This was a simple, but special night. We were celebrating the 33rd anniversary of our first date. We arrived a little early. From the valet putting our car right by the entrance, the young woman who greeted us, the maître d' asking us that if we waited a few minutes (this is prior to our reservation time) that he would get us a better seat (we ended up with the best seat and view in the house), the server being friendly, thoughtful and kind, the excellent food, and even a complimentary limoncello for each, the evening was perfect. Loved this spot. It's in a nice little area in the city, surrounded by bars and restaurants. The restaurant itself is super small, or seems to be, and then you walk in and they take you through a maze and you realize how large the restaurant actually is. The host was accommodating in showing us the menu *Pro Tip: it changes daily! Ambiance: The outdoor seating consisted of about 10 tables or less spread out in the center area right outside the entrance of the restaurant. There was small table lighting for once it got dark and nice linen tablecloths and napkins at each setting. Price: The average starts at 20 for anti-pasta or appetizers / smaller dishes, so it is a bit pricier. However, the quality and unique flavors are very worth it! Food: We got an appetizer of fresh warm soft centered yet crispy crust bread with in-house pickled olives and light pesto sauce. The pastas are made fresh in-house and absolutely delicious, cooked to perfection and paired with savory creamy sauces and scrumptious sides/add ons! I ordered the lobster ravioli, which turned out to be a slightly bigger portion than expected, perfectly portioned filling to pasta ratio. The vibes here are wonderful. It's very authentic and has a warm north end feel. The staff here is welcoming, I couldn't have asked for a better wait staff at the bar. They got me in with no reservation right before game 1 of the NBA finals. I got very lucky. The Lobster Agnolotti I had was average. The pasta itself was great and so was most of the filling. The lobster was a bit chewy though. It definitely took away from the rest of the dish. I would rate the dish overall a 3, but the staff and vibe bumped my score up. There are so many choices in the north end but this one needs to be on your list. I had made a reservation on a Friday night for 6:30 but our train from NY was running an hour and a half late so I called to see if I could move the reservation and they totally accommodated it. It was my cousins birthday so I was so relieved. The restaurant is so cute! It was 2 stories and had a beautiful patio area as well. We were seated on the second floor and it was so nicely decorated. We ordered a red bottle of wine and I placed our food order below. Pasta is made from scratch and the menu changes constantly so they don't do "specials". Complimentary fresh bread with pesto (no nuts for anyone with allergies) that was outstanding. Beef carpaccio- so nice with tangy capers, bitter arugula and fresh Parmesan slices. The meat was so fresh. All the flavors were great. Burrata with croutons. Creamy yumminess! Lobster pasta- holy cow. The sauce was super light and the pasta was stuffed with huge chunks of lobster. It was AMAZING! I ate every bite! 2 types of pasta- one was a tortellini and one was a ravioli. One had meat and one had veggies. My husband really enjoyed it and cleaned his plate! Rabbit pasta- our friend had not had it before but loved it. He said the pasta was amazing. Rustic pasta- my cousin absolutely loved it. She said the red sauce was so flavorful and the pasta was so fresh. Since it was my cousins birthday, they gave her a dessert and it said happy birthday in cinnamon. It was gorgeous and the dessert was very tasty. Our server was lovely and we had a great time. A pretty cute restaurant tucked in an unassuming place in North End. Came for a celebratory dinner with some friends and the service was pretty amazing. I got one of their signature dishes, the osso bucco, which is one of their signature dishes and will not come off the menu. It was really good but a bit rich for me. This is a very popular restaurant for a reason! Great location and building in the North End. Elegant but homey decor. Second floor seating did require a climb up two sets of steep-ish stairs. Not sure if they have an alternative entrance for those who have any difficulty walking. Service was friendly and highly professional with the waiter and sommelier very knowledgeable and cheerful. Support staff also get kudos for friendly prompt service. We enjoyed a tasty Aperol Spritz and a rosé Prosecco along with the bone marrow and steak tartare appetizer. So darned good! The lobster pasta was okay. The rabbit pasta was amazing. Was planning on dessert but they left us waiting so long that we decided just to leave. Service was horrible. Entire meal was over an hour and a half. Spent a lot of time sitting around without food in front of us. Had to repeatedly ask for a refill on water and soda. Oh yeah they charge you for refills on soda and they did even bother to fill the cup all the way up. Had to ask twice for the check. Finally got a waiter that wasn't ours to get our check. Adorable corner restaurant in the heart of Bostons Italian district. We had a late reservation which I normally dislike as I hate to eat late but in this instance it made for a better experience for us. The rooms are small and the tables are close together making conversation a little difficult so being later we were able to enjoy the ambiance with all the people around us as well as enjoy each other's company once the other tables left. We started with the carpaccio which was amazing!I had the Duet of Pasta which was unlike any pasta I have had before. The squash ravioli I will never forget! Hubby had a waygu steak that he said was excellent, and being from Montana that says a lot. For dessert we shared the Napoleon which was the perfect way to end a fantastic meal. Wow. Just wow. We went to Mamma Maria because we read they have the best Osso Buco in Boston. It did not disappoint. They have been preparing their Osso Buco in the traditional style the same way for 30 years. The Osso Buco was served on a bed of saffron risotto with crisps on top. Amazing. For antipasti we had grilled octopus and calamari prepared with fingerling potato's, capers, olives, in olive oil. The octopus and squid had a perfect char. The restaurant is charming in what appears to be an old converted house and the service was impeccable. We were fortunate to have Ovi and he was diligent and delightful. read more

