Walked in here at ~8:15am for breakfast. There was not a lot of people yet; we were seated at the bar. After a few minutes, people started trickling down and soon the place was close to being full. I liked the mallorca with ham, bacon, cheese! It was delicious. They looked small but they were filling. The pastries displayed at the window were inviting. If you're dining in, you have to tell your server that you're getting some pastries that are on display then you ask the person at the counter who also serves as the cashier to get them for you. The guava pastry was good. The vanilla bread with strawberry and pineapple/lemon was okay. They looked better than they tasted in my opinion. Payment for everything would be at the cashier after dining. If you're in San Juan, this is a place to try!
One of the classics that are amplified via social media. Here was our experience. AMBIANCE Parking: Old San Juan rules--come early or be ready to walk. Seating: Inside seating, plenty of seating but just gets pretty busy because of how popular this place is. Vibes: Welcome to Old San Juan! Heart of Puerto Rico but also a very touristy spot as well. The attitude changes based on the time of day. When it comes to the early/mid day - brekkie/brunch busy. The spot itself was nothing too flashy just your authentic morning coffee shop with servers busy serving people. Great place to chill, chat, and start up your day. FOOD / DRINKS Mallorca - Regular (Recommend) A mallorca is basically a sweet bread but this one is most known for their ham and cheese. We tried getting their as early as possible but they were backed so we had the regular which was a soft, fluffy, and slightly sweet but powdered with sugar. A nice morning boost of energy to start the day. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Gotta respect the employees for handling the busy rushes time in and out. TL;DR OVERALL 4 Stars. Good food, reasonable prices, and a pleasant experience. A must-try Old San Juan experience. You can get mallorcas in other places but the history here is pretty nice. Not trendy, not curated--but deeply rooted in local culture. If you want to understand Puerto Rican breakfast, this is a great place to start. TIPS * Go early to beat the crowd * Tip your servers
Review #1,046 Posted on 4.26.26 We came here on Thursday the 23rd while in San Juan area for my buddies 50th birthday. This spot we had seen on social media a ton for being famous for their Mallorca sandwich, a special type bread, we got the one with bacon & American cheese. Man, I made the mistake of doing the bacon instead of ham, overthought that deal. I tried my buddies with ham n cheese and I think that was way to go. I loved how this spot had that super old school feel of like a diner. You can sit at one of the table tops, or you can do the countertop too, which has tons of seats, we all were able to sit there. I'd 100% recommend this spot, but get the ham n cheese mallorca sandwich, don't overthink it.
Stopped by for breakfast on a Tuesday morning around 8am. It wasn't busy at all when we arrived and we immediately got a table. We ordered two coffees, cheese Mallorca, Swiss Mallorca, coconut macaroon, and Mallorca bread. The coffees were small but mighty. Cheese Mallorcas were delicious and we slightly favored the Swiss version. I'd get it with ham next time. Super simple. Sweet and savory. From the pastry window, we picked up a Mallorca bread with powered sugar which was amazing. The bread was SO soft and fluffy. Very similar to Japanese milk bread. We also got a coconut macaroon which has a bit of lemon flavor to it. Also good, very sweet. I'd definitely come back and highly recommend!
We were recommended this spot by a local - and we are so glad we came to Old San Juan to find it! We arrived just after 8am for good reason, the place fills up so quick! We sat at the bar top for quick service! You must try the famous Mallorca with ham and cheese - this light flufffy pastry like sandwich is delectable. The perfect balance of sweet and savory. Everything was served on paper plates and plastic cups... nothing fancy, just fantastic food and great local coffee. The service was quick, friendly and yes, he spoke little English but it was quite easy to understand as we don't speak Spanish.
