Walked in here at ~8:15am for breakfast. There was not a lot of people yet; we were seated at the bar. After a few minutes, people started trickling down and soon the place was close to being full. I liked the mallorca with ham, bacon, cheese! It was delicious. They looked small but they were filling. The pastries displayed at the window were inviting. If you're dining in, you have to tell your server that you're getting some pastries that are on display then you ask the person at the counter who also serves as the cashier to get them for you. The guava pastry was good. The vanilla bread with strawberry and pineapple/lemon was okay. They looked better than they tasted in my opinion. Payment for everything would be at the cashier after dining. If you're in San Juan, this is a place to try!
One of the classics that are amplified via social media. Here was our experience. AMBIANCE Parking: Old San Juan rules--come early or be ready to walk. Seating: Inside seating, plenty of seating but just gets pretty busy because of how popular this place is. Vibes: Welcome to Old San Juan! Heart of Puerto Rico but also a very touristy spot as well. The attitude changes based on the time of day. When it comes to the early/mid day - brekkie/brunch busy. The spot itself was nothing too flashy just your authentic morning coffee shop with servers busy serving people. Great place to chill, chat, and start up your day. FOOD / DRINKS Mallorca - Regular (Recommend) A mallorca is basically a sweet bread but this one is most known for their ham and cheese. We tried getting their as early as possible but they were backed so we had the regular which was a soft, fluffy, and slightly sweet but powdered with sugar. A nice morning boost of energy to start the day. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Gotta respect the employees for handling the busy rushes time in and out. TL;DR OVERALL 4 Stars. Good food, reasonable prices, and a pleasant experience. A must-try Old San Juan experience. You can get mallorcas in other places but the history here is pretty nice. Not trendy, not curated--but deeply rooted in local culture. If you want to understand Puerto Rican breakfast, this is a great place to start. TIPS * Go early to beat the crowd * Tip your servers
Review #1,046 Posted on 4.26.26 We came here on Thursday the 23rd while in San Juan area for my buddies 50th birthday. This spot we had seen on social media a ton for being famous for their Mallorca sandwich, a special type bread, we got the one with bacon & American cheese. Man, I made the mistake of doing the bacon instead of ham, overthought that deal. I tried my buddies with ham n cheese and I think that was way to go. I loved how this spot had that super old school feel of like a diner. You can sit at one of the table tops, or you can do the countertop too, which has tons of seats, we all were able to sit there. I'd 100% recommend this spot, but get the ham n cheese mallorca sandwich, don't overthink it.
Stopped by for breakfast on a Tuesday morning around 8am. It wasn't busy at all when we arrived and we immediately got a table. We ordered two coffees, cheese Mallorca, Swiss Mallorca, coconut macaroon, and Mallorca bread. The coffees were small but mighty. Cheese Mallorcas were delicious and we slightly favored the Swiss version. I'd get it with ham next time. Super simple. Sweet and savory. From the pastry window, we picked up a Mallorca bread with powered sugar which was amazing. The bread was SO soft and fluffy. Very similar to Japanese milk bread. We also got a coconut macaroon which has a bit of lemon flavor to it. Also good, very sweet. I'd definitely come back and highly recommend!
We were recommended this spot by a local - and we are so glad we came to Old San Juan to find it! We arrived just after 8am for good reason, the place fills up so quick! We sat at the bar top for quick service! You must try the famous Mallorca with ham and cheese - this light flufffy pastry like sandwich is delectable. The perfect balance of sweet and savory. Everything was served on paper plates and plastic cups... nothing fancy, just fantastic food and great local coffee. The service was quick, friendly and yes, he spoke little English but it was quite easy to understand as we don't speak Spanish.
What a charming old-school diner. We were staying around the corner and had walked by a few times in the evenings, when they are closed. I had seen recommendations to try the Mallorcas, so we came back early one morning before 8 AM as we had to catch a tour bus. At that hour it was pretty empty, just the waiter, a cashier, a handful of older gentlemen hanging out, and a couple of tourist groups like ourselves. We all ordered Mallorcas, which are basically breakfast sandwiches of soft thin bread rolls (Mallorcas) with powdered sugar, but come in variations with egg, cheese, ham, bacon, etc. Get any of the variants - not the plain ones, which I don't think come toasted - as they crisp them first with the fillings, then sprinkle the sugar. They were pretty good and cheaper than most other breakfasts we tried in the area. The next morning, we even tried to came back, but it was PACKED at 9 AM so we wandered down to El Meson (fast food) and were sorely disappointed at their version of Mallorcas (to be fair it was dirt cheap there), so I would stick to Cafe Mallorca but COME EARLY! Ambience was old school diner with a long counter and vintage photos of Mallorca and Old San Juan. I wish they would use real plates and cutlery instead of the disposable stuff we found prevalent in PR. Oh and the coffee is nothing special so you fill have to get your espressos or lattes somewhere else.... Oh and the bakery case was filled with what looked like delectable treats but unfortunately we did not get to try those (other than the mallorcas)... next time!
Went from 5 Stars to 1 real quick. Although there are full trays of pastries in the window, they refuse to sell us Mallorca to go. You can only eat on the premises; they are too busy for take-out. Whatever that means. But there are no seats. Does not matter. So we waited and sat at the end of the counter. Where people standing to our left were picking up their to-go orders. No kidding. Plus no air. Server moves like a sloth. Got our order of 4 Mallorcas and 2 coffees wrong. Plus they nuke the coffee. To pay, you are back in 1975 on a long line with the cashier marking every sale in a marble book. And she moves like a snail. All the charm is gone. Mallorca bread is delicious, but it just. Ain't. Worth it.
The sandwich was a 20/10. I saw it in a video and said huh? A what? But you must go try it for yourself. The dining room can get crowded, its seat yourself and then get served, but service was rather quick. Think casual dining. You check out on your way out where you can grab pastries to go as well.
Must visit while in PR for a quick authentic breakfast experience. Beware, there is usually a long line, however it moves super quick due to the quick service. Their breakfast sandwiches are made right on the spot with fresh mallorcas. Their lemonade and orange juice are also to die for! Freshly squeezed! They are also pretty cheap, in comparison to other options in the area. The hype around this place is definitely worth it, making it a must try!
This is quite literally the best surprise I've ever experienced. This constantly comes up as as a must try when in San Juan and there's a line out the door to prove it. Inside, it's a typical cafeteria type restaurant and the poor server we had had a lot of tables to take care of so service was slow but the sandwich is WELL worth the wait. I tried the egg ham and cheese Mallorca. Delicious!!
Foods are great it's a mom and pops place very popular here in San Juan Puerto Rico but you need to stretched out your patience waiting to get your order and for your orders to be served as well only 2 servers getting in all the orders and serving for the price is just right food is good cleanliness i would say 2 stars service is 1 star foods are 4 stars even mom and pops breakfast and brunch place need to step up just saying but of-course first time visitors need to try this
We arrived at 11:00 am on a Friday morning. Since all of the tables were full we sat at two barstools at the bar. A server slid some menus down to us and by 11:15 we were still waiting (and attempting to get the servers attention). When a table opened up, we asked if we could move to it. They said yes. We then flagged down a server to say we were ready to order. He said ok and kept walking. After being ignored for another 15 min, we finally were able to place an our order. We both got coffee, juice and a Mallorca con queso huevo y Jamon. Mine did not have egg. The server did get us another one. Overall the food was ok and the service was so bad that I can't recommend this place nor will I return

