Mamaleh's is a really cute hipster deli in Cambridge. My friends and I went on a Sunday morning before we walked around Harvard Square. Two of us ordered matzo ball soup and the other orders were a bacon, egg, and cheese, and the Nova Lox Sandwich. I got a Diet Black Cherry Dr. Brown's and we all got rugalach to share. We were all happy with everything except the matzo ball soup. The broth wasn't what we're used to. We like a more clear strained straightforward broth and this was more of a homey bone broth with a lot of vegetables. Everything else was great and we'd return next time we are in the area. Regardless of the fact that I in general hate breakfast, I make a wide exception for anything cheese blintzes related. Knowing this, when we're in new areas, hubby tries to find me breakfast places that have blintzes so that I can try them out and that's how we found Mamaleh's. We arrived on a Saturday morning, and due to construction on the street, there was no parking to be found near the restaurant. We circled probably half a dozen times before we decided to park a couple blocks down and walk up. It was a very blustery and cold February morning, but the promise of cheese blintzes kept me warm for the cold walk in. Once inside, I was surprised that there were so many open tables given that it was a Saturday morning at peak breakfast time. We were shown to our table and were met by Charlotte our server, who was friendly and prompt and took our drink order for a pot of green tea ($2.90) and coffee ($2.50) whole we looked over the menu. I knew that I was going to order the cheese blintzes ($10.95) and I also ordered a tahini cookie ($0.90) and an order of the latkes ($8.50) to see how they stacked up. Hubby ordered the babka french toast ($10.95) and a bagel ($2.15) with dill cream cheese (+$1.60). I make latkes, tahini cookies, and babka french toast at home, so I'm always interested to see how other people make the same things I do. The first thing out was the tahini cookie. I felt like this cookie tasted exactly like the ones that I make and hubby felt the same. The cookies were buttery, soft in the middle and crumbly on the outside, and packed with what tasted to be a very high quality tahini. The French toast was dense and flavorful and topped with their house made raspberry compote. I felt like the flavors of the chocolate and cinnamon worked well together, however I prefer mine a little bit fluffier in texture. I also felt like the latkes were a bit underwhelming, and had a heavy, oily texture which was probably due to the fry oil not being hot enough, and were the only thing that I disliked. The stars of the show were the bagel with cream cheese and the blintzes. The bagel was perfectly cooked with a toothsome exterior and fluffy interior, and the cream cheese was full of dill and tasted fresh and creamy. The blintzes were almost perfection. For the crepe exterior, it was the perfect combo of crispy edges and soft middle, wrapped around a mix of dairy curd ingredients and lightly sweetened. I was honestly a little hesitant about the raspberry compote because I prefer a blueberry sauce on my blintzes but this was a delicious detour from my usual, and packed a lovely tart punch. The restaurant is open and airy, with a friendly and inviting atmosphere, with great quality food for reasonable prices. They have both upstairs and downstairs restrooms for families and people with disabilities which is nice. When you first walk in they have a lovely area with a deli and a small store for items to take home. Our service was fast, friendly, and our orders were accurate. I was pleased to see how many families were there with their kids enjoying food that tastes like homemade. I would definitely return here even just for the blintzes, and would definitely like to try their sister restaurants State Park and Cafe du Pays after an experience this good here. read more

Perhaps I am being too critical but being from Brooklyn, NY, and having eaten in many kosher deli's, this place just does not cut the mustard. Not only don't they have kinishes or real sour pickles,not dried out half sour, they don't even have mustard on the tables! Now for the food: my wife foolishly ordered tongue, barely edible, with a side of chopped liver. The liver should be a rich brown color with bits of egg & onion, this was more like liver paste, with an off putting color. My pastrami & corn beef sandwich was just passable. The pastrami was dry & not particularly aromatic or flavorful & the CB was stringy & too chewy. My grandkids had a hot dog & matzo ball soup. Dog was OK, but bun was dry & the soup lacked flavor. I know that this isn't NYC & real kosher deli, which would have to be shipped from New York, would be very expensive, but this place should be much better. Wow. Just went for their "Jewish Christmas." It was awesome from start to finish. They accommodated us, when we got there a bit early for our reservation, and the server was fun and attentive. I had the boozy eggnog- so