I couldn't have asked for a better birthday dinner than at Maple and Ash. My group of 8 went for apps, drinks, and dinner on a Friday evening at 5:15. It's tough to get a reservation for such a large group but we planned nearly a month in advance for this. I was told it was the best food in the city bar none - i would say that's as close to the truth as you can get. Incredible atmosphere and quality customer service. Each of us enjoyed our time and I felt incredibly celebrated. My only recommendations would be to take a look at the menu before you arrive so that you can focus on taking pictures and being in the moment while you're there. The complimentary cocktails were tasty and the candles at dinner was a nice touch. Looking forward to my next dinner here! Probably won't be for a while as our meal was well over $1,000. Both are delicious and can not be passed up on your next visit. (Side note: Skip the creamed spinach) Dropping a star for serving choice rather than prime cuts of steaks. This has always been the offering at Maple & Ash, but since my original review it's become more apparent. Don't get me wrong. ..this is still an excellent steak particularly because of the charcoal preparation, but there are better cuts available. Although I'm changing my rating from 5 to 4 stars, overall this is still my favorite steakhouse in Chicago. I went to Maple and Ash for brunch when the weather was nice in Chicago and we sat outside. The outside seating is lovely but can feel a bit cramped. The inside ambiance is very different. It's very dark and feels more like a bar. I would recommend the outdoor seating during sunny seasons. The seafood was surprisingly very fresh! We got oysters, shrimp cocktails, mango shrimp salad, sashimi and ceviche. Nothing was fishy about the flavors or taste of the seafood. Also, they serve brunch items as well. Right off the bat, when you walk into Maple & Ash you see how lively it is with customers. From the first floor to the third, every table is full and everyone dining/or drinking is having a great time. Our server Shar (Sharlina) was PHENOMENAL. She knew the menu inside and out and was able to give us some amazing suggestions including - The Seafood Tower, Beef Carpaccio, Steak Frites & Agnolotti. All of which had wonderful flavor and were prepared to perfection. Candle-lit tables, music, neat light fixtures, and a smooth running staff give this restaurant an awesome vibe. Being a New Yorker I am used to places like this with great ambiance and great food. We were then escorted out and around a tented area and that's where we were seated. It smelled like soil and it appeared like there was a party the night before and the staff hasn't arrived to clean up. Popped Ballons were all over the place. This place is super elegant and cute!! Highly recommend reserving ahead of time. FYI they allow a 15 min grace period. When you arrive, go straight to the back and take the elevator to the third floor. I accidentally thought the hostess at the street level was the maple and ash hostess. Oops. We got complimentary cocktails when we sat down. I think they were lychee flavored. The complimentary apps were some radishes, olives, and nuts. OMG it is soooo unlike me to not grab photos, but that just goes to show how eager I was to get to the meal. Due to a busy weekend, I was unable to snag reservations for Maple and Ash and instead ordered food to go through, Yelp. In arriving to pick up my order, staff was friendly and had my order ready and prepared upon my arrival. (I was super bummed I could not get a reservation, because looking at the ambiance of the restaurant I just know that dining-in is a great experience, a vibe lol.) But, I loved that the food was still hot when I got home. I ordered the Ricotta Agnolotti with Winter Truffle for myself and the 28 Day Dry-Aged Bone-In Ribeye, Mashed Potatoes, and Broccolini. Ricotta Agnolotti: They refer to it as 'Pillows of Love' on the menu, and I could not have described it any better. The pasta literally melted in your mouth, so soft, leaving you with the taste ricotta and the after taste of the truffle. The truffle was not over powering, it was just right. I enjoyed the sauce that it was in, a light butter maybe? Bomb! 22oz Ribeye: I did not eat this however, my boyfriend made note that this was a quality steak, he ordered it medium-rare and it was cooked exactly how he enjoys! It was a big serving of meat, and it looked great. Mashed Potatoes and Broccolini: The mashed potatoes were honestly the best part of my meal, I am also a sucker for a good starch lol. These potatoes were buttered to perfection and whipped like no other. It was a smooth and creamy texture with a nice buttered, lightly garlic taste. UPDATE: Emailed them after their reply to this review. Never received a response. We went last night for my friend's birthday and the experience was...underwhelming. This place was a dream place on my friend's checklist so to walk away disappointed was a bit of a bummer. They did have a fun personalized menu (they do it for all bdays) and a little apertif to start. The waiter was nice, but a little pushy. And the busboys were extremely quick -- too quick. Like we had cocktails half full that they were trying to clear from the table. Not sure if that was to get us to buy more cocktails or to rush us out. We went all out -- the meatballs (good but salty), the tartare, the Pro level seafood tower (really delicious), the pillows of love gnocchi (amazing but you literally get about 8 pieces of pasta), and STEAKS. That's where things kind of suffered. My filet mignon was overdone but they insisted it was correct so wouldn't refire it. My friend ordered wagyu that was overdone. To their credit they did get her a new one but by the time it came to the table the sides were cold. She was about to cancel the order when it finally arrived. We ordered roasted asparagus but they brought us brussel sprouts - which they charged us for even though we never wanted them. They eventually brought the asparagus but they were hard and undercooked. After the steak issues we didn't bother sending it