Their BBQ ribs are just about the best ribs I have eaten anywhere! The accompanying green noodles are superb. Their Thai Tacos are very delicious. I felt that these two dishes were just about as good as it gets. I have traveled to Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and most of Europe. I have tried various Asian restaurants. While Singapore has amazing food.. this Malai Kitchen is as good as it gets for these two dishes! We tried their massaman lamb - it was not to my personal enjoyment but others might enjoy it.. We asked for hot but it was made mild and also needed more salt. I can extrapolate that some of their red/green curries would probably be quite delicious. I came to Dallas to visit one of my friends from college and was recommended this place. We were greeted and seated right away on the patio which wasn't too loud. We all ordered but there were a few items my sisters friend tried to order and we were told they either don't make it anymore or ran out. She is vegan so her options were pretty limited. I need to commend our waiter I forgot his name but I have a picture of him. He had a party of 20 with a few kids. And never once did he break a sweat. Always had a smile on his face and was absolutely polite!! The food was absolutely perfect. I had the Red curry cod. That was just the perfect amount of food for me. The piece of fish was a good portion and the bowl had the perfect amount of spices with rice and vegetables. Mere perfection. He brought us some complimentary appetizers. Sticky rice with eggplant dip was very yummy and spicy. I had a spicy bloody mary. Was good not great. We also had some samosas. Very HOT to the table. When you bite into it, it is the perfect crunch and just the right amount of meat filling. I feel like this place was a great place for brunch...not sure if it's kid friendly. Not because of the staff or the establishment, but because of the clientele. We had kids that were well behaved but we had some infants that cried a bit but not terribly and was given dirty looks. I love the atmosphere and the area. One of a kind place! Some dishes are great and some are ok. I had the yellow curry which wasn't so great. I've had better at more authentic Vietnamese/Thai restaurants. However, the that mango dessert is amazing!!! We had to order 2 rounds of that. We went to Malai because I was craving Thai food and wasn't too badly disappointed. I had the pad kee mao and my husband had the braised lamb shank. The food came out very quickly, like five minute wait time, quickly. The pad kee mao was quite savory, and the portion size, while not super generous, was filling. The lamb was a bit bland but very tender. However, service kind of blew us away. We never had the same waiter twice, which would have been okay, had any of them bothered to inquire about our needs. After waiting about 10 minutes after our table had been cleared a manager came over to ask us if everything turned out okay. I told him that we just wanted our check and while we would have liked dessert (I saw all the rave reviews about the coconut cream pie on Yelp) we couldn't seem to find our waiter, not only because we had no idea who he was, but because no one had even talked to us aside from taking our order. He was super nice, comped us a dessert, and while we were still ignored (except when they saw the credit card...) his service managed to get this review to a 3 rather than the 2 my temper felt like giving it. read more

We came here on at 7:30ish on a Saturday night. I was a little apprehensive about how long the wait would be as we had no reservation, but we were seated in a reasonable amount of time, even though the restaurant was quite busy. Complimentary sticky rice was brought to the table, which we weren't crazy about, but it was a nice touch. We ordered the spring rolls to start, and they were some of the best spring rolls I have ever had. My husband ordered the Vietnamese ribs and I ordered the seared scallops over pad thai noodles. I was given the option of receiving my noodles "mild, medium, or spicy" and I chose mild, based on the fact that at our fav Thai place even a "1" is pretty spicy. At Malai Kitchen, however, this is a true mild, so I ended up having to use some of their house-made sriracha to spice things up. It had these cruncy bits of tofu in it that were really good, and the scallops were perfectly cooked. My husband's ribs were well cooked - not tough, not mushy. He is very picky about barbecue and ribs, and these seemed to have the right amount of 'bite' to them. We also had a few drinks - I believe he had one of the house brewed beers, which he very much enjoyed. I had a Lemongrass Fizz, and it was honestly one of my favorite cocktails possibly ever. Traveled from OK hoping to find a great Thai spot. This was a huge disappointment. Started with tom yum which was good but at a medium slice level you'd assume to have some heat, but nope. Nothing. Then the chicken satay which was inedible. The chicken was so over cooked it was straight rubber. We told the waiter and he said "sorry the kitchen gets busy" okay? And that's my problem? Then the main course, green curry. Again chicken awful and inedible. We literally didn't even touch it. Such a waste. But silver lining it was cheap. Dirt cheap. Malai was a place that I randomly picked. I was hungry and cold at the same time. Didn't want to walk or drive any further to find a cheap place. Luckily Malai wasn't expensive. I ordered the chicken coconut soup, don't know the actual name but that's what it had. I went for the small portion because it was $6 and hoped it wouldn't come in a mug. The actual size is about a normal bowl size but seemed bigger than a normal small cup of soup. If you're really hungry and broke ask for rice on the side. Rice is free and fills you up. I was full for the night and happy that I ran in here. read more