So much to love about this restaurant and yet... We were seated quickly at our table. Water and bread, with pesto and olives were served. Pesto was excellent as was the bread. The bread was warm and had a chewy texture. We ordered drinks and an appetizer. The tomato and mozzarella appetizer was divine. Tomatoes were poached, and light and acidic. Entrees, I had halibut and vegetables. The fish was perfectly prepared. My friend ordered the beef tenderloin. She was rather disappointed as it was quite chewy. Dessert was called Chocolate. It was chocolate torte with whipped cream. Quite good. As noted portions are large. My issue with the restaurant is noise. We were in the middle of four tables that had maybe six inches between them, likely less. And short of shouting we could not have a conversation. Quite unpleasant. Especially for the prices. Also the service was excellent but we waited far too long for our food. Easily 15 minutes after the appetizer was removed before the entrees showed up. Would we go back, perhaps. Be far better if they removed a few tables so you could talk with each other. read more

My wife and I had a very disappointing experience here last night. After waiting nearly 40 minutes for our entrées, they finally arrived at the table cold. When we brought this to our server's attention, instead of an apology or an attempt to make things right, we were met with rudeness and condescension. To make matters worse, the manager was called over and treated us with the same dismissive attitude. At no point did anyone apologize or try to improve our experience. Dining out should feel welcoming and enjoyable, but unfortunately, we left feeling disrespected and dissatisfied. We won't be returning and cannot recommend this restaurant. read more

WOW! Mamma Maria made my wife's birthday celebration very special. They delivered what they probably do daily: excellent service, food, and a unique experience to every patron. This is an authentic Italian restaurant with Italian food that lives up to everything the North End of Boston is supposed to be. The server was excellent, the ambiance perfect, and the food came in large portions that we could barely finish. We started with the quail and tuna tartare; my wife had the lobster pasta, and I had the game hen. Everything was delicious. We went to Boston to celebrate my 40th birthday last month. It was Friday night and everywhere was busy. My husband and I stumbled upon Mama Maria. We were seated outside, which was perfect for that night. Staffs are very attentive and food is really really fresh! The mushroom ravioli is to die for. My husband (a chef) who doesn't like mushroom asked me for more. I came from New Jersey and never have had better Italian food than this (I normally steer away from Italian restaurants anyway). So, it's a treat go to this restaurant. I think I'd have rated it higher had it cost ¼ of what it cost. The people and service were impeccable. The food was nice. We got duck confit to share as appetizer, lobster agnolotti and rabbi pasta. The pasta was very good, but thicker than I like. The rabbit was quite tender and taste identically like chicken. The lobster agnolotti were good. The warm bread with pesto and olives to start was a BIG hit. We also split the lemon pan cotta and the aphrodesiac, which was the highlight of the night. It was Prosecco poached slices of blood oranges with flavored marscapone. That dessert was unlike anything else I've had. We are going to recreate it at home. The guests were dressed nicely, so quite dressed up. The valet guy was wonderful. I'd read so much about the rabbit and the lobster and really expected more from it. read more

We had another FABULOUS meal last night at our 'go to" Boston restaurant Mama Maria's!! Mike, as always, was a terrific waiter and Mo, the host, was so gracious. The bus-person was sweet and attentive. Kudos to the Chef. Each of our entrees were stellar - the 'Lamb Three Way' perfectly done with delicious sauce on each one. And the Beef Carpaccio was perfect in every way. The Chef's stuffed crispy rolls of cucumber in a whipped sauce topped by excellent tuna tartare - heavenly. Went to Mamma Maria with my wife and daughter and had probably one of the better meals we've had which is saying a lot. Neat restaurant with a great atmosphere. The carpaccio was outstanding and the bread done perfectly. I had the Rabbit which was very good but not excellent - the rabbit was tender and well seasoned and the pasta nicely done. My wife and daughter both had the Lobster Agnolotti and they raved about it. Excellent service. Will definitely be back. Mamma Maria has excellent pasta and truly delicious tiramisu, but unfortunately, the service fell short of expectations. The initial phone conversation was confusing and unhelpful; I was advised against coming and was told they couldn't put my name on a list. I went to the website and managed to make a reservation myself, and despite arriving 15 minutes early, we were graciously seated right away. Our waiter greeted us briefly but left us waiting for nearly 10 minutes before taking our order. My glass of wine arrived after my food, which included a scrumptious bison gnocchi and a beet salad that was supposed to come with watercress but had parsley instead. I would have appreciated being informed of this substitution. Service was slow and inconsistent--the entrée, a bland game hen over lentils and fantastic duck pappardelle, was served without a fork, and it took several minutes to get one while our waiter meandered without urgency. For dessert, I ordered tiramisu and amaro on the rocks, but the amaro arrived neat, and we had to wait yet again for the tiramisu, which was, fortunately, as delicious as the pasta. The food was wonderful, but the poor service detracted from the experience. Truly unfortunate as the cuisine deserves better support from the service staff. read more
