Remains one of our favorite breakfast/lunch spots in all of JC/Hoboken. So much so that we frequent this location despite living in NYC and having other locations nearby. The food never disappoints (can never go wrong with their fresh chocolate croissant, the quiche, or a personal favorite--the Papa's Bowl; their fine teas and hot chocolate are also very good) and service is excellent (Gles is the best). The staff is friendly and attentive, even when busy. It can get a little busy in the early afternoon causing a short wait, but it's still a breath of fresh air compared to the hype around crammed bottomless brunch spots that are paired with subpar food in the surrounding area and city. The place just opened a couple weeks ago so I want to give it some slack, but some things are just tough to avoid. Let's just say that you might as well wait for a table because if you want to get to-go, you'll be waiting just as long! When we arrived there was about a 30-40 min wait. Nicely decorated interior, but decided to get To-Go since the wait was a lot and recent reviews said they were slow (boy were they right!) They have a separate To-Go line in the back of the cafe. We ordered an iced latte and the honey lavender latte, with banana walnut bread and white chocolate pretzel cookie. For some reason, the person taking our order just stared blankly while we ordered, and then asked if it was To Go (obviously since we are in that line?) and then asked again and started entering it in the system. While we asked to get our bread heated up, we were ignored for a bit and then someone else said "oh the kitchen is busy, we cant" in a very rude tone. Surely this couldn't have been THAT odd of a request?? Then we were told "Oh dont worry the bread just came out"....um no we have been standing here for SO long and the bread only had 3 slices left, we know it didn't just come out. Waited about 15 mins for the coffee, the 1 person making them seemed SO behind, so frantic. Got the iced latte, then another 6 mins until the lavender latte. No lids, no sleeves. Iced latte was standard and the lavender latte was eh, wouldn't get it again, tasted kind of like a candle. Banana bread was ok, standard. The cookie was disappointing, very buttery and no softness to it at all, a little burnt. I am second guessing coming back to this, and surely will get a similar copy and pasted response about just trying to iron out the kinks since they just opened. There seemed to be a few workers just doing nothing, they dont seem to be well organized even though a manager would be going back and forth trying to make things work. Would I be back? Maybe in 2 months when they get their act together? But the overall rude tone, lack of customer service, disorganization of the staff and quality of the overpriced food doesn't make me eager to return. I dont mind spending 20 bucks for drinks, bread, and a cookie, but atleast make it worth it! read more

This is a cute spot, the Jersey City waterfront outpost of a Manhattan (and other places) French bakery chainlet. The quiches were decent, chocolate croissant yummy, and lavender rose latte tasty. Mostly, this review is for service disorganization, several witnessed mistakes with prepared orders, over catering to self-important influencers, and long waits for both a coffee drink and a food item that was ultimately unavailable (told to me several minutes after ordering and paying). The door is confusing: do I wait in line just inside the door if I just want counter (and not table) service? The answer is no, you can go straight to the counter for to go orders. The counter area was chaotic, with an unclear queue, only one register, and some items out of stock (for ex. the quiche lorraine). I don't know if the item I paid for cost more than the secondary option I was given; also, no apology was offered for the missing item. The place was busy and buzzy in its second open weekend. The decor is cute and the cafe more spacious than most in our immediate vicinity. The quiches turned out to be ready and packaged 10-15 minutes before my latte, so they were cold by the time I returned home, just a 2 minute walk away. I hope that Maman will cultivate a positive relationship with those who live in the neighborhood, not just being content to operate as yet another upscale Manhattan-centric chain (like Bluestone Lane) that has come to our 'hood. They could consider a repeat customer discount or partnerships with local businesses, apartments, and neighborhood associations. I live close and my household is destined to be regulars, but we also want to feel warmth from a new place as it enters our community. This was a soft opening, so I hope that my experience of waiting in line behind a self-identified "influencer" is not indicative of how Maman will prioritize its customer service. The influencer had many minutes to look at a menu (on the wall or one of the many copies on a hook before the register) before she got to the front of a busy line. But she didn't, and instead asked a ridiculous number of questions of the harried counter staff and manager as the line grew long behind her. The staff did eventually pull her to the side, but they seemed fearful of offending an influencer, while still offering her something(s) for free, instead of keeping the line of hungry and patient locals happy. Like I said, I'll be back when things settle down, but let's not replicate the Manhattan self-importance on this side of the river. For now, I'm still partial to Semicolon and One Two Cup Cafe. read more