good! Foamy boozy deliciousness (with 3 types of booze, I believe), and grated nutmeg on top. Then we went with some apps and desserts. First was the challah brisket bao- a nice mix of sweet and savory. Tasty brisket pieces! Then the reuben egg roll was great! It was fried perfectly, and the hot melty meaty filling went great with the hoisin Russian dressing sauce. For dessert we got the matcha babka and black sesame sufganyot. The sufganyot (israeli jelly donut) stole the show! I mean, just the presentation- with a homemade fortune cookie on top- was killer. The fortune cookie evoked the "jelly" of the jelly donut. The donut was actually filled with black sesame cream though- which gave a delicious complexity to the standard cream filled donut (very Boston too, to do a cream donut). Had the most perfect birthday brekke at Mamaleh's on Saturday morning. We had a rezzie which I'd say is never a bad idea although we arrived very early after landing in BOS from an overnight flight. I needed coffee and lox ASAP! I enjoyed the yummiest pumpernickel bagel sandwich with cream cheese, lox, onion, and capers. My friend ordered the whitefish bagel sandwich. I was really missing matzoh ball soup from a Jewish deli... Not to mention bagels and homemade cream cheese. We were on our way back to Logan airport and I found this deli online. When I looked at the reviews I thought this would be a great place to stop to grab a bite to eat and purchase bagels and cream cheese to take home with us. What an absolute disappointment to say the least. We ordered a large bowl of matzoh ball soup for two and paid almost $17 for a bowl of tasteless water(far from a chicken broth)that I needed to add so much salt and pepper to be able to eat it. There were two matzo balls in the bowl, It was a lot of tasteless liquid which was definitely not seasoned chicken broth maybe six little scraps of chicken and a very few vegetables pieces at the bottom of the bowl. A server never came to the table to see if we needed anything or how the food was. I definitely would have mentioned it. I don't understand why we were charged so much when a bowl of soup for one cost $6.75. We purchased a dozen bagels and a vegetable cream cheese to go as well. There are almost no vegetables in the cream cheese they might as well call it plain... vegetable cream cheese from the grocery store actually has way more vegetables than theirs. For $7 they could have put some vegetables in the cream cheese. Their prices are exorbitant and the food is not worth the price at all! We have eaten at Jewish delis all over the country much less in other countries and never had tasteless food like this restaurant served. I should've sent it back because it was awful. Obviously all of these reviews cannot be legitimate unless people just don't know what a real Jewish deli serves and offers! If the food was good... I wouldn't even mind paying the price but it was subpar to say the least! At least the bagels were not bad... but that is probably their claim to fame. I would definitely look for a different deli in the area if you want good food that is worth the money! Totally disappointing. I'm from nyc where bagels are sacrosanct. Been in Cambridge less than a week and found myself craving bagels. I didn't want to venture into Boston, so I walked here and found myself pleasantly surprised. I took a risk and bought a bag of six frozen bagels. I read on their website that their bagels are frozen at their peak freshness. And I don't mind a bagel that reheats well. In fact a good bagel should reheat well. Got home and immediately toasted and slathered cream cheese on one. I can say my craving is satisfied. It was really really good. The crust crisped up and the interior was soft, fluffy with just the right amount of chew. This is the best option for bagels if you're in the Cambridge/ Kendall sq. area. Very very solid bagel. This is a large space for a deli. In addition to bagels they sell pints of house made cream cheese, smoked fish, matzo ball soup, latkes, blintzes, other pastries. Check it out. If you're curious it was $11 for the six bagels. During these Covid times, employees had masks on and require you wear one inside. There's sanitizer available. Place was very clean. The best bagels in Boston, hands down. They're fresh, not too dry or soft, have great bounce and chew, not too sugary, and all the toppings options are bountiful. The everything and sesame options are fabulous. They'll do a spot on light toasted to full toasted options. The loaded lox bagel is also the best in Boston. More and fresh salmon, always juicy and fresh sliced ripe tomatoes--so so good, with plenty of super thin sliced onion and lots of capers. Silky smooth and rich cream cheeses. No skimping. I've only tried the cakes from Mamaleh's and the cakes are very good. Mamaleh's is located in One Kendall Square, which is a very nice, yuppy spot. The interior and exterior of Mamaleh's is very clean and it seems like a homey place to take your friends for food. There was almost there when I visited on a Monday evening. The cakes are served by slice or by whole cakes. When I visited, there were two offerings - I was interested in the chocolate cake. At $6.75 I thought it was kind of pricey for its size. But it was so good; it is very rich, dense, and moist. This isn't some light fluffy cake topped with bad frosting. It was very very rich. I would definitely recommend their chocolate layer cake and just wish it was a bit cheaper. read more