back. For $1,000 bill we had hoped for a more cohesive experience. The very definition of overrated. Save your time and your money. If you like steak, take your pick of Gibson's, Carmine's, Morton's, or Tavern on Rush (all are right across the street). First off was the reservation. We had reservations for eight pm. My friends and I arrived fifteen minutes early to check-in. Despite this, we had to wait an extra twenty minutes after the reservation to be seated. Thus, we waited for thirty-five minutes on the sidewalk while other larger parties who arrived later got seated sooner. The worst part was how unapologetic, smug, and arrogant they were about it. They finally just sat us down as if everything was perfect. Here's free advice, apologize to your customers for making them wait, ESPECIALLY IF THE WAIT IS YOUR FAULT! The customer is always right. Remember that! The biggest problem was, however, the food. I ordered the filet mignon. I asked for it medium rare. A medium rare steak will have a medium pink to red center and will be warm to the touch. Charred black is not medium rare. I don't know if the server relayed the incorrect message to the chef, but this was basic competence of the restaurant and/or chef. Heck, even Ponderosa steakhouse could get this part right! I was so stuffed when it came out that I can barely eat more than a few bites...and my husband had the same issue. We regretted all the leftovers when we got the bill and realized that few bites of steak alone cost $180, but my husband declared it the tastiest leftover lunch the next day. The drinks here are amazing! We made reservations to sit in the patio area. It's quaint, so the tables are not terribly far apart, but there's enough room so you still feel adequately socially distanced. We were disappointed to learn as we left that there is a different menu inside, but we did enjoy the food as well. Especially the dessert. The service was also very good from an attentive staff. The patio is a perfect area to wear sunglasses if you're in the mood to chat and eat, because there isn't much shade. Honestly, I'm disgusted by the treatment I saw the women working at Maple & Ash received while I was eating there. I assumed because it was a highly rated and expensive restaurant that the treatment of the workers would match the presumed quality. However, I saw men grabbing, ogling and verbally harassing the female servers and hostesses. The food was good and our server was also very sweet, but I couldn't help but cringe when the men at the tables beside me would grab or visibly look her up and remark on "how sexy" she looked. And in case you happen to put blinders on and ignore the objectifications around you while dining, the steak add-ons are listed as "arm candy" and serve as a reminder of who this nauseating culture is catered to. Maple & Ash is known for its special menus that help celebrate life's special moments. Booked a reservation here to celebrate a birthday - of course for the happy f*@cking birthday menu. Heard many good things regarding the food here and came to find out that the menu was created by a two-star Michelin chef. Let me start by describing the experience. Reservations have to be made in advance and there is a $100 booking fee per person which is applied towards the bill. There is a dress code in order to dine in. There is valet parking available but I was able to find street parking relatively easy on a Friday night. Restaurant is a beautiful multi-story building. First floor has a bar and casual dining seating, a coat check, and has a photo booth. Dining is on the second. Bathrooms on the third. Upscale atmosphere with dimmed lighting. Staff is very polite, attentive, and extremely knowledgable. You feel like the VIP from the minute you walk in until you leave. You receive a couple of complimentary items. First you get started off with a drink that had 3 types of liquor and tasted like lemon. It was tangy and sweet very delicious. Next they provided us with house made waffle potato chips and a caviar onion dip which was unbelievable. They even ended up bringing out a second portion. Once we received our main course they brought over 4 garlic-buttered sweet rolls which were warmed up. For the main course we got the colorado lamb chops and the classic steak frites. Ordered the maple & ash beefed up butter and the yukon gold potatoes al gratin on the side. The presentation was perfect. The waiter mixed up the ingredients of the butter in front of us. Each component was described and added in separately - lots of show and sizzle. The potatoes were separated into fours and one portion placed on our plates. The waiter also poured the sauce for the lamb over top of the meat. **Colorado lamb chops - OHHH MY! These are the most tender lamb chops I have ever had in my life. Course #1 Vodka shot and oysters (we don't like them so we got tuna tartare on a wonton crisp instead) - this was a fun and unexpected way to start the meal, the shot with the complimentary drink in the beginning definitely elevate the mood and get a small pre-dinner buzz going. The clams however were the size of a penny but still good just almost no meat. The sauce was so good and the pasta that was served after went really well with it. Course #3 - French onion soup and wedge salad - At this point we were already full. The french onion soup and wedge salad were both incredible. The french onion soup was very good and had lots and lots of cheese. The wedge salad was delicious and had these amazing bites of bourbon bacon Course #4 - Steak with bone marrow, halibut, butter sauce, buttered mashed potatoes, brussel sprouts, truffle pasta - At this point we are ready to explode we are so full we tried a little of everything and boxed the rest up. Here is were I am going to be critical everything up to this point was incredible but the main course was disappointing regardless of the quantity of food delivered I expected something better. The steak was the most disappointing part of the dinner. There was no meat. It was a big piece of bone, fat, and tendon with tiny bites of meat. It was incredibly hard