Went on a walking tour of Old San Juan and he pointed out this place as a must go to place for breakfast. While they have a traditional breakfast the thing to get is the Mallorca which is a traditional breakfast sandwich. It's a soft bun with butter and fillings...Typcially ham and cheese (which is the one I had on my second day.) Then it's covered in powdered suger. Delicious. My first experience was the day before when I went in to get this same delight to go. I was a little less educated on it but asked for the ham and cheese. The gentleman at the counter was a little condescending I'm sure realizing I was a tourist and hurridly got me one to go. But it didn't have the ham and cheese. The one I got the second day, without the attitude was much better. read more
While visiting Puerto Rico visited Old San Juan for some good ol touristy sight seeing. It was recommended to try this place out which is a local favorite. I can definitely see why as it was filled with locals which means it's already certified. The interior is cozy and gives off diner vibes. They have a minimalist traditional style using paper plates and simple menu. It has the feel you are getting food from a family member's house. I ordered the Mallorca which they are locally know for. The best way to describe it is a croissant mixed with a crepe. The Mallorca itself is sweet topped with powdered sugar however, you can fill it with savory ingredients. I thought it's vacay let's get adventurous! So I ordered the Mallorca with ham & cheese. FYI most of the menu was pork so if pork isn't on your fork might want to head on out like sponge Bob. It was oddly satisfying very light and fluffy being in sandwhich form. The ham gave each bite a nice barrier to cut the sweetness. Of course the Pina Colada (virgin) didn't help. They don't serve alcohol but it was so good alcohol would've ruined it. The freshness of the fruits used was present in every sip. I left satisfying full. Overall if in Old San Juan and looking for a local experience definitely try this place out. You will need the energy to walk around the beautiful surrounding area. read more