This was a lovey dining experience. I haven't been to many Jewish delis, but this really set the bar high. We had a party of 5, and so, we found ourselves looking at the large fish platter. You get to choose some of the kinda of fish, but we weren't sure about some of them (e.g., pickled herring). Our waitress went out of her way to get us a sample of it so that we could decide if we wanted it. She also had some tips about what went best with the platter, suggesting that we get pickled herring in cream rather than in wine to go better with the cheese. We really enjoyed the fish platter. There's so much variety; it was quite filling for our party of 5. I enjoyed all parts of it. My strategy to navigate things: take a bagel, add cream cheese, add some tomatoes or cucumbers or onions, add some fish, and squeeze some lemon juice over it. We also had the latkes and some babkas, which were both warm and comforting. Still, that fish platter was the star. I'm definitely coming back. YES. GO. Full disclosure: I now live in Nashville, which is a deli desert (we have a mediocre Mile End Deli in a hotel in downtown and then a very basic deli in Green Hills that I don't like much). So when visiting Boston this past weekend, I was VERY excited to eat at Mamaleh's. I was in Boston for only 72 hours (my first trip to the city), so Mamaleh's was the only reason I ventured into Cambridge during my trip. Worth it! I was by myself, so I wandered in (around 9:30 on Easter Sunday morning) and asked to sit at the bar. No problem. I got coffee and cream and then agonized over the menu for about 20 minutes. Matzo brei (it was Passover)? Nova benedict on latkes? Sturgeon and scrambled eggs? A pastrami, egg, and cheese sandwich? I settled on the smoked sable fish platter: pumpernickel bagel (not toasted), dill cream cheese, smoked sable, red onion, tomato, capers, olives, cucumber, and lemon. The sable was amazing (and it's not something you can get everywhere, so it was easy for me to pick it over the lox or the smoked salmon or the kippered salmon). The bagel was great. The cream cheese was delicious. I ate everything. Then because I was still excited to be there - I got a vanilla egg cream (milk, seltzer water, and syrup). I felt like a kid! Delicious. I want another again right now just thinking about it. If I lived anywhere near Boston, I'd be at Mamaleh's once a month easy. Because there are still a dozen things I want to try on the brunch menu and then there's the lunch menu! Pastrami and chopped liver on seeded rye! Hot pastrami on seed rye! Chopped liver sandwich! Pastrami bacon sandwich! Chicken schnitzel sandwich! And then there are the deli staples I haven't tried yet: knish, latkes, noodle kugel, matzo ball soup... Mamaleh's is a hip Jewish deli owned by the same folks who own Café du Pays in the same neighborhood. The menu has a lot of everyone's favorite Jewish staples, like bagels and lox, and some more modern Americanized dishes, like seasonal salads and French toast. Tasty! The diced beets surprised me and added a bit of sweetness to the sandwich. It doesn't traditionally come with mustard, so I got some on mustard to accompany the Rachel. The right choice again! Mamaleh's nails the food and vibe -- I loved both! I had the lox sandwich, and the toppings were superb. The salmon was fresh and the bagel made me want to buy a bag to take home. The matzah ball soup was perfectly comforting on a cold day and had nice subtle flavors. I also ate some of their pastries and the babka muffin was so good! This place is the Jewish Deli of my dreams - great atmosphere, great food, great take out options. The entire places feels warm and welcoming and I love that they contrast their traditional food with modern decor and trendy drink options. The fact that you can have a full service sit down meal or swing by their deli counter is so great too. I work across the street and will definitely be coming here again and again. I started off with with the fruit salad which was super fresh and topped with silan (date honey) which I literally thought was chocolate at first - I had to go back to check the menu because it was so sweet and tasty. Paired this with a Cappuccino, the coffee was pretty good (nothing amazing) and the presentation was lovely. I'm a big fan of a classic bagel with lox and can be hard to impress - but their Lox Sandwich with Smoked Nova was everything I wanted and more. I'm a big fan of the dill cream cheese. My mom went with the L.E.O. and let me tell you that Challah roll looked GOOD.
