My first time here was a while ago during the pandemic. The service was good and so was the food. My first meal was calamari and lasagna which was really good. I was happy to return recently while in the area. Possibly the wrong day, the wrong menu selections, I don't know. My husband ordered a burger and fries. His burger looked like it was toasted on butter and left him feeling I'll. I ordered the beef cheesesteak and it had no flavor other than the grilled onions. I asked our server three times for hot peppers and after thirty minutes and three reminders, he brought out a saucer with sliced raw jalapeños. By that time I was half way done eating and found it distasteful. To their credit the restaurant was busy on a rainy afternoon so that's days a lot for them. After driving past the is place multiple times without so much as a second thought, on a busy errand full Saturday, I was hankering for something new. With an unassuming exterior that fails to give context clues about the cuisine cooked up inside, I went with my gut (a rather noisy and cranky gut i might add) and crossed over the threshold. When I walked in, I was pleased at how elegant and spacious this strip mall restaurant felt. All the deco, mood lighting, and soft background music made it extremely inviting. We were sat quickly and given ample time to peruse the menu. On to the food. After seeing that this ma's kitchen was Mediterranean infused, and craving something light and lunchy for the errands that lie ahead, I went with the gyro platter. Boy were my assumptions wrong. This was a heaping helping of the most succulent gyro meat I've ever had. It came with a fantastic Caesar salad with freshly shaved Parmesan and the softest warm pita ever. When I heard Momma's Kitchen was a Greek Italian place, I was excited to go. I spent 2 years stationed on the Greek island of Crete, was married in Athens and my wife is an excellent Greek cook, we like Greek food. Momma didn't disappoint. I had the Gyro, I mean if you judge a burger place by the burger then you should start with gyro at a Greek place, right? Sound logic that worked in my favor. There was so much meat! It was seasoned well and there were lefty of tomatoes, lettuce and onions added. They put crumbled feta inside and had fresh cut fries on the side. I'm used to tzaziki sauce inside with the fries, so this was a change- but a good one. The staff was friendly and the menu was fairly priced. There is parking outside and a patio too, but it was cool and breezy today, I'm inside for sure. It looked like the surrounding tables all had pizza, and that pizza looked GREAT! My next time here will be for pizza for sure, but what I saw and had was enough to make me want to come back here soon. read more

I will stick to the greek side of the menu in the future! I was craving italian food the other day and Mamma's Kitchen seemed like a good choice. I'd been to Mamma's Kitchen once before and enjoyed the pizza and greek salad so I had great hopes for their Italian fare. I ordered Chicken Parm and a greek salad. The salad came out first and was the one and only positive of the meal. My main course was very pretty but the chicken in the chicken parm was crazy thin with thick breading all around and not flavorful at all. It was covered in red sauce that was too sweet for my taste and melted cheese and came with a side of pasta also covered in the too sweet red sauce and bland buttered sliced bread. The meal was a pretty big let down but Im still giving three stars because of the salad and pizza I had the first time I ate here. This place is convenient for me so I will probably come back but only for the pizza or greek side of the menu. read more

The lamb dish. Huge lamb on the bone. Falling off the bone. So tender. Only served on Friday and Saturday!! Know why? Slow cooked over flowing with spices. The description doesn't do it justice!! The blend of spices is amazing. The cinnamon is perfect. And not overly sweet. I had it with pasta. You can choose what kind of pasta you like too! Nom. Nom. It comes with a salad and garlic bread. The greek salad was good. Enjoyed the dressing. The garlic bread wasn't very garlicky. But maybe it was because my dish had a lot of garlic??? Anyways the bread was good to sop up the sauce... Yessss! What a great and somewhat hidden find! Great service the waiters were super friendly and the restaurant was cute and cozy. Tried this place when I visited a friend in Alexandria, we were a group of 6 and had a seat in the patio early evening. The service was great, the waitress was wonderful, we ordered quite a few appetizers, onion rings were not upto the mark and when mentioned the waitress was happy to take them off and off the check too. I usually want to visit a place a few times before offering my thoughts, and I might return one day. If I do I will post an updated review that might completely change. That said, I was disappointed with my lunch the other day. I wanted to treat myself after having a frazzled day and this had not been on my radar, but my trusty yelp app assured me that this was going to be way better than the endless sea of chain restaurants lining that stretch of Richmond Highway. I was less than impressed with my lunch special, the lamb gyro with French fries. It looked good and once I seasoned the sizzling fries, it seemed like I was in for an unforgettable gyro. Rather than unforgettable, it was unfortunate. The tomatoes were mushy and the first bite consisted mostly of raw onion, soggy pita and a generous amount of feta cheese. So, I started to deconstruct the wrap a bit and reorganized the meat to topping ratio for my next sampling. In doing so, I discovered a pool of oil settling under the other end of the sandwich. Hmmmm...not altogether a turn off, but it didn't exactly make for an appetizing appearance. Still, I forged on and took another bite. It wasn't good. The meat was bland and apart from the white remnants of what I could only assume was tatziki sauce, the flavor just wasn't there. I may have been overly picky. It may not have hit my yummy bone, but whatever it was wasn't working. Why three stars? The staff was excellent and addressed the situation in the only acceptable way by offering to bring me something else. Yup. That's the way to run a business and read your customers!! When I declined and made due with a cup of remarkably weak coffee, she took away the meal and did not charge me for the gyro. The place is unexpectedly gorgeous and the staff are wonderful and friendly. Maybe I caught the kitchen on a bad day? It was a weird in-between time to dine. I don't know, but I do like Ma-n-pa shops so it's likely that I'll return to try something else. Totally worth another go! read more

