I'll basically say ditto to what kitty p.'s boyfirend said. With an emphasis on the afordability and I'd say it's even a step above what you typically find around this area. New Englanders have a bit of a love affair with the roast beef sandwich. There's enough places out there that supposedly specialize in this sandwich. Mangia does the roast beef sandwich a solid. Thin slices stacked thick, nice toasted bun, and whatever else you want on it. The ingredients here, like most places in the North End are fresh and snappy. And yes, the "Mangia Burger", as illustrated on their front window, is a great deal and one tasty burger. Also, check out their daily specials -- they're usually a good combo for a good price and they won't steer you wrong. Chances are, if you're coming here for lunch, the small place is already packed. But the old photos and whatnots that cover the walls are an entertaining diversion as you stand around waiting for your sandwich. If you are lucky enough to get a seat, you'll be able to enjoy eavesdropping on some classic local flavor from the neighborhood. Oh Mangia Mangia, how I love you. Let me count the ways: 1. The same people work here, day in and day out. I know because I walk past it at least a couple times of day. They recognize you and know what you want to order. 2. The steak bomb sandwich, while I have never ordered myself because it is huge and unladylike and extremely messy, is awesome. 3. The cheeseburgers and fries remind me of the stuff I used to order at the community pool when I was a kid. Just biting into them reminds me of my childhood. 4. Excellent local joint tucked away from the busier part of the North End. My boyfriend and I just had the meatball sub and chicken parm sub for lunch - fresh, hot, delicious. Forgot to take a photo because we ate the too quickly. We will be back soon. Btw - they do accept credit cards. read more

You know, I'm really not sure about these glowing reviews. Mangia Mangia is a lunch counter. It's pretty hard to screw up a chicken parm sub. That said, the staff is in fact morbidly obese and very friendly; they'll even walk orders across the street to old ladies in the housing complex. Locals apparently get to skip the long lunch line and place their orders directly with Joseph. And, there's something to be said for eating lunch under dueling photos of Mussolini and Padre Pio surrounded by "contractors" on eternal lunch breaks. read more

When we passed by we saw some locals who seemed regulars inside talking and having a good time, so we felt compelled to get in. The owner kIndly took us in even though they were about to close the restaurant so my fiancée could haVe some gnocchi. She is Italo-Brazilian and found it delicious. This is a classic case of you get what you pay for. While I have only been there once (so many other options in the North End), it was good, not great, and not bad, thus the 3 stars. The key here is the price. Its cheap...the cheapest spot around. I had a cheesesteak and fries (call the cardiologist), and it was $6 bucks. Not bad. These guys are amazing! This is a true-grit-old-school-hole-in-the-wall joint where almost everything is cooked on a well seasoned extra greasy griddle. The burgers are the BEST around, and at $4 a pop (cheese included) you can't go wrong. I bought a sack of bacon egg and cheese burgers for breakfast one morning and all of my friends were blown away. I'd like to add that all of my friends are either chef's or front house staff in some of the best restaurants in town... Soups are great too. read more

Absolute banger for drenching (drunk munching). The morning after though, not quite so much. But you know what they say, an awkward morning is better than any lonely night. I got the bacon/potato combo. Loved the bacon, hated the potato. Obviously you'd have to be a pretty self-righteous individual to screw up anything involving bacon. Having said that, I feel the efforts put into making an outstanding bacon regiment were lacking in the potato department. I don't really want to go into much more depth than that. Too painful. Great local sandwich and burger joint deep in the back streets of the North End. Some may call it a greasy spoon, I call it the best burger around for $6. Big toasted sesame roll, huge patty that fills the bun (pet peeve of mine if it doesn't), perfectly crisp thick cut bacon and all the fixings for a great price. I was in the area for a bit and I got to where I needed to be a bit early. I thought to myself "why not try something while I'm here?" I found this place and it looked like they were just opening. As I looked around the place I see a lot of vintage photos of the owner (maybe), what the store looked like in the past, etc. I guessed that this spot might be family owned. Anyway, I'm greeted by two gentlemen who were very laid back and friendly. They assisted me with my order and were not antsy about when I paid for my food. I found this to be pretty cool just because some places are rushing to get your money whereas this place was more lax about getting the money right away. I didn't get anything special. It was a sausage egg and cheese on a plain bagel (I saw signs for something called the mangia burger if I remember correctly. That might be their popular dish.) my breakfast sandwich was very good, regardless. I'd like to come back here one day and give it a full blown review where I tried more than just a breakfast sandwich. read more
