Coming from LA I was highly recommended to mama dips and I am glad I came. Mama, I'm home! You can't help but feel good among real Southern comfort food here. Whether you're there for breakfast for mama's buttermilk or sweet potato pancakes or for lunch for some catfish gumbo, famous fried chicken or BBQ with a 'mess of greens and homemade biscuits or cornbread you'll be a fan. And don't forget, she makes a pretty mean cobbler too; peach and blackberry are my favorite. Mama Dips is where you go for southern comfort foods. Don't expect healthy. Expect tasty. The fried chicken is their signature dish but I also love the green beans and cornbread. The front porch is awesome and you can usually expect quite a crowd. The wait-staff is friendly and the vibe is cozy. There are plenty of places you can go for healthy, gluten-free and Mam adios does not pretend to be anything but good southern food at its best. Oh and the hush puppies. Scrumptious. read more

Visited Mama Dip's for the first time while visiting my son at UNC-Chapel Hill. I really enjoyed the experience. Good old southern comfort food, but beware if you are on a diet. I ordered the baked chicken breast, greens, fried okra (which I thought would be my indulgence), and cornbread. The server did warn me that the chicken breast had sour cream and mushroom served over rice. OK I thought, I'm not cheating on my diet that much. Well, when my food arrived, the chicken in a ramekin with a decadent cream sauce. So much for the diet ... but the food was delicious. Absolutely loved the fried okra! Prices were reasonable and service was great! I will definitely be back !! read more

OMG!!!! Best Fried Chicken in the area. Mama Dips is exactly what the name implies...."Mama." Upon walking in the parking lot, the smell of fried chicken overwhelms you. The restaurant smells like your mom or grandma's home. Her food tastes like authentic home cooking. I have had the fried chicken, greens, mac and cheese, cornbread, cobbler, & pecan pie. All of them were awesome. Her cobbler was the best. I definitely recommend trying this place. It is pricey but definitely worth it. An entree with sides & bread is $10-12. Very good place. read more

I really looked forward to eating at Mama Dip's after all the hype on various TV shows. Wow, was I disappointed. The prices were outrageous for the quality of food you received. I ordered the chicken fried steak for lunch at $12.95. It was awful! In stead of a crispy fried crust on a piece of tenderized steak, I got a thin slice of ground beef with a soggy breading covered in a brown gravy. The mac-n-cheese had good flavor but the cheese had separated leaving it greasy. My companions got vegetable plates which were bland and not seasoned the way you expect Southern cooking to be seasoned. If you are ever in Chapel Hill, don't waste your time or money on Mama Dip's. read more

This is one of the best places in Chapel Hill if you are looking for some soul food but its not for those on a college budget. While I love home cooking I think that this place is a bit overpriced for the amount of food you get so while it is delicious I go here sparingly but I reccomend it for events like family get togethers and special occasions because it is good place to splurge. read more

Perhaps Mama Dip wasn't in the kitchen or this place is resting on its laurels. I ate a full meal at 3, with nothing to eat all day so this state of appetite should have made the food taste amazing, even if it wasn't. And it wasn't. Chicken and dumplings forgot the chicken; one medium sized peice and the rest could have been from a can of Campbell's chunky soup. Everything was inadequately seasoned - the lima beans were neutral but had they been cooked the Old southern way, they should have been exquisite - no salt, backfat or hamhock flavor to be found. I've had better cornbread in a hospital cafeteria- Sweet pickle potato salad, again unseasoned, didn't even meet the take out standards of Harris Teeter. The fried green tomatoes also needed salt and were only made good by that terrific drippy ranch dressing that you seem only to be able to find in restaurants. For Southern food, cracker barrel - which is road side cafeteria fare at best - beat Mama Dips restaurant on taste and price. If you're a southern cook, as i am, this place will disappoint. Beats hospital food, beats Mcdonalds but not on a taste to price ratio, but otherwise, maybe nostalgia and people too tired to cook for themselves is what is keeping this place afloat. My biggest fear is that this is, in fact, the best southern food the reviewers have had and they don't know any better - that would be tragic. read more