to eat and honestly frustrating. You completely disregard the flavor because you are fighting to get any meat off the bone. Halibut was bland. Last night was my first time eating at Maple & Ash and it has already become my favorite restaurant in Chicago! I called same day to make reservations with no issue. Upon arrival we were shown to the lounge area which is very nice and creates a great social atmosphere. I was very impressed with the cocktail menu selection. I tried the "Risk it all" and an old fashioned and both were made perfectly. When we first sat at our table the server greeted everyone with a welcome cocktail which was a huge surprise as most restaurants don't do that. For appetizers we had the grilled octopus which was delicious! The bread that came along with the octopus made for a nice pairing - I would highly recommend this dish. For my entree I settled on the Icelandic Cod. The Cod has a light crisp to it and was covered with a lump crab sauce - also recommend this dish. I typically do not go for dessert but the waiter did such a good job of talking through the options that I couldn't resist! I settled on the Mille Crepe and was not disappointed. It came out as advertised and tasted great! Overall the best features of this restaurant were the atmosphere and service. I went here with a few people from work. We were celebrating my work anniversary/milestone. I will say that I had one of the best meals of my life at this restaurant. I consider myself to be a foodie and this place didn't disappoint. The ambiance is very dark and club/lounge like. We started with some drink at the lounge while we waited for our table. I ordered the Zombie Blondie. It was delicious and unique with the flavor combinations. Someone else ordered the Pornstar Martini. I had a sip and it was bright and delicious. Once we were seated, we were given homemade potato chips w/French dip and caviar. It was very delicious. We decided to each get the IDGAF. They gave us a free Vespa cocktail and there was someone in my group who doesn't drink and he got a mocktail. I'm not typically a fan of gin, but it was a refreshing and delicious cocktail. They started us with an oyster topped with caviar and a shot of vodka. The person that doesn't drink was given a shot of Bloody Mary mix. This was unexpectedly delicious. The caviar was smoky and added a great flavor to the oyster and the vodka was very smooth. Next came the Seafood Tower with clams, shrimp, crab in the most delicious garlic butter sauce. This was my favorite dish of the night. Once we finished the seafood, our server came with fresh pasta to mix the leftover garlic butter sauce. There was still a lot of leftover sauce, so we asked for bread use with the sauce. Next came a wedge salad with the best bacon I've ever had, tuna tartar with nori wontons, and a Spanish style octopus. The tuna had a great slightly sweet flavor due to the mango. The octopus was so delicious and a little spicy, but full of flavor. The main entrée arrived. Since there were 4 of us total, they sent over the Tomahawk along with tons of sides. There was sauteed spinach, potatoes au gratin, asparagus, agnolotti, bone marrow stuffing, and turbot. My next favorite item was the bone marrow stuffing. It just paired so well with the steak. Our server also made us a tableside bearnaise that was on the steak. Everything was superb. The meal ended with the sundae bar. We each had 3 scoops of ice cream (strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla) along with tons of toppings to put on your own sundae. Hello my name is Shawn I'm the founder of a Anti violence not for profit organization by the name of house of hope foundation where I mentor young at-risk youth . but today was probably one of the worst days of my life ,,my day started off perfect I received a call from a few friends that said they wanted to go out for dinner and a few drinks so we decided to try out the recommended Mable and ash restaurant down town Chicago Gold Coast area , our reservations was booked for 5pm but we made it a bit early so we decided to just sit down stairs and have a few cocktails and appetizers until our table upstairs was ready now right at 5clk we decided to go upstairs all 8 guest as soon as we was walking off the elevator I was approached very aggressively by 3 or 4 security guards and a few managers I was told to step to the side in front of everyone watching the manager and security then begin to say that I was carrying a loaded gun and the gun had fell from my waste and a witness said a child pick the gun up ,, I was so confused I stated to the security and managers that I do not own a fire arm and they have the wrong person the female Manager by the name of Meghan Mcneil was very aggressive and rude I repeatedly told her they have the wrong person and I do not own a gun but she continue to embarrass me and humiliated me in front of strangers and friends and staff she then stated I will have to leave the premises due to their rules I then had to raise up my shirt pull up my jacket and plead with them that they was accusing the wrong man,,, I then asked them very respectfully why am I being accused? Where is the witness? they all refuse to answer me. I asked them did they review the cameras they stated they didn't have time that they had to move quickly so I stated out of this full restaurant you just approached a tall black man and accused him of having a gun in the presence of friends and kids after debating back-and-forth with Security and management my friends and family decided to join in and ask them why was I being harassed? they didn't stated to him. It was a big misunderstanding that they was told that I was carrying a gun on me and the gun fell on the floor my friends and family then ask Security why was I randomly picked out of the full restaurant? and once again no answer,, for the record I am a violence interrupter, a peacekeeper through out of Chicago, Illinois. I save kids lives. I was humiliated disrespected and embarrassed at this establishment I was given no sincere apology just told that it was a mistake for the record.