This place screams traditional Old San Juan. I went here three times during my week stay. The staff is all old men that work really hard to create a welcoming, clean, and happy environment. You can tell that everyone who works here takes a lot of pride in what they do. A lot of locals come in around 9am to have coffee and a mallorca and talk with the staff. Maybe read the newspaper. The coffee is strong and tasted wonderful. Cafe con leche. Every morning this is a great way to start the day! The Mallorca I had came with ham and cheese. They are warm and served with powdered sugar on top. Delicious! My bill for a coffee and a Mallorca was $5! Cheap and tasty! read more
It's a quintessential greasy spoon. Some people like it, some people hate it, but it scratches an itch. I enjoyed my mallorca con jamon, huevo y queso, but I'm not gonna claim this is Michelin-star stuff. It was processed to high hell, but it was a delicious mix of sweet and savory. The wife had scrambled eggs with ham, which came with surprisingly tasty toast -- almost like challah -- that was drenched in butter. As I wrote this review, I bumped it from a three-star to a four-star as I remembered more about how yummy it was. But I came close to bumping it back down to a three when I remembered that godawful coffee con leche. Blech. So hot, it must've been microwaved. I'm not a woo-woo anti-microwave person, but coffee should be hot from brewing. It also took a while to get the check. Really had to get my waiter's attention. But it's oddly endearing g how the waiters wear bow ties but nonetheless bring out food on styrofoam plates. read more

I loved this place! We came specifically for the mallorca and were not disappointed! Who would have thought powered sugar with cheese or ham would be so delicious?! Our waiter must have known this was our first time because he brought us a second one, free of charge, to try without the sugar. My eggs were slightly overcooked and rubbery, but the kids pancakes and bacon were fine. It felt good to take a break from the heat, enjoy some cafe con leche, and a sweet and savory mallorca. read more

Iconic prior to COVID-19, an Old San Juan address and the name of Puerto Rico's famous Sandwich plastered across its marquee, Cafetería Mallorca during Pandemic times is merely average, a lack of Pastries constraining diners to little more than acrid Coffee, Eggs and Pancakes beyond the eponymous dish. Still open 7:00am-3:00pm daily, temperature checks and sanitizer but no social distancing another odd choice atop closing the Bakery, it was after only ten minutes that two petit Sandwiches arrived, the Bread itself crisp and buttery beneath a liberal amount of Confectioner's Sugar while Ham, Bacon, Swiss and Cheddar were under-portioned and far lower quality than what one will find at Kasalta. read more