In my opinion, this restaurant is a very authentic southern restaurant. The service was wonderful, nothing to complain about there. But apparently, judging by other reviews, I was just lucky. My only disappointments were that the portions were small and the chicken was of a somewhat skimpy size, plus the biscuits were nothing special. However, I've eaten here twice and it was great both times. Now to the food, last time I was there, I ordered Fried Chicken in gravy which was the best I have ever eaten. The chicken was coated in a light and crispy batter and the gravy was a delicious accompaniment which added a great flavor to the chicken. The mashed potatoes were well-prepared as well. I would recommend that you order the hush puppies as an appetizer, you will not be disappointed. The desserts at Mama Dip's are delicious, mostly consisting of some kind of sweet pudding with ice cream, so save room! read more

Good, 'homemade' southern cuisine. I had been told by many to be sure to check out Mama Dips when I came into town, and I was not disappointed! I went all out: bbq pulled pork, tomatoes & okra, mashed potatoes with gravy, cornbread, buttermilk biscuit, rum raisin pudding and a mango peach lemonade. Didn't love the biscuit or pudding, but everything else was yummy! Not the best I've ever tasted (although the mango peach lemonade was scrumptious!) - but definitely good. Mama Dip's is famous (the owner has a book out about it) for its southern cooking. People travel from all around the area and beyond to come in and enjoy southern staples like fried chicken and okra. I personally don't see the excitement in it all though, because I find everything way too greasy for my liking. Even the vegetables are greasy, as they are covered in butter before they arrive at your table. Where do I start? After being seated we met our server who clearly didn't want to serve us. Firstly, I asked her if the green beans were canned and she replied we don't use can stuff! I ordered the 3 piece fried white meat chicken dinner with mashed potatoes,gravy and green beans. The mashed potatoes lacked flavor and the gravy was like having water onto. No spices were used. The green beans were "canned"! The chicken had no flavor and was tough and greasy. The cornbread was dry as were the biscuits. We paid $40.00 for dinner. We could have went to KFC who knows how to use spices and it also would have been cheaper! If I could have given no stars I would have. We should have left after the server gave us a hard time! Needless to say we will not return. Mama must have sold the restaurant to someone who wants to close it down! Poor Mama!! read more

Mama let me down! The last time I had been at Mama Dip's, I noticed that the chicken was not fried fresh, but, having gone for breakfast at the restaurant every time I have been in the Chapel Hill area, the memories of the fried chicken smothered in brown gravy on grits exerted an almost Proustian pull over me (or more accurately, caused a Pavlovian reaction). This time, my disappointment was very keen when not only the chicken was pre-fried, but also the sweet potato biscuits came reheated and limp (our server did not charge me for them). I politely inquired about the reason for the old-tasting chicken and was told that the kitchen would not be able to fry enough chicken should too many customers order it at once. Well I for one would gladly wait for the pristine pieces that so endeared Mama Dip's to me in the first place, glorious fowl that managed to be crisp and juicy even while covered with lots of gravy. I think I will go back one more time and see whether I can have the chicken of yore again - freshly fried and perfect. If not, it will be breakfast at Guglhupf bakery in Durham every day! read more

I was a bit hesitant because of the mixed reviews, but I'm so glad we went. The fried chicken was delicious!! We got a family size to go order of just the fried chicken and could not have been happier. I had beautiful veggies from our trip to the farmers market earlier in the day so it was a perfect meal. I used to eat here every month or two when i lived here, never had a bad experience, other than being overloaded with fat and cholesterol, but it was yummy. I had out-of-town (northern California) guests, a mom and her little girl, who had a hankering for fried chicken and biscuits. I knew just where to take them. I hadn't been to Dip's for years, and I understand it's been through some changes, but we still enjoyed the meal. The chicken hit the spot, as always. I did miss the bread-and-butter pickles and beets that used to grace the tabletops, but I can imagine why they had to go. The one disappointment, which I've seen in other reviews, was the biscuits. I don't remember what they were like before---I didn't usually order them, since I figure fried chicken is already enough of an indulgence. But my northern Cal guests were decidedly underwhelmed with them. They were expecting fluffy, steaming biscuits, but the ones at Dips' were small and rather hard. There was nothing fluffy about them. The next night, we went to Elmo's, and my guests were much happier with the biscuits there. Being a yankee, I don't know which is the authentic traditional biscuit for this area. read more
