Mama-Ya is one of those downtown spots that makes lunch easy, affordable, and genuinely satisfying. I got the butterfish bento, and it was excellent: rich, tender, savory, and lightly sweet, with that classic buttery texture that makes butterfish so good. The multigrain rice, tamago, pickled ginger, simmered vegetables, and side pieces made the whole plate feel balanced and complete. The service is always great here, and they also have a nice loyalty card program where every $100 spent gets you $10 off. The menu is huge, with bentos, bowls, musubi, sushi, salads, okazu packs, desserts, drinks, and even new mochi products. It is a great grab-and-go option, but the Bishop Street arcade/courtyard setting also makes it a nice place to sit down and enjoy your food. This great lunch spot has a plethora of affordable options! Almost always a speedy line, ready-to-go bentos, salads, musibi, rolls (ahi or shrimp katsu), Japanese curry, and more. They will also make you items to order, including poke over salad or rice, which is a large portion for a great price. The bentos come with a free drink. Spend $10 and have your stamp card stamped...and you get a free $10 meal when you hit 10. Working downtown, I have been able to take advantage of this several times! Don't get deterred by the less than 4 stars reviews on Yelp coz this place could be a solid lunch spot for office workers! It's grab and go but I could tell the food was made fresh in the morning. Lots of variety from salads, soba noodles, sushi, poke, to hot food like salmon bento, shumai, buns, katsu bento, etc. you will find something you like here! The shop is small since it's a grab and go. During lunch time I saw a lot of people keep coming in, fortunately there wasn't a line when I went. The cashier was pretty efficient and still friendly, greeting people with aloha. The shop was also clean. No seating inside but there's plenty outside in the plaza. Best of all, the prices were so reasonable! I got a sushi combo with tuna inari, Korean kimbap, California maki roll, for only $5.99 plus tax. I split it into 2 meals so essentially I only spent $3 a meal! It's hard to find nowadays anywhere, let alone in Hawaii. I placed my order online in the morning for a spicy ahi bowl. It was super easy and quick for me to place my order online (you pay when you go pick up your order). I went to pick it up at around 1:40 PM. It was empty but they still had a lot of pre made items to choose from. I decided to grab a fried saimin. Inside was very clean and organized. There's tables outside where you can sit and eat. When I got to the counter, I let them know that I had an online order. She made my rice and brought out the spicy ahi. I was given a free bottle of water as well. I was very impressed w/ the portion & quality of the fish. I also like how they packaged the fish separately from the rice. When I don't know what I want to have for lunch, I alway end up making my way to Mama-Ya located on Bishop Street in Downtown, Honolulu. What I like about this restaurant is because it offers a variety of delicious to go meals. Its basically an in-and-out shop where they have arrays of already made food you can choose from. My favorite items that they offer are their pork belly rice bowl, their mini loco moco bowls and my all time favorite, their spicy tempura shrimp roll. They also offer salads, poke bowls, a variety of bentos and side dishes like chicken karaage, squid karaage and chicken tempura. You can never go and leave empty handed. In my case, I always end up leaving with too much. If you purchase either a bento or a bowl, they give you either a free water bottle or a side bowl of miso soup. I alway end up with the miso soup because it goes will with all their delicious and savory food! All the times I've gone, I never did experience a long line. I heard that the line can go way outside the door, especially during this Covid-19 period where I'm sure they are taking precautions and only letting a certain amount of customer in at a time. The best time to go is probably right before the lunch rush so you have plenty of options. I'm always grabbing their spicy katsu roll and their poke bowl! After a lunchtime haircut, I went to Mama-ya to pick up a bento. I decided to get a salad with salmon instead. Every bento or salad comes with a complimentary miso soup or a small bottle of water. The salad was delicious. It had grilled salmon and mandarin orange slices. The dressing was very tasty. I usually don't use the whole container of salad dressing but I used every drop. The miso soup was good too. I'm going to continue to search for salad and soup places, but I would buy Mama-ya's grilled salmon salad again. Good grief, have you seen the prices of lunch downtown these days? I remember when $6 for a regular was high, now minis are $7.50! Luckily, there are a handful of places where you can get a decent lunch for $6.50 that doesn't leave your stomach growling at 2 pm.  Mama Ya located in the bottom floor of the four-story office building across the courtyard from the twin Pacific Guardian towers is one of them. Mama Ya offers a mix of self-serve Japanese and local food from donburis, to bentos, poke bowls, salads, and musubis among other options. There is an option to order something off the menu that isn't already made, but it's mostly focused on grab and go. I usually get the spicy ahi poke bowl which is $5.99 for a solid amount of poke, over white rice with radish, and unlike other places, the spice is relatively mild suggesting they aren't covering up junk quality fish with heat. I've also tried their spam musubi as well as seared ahi salad and both were winners. Most of the lunch items are $7 or less, making this place affordable. You also get a free 8 oz water or miso soup with a purchase of a bowl, salad or bento. Lunch crowd can get busy resulting in a significant line, but it's a solid affordable lunch location. Plenty of covered seating right outside of the shop. They don't take American Express. The utensils are located outside next to the seating area. It's a no frills place, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper than paying $10 for lunch. read more

