In short, service was a 2/10. Waiters and staff need to be more attentive, more present, smile more and be of srvice for clientele. We felt we were a burden to them. Not going back. Every dish we tried was delicious but our absolute fave had to be the honey walnut shrimp, which featured jumbo-size shrimp pieces! Ordered to-go last night and over $120 of bad old food. Ordered the sweet/sour pork, walnut prawns, chow mien, fried rice and chicken curry and non of them were fresh. I called and called to the owner and instead of apologizing for taking any level of accountability he says that he's been in business for 40 years and it's our fault that we may have eaten at late. Being new in the Area I decided to pick up from Mandarin Gourmet. Please please, do not waste your $$$ in this restaurant! When I got home the plates had little of the main course & lots, lots of fried rice which is soaked in soy sauce with a few pieces of egg, no taste, some uncooked. We ordered a shrimp plate, I do not know what we ended up getting b/c there was pieces of some sort of meat among the few shrimps we got. The chow fun we ordered looked good on top of the container but the bottom looked like someone else's left over. Located right across the street from Westfield Mall this restaurant has plenty of parking. The building looks very very old from the outside and honestly looks like a office building when walking up to the front door. Walking in I was pleasantly surprised, it looked newly renovated. Some of the walls had been turned into paintings, and they had artwork in different locations of the interior as well. The server was very attentive to us and I thought did a great job 5 stars. We ordered steamed rice bowls for each of us and 3 different entrees #1 lemon chicken: I could taste the lemon but it was hard and honestly not good 2 stars max. #2. Honey walnut prawns: 2 stars max. The prawns tasted kind of old with a "fishy flavor" (had way better from a fast food place) #3. Mandarin orange beef: this was my first time having this. I thought it was actually pretty good and paired perfectly with the steamed rice. 3.5 stars. My aunt chose this for a celebratory dinner with the family. Walking in I was immediately transported back in time. The decor is elegant, clean but is dated- almost by a couple of decades. I frankly like restaurants which have stood the test of time but the food here is heavily westernized. We got egg flower soup, egg fried rice, chow mein, kungpao chicken, lemon chicken, honey walnut shrimp, crispy beans and crispy eggplant with garlic sauce. Crispy beans- Undoubtedly the best dish we had that day. Beans were crisp and uber flavorful. Our hands couldnt stop reaching out for them. Highly recommend it! Crispy eggplant in garlic sauce- I love eggplant, especially in Asian restaurants because it tends to be beautifully cooked. But, the coating around the eggplant was way too thick for comfort and it was struggle just to cut through it. The sauce was very sweet as well. Egg flower soup- Came with some tomatoes and snow peas. Though I had better before, this was not bad as well. Kungpao chicken- very sweet again. I was expecting other flavors to shine through but it was just overwhelmingly sweet. Honey Walnut shrimp- Again, a sweet dish but this one was expected to be sweet. The food comes quickly and the seating is comfortable (choice of booths or tables). The first course are some fried dough with a sweet red dipping sauce. Chinese chicken salad with a peanut dressing is usually served at the same time, followed by a hot and sour soup. Finally the entrée is served with a choice of steamed or fried rice. Crazy expensive for what it is. I decided to forgo chain Chinese food and remembered liking Mandarin Gourmet when I ate there several years ago. Without looking at a menu I called and placed an order for chicken chow mein and Mongolian beef. I was floored when my two item order totaled, $44.30. Sadly, it was super average chow mein. The Mongolian beef had solid meat quality I'll say that. But, it was lacking any sauce and for some reason had about 25 large dried red chilies in it. I prefer to frequent family run establishments but for that same $44.30 I could've fed my entire family from that place that has the endangered bear in their logo. The place is located at the same complex as Bevmo and Party City. Huge restaurant with seat options inside. For private party, you can reserve your own dining room. What we had and would recommend: 1. Mooshoo Pork is definitely a crowd pleaser. This looks like Chinese burito. They use a wrapper, then they spread the sauce and put the pork filling inside, it tasted phenomenal! You must order this if you have a group of 4+ to enjoy this dish. 2. Honey Prawn with Almonds. This dish is a combination of sweet and savory. The mayonnaise coated the crispy shrimp, it really made a great combination with the almonds. 3. Chengdu Chicken. If you're a spicy lover, then you must order this dish. The chicken is well seasoned, served with broccoli, and made a great companion with white rice. 4. Mandarin Noodle. This noodle is so tasty and flavorful! Noodle is so chewy and fulfilling. This dish can feed 4-5 people. Meat options can choose between chicken, beef, pork, or seafood. 5. Sweet and sour soup. Some of the stir fry dishes, the ones not made with a sweet sugar taste (like Honey Walnut and Sweet and Sour), did not have a savory umami taste and were somewhat bland. The exception was a stir fry green bean dish. The stir fry Curry Chicken was rubbery and not much curry seasoning taste. The Mongolian Beef meat was dry. Typically we would have plenty of leftovers since we like to try a number of dishes. However portion size was such that not much for leftovers. ~$20 min/dish and ~$30/person (2 seafood, 4 chicken, 1 beef dish) with tax and tip (no drinks). Water and tea were free. One way to tell if the type and way the food is prepared closely to authentic culture is to look at the clientele. Busy time of evening and only 10-20% Asian customers (no large families), the remainder were predominantly Caucasian and Hispanic. The Specials included fried wonton strips with sweet sour sauce, yummy Chinese Chicken , Salad, Hot and Sour Soup, and Fried Rice...hearty portions at a very reasonable price. Our food was served with a smile by an extremely pleasant and attentive waiter...no grouchy wait staff seen here. The only problem I noticed was the paucity of customers.
