I want to change my four star to a five star review because the owner took the time to reach out and thank me for my honest feedback. Makai should do what they're best at which is preparing delicious grilled island style food that people come to enjoy. In a perfect world if I were to come back, I would enjoy seeing a steamed broccoli or veggie medley offered as a side dish so I could have a protein with a low-carb options besides the mac salad, rice, corn, or edamame. Corn and edamame are not technically vegetables . Corn is a grain edamame is a bean Both are higher in carbs. If I'm looking for something lower calorie & lower carb, those would not be my first choice. I would definitely frequent Makai more if a steamed veggie side were an option. I also know that I am probably of a small percentage of people who care about this or would want it. Keep doing what you're great at Makai! read more

We came here to grab their $5 bowls.. which if you ask me it's a bargain. It comes with rice and your choice of meat. Now keep in mind this place does weight the meat.. I've gone to other locations where they don't even bother weighting the meat... either way you can beat $5 lunch bowl. Since this Makai is the closest one to my house so I decided to eat here tonight and I was sorely disappointed. I'm usually satisfied with this place but tonight's Kalua Pig had no taste at all! I was sooo hungry for Kalua Pig and I think that's the worse Kalua Pig I've ever eaten. When they open up the cover I saw that the Kalua Pig was filled with water but there was no saltiness to it and no smokiness to it. It was tasteless that it was not pleasurable to eat. So I ended up eating only rice. Very disappointing on this trip. I hope that doesn't happen again. read more

Great experience at Makai's Summerlin location! I usually go to the location on Fort Apache and I never have any complaints there. Service was fast and staff were friendly. The teriyaki beef had this smoky bbq flavor that was delicious. The chicken katsu featured large pieces of chicken (minimal breading!!) and wasn't soggy. The spicy ahi tuna tasted fresh and also had great flavor. The Mac salad was great and garlic edamame was a good side choice also. You're definitely getting your money's worth. read more

Excellent! I've been twice so far and both times very good. Very clean and great staff. First time I got the chicken katsu which was very tasty with rice, salad and macaroni salad. The medium portion was huge and got a couple meals out of it. Second time I opted for the small bowl with chicken teriyaki, rice and macaroni salad. So good! I come to this location often and I enjoy the food but today unfortunately I was very disappointed with the service/ portions. My sister and I ordered Kalbi ribs and got told it would be a 10 minute wait which was no problem. The problem was when we finally got the ribs it was only two pieces each..., I even went back up to ask if there was a mistake and maybe it was accidentally only one serving. The lady at the cash register told me that it was indeed two servings and seemed to not be interested in my problem. i don't expect world class service but at least pretend to care/listen to what im saying. She didn't even look down at the plate. I usually get steak but and get a decent size. Very disappointed in the serving size, having to pay extra for TWO pieces which is mostly bone is completely unacceptable read more

The handsome chef came out to greet us and explained the menu and answered all of our questions. He served us the Korean fried chicken. Very crispy skin. Flavorful with a little bit of spice. Sat on a bed of greens. Next we ordered the sea bass. Light and flaky. Served with coconut rice and a mole sauce. The top was crispy too. The sides paired well with the fish. Also ordered the rib eye mole. The steak was tender and juicy. The smoked mole sauce was so good. Tasted very authentic and we were very surprised that the chiles actually came from Huahaca (?? Spelling). It was a great accompaniment to the steak. It came with house made fresh tortillas. We asked for extra jalapeños and hot sauce and they were very accommodating. I'm not much of a drinker so when I asked John, who is also a very talented mixologist, to make me something that tasted like juice, he delivered this beautiful lychee "martini". The presentation was amazing. And went well with my fish. They had me try the pickle drink. The foam on top was good and the "margarita" at the bottom was good too. They even surprised us with tofu cheesecake. I don't like tofu or cheescake, but wow, this dessert was light. Not overly sweet. It was a perfect way to end the meal. The Chef and John and the other mixologist from Thailand were so friendly that even when we finished our meal, they shared stories with us. I have been eating sushi for years, and there were some pieces I didn't recognize. But everything was downright delicious and so fresh, including one of the most yummy fatty pieces of otoro I have ever had! The staff are so sweet and attentive. There were several ladies who seemed to be sharing hostess and server duties. All were so kind and struck the perfect balance between ensuring everything with the experience was perfect, but not being too overbearing or obtrusive. One of the sushi chefs even came out to personally deliver a dish to the table next to me, and she made a quick stop to ask me if I was enjoying her creations. The downsides. I was by myself and arrived just after opening at about 5:20pm. The place was totally empty except for one single table. I didn't have a reservation, and the hostess was really agonizing about seating me. I was by myself and the place was empty! She even had to go in back and presumably speak with the manager or the chefs to get approval to seat me, which she finally did. But by the time I departed at about 6:15pm, only one other table had arrived and seated! I just find stuff like that annoying. But I guess they take their reservation policy seriously, so just call ahead, especially if you are a group. It appears they are closing soon for renovations. I sure hope that includes upgrading their air conditioning. Granted I visited on a 113 degree day, but the A/C system was not keeping up. I started my dinner with Kaiso Salad (salad that contains seaweed), Premium Sashimi49 (over 25 pieces of fish and other seafood), and Iced Green Tea. I slowly added on a few sushi... Bigfin Reef Squid, Yaki Harasu Nigiri (salmon belly), Unagi Nigiri (fresh water eel), and Botan Ebi (shrimp) in sashimi style (2 pieces each order). The filling was also quite flavorful. As mentioned above, I was quite surprised when my hamburger steak arrived covered in brown gravy since this was neither pictured nor mentioned in the online description. It was a generous portion with three large hamburger steaks atop white rice. There was a small scoop of macaroni salad in the corner. Honestly, however, I thought it was kind of gross to put it there since the gravy covered some of it and also heated it up, so it was no longer a cold macaroni salad. I think they should package the macaroni salad separately. The hamburger steaks were flavorful and tender. The gravy was tasty, but there was too much of it. I think serving it on the side or at least giving that option when ordering would be better. Overall, this was a tasty if somewhat surprising meal. However, I think I would be willing to give it another try.
