This restaurant is a classic and our family tradition. We loved the location on De Anza and were gutted when it closed down. The new location in San Jose is a bit far but worth the drive - the food is delicious. It's our go-to outing for American Chinese cuisine. The portion sizes are great and the service is swift. The decor lends a touch of class to a strip mall restaurant. I've knocked the stars off for Frank, the server. We've seen him in service for years, and while I'm sure he means well, he comes across as rude and snippy. I've never seen him offer suggestions and extend courtesy, even a smile to his customers, which I would expect are customer service 101. I'd truly encourage the establishment to share this feedback with him. Exploring San Jose lunch by lunch, we decided to try out Mandarin Gourmet. Checked out the menu online, but decided to head down and check it out. My coworker and I both placed our lunch order to go. The food came out within 10-15 minutes and piping hot. We brought our lunches back to the office and realized how much food we had. The food was delicious! I ordered the Kung Pao Chicken lunch deal which comes with a chicken salad and rice. I'm bummed that we didn't get to try the soup, but I need to make time to actually go to lunch sometimes. Strong 3.5 stars. My boyfriend and I were in the mood for Chinese food, but our go-to spot was closed for Labor Day. We perused through Doordash and saw that Mandarin Gourmet was available for delivery. We haven't been to Mandarin Gourmet for years, but I remembered it being decent. That was good enough for me in the moment. Plus I didn't feel like going out of my way to try out a new restaurant. Must've been a slow day, because Mandarin Gourmet immediately pinged me on accepting my order and then I swear 5 min. later a dasher had picked it up. We ordered Mandarin Fried Rice, Crispy Eggplant in Hot Garlic Sauce, and Tangerine Chicken. Everything came out to ~$60+ with tip, but for what it was all worth there was plenty of food. We will be having leftovers for the next 2 days. The takeout boxes particularly for the Mandarin Fried Rice and Tangerine Chicken were like XL sized. I appreciated the packaging and the quality of food when it arrived. The food was hot, which was a good sign that it was freshly made. The Mandarin Fried Rice was bland, but what's cool was that it came with beef, chicken, AND shrimp. For the same price the regular fried rice was the same price, but you could choose 1 type of meat (beef, chicken, or pork). I thought this was unusual. Wouldn't it make sense that the regular fried rice would be cheaper? Well, whatever... we got the better deal. Get out of your mind whatever expectation you have of orange chicken, because Mandarin Gourmet's style of orange chicken is different. The chicken slices were thin slices rather than chunks, and they were very lightly breaded. Again, my first impression was that the flavor was lacking. When we dug for the chicken at the bottom of the box, the tangerine flavor was a bit more prominent. I never had Mandarin Gourmet's Crispy Eggplant with Garlic Sauce, but this happened to be my favorite dish of the 3. The eggplant pieces were huge and extra crispy. I liked that the hot garlic sauce was in a separate container. Very sad. I stopped by to set up a catering order for a women's homeless shelter we serve, and the manager sent me away. The order was for 60 people. He sent me away b/c he was on break. No offer to take my information and call me later. No offer to write down what I wanted and process when he was done with his break. Crab Cheese Puffs - I enjoyed these appetizers. Maybe cause I love cheese lol. I advise to eat these last since it can get your stomach full fast! Mandarin gourmet is a great Chinese restaurant reminiscent of my childhood. The waiters are old-school Chinese and the food is delicious and comforting. They have some legit Chinese home cooking as well as the standard fare. The ambience is a little dated but it reminds me of home and so I enjoy coming here. Parking is never a problem snd we've never had to wait very long to eat. I like their lettuce wraps and their soups and noodles. I've never really had anything that wasn't delicious. read more

I have been enjoying Mandarin Gourmet for over 20 years now and must say, I am a bit surprised by the low rating. I moved out of San Jose in the late 90s and have only visited it from time to time since but every time I do, the food is incredible. I have noted that the service isn't quite the best and I suspect maybe that is driving the rating down. Of the food I have enjoyed here since the early-90s, my favorites are the sweet and sour pork and without a doubt the Chinese Chicken Salad. That dressing is freaking amazing! Granted, I understand this is not an authentic dish since iceberg lettuce is not common in China, but dude, I don't care. This dish is completely insane good and it's what brings be back every time I'm in the neighborhood. In fact, on my last visit, I met my father for dinner elsewhere and then drove to