sushi for what you pay for. I went there last night and saw a waitress drop a part of a sushi roll on the ground. Rather than putting it in the trash she handed the piece to the sushi chef who pieced it back together and placed it back on the plate. He wiped the plate around the roll and poured some more sauce over it, ready to go out to the unknowing customer. If they do something like this right in front of all their customers, who knows what happens behind closed doors. Of all the great sushi places available I would rather go to one that holds higher standards. read more

This is my new favorite sushi place. Love the 50% off every 2nd roll deal they have, this makes it one of the cheaper sushi places without compromising quality. The Irvine roll and the ultimate albacore roll are my favorites. The fish tastes fresh, rice tastes good, portion size is pretty good too. So typically 2 rolls is enough for 2 people. Hey lady with hair in a bun.. Do you not like working at Maizuru? Do you not like your job? Or, do you just not like people? Your attitude reallllly sucks. We like coming to this restaurant. But, when we see you, we almost want to turn around and just leave. Sad to give this place such a low rating, but Bun Lady just made our last visit exactly just that...last visit. Unless she quits or gets fired for lousy service...then we surely would return. Why is it that you advertise free ice cream with yelp check in..and my husband and I both have gotten ice cream every visit.. But, all of a sudden, one day, Bun Lady decides it's per table.. it's not per check in? But the next day, we come and check in and ask another waitress for ice cream...and Bun Lady cuts her off and says ice cream shipment hasn't arrived yet? And another thing, Bun Lady... if a customer sees a roll with smelt eggs and asks for it on the side, PUT IT ON THE SIDE! Don't question or give attitude and then say no smelt egg. Great place to stop in for a quick bite with my sons. Beers are cold and served in an icey frozen mug, of which we were happy to find out that they were only around $2.25 each. I guess this is one of their specials 7-days per week. Sushi choices were immense and portions were large, full rolls, not half-rolls like some places serve. My grocery store has better sushi. The baked dynamite was still refrigerator cold in the center. Both rolls I ordered had cucumber that had been cut hours earlier and was turning mushy and bitter. The juice had absorbed into the rice so no way were the rolls were made fresh. The spice tuna had been food processed to a an unappealing paste. The salmon on top of the roll was badly hacked with knife skills worse than mine instead of being slices. The roll was garnished with a tone of straight sriracha. The heat is ok for me but I could not tasted the salmon. The fish quality was ok but the salmon was cut badly and the tuna was pulverized to a gelatinous mess. The table service was perfect. Loved the waitstaff. Serving sizes were oversized (order the half rolls) and prices were pretty low. read more

I'm pretty much a regular here since I live across the street. The staff is super friendly and tenative to your needs. The sushi is pretty good and the prices are actually decent. All the rolls are made with really fresh ingredients, so i'm a big fan of everything on the sushi menu... My favorite rolls are the Energy Roll and the Sapporo Roll. Also, the bento box combinations are pretty good and they give nice sized portions. Oh and definitely head over for Happy Hour Mon-Thurs... They do a BOGO on all rolls AND cheap sake/beer... But that doesn't mean the food was awful or not good enough compared to the standards of a more authentic looking japanese restaurant. -good taste, decent portion for just okay price The pricing was just okay- $10.50 for a Kamikaze roll which even though it looked decked out with sauces and fried stuff, it was really good and pretty big. I wasn't going for traditional sushi rolls, I was craving something a bit more wild or with more taste, and I was satisfied. -Not as expensive as other joints. Of course, I'm sort of a cheapass so I was a bit disappointed that the roll cost 10.50- but then I remembered that this roll could cost more in those other americanized japanese restaurants- so you can take small comfort in the fact that this place isn't as expensive as those other joints. -Know what you're ordering. My friend had the washington roll and the audacity to call himself daring for trying hardcore sushi. It was just salmon on top of a california roll (and the salmon wasn't even that fresh! I could only taste the crabmeat from the piece I tried) but this restaurant decided to charge 10.50 for that roll also (ridiculous, there wasn't much to the roll, while mine had spicy tuna and eel in it) Anyway, all in all, I would.... not come back here. Sorry, I'll just go to Taiko next time (and it better be open next time!) because I like to get fresh, undecorated sushi from time to time for a cheaper price.