Mallorca Cafe has this old school charm. It looks aged, dated but in a good way! As suggested by it's name. Mallorca probably the one thing you should order especially if you just want to order something light. Have it plain? Have it with Cheese? Have it like a breakfast with ham? I was here around lunch time and as a lone diner opted for the bar seating with no wait. Friendly waiter and fellow patrons all wanted to help by giving me recommendations. Chicken noodle soup looked really home made as I watched others enjoying that. I opt for a plain mallorca with a coffee. Everything good with some powder sugar overloaded? Great as a snack. Worth dropping by for the old world Puerto Rico experience. read more

in the heart of old san juan. 'famous' place. definitely locals come here. I sat at the bar with a couple of local police. All men behind the counter and immediately served. Black coffee very good. Scrambled eggs ... not so good. dry and a little 'burned' but maybe that's their style? Toast was just dry white bread with big slab of butter (which was needed) plastic forks, I'm sure wasn't done that way in the past. Too bad. Price was good ($10 including tax for eggs, toast and 3 cups of coffee - 1 to go. not bad for relatively expensive old SJ), good service and locals place, but can't bring myself to give it 4 stars for eatery. This is a gem in Old San Juan. The only place we visited multiple times in our stay. On our last day, we woke up extra early to make sure we had time to eat here one last time before our flight out. It's a super basic diner without a complex fancy menu. Just get the Mallorca with egg ham and cheese. Everybody agrees. It's heavenly. Doughy bread (really soft and still squishy - almost undercooked), still warm, delicious powdered sugar, savory ham and eggs. Easily best breakfast in OSJ. Come early. It gets crowded later in the morning. There can be a long line by 10am. At 7, you can just walk right in read more

If you are looking for an "authentic" diner experience in Old San Juan, you won't go wrong. We came here for the Mallorca, a ham and cheese sandwich covered in powdered sugar. Wonderful. Definitely worth the visit This is not a tourist trap. Locals enjoy the small tables and 17-seat fountain. We've been here three times over the years and couldn't recommend it more. Ask for the cafe con leche and Mallorca con jamon y queso. You won't be disappointed. read more

Came here because Bombonera was closed. Mallorcas here were FIRE! Hard to pick which locations I liked more. Personally didn't like the picadillo that I ordered- it tasted like chorizo. I'll be back for the mallorcas :) read more

Walking around the streets of Old San Juan and we stumbled upon this delicious establishment and I'm so glad that we did ! Mallorca gives you the old time dinner vibes , they make and bake all of their satires in your . They also have fresh squeezed lemonade that is to die for. I tried the Mallorca with egg and cheese and it was probably one of the best breakfast sandwiches that I have ever head. Everything that my table ordered nobody had complaints. Do yourself a favor and check this place out when visiting old San Juan read more
Came in for a weekday breakfast. Parked a little bit down the street after struggling to find some street parking. Had Mallorcas for the first time. Had two with different types of cheese. My favorite was the one with American cheese. My only critique is that I wished the bread was fresher as it didn't seem like it was baked that morning. Other than that, I enjoyed it. When visiting OSJ, you MUST make a stop here for the MALLORCAS! Also known as fluffy, buttery bready goodness, generously dusted with some powdered sugar. They have a variety of mallorcas with different fillings, but the Ham, Egg and Cheese is my favorite. It pairs perfectly with their coffee which was also amazing. Our waiter was super friendly and the service was quick. HIGHLY recommend this place for breakfast -- the locals frequently visit (so it must be good) AND it's delicious, fast and very affordable! read more

Mallorca is a MUST come to para desayuno. Los panes (pastries) in the window are even more delicious thank they look in the window as you walk in. The coffee and hot chocolate are excellent as well, and we've never had a better cup of hot chocolate before. The Mallorca's here are really good too, which is a pastry with powdered sugar and with your choice of either eggs or cheese or meat on the inside, we got the one with cheese and bacon, and it was to die for. If we could have breakfast at one place, every day for the rest of our lives, it would be here! read more

Fantastic! The chicken soup, Mallorca's and arroz con pollo were to die for. Easy to find and everyone is so friendly. Great atmosphere. Clean restrooms and clean place to eat. We come every time we visit PR. Will never go anywhere else. A must visit while here! read more

The first authentic Puerto Rican food we had in San Juan. Also my first ever Mallorca Their Mallorca MUST BE APPRECIATED AND HIGHLIGHTED!!! By far one of the best foods we had there. We even tried other spots there that sold it but no other spot compared to La Mallorca. What a damn BLESSING! read more
A cute little diner where mostly locals go. Ie. police officers grab their lunch here. Limited English speaking staff. Delicious food. Quick service. Just perfect portions. I had the pork medallions with rice and beans and plantains. read more