What a charming old-school diner. We were staying around the corner and had walked by a few times in the evenings, when they are closed. I had seen recommendations to try the Mallorcas, so we came back early one morning before 8 AM as we had to catch a tour bus. At that hour it was pretty empty, just the waiter, a cashier, a handful of older gentlemen hanging out, and a couple of tourist groups like ourselves. We all ordered Mallorcas, which are basically breakfast sandwiches of soft thin bread rolls (Mallorcas) with powdered sugar, but come in variations with egg, cheese, ham, bacon, etc. Get any of the variants - not the plain ones, which I don't think come toasted - as they crisp them first with the fillings, then sprinkle the sugar. They were pretty good and cheaper than most other breakfasts we tried in the area. The next morning, we even tried to came back, but it was PACKED at 9 AM so we wandered down to El Meson (fast food) and were sorely disappointed at their version of Mallorcas (to be fair it was dirt cheap there), so I would stick to Cafe Mallorca but COME EARLY! Ambience was old school diner with a long counter and vintage photos of Mallorca and Old San Juan. I wish they would use real plates and cutlery instead of the disposable stuff we found prevalent in PR. Oh and the coffee is nothing special so you fill have to get your espressos or lattes somewhere else.... Oh and the bakery case was filled with what looked like delectable treats but unfortunately we did not get to try those (other than the mallorcas)... next time!
Went from 5 Stars to 1 real quick. Although there are full trays of pastries in the window, they refuse to sell us Mallorca to go. You can only eat on the premises; they are too busy for take-out. Whatever that means. But there are no seats. Does not matter. So we waited and sat at the end of the counter. Where people standing to our left were picking up their to-go orders. No kidding. Plus no air. Server moves like a sloth. Got our order of 4 Mallorcas and 2 coffees wrong. Plus they nuke the coffee. To pay, you are back in 1975 on a long line with the cashier marking every sale in a marble book. And she moves like a snail. All the charm is gone. Mallorca bread is delicious, but it just. Ain't. Worth it.
The sandwich was a 20/10. I saw it in a video and said huh? A what? But you must go try it for yourself. The dining room can get crowded, its seat yourself and then get served, but service was rather quick. Think casual dining. You check out on your way out where you can grab pastries to go as well.
Must visit while in PR for a quick authentic breakfast experience. Beware, there is usually a long line, however it moves super quick due to the quick service. Their breakfast sandwiches are made right on the spot with fresh mallorcas. Their lemonade and orange juice are also to die for! Freshly squeezed! They are also pretty cheap, in comparison to other options in the area. The hype around this place is definitely worth it, making it a must try!
This is quite literally the best surprise I've ever experienced. This constantly comes up as as a must try when in San Juan and there's a line out the door to prove it. Inside, it's a typical cafeteria type restaurant and the poor server we had had a lot of tables to take care of so service was slow but the sandwich is WELL worth the wait. I tried the egg ham and cheese Mallorca. Delicious!!
Foods are great it's a mom and pops place very popular here in San Juan Puerto Rico but you need to stretched out your patience waiting to get your order and for your orders to be served as well only 2 servers getting in all the orders and serving for the price is just right food is good cleanliness i would say 2 stars service is 1 star foods are 4 stars even mom and pops breakfast and brunch place need to step up just saying but of-course first time visitors need to try this
We arrived at 11:00 am on a Friday morning. Since all of the tables were full we sat at two barstools at the bar. A server slid some menus down to us and by 11:15 we were still waiting (and attempting to get the servers attention). When a table opened up, we asked if we could move to it. They said yes. We then flagged down a server to say we were ready to order. He said ok and kept walking. After being ignored for another 15 min, we finally were able to place an our order. We both got coffee, juice and a Mallorca con queso huevo y Jamon. Mine did not have egg. The server did get us another one. Overall the food was ok and the service was so bad that I can't recommend this place nor will I return

