Finally got around posting my review from our recent lunch at Mambo Seafood. I brought my aunt, uncle and cousin along last Saturday, and we all really enjoyed the experience. Our server Tyler, was excellent--super attentive and answered all of my aunt's questions about the food and the place with patience and detail. My first visit here was for the Elite Event, and I enjoyed it overall--except for the salsa verde, which was too salty. My aunt ordered the Empanada Costena and the Calamari to start. She absolutely loved the empanada, and everyone agreed the salsa verder could use a little less salt. The calamari, on the other hand, was delicious--crispy and flavorful. I couldn't get enough! For my main course, I went with the grilled Tilapia from the Mambo Classis set menu, paired with a salad. It was perfectly cooked and packed with flavor--I finished every bite. The rest of my party orders Grilled snapper, Mambo Fried Fiesta and the Sliced Sautéed Octopus. Everyone enjoy their meals and the portions were so generous that they even had left overs. I prefer the Brooks location but this location was closer and I wanted to use my $5 off birthday reward. Sadly, they no longer have lunch specials. I ordered Mambo classic #4, 15 medium fried shrimp, side of fried rice and a roll. I always check my take out boxes. Digging through the fried rice with a plastic spoon, I didn't see many shrimp. The employee returned the box to the kitchen where they added more small shrimp. The fried shrimp are butterflied and on the thin side, not plump as shown in the picture on their website. We had a bad experience the last time we were here and decided to give them another opportunity but the food is still horrendous . My boyfriend had fish and shrimp and the fish was overcooked because it was so dry, he said the rice was greasy. Great food, ambiance, and service--it's really nice to see the old Joe's Crab Shack back in action with a San Antonio twist. Huge location with lots of seating indoors & outdoors. Right when I walked in I noticed it was pretty empty. I was greeted right away and was assisted. I was here for a Yelp Event. So I was treated to some good food, and a margarita. I had a few oysters that my friend ordered and they tasted very fresh and clean. Their house chelada was tasty as well with a bit of a kick. My grilled fish and shrimp were cooked perfectly and the side of fries and rice were well made as well. I have not tried the regular seasoning, but the Z-style seasoning was a nice zesty chili rub that I would order again. Good fish food with A1 service. We came after the lunch rush, so there was plenty of room. It was a beautiful day, and could have eaten outdoors on the porch, but we decided for a table inside this time. The empanadas costenas were delicious, the pre-entree pastries were filled with fish and shrimp. The fried dough didn't have too much hint of grease, but tasted fresh. We also tried the fried salmon balls, which were filled with salmon, chopped jalapenos, and light stuffing. They were pretty good. I tried the Mambo Combo and, tbh, I should have just ordered that. it was good, the shrimp fried rice is amazing. Because the combo comes with two sides, I doubled up on the rice. The plate comes with stuffed shrimp (1), stuffed crab (1), fried jumbo shrimp (4), and fried fish (2). It was a lot... it was pretty good too. Go get your military discount! Tuesday, Nov 28, 2023 my daughter and I went to Mambos Seafood for lunch. It's a nice restaurant. I placed an order for 3 fried fish fillets which came with shrimp fried rice and an orange soda, I asked the waitress what kind of fish was served, thinking it was catfish. She did not know so she went and asked another employee. He told her "BATA"! Of course I had never heard of this fish so I looked it up on the internet. My daughter did not get sick, we ordered different meals. (Bata information at the end of review)" Arriving home maybe two hours later, my stomach started cramping and I got Diarrhea (we will simplify and use D). I went to bed with bad stomach cramps, nausea and D. I was afraid to eat or drink anything. I could not go to the doctor so my daughter called their office and was given a number to call the Medical Team Staff. The medical team staff arrived at my home, took vitals and stated, yep food poisoning! I was given an IV and medication for nausea. Today is Thursday, I have not eaten since Tuesday, I am afraid to eat due to fear of D. I am so thirsty, I want a glass of ice water so very bad, but my stomach still cramps. I have been sipping on Orange Crystal Light drink packages. I have eaten at many restaurants from my reviews in San Antonio and other cities, this is the first and last time I get food poisoning, now I am afraid to dine outside of my home. All I want to do is be quite and sleep to avoid the stomach cramps. RECOMMENDATION: My recommendation for my family, friends, neighbors is don't dine at Mambos. Some of the public may have had a great experience, but I did not. Had the pleasure of visiting this