Mandarin Gourmet after to get the Chinese Chicken Salad to go! I am giving Mandarin Gourmet one star, here is the main reason why... Nickel and dimming, then a pinch of poorer customer service than normal. They just start to charge for Hot Sauce! Yes that is right people, when restaurant starts charging for Hot Sauce/condiments on it's game over. I personally will no longer eat there, and this was one of my favorite places to eat! I tried to explain to the gentlemen that was there, that adjusting price on the menu or making portions adjustments is good way to pass the additional costs to customers, but when you starting charging for condiments and not asking if we would like simple basics like tea, that doesn't look good! We had heard that Mandarin Gourmet was the best in the valley. Well, it's definitely not the worst but I wouldn't say it's the best either. It seemed very over-priced for what you receive. I had the lamb with green onions; the menu does not state that the meat is fried. I was trying to avoid anything "crispy" because I don't want to eat fried food, so I was surprised when it came that way. It tasted okay, nothing special (would've been better not fried, in my opinion!). My husband had the moo shoo pork and enjoyed it but it wasn't amazing. Our server (an older man) was brusque, almost bordering on rude. I was hesitant to ask any questions. When I politely requested "no msg" (which clearly you will get if you don't mention it!!), he was clearly annoyed by my request. It would be good to state that MSG is used; it causes heart palpitations and other symptoms in many people, including me. At first I was impressed by the interior of the restaurant when we walked in, but after a few minutes it just seemed a bit worn and stagnant in the dining room. I probably would not go back. I have enjoyed this restaurant over the years but after this last visit I will hesitate to return. We were six diners and we ordered six dishes as well as an appetizer. My main complaint is that the sauce was very heavily vinegared and this same sauce was on on five of the dishes. Everything tasted the same and they should not have. Also, the kung-pao chicken was utterly devoid of peanuts. We were all disappointed in that. The hostess was welcoming and our waiter was friendly and efficient. The tablecloths and cloth napkins led an air of elegance. The bathroom was clean and tidy. The parking lot is huge, but very poorly lit and evidently this situation invites thieves and vandals. Ordering was easy, our order was correct and on time. The food however, was a bit of a let down. The egg rolls tasted like the oil they were fried in and the sweet and sour pork had little flavor. My favorite items are the beef and bell peppers, beef and broccoli, sweet and sour chicken, and their fried rice, but you really can't go wrong with it. Came here for a family and friends dinner, and it was an okay experience overall. Upon going to the restaurant, it is obvious that the exterior and the interior of the place is in need of an update. But that's fine, I suppose, as long as the food and service is good. The food overall was alright, nothing spectacular. I don't remember the exact things we ordered, since my father-in-law did the ordering, but I do remember some critiques I had about some specific dishes. For the honey walnut shrimp dish, both my brother-in-law and I believed the "walnuts" were actually candied pecans. The shrimps themselves were plump and delish! They were prepared in a different style than I am used to. Basically, the shrimps were battered. The green bean dish was typical as in most Asian places. Lots of oil for stir fry and minced garlic pieces added. The only thing that got me was the salt. It was pretty salty. The beef dish was good and very flavorful, but again salty. The dessert provided was okay. Just canned lychee on ice (gotta present that food all nice, right?) and fortune cookies. Although we didn't see the can, you can taste the syrup in the lychee. For context, I've had fresh lychee before. The fortune cookies, on the other hand, were delicious. They were warm (perhaps made in-house?) and had some good fortunes to share! The parking lot is spacious, and you should not have trouble finding parking (unless you want that spot closest to the entrance). Would I dine again? Mandarin Gourmet has been a Cupertino staple for years. Many of the techies come here from Apple and more. I had not been here for years and decided to make a return visit. The service was top notch and the food was great, not too greasy and just the right flavor. My family and I had the Mongolian beef, sesame chicken, veggie fried rice, veggie chow mane, and general Tsao chicken. I had all of them. The fried rice and chow mane could have used a little more soy sauce. But that was okay because I stay dipped in sauce. All the other dishes were on point, no complaints from any of us. Just as I expected this restaurant delivered like it did from years past. My fortune cookie read... "You will be reunited with friends from the past within a month."