Old school diner in Viejo San Juan. The mallorca was a unique and delicious breakfast sandwich made with a Puerto Rico-style sweet roll, layered with a fried egg and ham, and dusted generously with powdered sugar. The classic breakfast order of eggs, sausage, and bread with butter was simple and cost less than five dollars. read more

I was around the area last year but it was closed because it was Sunday. Now I was on a cruise that stopped at Puerto Rico and I had to try the famous Mallorca. It was a sweet bread with your choice of toppings. We ordered one with egg, cheese, and bacon. Then one with only butter. It was very good, it reminds of a croissant and an elephant ear with the power sugar. They also have other type of food that looked delicious. FYI they close around 3 pm. read more
Definitely something to try. My friends and I wanted to grab a quick breakfast before our flight- but be warned that the service is very slow here. When we came in, we were not greeted by any staff, although they looked at us. We heard them tell someone else in Spanish to sit wherever, so we waited and ultimately seated ourselves at a table that was not cleaned off. When the waiter came over, he was pretty rude and cleaned the table, brought us the menus. When we told him we didn't need menus and were ready to order (speaking in Spanish by the way), he said give me a minute and left for 10 minutes. You could see the staff in the back standing and talking to each other. This may just be the vibe of the place, and if we weren't getting ready to head to the airport, we wouldn't have minded how slow it is here. The Mallorca is something different and pretty good. I was disappointed that my "freshly squeezed orange juice" was definitely not so- tasted like Minute Maid OJ. They do have a grab and go pastry section which looked good. Overall, I wasn't so sure why this place is so hyped up, other than the Mallorca being something interesting and different. read more

This was one of our favorite restaurants in Puerto Rico. The breakfast was amazing, just the right amount of sweet and savory with the mallorca breakfast sandwich. I had the ham, egg and cheese one. We loved the breakfast so much we came back for lunch and holy smokes, I was blown away by how flavorful the food was. It felt like I was eating a holiday dinner, I loved the pernil. The toasted bread was heavenly it was perfect. Highly recommend this place. Service was also really fast. This looks like a diner, it has a casual vibe but the food, wow!! read more

Hands down--Mallorca was my favorite dining experience in San Juan. Per the word of mouth of local foodies, I had to go there to try their infamous mallorca. The mallorca is an amazingly tasty breakfast sandwich compromised of: fried egg, bacon, ham on Puerto Rican sweet bun dusted with powdered sugar. The line to get in was wrapped around the block. Mallorca has a 1950s diner feel and is over a 60 years old (someone told me over 100 years in business). Such a restaurant wouldn't be in business for that long if they weren't good. The prices are great. My meal costs $7. Please note, however, that nothing about this establishment is fancy.Food is served on styrofoam plates but it's delicious. Arguably one of the best breakfast sandwiches that I've ever tasted. read more

Two years later, we were back in San Juan. They were being pretty strict with limiting the number of diners, whether because of COVID or limited staff, I don't know. But service was slower this time. No problem with me. What I did have a problem with is they they did away with the plastic plates and mugs and replaced them with styrofoam. I feel like using styrofoam today has to be an automatic one star reduction. Still loved that sweet and savory mallorca with ham and cheese, though. Two breakfast sandwiches and two coffees came out to just over $13. read more

Wonderful mallorcas but very slow very crabby service! We waited at least half an hour before seeing there were two open tables being cleaned very slowly. People walked in ahead of us and sat at the bar, but no one bothered to explain that option to those of us waiting in line. Person seating was unclear and unhelpful about the options to wait for a table or skip the line and sit at the bar. read more

The BEST Mallorca sandwich I've had. I got it with ham, cheese, egg and lettuce. I tried to go to the one down the street but they weren't open at the advertised time. It was so good I had to make a second stop before heading to the airport. With their speedy service and delicious breakfasts, they've gained a loyal customer. read more