establishment on Veteran's Day weekend. They were offering a really nice 30% discount for those associated with the military (Active and Veterans). HOOah! There's been a lot of buzz around town about this place so I had to make an extra effort to slide in here and see what it was all about. I thought the fried rice was probably once of best parts of the meal. This place is not a high-end seafood restaurant. The seafood is average, the prices are average and the service is average. I think it's great place to go if you want to take the family out to get seafood, everyone gets full and you don't have to spend a lot of money. We had a person in our party that did not eat seafood and the waitress told us that "all"of the friend rice was cooked with seafood. Upon inquiring with the manager, we realized that we could get cook-to-order fried rice with no seafood. Additionally, our waitress spoke to us in 90% Spanish and that was a bit annoying because most of the people at the table did not speak Spanish. She zoomed in on those that spoke Spanish and she communicated with them for everyone's order. I also think this was part of the confusion regarding ordering fried rice with no seafood. I didn't know what MAMBO was until I spent time in the 956 * RGV VALLEY. So you bet your bottom, when my husband and I found out it was FINALLY coming to SATX, we were doing our happy dance. I like this location a LOT. It's CLEAN and SPACIOUS. There are a lot of tables, both inside and outside PLUS they have a playground. How many sit and eats do you know with a playground?! My ABSOLUTE favorite is the Empanadas Costenas. Creamy, gooey cheeses w/ shrimp + black bean make this a MUST to try. Each order gives you 3, and we usually end up ordering 2 of them because like *GET IN MY BELLY* It comes w/ a green spicy sauce -- not salsa verde -- but better. My toddler LOVES the famous mambo shrimp rice and we either usually get the large portion by itself or another platter w/ that as a side. Don't let the pictures deceive you.. the pepino drink was not as good as it looks, the chamoy was great... the red snapper frito I got was not all that, it wasn't crispy enough.. the $22 oysters didn't seem fresh.. they tasted kinda weird. Visited this place since I was back in Texas and had eaten at Mambo's in south Texas like 10 years ago. The service was excellent and the manager even stopped by our table to see how our meal was going so that was nice. The overall experience was good and pleasant. The restaurant is very clean and looks remodeled in new on the interior and exterior. Ambiance is Mexican Marcos type of restaurant. As for the food the shrimp cocktail is served a bit different than most restaurants. It's served on a plate with cocktail shrimp and a little bit of red sauce which I'm guessing is a Clamato/cocktail type of sauce. As for the whole tilapia which I had was good and had good flavor. The rice was delicious and if you know Mambos they are known for their shrimp fried rice and as always it was delicious! If you are in the mood for Mexican type of mariscos or seafood, this is a place you should consider. Is it awesome? Probably not awesome but it's good and will certainly hit the spot. Came here for Culinaria Week because they had the best lunch specials of all the restaurants we checked out. This is a bit of a drive for us because we live in Selma, about 25 minutes and it was well worth the drive. The environment is very bright, open, and clean. I thought the restaurant was brand new and was surprised to hear they've been open for a year. We were greeted quickly by our server Nautical. She was really nice and did a fantastic job assisting us even though it was just her 4th day on the job. We order the empanadas and mambo style shrimp for our appetizers. The empanadas had a nice crust and filling was tasty. The mambo shrimp is you peel em but the GM stated you can also order them already peeled. The sauce that is served over the shrimp is DELICIOUS! Even more incredible when you pour it over rice. The GM stopped by our table to check on our experience, which is rare nowadays, as we were sampling our appetizers. Thankful for the added effort on his part. For our mains we ordered the Mambo #1 (fish and shrimp) of which my pic is missing 5 because I ate them before the pic. Batter was nice and light and zero grease. Cooked to perfection! My wife had the grilled Monterey chicken and it has a nice Smokey taste to it. Equally as impressive as my meal. In San Antonio for a medical visit and saw this place. As soon as we entered we were greeted and seated. The entire staff was SO friendly. Raul was our server and he was super awesome. My father was very hungry but I wasn't so I thought I would eat a little and take leftovers. The grilled octopus seemed like a good choice since that's not something offered at many restaurants. My lord!!! It was so good with the mambo sauce. Not chewy like a badly cooked octopus but perfect. The rice is hard to describe because the picture looks like Chinese fried rice but it's not.