Mamma's Kitchen is a nice family oriented restaurant. They have a varied menu based on Italian/ Greek cuisine. The decor is clean and staff is friendly. I ordered their steak and cheese on this visit and it was pretty good. I wasn't a fan of the lettuce, but that's just because I hate iceberg lettuce and I especially hate shredded iceberg lettuce, but that's just me! It was tasty though and the bread was soft, but they toasted it as well, which I like. The sandwiches come with fries, but you can substitute for coleslaw at no charge. for $2.95 you can substitute for onion rings, small salad or something else, but I can't remember now. I think that's kind of a high price for a substitute at a casual restaurant. They have a lovely garden to the side with beautiful flowers, so in the Spring or cooler Summer days, that's certainly something worth checking out. Breakdown: The food: It's pretty good. The value: it's a little pricey. The experience: Everyone is friendly and water is kept full 3 stars?: It's just ok. It's not my favorite. I ate here before and it was above average (I think I even posted some pics of my first time?) and I was here again yesterday... The first meal of my busy day, I hadn't even drank water before I got there. I ordered the gyro meat appetizer, and a spaghetti and meatball entrée. (It comes with a salad, I got Caesar) and a glass of chardonnay. The food was fine although the salad didn't take as good as last time... Anyway, I had about half of everything and took the rest of it to go (except the salad). So, I'm driving home and I hear my stomach ramble... I made it home in the nick of time. Let's just say I've been sick all night. The only other time I got food poisoning this bad was ironically from that Ruby Tuesdays across the street from Mamma's. I've had a night of just running to the loo. I called in sick today and I'm about to go to the doctor. I'm not sure what the culprit was, I'm guessing either the salad or the gyro meat but who knows.... Anyway, just sharing my experience and disappointment. We had a delightful lunch on their vine-covered patio. The Greek salad is really fresh and is a perfect starter that comes with the meal. You can choose other salads but this one was great! The tiramisu was one of the best I've had since I don't care for the "boozy" ones. Rich, creamy, delicious but recommend sharing the generous piece! The baked ravioli and chicken Parmesan were ok, nothing outstanding though. Tried it on a whim for Father's Day. It works well, since we enjoy taking in some nature at Huntley Meadows next door. We all were very pleased. The starter salads (Greek and Caesar) were just right, not too much, but excellent flavors, with real parmesan, and tasty olives and feta on the Greek. For entries we were all pleased. My daughter liked her eggplant, my wife had terrific calamari, with excellent dipping sauces. Me, I had a gyro sandwich that was to die for. Everyone there also seemed to be enjoying their food. We have been going here now for about four months. Just ran across place because the outside didn't look like much. We started with breakfast and I can tell you the omelets are awesome! We've had dinner there a couple times and every time the food was good and the service was fantastic. Not you're high end Italian restaurant by any means but a very nice place for dinner and breakfast. I haven't had the pizza yet but it did look good from what I saw so I'm going to have to try that at some point. Overall we have found the food to be good, not fantastic, good portions and the prices are reasonable! The service has always been great. We had friends in for a vacation in Myrtle Beach. After driving home all day we planned on going out for our wedding anniversary dinner to a low key place. Mamma's Kitchen was the place we went to. As always, the staff was very friendly and attentive. The wine was just fine and the bread came out along with the Greek Salads. Perfect. The place was packed with happy people. The staff really makes this place. Until the food comes out.... Then it rivals the staff. The food is always great. It says a lot when you choose to go to Mamma's Kitchen for your 28th anniversary gathering instead of places in old town. Although there are some really good restaurants in old town The lasagna was really good. The Chicken Limona was outstanding. One of the best places I've been to for breakfast in along time. Not too crowded, plenty of tables which had both open area and highbacks. Very attentive staff and really cool decor. As for the breakfast, this place was on point. Prices are 8-13 per plate but well worth it. The wife got a make your own omlette with gyro meat, feta, green peppers and it was cooked perfectly and i got the Bacon sensation frittata which was huge. A little heads up on the frittata, split it, way too big to concur alone. Everything about the ambience and the food was relaxing and something we will do again. read more

It's been a while since we've visited our favorite place to eat. We went with the large meat lovers pizza and our usual fried feta cheese! Delicious!!! A large pizza is more than enough for two, in fact it would easily feed 4 people. Of course, we had to have a piece of the salted caramel cake as the perfect way to end the meal!