This authentic Thai restaurant is amazing! The service is quick, the atmosphere is great, and the food is to die for. I always order the Drunken Noodles; it's a dish consisting of sweet and spicy Thai noodles and farm fresh ingredients. Seriously consider getting them-- they're amazing! Another delicious dish I recommend getting is the Mango Sticky Rice dessert. A coconut husk filled with sweet sticky rice, coconut milk and coconut shavings makes the perfect end to a nice meal. However, beware: never order a dish with full spice. When they say spicy, they really mean it! Going with a medium spice option is always the safe bet, and you can order spice to the side if it's not hot enough for you! read more

Love this place. The owners are the nicest people. The service is a notch above fantastic. Probably the most consistent restaurant I've been to in Dallas in terms of great food and service. The peach ginger iced tea is great, same goes for shrimp pad Thai, and drunken noodles. I bring everyone here and they all try different thing s and never heard a complaint from them. They brew their own beer and seem to have some interesting drinks/cocktails. They also make a great sriracha sauce. Can't say enough good things, we go as often as we can. Met a friend at West Village w/the intention of having lunch a Village Burger. Decided that asian food sounded better so we decided to try Malai. The "asian fusion" decor was nice. Service was great, the waiter was attentive and fast. We were brought the sticky rice with some type of eggplant dish, which was really good. Ordered the lunch special which was very good. Can't recall the name of the dish but it was flat noodles, with chicken, garlic, some kind of sauce, a little spicy and a little sweet---it was $8 and there was more than enough for me to save for dinner later. Everything was good until the waiter refilled our water glasses with something that tasted like seawater and apparently something was/had burned in the kitchen and the overwhelming smell filled the restaurant. Other than that, no complaints. Definitely a solid place for an inexpensive, quick and tasty lunch. read more

I have been meaning to try Malai everytime I go to West Village. I love West Village for the fact they have a easy free parking garage. Sometimes its pretty busy so will take a few minutes to find an open spot but having a garage is definitely conveinent. I went on a Sunday afternoon so we could order from the lunch or brunch menu. I got the Thai Eggs Benedict which was really tasty! It had a coconut biscuit with shrimp and this spicy hollandaise sauce. Pretty delicious and unique! My cousin ordered the vegetarian pad see ew which she liked, and we shared the vegetarian spring rolls which were fine. She had a bloddy mary and liked it- I didn't try it because I'm not a fan. I had this really yummy drink called Viatnamese Lemonade. It was green tea vodka with mint which was really tasty- not too strong or sweet. Went to Malai for Sunday brunch and I'm officially crownging them the "best French toast of Dallas". I went with a very large group and we sat on the air conditioned patio. Everyone enjoyed the ambiance and overall everyone enjoyed their food, we all raved over the French toast. The Shrimp Pad Thai and Thai Tea were also very tasty. We found this place doing a random search for Thai food for the last night of our honeymoon trip here in Dallas. The food was wonderful, as was the service. We ate out on the air conditioned patio and had a lovely evening meal. The chicken pho was wonderful, and my husband loves soups especially pho, so he would know. It was fresh and just delicious. The spice level was just a bit hot for me at medium, but I am a wimp, my husband likes it hot and medium he said had a kick. So, that tells me a lot, since he likes it really spicy back home and has trouble getting places to get it to a level that he really gets a kick of spice. The chocolate dessert was to die for. The imperial rolls were GREAT! and if I was rating my entire experience just on those and the great service I would have put this review at 5 stars. However, after having such great rolls as an appetizer, I was thoroughly disappointed with the main course. I had some chicken green curry and it was not stellar. It had a lot of potential and the presentation was great, but the flavor was not there at all and the chicken was not good quality (like they had just taken it out of the freezer and cooked it, so the center of it was tough).