We were exploring Old San Juan and wanted some authentic local food. When we walked past here the food looked delicious, the prices were very reasonable and the place was crowded with locals. We hit the jackpot. We took 2 seats at the bar and had a great waiter whom we asked what is a local meal on your menu? He offered us the meat loaf and the chicken. They were both delicious. After some pre-planning we picked Mallorca to try first. BINGO!!!! As you walk in seat yourself. Our server was awesome. He was patient and helped us order. I got the 2 fried eggs and bacon and my wife got the Mallorca with cheese and ham. Breakfast here is the best. Lots of locals and the best coffee in Puerto Rico. I got a coffee to go both days. We were here just after they opened and service was prompt. For the quality, service and price Mallorca is a MUST DO for anyone looking for a great experience. My best recommendation! read more

I never thought adding powdered sugar to a savory sandwich would create such an insanely yummy flavor in my mouth. This place is so good!! I'm dreaming of going back. The place itself is pretty basic looking, nothing special, and seems to be frequented by a mix of locals and tourists. All tables of 4 were full when we got there so my party of 4 sat at the bar which was a great experience! Our waiter was a young college student that was super sweet and shared so much about what to do in Puerto Rico & in San Juan. Overall, you need to try this place out for breakfast if you are in old San Juan! Skip the main menu and just order a Mallorca sandwich read more

Hands down, the best place to try a famous Puerto Rican Mallorca! Hence the name! A Mallorca is basically similar to a grilled cheese sandwich but one step higher- instead of bread, its a pastry, and it has powdered sugar sprinkled on top. It definitely isn't overdoing the creation! You can choose the fillings. I recommend cheese and ham inside. Bacon is also an option. The perfect proportion of savory with a hint of sweetness! There are other options on the menu too, but mallorcas are the highlight! Very cheap pricing. You can have breakfast for about $5! Definitely a pitstop on your visit to San Juan! The staff is very friendly and speaks moderate english. Don't forget to pay for the check at the door! Highly recommend! read more

If and when you come here for breakfast, you gotta get the Mallorca! It's a toasted sandwich that can come with bacon, jamon, egg and/or cheese. For some reason, they throw powdered sugar over the whole thing?!!? Oh, it's legit so don't worry. Their lemonade is made fresh and they add a splash of milk. You won't taste it but it takes the acidity out of the drink. Don't miss out on breakfast. read more

10/10 - completely worth the hype. I had the Mallorca with Swiss Cheese and let me tell you... it was perfect combination of sweet and savory... I still have daydreams about it. If you're someone who doesn't like overly sweet items like me, you'll love this. Also, please note that the 'Mallorca with Cheese' comes with American cheese, so if you don't like American cheese, be sure to order the Mallorca with Swiss Cheese. read more

Service was amazing! My server made me feel welcomed and explained the menu as well as some of the pastries by the window. I ordered a cafe ($1.50),mallorca con jamon y queso($5.25) and a guava pastry ($2.25). You can sit at a table but I sat at the counter and service was fast. Everything was delicious, I would definitely come back to try the mallorca from this location only. read more

This rating is for the Mallorca only. It's was life changing and inspiring. It was my first one and everyone says theirs is the best. The decor, service and coffee are probably 4 stars. However I did meet some friendly people at the next table. Will definitely be back before I leave. read more
This was recommended by Reddit and Yelp as the 'Go-To' breakfast spot in Old San Juan and I can't argue. The dishes are authentic and the menu is fairly extensive for a breakfast spot. I ordered the mallorca and was surprised at how delicious it was. In essence, it is a panini but somehow the sugarly bread made this work. The ham and eggs just complements the sweet bread to provide a warm sensation when you bite into it. I recommend ordering one of the freshly squeezed juices to go with this delicious and filling treat. The only complain is the place is very slow in service. It takes effort to find the waiter and ask him or her to provide a check due to the high traffic coming in. The waitress will also do addition on the check when adding the items, so be sure to double check if the numbers add up, ha. Overall, Cafeteria Mallorca lived up to its hype and provided a decent introduction of Puerto Rican breakfast. I look forward to visiting it again. read more