I love Japanese food. While I'm pretty sure that this shop is not authentic Japanese food, I don't care! It is so good and CHEAP! Perfect for someone like me who works in downtown and wants to eat delicious Japanese food on a budget. I know...anyone who has tried Mama-Ya will know that if you go during prime time lunch hour (I'd say 11:30 am - 1 pm), be prepared to wait at least 15 minutes to just place your order. However, I have gone at 11:15 and seen no line (I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming!). Usually, during rush hour there are two lines - one line is to order from the menu, the other line is to pay for the ready-made items (i.e. bentos, musubis) and any phone orders. Usually the line to order will be the longer line. I have not tried their menu items that you have to order; I normally pick up one of their ready-made, to-go bentos. The best part is that the bentos are a ready-made item, so I can use the shorter, faster line. Yay! I always get the garlic chicken bento with the multi-grain rice. The chicken pieces are boneless with a crispy outside and tender inside that is drizzled with the garlic sauce. I like the multi-grain rice because it has additional flavor and it is not crunchy rice (I've had a bento from another place in town that the rice was on the crunchy side - no bueno!). Anyway...the bento also comes with a croquette, arabiki sausage, takuan, watercress, and gobo. The croquette is not super crunchy, but it is a nice side dish to the chicken. The arabiki sausage is slighty spicy. The bento is very filling and tasty...and only $5.50! I also like to grab the crunchy ume musubi for an afternoon snack for the days I know I will be working late. With so many options downtown, Mama-ya has lost the business of both my co-worker and I. We used to frequent Mama-ya for lunch maybe once every two weeks at the very least twice a week at the most. Even with a line, we would still go. My co-worker had completed their stamp card, which meant she purchased over $100 worth of food there and was excited to receive a free bento! However, given vacation and the pace of work she missed the expiration date by a couple of days. She kindly walked up to the cashier to ask if it was ok to honor her card. The staff was rude and dismissive. She said even if it was just one day she couldn't do it and proceeded to ring up another customer. The response and delivery could have been better. There was no aloha spirit. Customer service is key, especially in small communities like Hawaii. One free bento vs. hundreds of dollars in business over a span of many years. Their loss. I had a green tea pudding ($2.50) for dessert, which has a nice flavor but isn't too sweet. Their service time has improved significantly since my first visit. As a new transfer to downtown, some coworkers suggested I eat here. We arrived at around 12:30 and there was a line. My coworkers got the spicy ahi and a variety of pre-made items. The miso butterfish was alright. Wanted to try the multigrain, so I got that instead of white rice and gotta say, ratio of rice to fish was not even....I felt like I paid more for the generous scoop of rice. It also came with a green salad and what seemed like a potato/mac salad. You also had a choice between miso soup or a bottle of water. My other coworker didn't know that so he got miso soup with his spicy ahi, but also ended up buying a bottle of water cause he wanted water. Things I didn't like that much was the wait and that I shoulda gotten the spicy ahi because THEY GIVE A LOT. I know where to get my poke fix for lunch now. After my visit to Mamaya today, I'm not surprised to see a raving review written by an employee to help boost their ratings on Yelp. TERRIBLE service! It was fairly empty since it was after the rush, so I figured it wouldn't be so bad of a wait for a freshly made miso butterfish bento (for my coworker). I grabbed a pre-made somen salad for myself, which looked like it was topped with fish, but it turned out to be chicken haha! The bento did take a little long, about 15 minutes, but my coworker said it was delicious, just like the other locations. The somen salad was okay...chicken was bland and boiled-like, but cheap for such a huge portion. Sadly, every single worker I had contact with seemed to have zero customer service skills. I'd normally blame it on inexperience and lack of training, but the cashier was just plain ole rude. Im sure some will disagree, but for me, I don't care how good the food is, if the workers are asshats, I probably won't go back. Why would I frequent a business that doesn't care about how they are treating customers? Geez, at least look at the person in front of you when taking their order, or a greeting or thank you would be nice! All I got was bad attitudes, blank stares, and both workers left the front to answer their personal cell phones at one point. Apparently their priorities at work do not pertain to customers, or work at all! Anyway, I hope the owners realize what's really going on at this location. Inefficient operations and bad customer service can tank any business within a matter of months. Train and equip your staff for success and ramp up the ordering process before it's too late. Around 11:00 we tried calling and faxing our order in to no avail. At 11:30 I volunteered to walk down to their location on Bishop Street, near Ferguson Pub. The line was almost wrapped around the building when I arrived, but decided to wait anyway. After a total of 40 minutes in line, I was finally in the shop and almost to the cashier. Mama-Ya did a great job with layout, as you walk into the shop, there are prepackaged lunches to go, think Mochiko Chicken plates, Spam Musubi packs, fried noodles and assorted musubis. Though many past reviews criticise the system, I think it only seemed horrendous because of the grand opening discount. On this visit, we ordered: Furikake Salmon Katsu Chicken Katsu Donburi Salmon Oriental Salad Miso Butterfish Carbonara with Bacon and Shrimp Pasta All were super tasty with great sized portions! I love that their food is made to order. All rice dishes have the option of white rice, or their 12-grain specialty rice at no additonal cost. All items also come with a choice of either miso soup or small salad, or a small water bottle. Pretty good deal for sure! Even at regular price, ALL plates are under $10. The Furikake Salmon Katsu comes with three pieces of katsu style salmon, potato salad, small salad and housemade tartar sauce. Miso Butterfish is a generous portion of fish, with rice and dressed small salad.
